Day 1, I have been putting off starting but I finally feel I am ready to begin because the longer I wait, the harder it will be to jump in. I am not sure I will be able to post on line for all days. We only have a hotspot for our internet and when I log on hubby complains about the data going down too fast. But it is OK for him to use the data.

My goal in not really to lose weight but to gain control over my eating the right foods.

One of the advantages is helping me deal with my frustration in life. I know that I have a better attitude and less mood swings when I eat healthy.

Advantages:
1. I only live once and I want to get the most out of my life.

2. I do not want to suffer from chronic diseases that can be prevented by the foods I put in my mouth.

3. I like being able to move without aches and pains.

4. I enjoy physical activities, like running races with my grand daughter (I have a secret motivation to beat her best time)

5. I want to nourish my body so that if something happens it will be able to repair itself quickly.

6. I will lose excess body fat. Although I am at my weight goal, I am carrying too much body fat.

7. I will feel good about how I look and confident .

8. I like the idea of being independent in old age.

9. I will be free of the SUGAR SALT AND FAT trap that the food industry has set.

Advantages of weight loss:
* Physical complaints (foot problems, arthritis) may be less bothersome or who knows, heal...
* Better for my blood pressure and therefore for my kidneys (slight disfunction).
* If my feet should heal I can take long walks again, dance, do aerobics and other forms of exercise that require standing and walking! Also my job will be easier and I could maybe work more and earn more (my work requires standing on my feet).
* I will probably have more energy and stamina
* It will be easier to move and bend and twist!

Advantages of not overeating / bingeing and sticking to a food plan:
* Better sleep pattern
* Better sleep means better moods
* Clarity about what to eat when and how much of it.
* Avoid a roller coaster of bingeing / overeating and then being 'good' again.
* Having the time and focus to occupy myself with other areas of my life beside food.

A very long list, but here goes the Reader's Digest version.
I'll do my job better.
I'll age slowly and gracefully.
I'll not have to worry about how to dress myself.
I'll have a peaceful relationship with food.
I'll have the energy to get the things I want done in the day.
I'll be a good example for my children and grandchildren.

The list is a whole lot longer, but I thought I'd share the top ones.

ēBeing able to comfortably walk for miles each day on vacation, to feel confident in unknown surroundings not worrying if people are staring at me, to not feel out of breath walking, handle 10 days of walking 10+ miles without feeling miserable, so my thighs dont rub, less body acne, my clothes will fit better, to protect my knees and my old-growing body, less back pain, more stamina in all activities, enjoyment of outdoor activities more, not feel like i need to wear frumpy clothes until i reach my idea size (im tired of always waiting to buy clothes), feeling comfortable trying on clothes, not always feeling like the fat friend or the fat one at the office.

I so appreciate reading through everyone's reasons and advantages. The depth of humor in some is so inspiring and joyful :-)

I'm going to go work out, eat a healthy breakfast and put some thought into articulating my own reasons. I truly need to bring some grounded purpose and attainable goals back to my life…

Til later, Becky

My reasons for losing weight fell into four categories and I made an Advantage Response Card for each one:

Health
Fitness
Appearance
Self Image

While thinking and writing these I had a revelation! There is one that matters a lot to me, even though it's a bit silly. No more Fat Knees! lol

The only time I don't have fat knees is when I am really, truly slim. I'm 67 and that hasn't happened since I was about 57. So there's a goal for me, hmmm? No More
Fat Knees!

The things you learn about yourself when you begin to write. Sometimes I don't know what I think until it comes out my pencil.

Advantages

I separate the reasons / advantages to having a binge free life from the reasons / advantages of weight loss.
As being binge free does not automatically mean weight loss.

