I've used cognitive therapy for other things in the past. Reading a list of rational beliefs daily is fairly standard. It seemed hokey to me the first time I did it, but the effect it has for changing the way you think snowballs on you fast. Give it at least a month

DancingQueen, it's not a bad idea to start the book again. Take it a day at a time. I've also noticed that the Spark Diet stages somewhat resemble the Beck solution. It's just presented a little differently.

Keep posting, too. Each of here has had our own successes and challenges too. What works for one might work for someone else. What I find myself challenged with, others sail right through that. The joys of being an experiment of one!

Hang in there. Post here. It can help.

I use the cards occasionally. I like my list of reasons I'm doing this better. Sometimes the cards can provide a little external reminder and strength to help get through that tough moment.

The whole purpose is to modify behavior.what I did in the past did help me lose weight but not to keep it off.

I use the workbook too, so the pre done cads are handy. Good topic!

A great question, Cindi! I love the cards, but use other things, too. I have my "Reasons I Want to Lose" posted in several places: taped to my desk, on my bathroom mirror, emailed to myself daily, in my purse. I have different cards in prominent places around my desk. I put instructions about mindful eating on a sticky note and put it by my place at the table. I also tell people around me what I am doing and talk about it. I may drive some people a little crazy sometimes, but the ones who really love me are happy for me and are always ready to encourage me. I have several cheerleaders beside my DH/coach. I also have a quote by Aristotle on my monitor: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit."

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

You're right. And cards are one way to do it. It might be something else for someone else. What are all the ways you can surround yourself with inspiration and positive phrases?

Sometimes we need the activity of the cards to get us to make them part of the way we think. I don't think its so much that you read the cards daily, but that you are getting it into how you think and into your attitude. Basically you are memorizing the cards. Also, you are more likely to make the right choices later. I don't do cards as much, but I have my advantages or reasons in my mind and I mentally go through them periodically. I think its what works for you. But, to start people sometimes have to have them in front of them and daily remind themselves what they are doing and what is important. I do other things like put reminders on the refrigerator. Or I put them other places where I'll see them. If I read cards or anything else, its before I fall asleep at night.

Yes, I do find them helpful. My list is less than 10 items long though... I have them posted on the bathroom mirror so that I can review then in the a.m. while getting ready for work, and in the p.m. while getting ready for bed. In addition, I have them on my PC desktop to see every day when I log into and out of my work PC.

They seem a little hokey to me, too, but I'm throwing myself into the whole thing, even if I think it's goofy. After all, doing what I wanted hasn't gotten me where I want to be. I bought the workbook and in the back there were a bunch of the card already made. I've already actually used them several times, and they've been very helpful. I don't read through them all every day, I just find the ones I need when I need them. A couple of them I have in view most of the time: NO CHOICE and Do It Anyway. Those are things I need in my head all of the time. I also read my list of reasons to lose weight a couple of times a day. Hope this helps.

I was wondering if anyone sees major advantages from the cards? I am one of those people that think they sound a bit hokey and spending the time to write them out isn't bad, but spending the time every morning before work to read them just seems like too much time when I am already waking up early in order to sit down and eat mindfully.
Do you really think they are worthwhile?
