1. I CAN do this. I HAVE done it before so I know I CAN and that knowledge is motivating.
2. I DECIDE I am the kind of person who makes a promise to HERSELF and HONORS that promise. I DEMONSTRATE I am indeed such a person; it's not just wishful thinking.
3. This is MY thing, a promise to MYSELF, not something I SHOULD do to please someone else.
4. Serenity Prayer: As I age, there are more and more things in the bucket "Things I cannot change". Eating "on plan" is still within my power. It is one of the dwindling number of things I actually have the power to change, and so I will grab hold. And thus feel empowered and less out of control of the ravages of aging.
5. View of myself as a healthy, fit, determined, strong, admirable, "together" person.
6. (secondarily) Other's view of me as healthy, fit, determined, strong, "together".
7. I will live a long vibrant life: I visualize a serene, wise 88 year old woman
8. It's fascinating to be in a science experiment as both the scientist and the white rat, watching what odd things this rat decides to do. "How interesting" me the scientist notices, that at 7AM, the rat vowed to stay on plan, yet at 4pm, she almost caved. But didn't. Woo hoo.
9. Lifelong learning: This is my term project for the course of a lifetime. I WILL learn to do this. I WILL learn about my own mind. I WILL learn strategies to counteract that feisty lizard brain within.
10.Progressing on this PROJECT builds strength of character that will help me in all areas of life, especially as I age.
11.Spillover of skills and success to other "projects" in life, helping with progress toward other goals and values: such as greater creativity, greater productivity, greater industriousness, dealing gracefully with aging, overcoming aversion to the (many) drudgeries of life (exercising, housecleaning) when the lizard brain whines "I DON'T WANNA!!!"
12. Feels good, empowering, to succeed at this "game", to see progress, to realize I CAN DO THIS.
13. It gets easier the more I stick to it. Every time I so no to a "slip", it's easier to say no the next day.
14. The fit of clothes, at the beach, doing yoga.

The best to everyone else on the team on your progress!!!
Anita

oops! Should have added:

The reasons I want to lose weight:

SO tired of being on the diet rollercoaster - flitting from one diet after another and remaining fat.

I want to regain my health.

I want to look better.

I'm tired of plus sized clothing.

I want to turn another "diet" into a lifestyle.

Hi! I just signed up with Spark People, and I'd like to join the Beck Group. I've found the perfect eating plan for me from the book fat2fit, but now I need to find the emotional backbone to stick with it!

Hello, I am starting up with the Beck Diet Solution again. I am at a healthy weight but I have a love-hate relationship with some foods and I want to to be an "ex" with some of them.

So, I am focusing on healthy eating, rather than losing weight and here are my reasons:
1. Reduce the risk of chronic diseases
2. Less aches and pains
3. Mobility
4. Energy
5. Eliminate and/or control cravings for junk food
6. Get rid of excess body fat and keep it off (hips and thighs)
7. Positive attitude

Hello. Hope everyone is having a wonderful experience with their diets. Here are the reasons I want to lose weight:
1. I'll feel confident enough to wear a bikini and proud of how I look.
2. I'll no longer have anxiety about family functions, trips, or special occasions because of my appearance.
3. I'll want to post pictures of myself online because I love the way I look when I'm thin and fit.
4. I'll be able to run faster and further, eventually accomplishing my goal of running a 10K in 2013.
5. I'll be able to wear the clothes in my closet that are too tight and it will be fun and exciting to shop for cute, fashionable clothing again.
6. I'll look better and more attractive.
7. My husband will be proud of me.
8. Improving my appearance will help me feel better about myself.
9. My thighs won't rub together anymore.
10. I'll have a flat stomach.

Hi,

My BDS Workbook came in the mail today, and I've decided to begin immediately. It says "6 weeks to train your brain to think like a thin person". Well, I've been trying for 68 years (!) with no long-term results so far!! Hopefully, this will set me on the road.

The main advantage for me will be to feel in control! Everything else derives from that. Here are the TOP TEN!
1. To feel in control.
2. To be able to overcome the constant urge to binge.
3. To feel better emotionally, without sinking into depression.
4. To "like" my body more.
5. To feel comfortable joining groups which go out on walking trips.
6. To be more assertive.
6. To have more energy and stamina.
7. To have more energy to go out and sell my music programmes.
8. To be better able to cope with daily chores.
9. To be better able to cope with frustration and disappointment.
10. To look better in everyday clothes and in a bathing suit.

All the best to everyone on this team!
Batya

So I don't have to be worried that my shoes, underwear, heart rate monitor, hat, bra, wedding ring, coat, sweatshirt, or airplane seatbelt won't fit.

