eating from stress is one of my biggest issues. the thing i am learning to do is find something else to do. write on your blog on spark people, knit, crotech, go out and take a walak. i know it is easier said than done but it is helping

One thing for sure is water. But I know what you mean about getting hungry a while after exercising. I usually have a planned snack in my car on the way home from the pool. Often it is a measured amount of almonds and some water.

Judi, I decided this week that I just can't have high-carb food or sweets in the house anymore for awhile, too. I'm doing so well most of the time choosing to eat healthfully and to ignore both feeling a little hungry and to avoid high calorie snacks I keep around for my teen. (Granola, dried fruit, soy-cream sandwiches for treat, stuff like that.) However when it gets tough, sometimes it's just a little bit too much! It's not worth it, so I'm cleaning house and swearing off until the cravings aren't so intense.
I'm also not at the point where I agree that exercise helps to suppress appetite. It does for me, for about 30 minutes after a workout. But then it comes raging back. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas how to take the edge off?

Carolyn, Seattle

Gwen, Glad you got it figured out.

I'm struggling to stop eating mindlessly. I've had so much personal stress this past year, and at work there is a lot of stress.

I should have come to this thread earlier tonight. I decided to eat cookies. I had gotten rid of tons of sweets after the shiva, but there were still a few cookies left. I ate some and threw the rest away. There was a moment where I might have been able to stop myself. But I didn't. I should try to get help from the team. I am not good at that.

So how are we doing on using this thread? Is anyone in crisis? Anyone willing to be helped during a crisis? I hope so.

Thanks for your help! I usually eat a pretty large, high protein lunch, but I had a slightly smaller, lower protein lunch than usual. I did have an apple and some almonds, and felt a little better, but really didn't stop feeling slightly hungry until after dinner. It was hard to keep my mind off of snacking, which hasn't happened in such an intrusive, nagging way for a while. I'm glad I didn't go over my calorie limit (I was 150 under), but it was really tough! I'm going to beef up lunches going forward, I think.

I really appreciate the support! Thanks!

That is very good advice. I was a little late on this one too. We just got home from out of town. But I did feel like adding something too.

I was going to suggest gum.

Don't know if this is too late or not. What did you do? I make sure to have full meals. It was only in the beginning that I still felt hungry after a meal, though it can sometimes feel light. Even then, it wasn't real hunger, but just that urge to eat. I allow myself coffee with milk or even just milk in between meals if I am very hungry, but nothing else. Usually waiting will solve the problem as the food gets processed, but if it was a very light meal, perhaps you should allow yourself more food.

I hear you. I experience this often after a meal. For me i know it's the desire to continue to eating. I remind myself to STOP and distract myself. A shower, a phone call, taking a walk is the way I handle it. I wouldn't have anything else to eat until my next planned snack or meal. There are times that no amount of food will satisfy me so reminding myself to STOP makes sense.

The indecision for me is the hardest part.

Hi Buddies!

I am still hungry after lunch! I'm tempted to have a second serving of soup, but it's 250+ calories. Should I have an apple and wait 20 minutes? I just need to get busy with something else, right? This is tolerable... everyone feels hungry sometimes, it's temporary.

That's all I got. Anyone have other helpful responses to that second serving of soup that's calling my name?

I'm going to try taking a shower (I worked out just before lunch) and see whether I don't feel better.

Oolala, warmest welcome. Dr. Beck suggests choosing two diets, one plan to follow and one plan as a back up. It seems to me the No S Diet is a plan that has served you well. Good luck.

Hi, all. I'm just jumping in here rather than going to the intro page. I've been reluctant to do much here because I don't count calories nor track my food and I don't intend to. I've lost 25 lbs. over the last couple of years using the No S diet. However, I'm here because I used a lot of the other strategies from Beck to stick to that plan. I'm down to the last few pounds and trying to figure how to tweak things now. But mostly I'm here to support. We can all use reminders of all the great tools.

I'm thinking specifically now of the "NO Choice" card. A lot of our energy gets taken up in dickering over will I, won't I. It is usually just easier to say no, no, no, esp. when it's just a craving and not true hunger. We really are bigger than these momentary desires. I don't think I've ever been sorry for not giving in to false hunger. emoticon

Merrier, whatever decision you made yesterday it's behind you. Today you have the gift of a new day to plan ahead and make mindful choices. For me, the hardest part is making the choice to eat or not to eat unplanned food. Once the choice is made, as Sosi says with conviction, the pain of indecision is gone. For me, getting back on track ASAP without shame is key. The all or nothing attitude never served me. I try to get back on track at my next meal or snack and not play the I might as well go for it game.