Advantages to learning to handle food well (in other words to not binge or overeat):
* Having a normal, balanced eating pattern
* Having peace in my existence - an end to the roller coaster of bingeing and restricting
* Being a better - more calm and balanced - partner for my husband
* Having more energy and better sleep; not missing sleep because of binges
* Having clarity about when to eat what
* Having the time and mental space to focus on other areas of my life than food and weight issues
* Feeling that 'I am the boss', being in control
* Having a chance to (later) lose weight

Advantages of weight loss:
* Moving with more ease
* Chance to have my feet heal:
- Being able to walk longer distances, to dance, to walk a dog
- Performing my work with more ease (giving massages = standing on my feet)
* Feeling better about my appearance
* Being able to do yoga and maybe teach it too, with more ease
* Diminish the risk of diseases like cancer, strokes, high blood pressure, kidney problems, diabetes, heart disease.
* Better for my joints (hips)
* Easier to work and thus make money, better for the mortgage, maybe my husband could work less hours
* Looking better, fitting into clothes I like again.
* Being able to bend over without getting out of breath, more flexibility in turning and bending

Just started the pink book, and have blogged about my advantages on my SparkPage.

Instead of having one card, I've put each advantage on a separate card. I'll make note of any related non-scale victories that come along as time goes on. I think this is what will work best for me.

I'll be reviewing my cards before each meal, before snacks if there are any, and before I go to bed.

1. To be more physically active.
It has been on my heart, long before anyone called it "a bucket list", to learn to scuba dive and go somewhere or many places and dive.

2. So that I don't feel rolls of flesh when I lay in bed. So annoying!!!!

3. So that I will fit a whole closet full of clothes that I out grew or ordered the wrong size on
line.

4. I do not want to succumb to heart disease or stroke, like so many of my family members.

Thank you to those who have posted their reasons. Here are mine:
1. I want to fit into my clothes again.
2. I want to nourish my body, love my body.
3. I want to feel healthy.
4. Regain my love of exercise.

Can only come up with four so far--need to look at the Beck book again. Will come back and edit later

Daily affirmation:
* I am a good person, and I deserve respect.
* I choose to respect myself today by refusing to engage in verbal or emotional self-abuse.
* I have been successful at many things I have set out to do, and I can learn to do better at the things that give me problems.

10. I want to look good in the clothes I wear.

Day 1: Write the Advantages of Sticking to a Healthy Eating Plan
1. It's a PROMISE I'm making to myself, one I am loathe to break.
2. Eating well is a privilege I have that a dear friend with terminal cancer does not. Let me honor her by taking good care of the healthy body I do have.
3. The serenity prayer encourages me to change the things I can. In aging, there are so many things I cannot change, but how I eat is one within my control. It is empowering to do this.
4. It's fun to be both the rat and the scientist observing the antics of this silly rat with her self-sabotaging thoughts.
5. I'd like to live a long, healthy life and visualize myself as a free spirited 90 year old artist.
6. Vanity: How I look to myself, to my bf, to others.
7. Confidence doing yoga at the beach or wearing a wetsuit out windsurfing.
8. No more pesky candy bar wrappers to dispose of from my car to hide the shame, and no more trips out to 7/11 to satisfy a craving for candy.
9. The good feeling of driving this bus called my life, rather than having my addiction to treats and the greedy food industry driving.
10. It's fun to think of myself as a hip, chic quinoi fussy eater and all that that gestalt entails.
11. The is my spiritual practice. Daily. Not unlike a monk's meditation practice. I do not take it blythely.
12. In a phase of life (retirement) when I have few structures and little need of gumption, It's valuable to have one important area requiring structure, character, grit.
13. This is something the poor dear Oprah cannot do, but I can.
14. It feels good to checkmarks in my logbook and the scale go down.
15. I want my walk to match my talk in life.
16. It gets easier as my resistance muscle gets stronger.
17. Spill over of skills and strengthening of character learned here to other areas of life, especially to the really big challenges of later life.
18. I enjoy learning: it's an interesting topic, the brain, habit breaking, CBT, motivation and it's interesting to learn about the idiosyncrcies of this rat.
19. "Leisureville" is NOT my ideal way to spend my retirement years.

This sounds GREAT Rose! emoticon and you will learn this pretty soon...be sure and give yourself CREDIT...but I am GIVING you credit for now! emoticon

I am sorry to say I don't know what TBDS stands for? And, yes, in general ALL of us had "other issues" that led to our eating "problems" I know FOR SURE I did, from a young child ON! But with Beck your way of thinking is ABOUT to CHANGE...and I am SO thankful that I can say mine did as well! This is a marvelous program and it was MADE for me! Praying the same is true for you!