So I don't have to untag Facebook pictures of myself, avoid going to the doctor, lie on my driver's license, feel shock in seeing myself in photos, shop in the plus size department, or cringe thinking about my high school reunion.

So J will be proud of me, want to be with me, and feel attracted to me.

So my health isn't compromised by a bad back, 51% body fat, triglycerides of 254, and blood pressure that makes the nurse frown. So I don’t have to worry that something is going physically wrong with me, like a blood clot, heart attack, or stroke.

So I don't have to miss out on cross country skiing with my daughter, rock climbing with my kids, or being able to complete the hiking trail. So I can run a 5k, join J’s volleyball team, and bike a century. Heck, so I won’t have difficulty doing daily tasks like getting up off the floor and tying my shoes, etc.

So I can fit into cute outdoorsy clothes at REI. So I won’t have to struggle to get clothes on, have clothes that ride up or are too tight, have to wonder whether I’ve outgrown something since the last time I wore it, or have to buy more clothes because I’ve gotten too big.

So I set a good example for my kids, and be alive to be a grandma to their children. And not just any grandma, but one who’s active, lively, and able to enjoy old age.

So I can be a fit, up for anything, strong, energetic, active person, with a positive outlook and optimism again.

So I can look in the mirror and feel good about myself, knowing that I accomplished something important. So I don’t feel so dumpy, but I can actually feel attractive again.

So I don’t always look around to see if I’m the fattest one in the room. So I can make a better first impression on people, and not have to feel self-conscious about whether they think I’m weak, out of control, or killing myself with my extra pounds.

So I can feel more in control, no hiding food, eating out of control, or feeling ashamed of how much I eat. So I am not constantly on the hunt for food at every convenience store, vending machine, meeting, and social event. So that I don’t schedule extra trips to coffee shops to do work when what I really want to do is eat. So that food doesn’t rule my life.

So I can live longer.

Lost 65 pounds just in time for my 40th birthday. Now maintaining my weight loss, training for a half marathon and lifting weights seriously. Love my body and love my life. It was all worth it!

GRETCHENDZ, I have all my response cards old school on index cards, but I put them in my handbag in the same pocket as my blackberry. So everytime I reach for my bb on the bus on my way to work, the cards are there, so I read them before I get to my emails.

That's an EXCELLENT idea Charlene--thank you!

By the way, I used Evernote (free android app) to set my list on the front page of my smartphone--that way I see it many times a day!

Hi GRETCHENDZ,
I didn't load it to my droid phone, but I did set a daily copy of it to be sent to me in an email every day. When I check my emails, it reminds me to read it. Then, I delete it and get a new one the next day. This works really well for me...it triggers me to read it daily.

Warmly,
Charlene

Hello (new kid here).

I'm sorry of this has been answered elsewhere. I did a search and found nothing.

Has anyone put their Advantages on a smartphone app? (preferably Android) I've been looking through the android marketplace. I use the Sparkpeople app. Was looking for something tailored to the Beck cards.

I figure I can just use a note app like Evernote, but was wondering if anyone used something else.

Thanks!

Going back to Bed:

Totally healthy, but also some shallow, honest, real reasons I want to lose weight.

1. I will look better!
2. I will able to 'play the part' of the sexy housewife in my new neighborhood
3. I will be able to wear trendy clothes
4. Johny will think I'm hot again.
5. I won't be tired all the time!
6. I will be more comfortable
7. I will set a good example for my kids
8. My sex life will be a LOT better.

Don't have my advantages in front of me, but here are the ones I can think of:
I feel better and more confident.
Feeling in control of my life.
Feeling good in my clothes.
Having more clothes to wear.

Hey! glad to see some action here because I'm revisiting my Beck steps again. I spent some time today on the advantages. I redo them a couple times a year. Its nice when old advantages are reached. Like Judy a lot of mine are about getting BACK to a state of mind I have been in. I don't feel I've completely lost it but here's my current ADVANTAGES:

By recommitting to a more consistent focus my health and fitness I will gain...

Faith in myself again

Feeling strong and confident in my body again

The ability to more easily resist mindless eating, overeating, nervous eating

Fitting into all my new clothes

Getting below 200 again, then down to 190, then down to “new” numbers

Feeling in control of my new life.