Glad that i made you laugh with my cravings!
How about a nice bath with some lovely fragrances, to get your attention on something different?

Any how, we are here for each other, i will be up for another hour,so feel free to post and i will be there.

Thank you! Holy encouraging. You all could be therapists if you ever wanted to, really.
I've had several distractions, but to no avail, can you believe it? I think it's good old PMS doing its hormonal thing in my body or horrible withdrawal from having had sugar yesterday. I'm going to make it through, though. It's not as strong. I am feeling so sorry for myself, like an obsession I can't let go of. Yet, of course, I am not giving my body more sugar because I didn't write that down. Thankfully I don't have anything here to have (because I have a prepared environment for dieting). And I'm not letting myself out of the house to get anything. Thank you for the support. I've read every last comment, and Rachel, am delighted by your former PMS cravings! That made me so happy that it loosened my tight grip on this fierce sugar craving. What I used to do years ago was buy some really dark chocolate and when PMS came around, I would have a piece. Maybe I'll do that in the future. Even if I'm not conscious of PMS, I will always notice a period of time that sticking to a plan is harder, and that's PMS time. Oh well.

Merrier, it's impressive you've held out for so many hours. That takes some very tough determination. Do you have anything to distract yourself? Phone a friend, go out and get a pedicure or go shopping, tackle some task that needs concentration? Today I found that reading a couple of blogs from people who have been successful losing and maintaining was both distracting from the sweets littering my kitchen (guests! sweets put away now...) and inspiring. I also took another look at my response and advantage cards, which, after a few very tough days in row I now have on hand all day. It really does help me to look at them.

All the time you spent resisting temptation so far is making you even tougher for the next time a craving this intense comes along, so it will seem a little bit easier to resist next time. Hang in there!

I must say that back in the days when i had PMS, just before my periods, i would go for vermouth, smoked oysters and chocolate chips cookies.(what a combo, but always the same...)
As soon as i became menopausal, none of the above ever tempted me...
so there might be something to say for hormones.
But whatever you decide, i will helpyou stick with it, as much as i can

And you are right, Judi, maybe the thought of making the next day even harder might help us stay on track.
Your wise words are helping me tonight, Judi.

It probably is hormonal. But that does not mean you NEED to eat it.

Sometimes you can have something like fruit or a few raisins. Drink lots of water too.

I personally have trouble like this the day after sweets (like the cupcake you had yesterday) to the point where I don't even feel like it is such a treat. I feel like I am making the next day so hard!

Merrier, I do not know what you should do.
But wether you decide to throw it a bone, or just white knuckle it, you have to make the choice and stick to it.
Let us know what you decide i and i will be here to help you follow through with your decision.
Only you knows what would feel right.
Just do not make a binge out of a "bone"

P.S.I have my own struggle tonight, where i feel tempted to take it easy and "spoil" myself.
I should just look at the tire around my middle for a deterrent

Help! It's Saturday, so it means we're ready to use this for help. Here goes...
I have PMS and had a going-away party for a friend yesterday in which I had a *planned* cupcake and I did really great. I got all sweets out of my house, but have been craving sweets like nobody's business this afternoon. For about four hours now, I estimate. Maybe I'm trying to rationalize, but has anyone ever heard that there's a reason this happens with PMS, like I need the serotonin boost? This is many hours of a craving that is not subsiding. My brain is fantasizing about sweets really badly. I'm afraid that if I don't throw it a bone, so to speak, I'm really going to go too far and give up or just binge. What would you do?

Great! Everyone is getting plugged in.

Soon, we will switch over to posting here when we need HELP or to offer the help. Let's have a couple more days of hellos, and then when we see an email pointing us to the Help! thread, we will know someone is reaching out!

Hellos through Friday and start asking for help by Saturday...?

Sparkfully Yours, Judi

Love it!

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your
life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on,
rely on, or blame. The gift is yours -- it is an amazing
journey -- and you alone are responsible for the quality of
it. This is the day your life really begins."

New goals:
Eat Positively
Exercise daily (that one is already achieved)
Experiment with 3-5 meals a day
Avoid binge for at least 3 weeks.

Glad to see people getting hooked in so that when people post that they are in trouble, we'll all be around to "hear" them!

Hi Team,
I am making a new sticky topic where team members can go to post when they really need someone to help! Sometimes we are having a particularly tough evening. Or the weekend is not going as planned. If we post here, someone will give support!

(Thanks Rachel for the idea.)

So let's all write a quick hello on here so we can get subscribed to this thread so that people will always find someone to help when they really need it!