Advantage response cards

1. To accomplish something I've tried to achieve all my life
2. To not be restricted by my weight
3. Look good in my clothes
4. Longevity of life
5. More energy
6. To not have to wear plus size clothing
7. Accept that I am worthy of good health

I'm starting over again with TBDS. I am fully aware my food issue and weight issue are not resolved by a diet...I've tried diets and I'm still over weight.

My problem is my way of thinking...I'm about to make some changes in that area and hopefully it will spill over to help me shed some of these extra pounds.

Today is Day 1 for me.

For me, health is a big advantage of losing weight. My mother's death last year has made losing weight more important - she had heart disease and other maladies that being overweight makes more likely. I want to avoid those.

Other than that, it's especially important to me to obtain and maintain a healthy and slim figure as I get older. As I've been getting heavier, it makes me feel slower and older and unattractive.

This is my second go at The Beck Solution hopefully with more determination and success this time. I made the mistake of setting the first time directly in the midst of holidays and family illnesses. So forget all that and move forward with cheer.

1. Not to be a burden to other people because of ill health
2. Be able to live alone in my own home longer
3. Lower BMI, blood pressure and cholesterol
4. Increase energy
5. Look better & be happier with myself.
6. Look and feel better in my clothes.
7. Pick anything out of my closet at any time -- and having it FIT!
8. Not have to have several sizes of clothes in my closet.

Day 1:
Today was my day 1. I made my advantages card and put some reminders on my phone to read it.

My son's graduation
I will feel so much better about myself
I'll feel ready to date and meet men
I feel better and have more energy
I'll live longer and be here for my kids
Health problems will improve
I'll feel like doing more things.
I'll enjoy buying and wearing clothes
I won't be afraid to have my picture taken (copied this from another poster here) :-)

1. I CAN do this. I HAVE done it before so I know I CAN and that knowledge is motivating.
2. I DECIDE I am the kind of person who makes a promise to HERSELF and HONORS that promise. I DEMONSTRATE I am indeed such a person; it's not just wishful thinking.
3. This is MY thing, a promise to MYSELF, not something I SHOULD do to please someone else.
4. Serenity Prayer: As I age, there are more and more things in the bucket "Things I cannot change". Eating "on plan" is still within my power. It is one of the dwindling number of things I actually have the power to change, and so I will grab hold. And thus feel empowered and less out of control of the ravages of aging.
5. View of myself as a healthy, fit, determined, strong, admirable, "together" person.
6. (secondarily) Other's view of me as healthy, fit, determined, strong, "together".
7. I will live a long vibrant life: I visualize a serene, wise 88 year old woman
8. It's fascinating to be in a science experiment as both the scientist and the white rat, watching what odd things this rat decides to do. "How interesting" me the scientist notices, that at 7AM, the rat vowed to stay on plan, yet at 4pm, she almost caved. But didn't. Woo hoo.
9. Lifelong learning: This is my term project for the course of a lifetime. I WILL learn to do this. I WILL learn about my own mind. I WILL learn strategies to counteract that feisty lizard brain within.
10.Progressing on this PROJECT builds strength of character that will help me in all areas of life, especially as I age.
11.Spillover of skills and success to other "projects" in life, helping with progress toward other goals and values: such as greater creativity, greater productivity, greater industriousness, dealing gracefully with aging, overcoming aversion to the (many) drudgeries of life (exercising, housecleaning) when the lizard brain whines "I DON'T WANNA!!!"
12. Feels good, empowering, to succeed at this "game", to see progress, to realize I CAN DO THIS.
13. It gets easier the more I stick to it. Every time I so no to a "slip", it's easier to say no the next day.
14. The fit of clothes, at the beach, doing yoga.

The best to everyone else on the team on your progress!!!

oops! Should have added:

The reasons I want to lose weight:

SO tired of being on the diet rollercoaster - flitting from one diet after another and remaining fat.

I want to regain my health.

I want to look better.

I'm tired of plus sized clothing.

I want to turn another "diet" into a lifestyle.

Hello, I am starting up with the Beck Diet Solution again. I am at a healthy weight but I have a love-hate relationship with some foods and I want to to be an "ex" with some of them.