I have a LONG list of advantages that I made up some time ago and I have several copies that I can read at different times of the day. I really should be reading right before each meal. Anyway, I'm only going to post ten of them.
1. More energy
2. Self-control
3. Clearer thinking
4. Less chance of sickness
5. Clothes look better
6. Sense of accomplishment
7. Self-confidence
8. Inspire others
9. More active lifestyle
10. Get back to wedding weight (37 years ago)

I am working on my reasons. They are not all the same as they were when I did this three and a half years ago, but some are the same. I am staying on this "Day" for a few days, and I am brainstorming reasons a couple of times a day. Then I will capture the list and make cards and a composite list and copies.

Without my other lists in front of me, here are some reasons:
- I have been feeling stuffed and sick from the way I have been eating
- I want my clothes to fit
- ***This is s big one: I want to get back to the feeling that this is easier. I have gone from that easy, steady way of doing this all the way back to where I am struggling (and losing the battle) day after day. I remember that it can become easier, and I want that.
- I want to look better in pictuers
- health, long life, lower BP, cholesterol, glucose
- Easier on my joints
- ***Here is another big one: I want BE someone who has a grip on this. It is an identity thing. I want to be a role model. I want to be able to help others.
- Related to that one, I believe that getting a grip on my eating, conquering this aspect of life, is related to conquering other aspects that have not been working well. I want to become the person who knows what I need to do and who does it.

Well, that is the list for today. As I continue looking at this Day 1 list, I am just starting to think about Day 2, what diet to follow.

Sparkfully Yours, Judi

Working on day 1 advantages of losing weight. One big one I am noticing today,I want to weigh the same year after year and fit in the same size.It has gotten cooler and the fall clothes I have tried on don't fit from last year.I always envied those that can pull out the season's clothes and fit right in them and that can buy ahead knowing what size they always wear.At least maintain within a five pound range.I am always losing or gaining never stable.

All the reasons (so far) I can think of. Not just ten!

I will practice what I preach.
I will feel empowered in my decisions.
I will feel proud of the wife and mother I may become.
I will be able to healthfully be pregnant and recover.
I will feel more in control.
I will not need to feel sneaky about my habits.
I will be respecting the work and needs of others (animals, people with less resources, people that brought this food to me, God, etc.)
I will feel better naked/scantily clad.
I will be able to consume food without feeling consumed by food.
I will feel more confident in social situations.
I will look great in the clothes I choose to wear.
I will not feel depressed at looking at photos that should actually make me feel happy.
I will be able to partake in any activities I wish without weight or lack of confidence holding me back.
I will be healthier/feel better.
I will feel like a worthy individual to the husband and children I may possibly have in future.
I will feel like I have amazing self control and strength.
I will not compare myself with others in a negative way.
I will make healthy choices second nature.
I will be an inspiration to others.
I will be the size my body naturally craves.
I will feel like I have the strength to accomplish anything after accomplishing something so amazing!
I will feel superior with my healthy habits.
I will finally be able to experience the life thin people are able to experience.
I will not feel the need to make excuses about my weight or my habits.
I will feel free, like I did as a child.
I will be more assertive.
I will be less jealous.
I will feel less judged.
I will grow old gracefully.
I will feel less irritable.
I will be honoring God’s temple that I am blessed with.
I will make a better first impression.
I will be able to have a guy lift me up.
I will stay healthy long enough so that I can stay independent as I grow old.
I will stop an unhealthy chain of thinking and lifestyle in my family line.
I will know that if someone isn’t “into” me that it isn’t about my weight, that we just don’t’ have chemistry.
I will not feel regret.
I will make pre-weight loss acquaintances take a second look.
I will not need to deflect compliments.
I will be “the hot one” and not “the fat girl.”
I will be flirted with and attractive to others.
I will not fear travelling to hot climates.
I will feel able to undress in front of others.
I will be able to concentrate on something other than weight loss.
I will not be ashamed by remarks about my eating habits.
I will have a family that is proud that I am a part of them.
I will not need to get into a good angle for photos.
I will look fabulous in a wedding dress if I get married.
I will feel like I haven’t wasted, and have instead enjoyed, my youthful years.

Hi everyone

This is my second time at Beck too, I did it a couple of years ago. So I've gone over my old list of wanting to lose weight and have added a few more. I have kept the weight I've lost so far off, so it is interesting to see that some things on my list I have already achieved (I used to ache from carrying so much weight around and I don't now).

I'm looking forward to the program again and achieving some good weight loss! I've lost around half of what I needed to lose when I first did Beck, it would be wonderful to shift the second half.

I look forward to chatting with you all.

Hi Beckers... I am s-l-o-w-l-y working my way through the book and this week "got around to" putting down my reasons for losing weight as per the day one exercise! I have them posted on my bathroom mirror, I have one to stick in the car, and will be setting up Outlook reminders on my work and home PCs, and of course, one to carry with me in my purse.

