Hi Everyone! Pleased to meet you!

I have a bunch but will mention some really important ones for me:

1-Your cancer, diabetes, stroke risk is higher when you are heavier. Cancer runs in my family.
2-Really tired of being overweight and then skinny over the course of one year and then the cycle repeats itself the following year. Want to get a handle on my bad habits.
3-I love the energy I feel when I eat clean, get enough sleep and exercise. I want that to be consistent.
4-I want to look good in my skinny jeans and shorts again.
5-Tired of having a bulging tummy while in my bathing suit.
6-I like BDS strategy when it comes to cravings and hunger.

Thanks everyone!

I'l looking forward to working my way through this book.

My "Advantages to Losing Weight" card looks like this:
1. I will have more energy and eagerly participate in life
2. I will have more confidence
3. I will wear more fitted clothes and look good!
4. I will be inspired to sew my own clothes again
5. I will be more outgoing and participate in more activities
6. I will receive a more positive response from other people (because of my more outgoing attitude)
7. I will feel more in control of my life, better able to make positive changes
8. I will prevent future medical problems tied to weight, poor eating habits and lack of exercise
9. I will look forward to seeing old friends and co-workers (rather than being embarrassed by my weight gain)
10. I will use my success as inspiration to declutter other areas of my life: possessions, negative relationships, harmful habits

Here's my ARC, or as I call it "The Reasons Why". It's a little wordy, sorry. It's a note on my phone, and I've set reminders to read it. Sometimes I have Siri read it to me, which is a little hilarious...

Because I want my joints to feel good when I wake up in the morning. I don't want creakiness in my right hip, right shoulder and elbow.

Because I want to fight inflammation, as it has links to dementia and heart disease.

Because I want to feel great in my skin again. To look great in clothes, including lingerie. I want to feel sexy again.

Because I have spent most of my life knowing that I look really good, and I haven't felt that way as much lately. I want that confidence back.

I want to know I am in control. I don't want to end up like mom, out of control. I'M in control.

I want to buy myself lots of cute clothes.

I want to be physically ready for all the work that is coming down the road. I want to be stronger, leaner, more flexible.

I want my neck and arms to look better. I want my flat stomach back. I want to be able to look in a mirror from behind and see the difference in my behind!

I want to feel strong. Like I know I really am. So my outside will match my inside.

I want to be as healthy as possible, for my hair. Dr. Northrup says carrying excess weight can add to hair loss.

I want to be a positive role model from my daughter, to show her the power of choice, determination, commitment, perseverance.

I want my man to be proud of me, and I want to feel that he's proud to be seen with me.

I recorded my reasons to lose weight. I placed them on cards to place in my purse, also in my daily book to be read each time the book is opened. It is what I call my book of everything. It contains the actives through the day. I use it a lot.

Day1- Advantages of Losing Weight

I"ll be more in control of my mind and body
I'll nip this pre-diabetic thing in the bud and improve other health issues.
I'll stop feeling the first impression people have of me is how flipping big I am.
People won't see me and my athletic husband as a mis-matched couple.
Take physical intimacy to a new level.
I'll do more things with the grandkids
I'll fit in. Into things like theater seats, restaurant booths, plane seats, chairs with arms, tight spaces and more.
I'll enjoy shopping for clothes. Less frumpy styles, more stores, expand my choices!
Looking in the mirror will be much less painful!

So, since I just recently rewrote my ARCs, I didn't have any advantages to add to them. But I did write a Response Card to remind myself to read my response cards and set up my cell phone for the reminders. I'm also really happy and grateful to reread the chapter, because I remembered some important things, like reading them twice a day until you no longer struggle with dieting--I haven't been reading them as often as I should AT ALL. I also took the idea of reading them "Daily, at scheduled times" to heart more. I was never good at reading them at the same time daily, though I did read them twice a day.

And here's my list (warning: it's incredibly vain emoticon )

1. I like feeling small.
2. I'll have more fun going out and will want to more.
3. I'll have more fun shopping for clothes and will be more stylish.
4. I'll be happier when I look in the mirror.
5. I'll get hit on more, which is fun.
6. I'll look younger.
7. I'll be the prettiest.
8. I'll be able to wear a smaller size.
9. I'll have more confidence.
10. I'll feel like I deserve to buy expensive clothes and potions to look younger and good.
11. I want to be able to eat at maintenance on purpose.
12. I'll feel younger.
13. I'll have more energy.
14. Food won't be so important, and I won't think about it much.
15. I'll live longer and be in better health.
16. I won't be self-conscious.

I'm 4'10.5". A normal BMI for my height tops out at 121.