So, I am focusing on healthy eating, rather than losing weight and here are my reasons:
1. Reduce the risk of chronic diseases
2. Less aches and pains
3. Mobility
4. Energy
5. Eliminate and/or control cravings for junk food
6. Get rid of excess body fat and keep it off (hips and thighs)
7. Positive attitude

Hello. Hope everyone is having a wonderful experience with their diets. Here are the reasons I want to lose weight:
1. I'll feel confident enough to wear a bikini and proud of how I look.
2. I'll no longer have anxiety about family functions, trips, or special occasions because of my appearance.
3. I'll want to post pictures of myself online because I love the way I look when I'm thin and fit.
4. I'll be able to run faster and further, eventually accomplishing my goal of running a 10K in 2013.
5. I'll be able to wear the clothes in my closet that are too tight and it will be fun and exciting to shop for cute, fashionable clothing again.
6. I'll look better and more attractive.
7. My husband will be proud of me.
8. Improving my appearance will help me feel better about myself.
9. My thighs won't rub together anymore.
10. I'll have a flat stomach.

Hi,

My BDS Workbook came in the mail today, and I've decided to begin immediately. It says "6 weeks to train your brain to think like a thin person". Well, I've been trying for 68 years (!) with no long-term results so far!! Hopefully, this will set me on the road.

The main advantage for me will be to feel in control! Everything else derives from that. Here are the TOP TEN!
1. To feel in control.
2. To be able to overcome the constant urge to binge.
3. To feel better emotionally, without sinking into depression.
4. To "like" my body more.
5. To feel comfortable joining groups which go out on walking trips.
6. To be more assertive.
6. To have more energy and stamina.
7. To have more energy to go out and sell my music programmes.
8. To be better able to cope with daily chores.
9. To be better able to cope with frustration and disappointment.
10. To look better in everyday clothes and in a bathing suit.

All the best to everyone on this team!
Batya

So I don't have to be worried that my shoes, underwear, heart rate monitor, hat, bra, wedding ring, coat, sweatshirt, or airplane seatbelt won't fit.

So I don't have to untag Facebook pictures of myself, avoid going to the doctor, lie on my driver's license, feel shock in seeing myself in photos, shop in the plus size department, or cringe thinking about my high school reunion.

So J will be proud of me, want to be with me, and feel attracted to me.

So my health isn't compromised by a bad back, 51% body fat, triglycerides of 254, and blood pressure that makes the nurse frown. So I donít have to worry that something is going physically wrong with me, like a blood clot, heart attack, or stroke.

So I don't have to miss out on cross country skiing with my daughter, rock climbing with my kids, or being able to complete the hiking trail. So I can run a 5k, join Jís volleyball team, and bike a century. Heck, so I wonít have difficulty doing daily tasks like getting up off the floor and tying my shoes, etc.

So I can fit into cute outdoorsy clothes at REI. So I wonít have to struggle to get clothes on, have clothes that ride up or are too tight, have to wonder whether Iíve outgrown something since the last time I wore it, or have to buy more clothes because Iíve gotten too big.

So I set a good example for my kids, and be alive to be a grandma to their children. And not just any grandma, but one whoís active, lively, and able to enjoy old age.

So I can be a fit, up for anything, strong, energetic, active person, with a positive outlook and optimism again.

So I can look in the mirror and feel good about myself, knowing that I accomplished something important. So I donít feel so dumpy, but I can actually feel attractive again.

So I donít always look around to see if Iím the fattest one in the room. So I can make a better first impression on people, and not have to feel self-conscious about whether they think Iím weak, out of control, or killing myself with my extra pounds.

So I can feel more in control, no hiding food, eating out of control, or feeling ashamed of how much I eat. So I am not constantly on the hunt for food at every convenience store, vending machine, meeting, and social event. So that I donít schedule extra trips to coffee shops to do work when what I really want to do is eat. So that food doesnít rule my life.

So I can live longer.

Lost 65 pounds just in time for my 40th birthday. Now maintaining my weight loss, training for a half marathon and lifting weights seriously. Love my body and love my life. It was all worth it!

GRETCHENDZ, I have all my response cards old school on index cards, but I put them in my handbag in the same pocket as my blackberry. So everytime I reach for my bb on the bus on my way to work, the cards are there, so I read them before I get to my emails.