Here they are:
1. I'll be setting a good example for the kids.
2. I'll feel more in control.
3. I'll feel better physically.
4. I'll get more joy out of shopping for clothes.
5. I'll look better.
6. I'll be happier when I look in the mirror.
7. I'll live longer.
8. I'll be in better health.

Dawn-- Welcome to the Beck group! Don't worry about the fact that some of us are trying again. The Beck steps are mostly things we need to keep practicing for life. (There are some that are meant to be one-time things.) As with any lifestyle change, sometimes we slip and need to regroup-- that's an important skill to learn since no one is perfect. However, starting the steps again also doesn't always mean that people have slipped. I lost 60 pounds several years ago using Beck and Best Life, and have kept off 55. Every once in a while i go through the steps again, or go back to a few steps I do struggle with, to refresh and regroup. Some of the steps have become second nature for me. Others not so much. The advantages I redo every 4-6 months simply because they change. Or some of them do. Sometimes because I reach a certain goal (like "fitting into all those size 16Ws hanging in my closet" That was one of my first list of goals. I've since had to give all of my 16Ws away because they got too loose.), sometimes because my priorities change.

Reducing anxiety has been an important part of my focus on health as well. I'm not sure it was even on my first list... I'd have to go back and check... I do remember that it was during my initial weight loss that I came to terms with how much I struggled with anxiety.

Heidi

Dawn here! This is my first time using the Beck program and I am a bit worried after reading at how this is the second and third time for so many people. I am thinking that maybe this is a hard thing to stick to. But, I am pretty good with challenges so I am challenging my self to complete the entire six weeks of this program!

Reasons I want to lose weight:
My thighs won’t rub.
I will be able to breathe easier.
Anxiety won’t be as bad.
Exercise will be easier.
I will live longer.
I will look better and more attractive.
My cholesterol will be reduced.
I will be at less risk to develop type 2 diabetes.
I will feel better physically.
I will have more stamina.
I will have more energy.
I will feel in control.

Be Blessed,
Dawn

Yesterday was the first day of my second attempt at The Beck Solution, and I am excited about it!

My first go-around with Beck was very successful, but a week-long vacation in Florida absolutely did me in. I tried to jump back in at the point where I left but it just didn't work for me.

So I bought a new copy of the workbook, and I am beginning again like a complete newbie.

Yay, Me!

I am starting the Beck program again for the 2nd time. I didn't actually finish it the first time, but I do know that while I was using it, that it was helpful. I have fallen off the wagon again and having a great deal of trouble with overeating and eating very unhealthy foods such as sweets and fast food. I plan to finish the entire program this time. I actually only have about 5 pound to lose. I know that doesnt' sound like a lot, but it feels overwhelming at the moment.

Advantages
1. Feeling more attractive
2. Having respect for myself and my choices
3. Clothes fitting more comfortably
4. Being healthier
5. Liking what I look like

Hi - I've been a "Becker" for several years now and was down to my goal weight for over a year. I thought I’d share a little about my past two years so that if you read my reasons, you’ll have a glimpse of where I’m coming from…

Except for my faith and my husband, I’ve given up most of the things I treasured so that I could take on a primary caretaker role for my husband. He’s chronically ill, has had severe heart issues for 15+ years and, just over a year ago, I gave him a kidney as his had failed. His recovery has been difficult at best and he continues to struggle to do things that I can take for granted like walking around our home. I don’t regret the things I’ve given up as I am committed to enabling him to live with as much dignity as he can, but it hasn’t been easy either… I’ve started over eating again and have regained 15-20# of the 65#s I previously lost. So I’m going back to review the days of “Beck”, one by one.

Day 1 – Advantages of eating and exercising so that my weight stays between 145 & 150 means that:

…I deal w/challenging issues in a straightforward and timely manner.
…I feel good about myself.
…I’m in methodical, dependable routines that keep me fit and relieve stress.
…I enjoy good food.
…I feel “tidy”, my habits reflect “a time & place for everything, and everything in its time & place”.
…My home is neat and welcoming - a safe-haven for all, including me!
…I’m prepared for whatever life throws at me.

My ticker represents 6 years of learning and losing (and regaining a bit) - I'm NOT going back! I *AM* fit 4 life!!