Day 1 task: write out the reasons I want to diet, as a reminder of why I'm going to all this effort:

I will feel more in control of my life and my body
I will reduce chance of diabetes
I will be less likely to have a recurrence of cancer
I might even reduce chance of Alzheimer's and dementia
I'll get more joy out of shopping for clothes
I will feel happier when I look in the mirror.
My clothes will fit better, which helps me feel more confident.
I'll feel healthier. My feet will hurt less too.
I will be more trim & physically fit. Plus, I'll have more energy to do the things I like to do, like gardening and hiking.
I'll live longer and have a better quality of life as I age.

Day 1

For me the advantages of losing weight are:

1. Fitting into all the great clothes I have stored in boxes from when I was thinner.
2. Feeling attractive
3. Feeling like I have accomplished something just for me
4. Feeling healthy
5. Being a good example to my family and friends

I am presently 8.8 pounds from my goal and never want to be back here again. I want to maintain my goal weight and stop the up and down of the scale.

Day 1:

Advantages of losing weight:

1. HEALTH
Very important for me, I am worried about having an increased chance of getting sick when I am overweight.

2. EXAMPLE
I have two daughters and I want to lead by example, by having a healthy relationship with food, and eating healthy most of the time.

3. APPEARANCE
I used to look quite nice when I wasn't overweight. Looking forward to looking that way and fitting in the second half of my wardrobe again.

4. FITNESS
I like being fit. When I am fit my whole life seams lighter and easier, and I have much more energy. When I lose weight it is easier to get fit and maintain that fitness.

I am currently 187 at 5'8", and would like to get back down to around 160 again. I reached that weight about 2 years ago but an injury made it difficult to run and then slowly I gained a lot of what I lost before.

1. I'll be healthier.
2. I'll be around for my son who is autistic longer.
3. I'll think I look better.
4. I won't feel so self-conscious in public.
5. I'll be able to wear clothes I like.
6. Smaller size clothes are easier to find.

March 1, 2017 - I am 10.9 lbs from my goal of 140. I don't know if this is my final goal or not. I know we are told to expect to weigh more as we age, but I want to know how to figure out a realistic goal I can both be happy with and maintain. I am 5' 4.5" and weighed 122 when I was 18.

Day 1 The advantages of losing weight.
I want to reach goal weight, then I want to stay there plus or minus 5 pounds.

As Gaby1948 says and is so right, THE MAIN REASON IS FOR HEALTH, and there are collateral benefits.

Advantages - improving and maintaining good health which also means disease prevention as well as having a fitter body.
Collateral benefits
1 Preventing or delaying conditions associated with aging or poor nutrition - i.e. heart, lung, brain (alzheimers), metabolism (type 2 diabetes), cancer, mobility (joints, muscles, bones)
2 Feeling more energetic and capable, have better balance, agility, flexibility, strength and endurance, to be able to work harder and enjoy playing and exercising more.
3 Having a better strength-to-body ratio, to be able to do more chin-ups and be a better rock climber. Rock climbing is my passion.
4 Looking sleeker, having a better silhouette, losing the menopause belly.
5 Having a healthier relationship with food The above goals I achieved when I was at goal weight in 2011 for 6 months - I want to achieve them again and keep them for life. I want to achieve and maintain a balanced, healthy, fit, disciplined lifestyle. I don't want to yo-yo or rollercoast. I want to gain the mental side (thinking like a thin person) of weight loss and maintenance.

6 I just added this one after reading through today's posts - thanks CarinEve
Example - to set a healthy example for my family, for fitness, nutrition and attitude toward food.

This is my second time through
- the 1st was October 2016 - 10 pounds from goal weight
- this one is March 1, 2017

I am now 5 pounds away from goal weight - and hope to be at goal weight by March 31, 2017.

- Improved fitness and nutrition, energy and confidence are my rewards.
It is our choices...that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.

Never underestimate the inevitability of gradualness.

I read Day 1 and have my advantage response card ready.(this is probably my 4th or 5th reading in as many years)
Main points from the previous chapters and Day 1 are
- a better understanding of what sabotaging thoughts really are, and
-knowing that by reading the ARC, i will internalize the reasons. It was the case for me in the past, but i slacked reading ARC and lost touch with them.

Good reading to all the Challenge participants . I am looking forward to share our experiences and progress.

Lets have a great Day 1!

I have used all these great principles in the past and was quite successful.
Here I am on day one re - learning and absorbing all the wonderful tools again.