1. Effortlessly fit into the clothes in my closet.
2. Getting ready to go out to a special occasion becomes easy.
3. When I'm sitting in my car, my thighs won't rub together and my skirt won't ride up.
4. I won't be obsessed with unhealthy foods that make me feel like crap shortly after I pig out on them.
5. I won't beat myself up and feel like a failure because my weight keeps creeping higher and higher and I'm powerless to stop it.
6. My face looks better in photos.
7. I will have better energy throughout the day when I'm not fixated on foods that give me a short-term reward but make me feel worse over all.
8. I can learn healthy habits and maintain an appropriate weight even when I get pregnant.
9. When I look at my body in the mirror, I won't feel sad and weak.
10. Even though I think eating something is going to make me feel better, I always forget how short that feeling lasts. And then I just feel worse.
11. I'll feel proud of the accomplishment of sticking with something that is difficult.

Changes that can occur within a week:

1 Healthier knees so I can get around on-foot or by bicycle when I don't have a vehicle. Knees feel better with every 4 # that I drop.
2 Mental clarity. This really does follow my eating style after a couple of days.
3 More confident. I will interact more with other people.
4 The house will stay cleaner--motivated by the three above benefits: healthier, clearer-thought, wanting friends over.
5 My animals will love me more; I will be consistent in attending to them. I am basically now, but they like to go places with me and have me sing to them and such.
6 I'll get my yard better maintained.
7 I'll have places ready for the trees I ordered yesterday.
8 I will schedule better, by not nibbling and messing up the kitchen in-between meals.

Just for thought: I was reading a book on goal setting in which a researcher reported that he studied what motivators worked for those wanting to lose weight. He found that having to publish a picture of oneself in a Speedo by a certain date in a public place, like an office bulletin board (or on Facebook, I would assume now) was a better motivator than a cash reward! I guess that just shows how much we feed judged (and perhaps judge others) regarding our bodies.

If I get up the nerve to do this, I'll add it as motivator to my list, though it might be better to have as an exercise in self esteem; I posted a picture of myself and refused to be ashamed!

- Buy and wear attractive and fashionable clothes and shoes more easily.

Be Well.

I'm so glad someone posted here recently. I had been meaning to start revisiting my reasons, but kept letting it slide. I actually have about 30 of them, though the ones Heidi said are the more important now for me, too. I know from experience and from other people sharing that it is possible to get into nice clothes and look good, but to still be unhappy with your eating. The peace of feeling that I am not at odds with food and our life as it is, with all its food temptations, is very important. Thank you for reminding me! I wish the name of this thread was record and revisit the advantages of losing weight. Then more people would be posting to it and getting us all to review more often. emoticon

January 29 2011 Day One: I've read "the book" and "the workbook", gathered my "equipment", prepared my reasons why I want to lose weight, written a Day One Blog also!! SLENDERELLA introduced me to the Judith S. Beck concept, and I'm enthusiastic about learning better cognitive strategies for maintenance of weight loss!!

I know we have some new people joining us. If you are using the original Beck Diet Solution book, you'll see its organized by days and Day One is to make a list of all the reasons you want to lose weight. I've been doing this for about two years now and every once in a while I revisit my list-- some of the old reasons have been fulfilled, and some I'm still working on. Here is my list for 2011

1. Feel proud of myself and know I can succeed in this
2. Feel in control of my eating choices and my health
3. Be confident in my body and how I look
4. Have more energy
5. Know that I can face a crisis without turning to food.

(alot of the more physical ones I originally had: fitting into old clothes hanging in the closet, being able to cross my legs, being able to shop "regular" sizes are pretty much accomplished--its interesting that the advantages have become much more internal now, although my current weight (191) might be other people's starting point)

3.i can wrap a towel around me after showering
4.i feel better in the sauna
5.i wont running sore so often
6. my pants will not be worn beetween tighs so much
7.i can buy sexy underwear again
8.i will not have to spend a fortune to get business-clothes
9.i wont blame myself for overeating anymore
10. i take lot of stress out of eating and mealplanning
11. i have more choices when buying clothes
12. i accomplish something that makes me trouble for years

Here is my ARC (advantage response card):

1. I'll set an example.
2. I want to enjoy my body before becoming a mom (I want to have my first kid when I'm 28, I'm currently 25 years old.)
3. I'll be able to wear cute outfits.
4. I'll feel better about myself.
5. I'll feel stronger.
6. I'll be healthier.
7. I'll feel successful.
8. I'll be more of myself (not as shy).
9. NO MORE SPARE TIRE!! (around my middle lol)

BTW, I don't want to offend with my #2 advantage but I have planned on when me and my husband would like children and I want to not only be able to be fit before being a mom but also do as much as I can to prepare to maintain before bringing a child into this world so I can get back there and raise a healthy family.