1. The feeling of losing extra weight so my my other body parts gain from it (knees).
2. I want to have more energy from 3:00 - 9:00 pm each day.
3. I really want to wear the stylish smaller size clothes I have and discard the size I'm
currently wearing - never to return to again.
4. I need to get excited about food again while making healthier choices.
5. Realize it's important to be proud of myself no matter what stage I'm at.
6. Live longer by choosing better options
7. Change my thought process on eating the RIGHT way.
8. I want to be stronger at saying NO to poison foods and many other things in life.
9. I will look forward to rising at 4:30 am each morning and exercising one hour before work.
10. I will finally realize once and for all Mountain Dew is very unhealthy for me and contains
way too much sugar.
11. More to come....

I will print multiple copies and make them very visible so I read many times a day.

This will be easier :)

I'll be able to wear smaller clothes in any style.
I'll feel pride - not guilt - in what I eat.
I'll like how I look; others will like how I look.
I'll be healthy and disease-proof, giving me greater odds of living a longer, more quality life.
I'll feel joyful when I step on the scale and look in the mirror.
I'll be confident in how I look - at home, work, and the beach.
My back, neck and feet won't hurt.
Exercising will be easier and I'll be able to do more.
My mental healthy will flourish.
I'll have clear skin.
This will be my greatest accomplishment.

my focus is on loving my WHOLE self....no longer interested in changing me....accepting me as i am today.
for me this translates into kindness, food choices that are made in love. :)
losing weight is not my goal but a byproduct of caring for me like i would my gbabies:)
best wishes and happy to be a part....love learning!

Learning to care for myself like I would for my grand babies :)

Beck provided a list of benefits in her book ... and after doing some soul searching ... I added things to make my own personal list of Advantages of Losing Weight:

Ill be in better health ... physically and emotionally.
Ill have more energy ... to live my life more fully and do all the things I am missing out on.
Ill feel better ... physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Ill like myself more.
Ill feel more in control of my behaviors and emotional eating.
Ill increase my self-esteem ... feeling at peace with myself.
Ill feel better in my own body.
Ill feel more freedom.
Ill live longer ... to be here longer with my beloved healthy hubby.
My bionic knees will last longer.
Ill be able to wear the clothes I already own.
Ill be able to purge existing clothes and have only the clothes that fit me on hand ... forever. No more multiple sizes ... past, present and future sizes.
Ill be able to wear the clothes I truly like ... no more passing items up coz do I buy it in todays size, next size down coz I plan to lose weight or my dream size so I can own it forever.

Once I continually remind myself of ALL the reasons I want to lose weight ... dieting will be easier!!! Judith Beck

No more dieting ... focusing on food.
Im changing behaviors ... focusing on ME.

Change your mind ... and the rest will follow.

At first it is hard, doesn't have to be perfect.
I wrote a rather general list to start with, then revised as I discovered new advantages.
Now, after years my favorite advantages are being free from cravings and overeating, and that dieting is quite easy.
Some Sparkers put on the list some activities that they will be able to do once they lost X pounds, or being able to walk without pain.
Time will tell!

Hi Everyone

What I've read here has been so constructive that I'm encouraged to share.

My motivation is:

Health related - I need to be better friend to my liver (NASH).

Work related - I fast-fix snack and sugary food under stress and as procrastination. This is totally what my liver does not need.

Social - 5 grand babies aged 7 weeks to 3 years. They deserve a Nana who can share activities...and they are only going to get bigger and faster.

Personal - Dealt a low blow from someone dear and my self-esteem has taken a battering. It would help to feel and look the best I can.

I still have a lot to offer! I would like to feel stronger, healthier and more in control.

Looking forward to the Beck journey. :)

Oooooh, your "not hiding from the camera" one went straight to my list too. It is an important one because friends and family WANT us in their pictures, we are part of their memories, so dodging the camera makes me feel badly.

The more reasons the better, Lori. emoticon
I started with 21 reasons and added five more after getting to the end of the book the first time through. During our recent reboot, I reexamined them and realized those 26 reasons really boil down to restatements of nine main ideas. If you care to, visit my Nov 7 blog.

I wrote my list of advantages and posted them around the house and in my daily note book. I have a very large list. All the more reasons to continue.

Just a little note to share that I have been doing the ARC more regularly lately.
Now i can *feel* that what i wrote is becoming/has become a reality. So it is becoming a * reaffirmation* card and feels very lovely.

Starting over--again! I am happy to be starting over again here. Thank you.

The advantages for me:
1. To look better
2. To feel better
3. To wear my beautiful, smaller clothes again that have been hanging in the back of the closet!
4. To have more energy
5. To be more active
6. To dance again
7. To be strong and balanced and walk without my cane.
