I just rediscovered my Beck books after a couple of years and are now reading my newly written Response cards twice daily and the weight is starting to come off. And pay attention to hunger levels and portion sizes, wow did I ever have a case of portion-distortion!

Glad to have you back! I'm also working on getting back on track.

I have a new calendar that is based on The Happiness Project. Today, the page is talking about sticking to your resolutions. I found it interesting because it is very much like what the Beck Diet Solution talks about. The steps are:
1. Be specific.
2. Write it down.
3. Review your resolution constantly.
4. Hold yourself accountable.
Doesn't that sound like advantages?

Back to Beck! Back to Sparkpeople!! I knew I'd gained a few pounds after vacation but I had no idea how many. I finally worked up the courage to step on the scale yesterday. Yikes! One of the things I got from Beck a few years ago was to get back up again after stumbling. Rather than waste the next five weeks waiting for New Year's to start Beck & Sparkpeople, I started yesterday. And I did well, staying within my calorie limit AND resisting pumpkin and apple pie after supper by telling myself two things: (1) I would regret eating the pie more than I would regret not eating it, and (2) I wanted my pants to fit more than I wanted the pie. Rather than look at what I want to lose as one big number, I've decided to take my journey one pound at a time with the help of Sparkpeople and Beck. Barbara

I hardly ever use the library, and that is really a mistake. They have such good resources, and we are already "paying" by paying our taxes. I have a friend who LOVES the library. She gets books and lots of movies too!

i am glad someone else has the book. Basically the author Julia Cameron is an artist and writer who discovered by accident taht her students were losing weight. when asking her students about taht it seemed taht since they were all doing their "art" they didn't have time to eat. And I understnad she is a recovering alcoholic. So she came up with this "program" to incorporate writing to help lose weight

Its based on Julia Cameron's Artist's Way. Its a program based on morning pages. You write 3 pages (large sheets of paper) of free flowing thoughts. They aren't to be read anyone or for any purpose other than they are only your thoughts. The idea is you are getting out all the stuff that is filling your mind. The writing diet is specific to diet with other activities including keeping a food journal. Check it out. If you are a writer or like to journal, its a great way to work on making changes.

I am almost through the first week but I have skipped over a few things, which I am not supposed to do. But I am keeping a list, so I will be accountable to doing them. The main thing I skipped was eating lunch at the table with no distractions. I have a lot of trouble fitting in my lunch for some reason. I did the breakfast at the table that day, but not the lunch.

WW is good. It just didn't work for me. Not enough one on one. That seems to work better.

Judi, yes we can do this. It's not easy. Going back to basics. Starting Day one of Beck today. This time it's going to work. I tried Beck a year ago July/August!! WOW how time flies. I got up to day 26. This time going for the gold!!! No going back only forward!

i found that joining a group like Weight Watchers or TOPS (take off pounds sensibly) was VERY HELPFUL -- weekly weigh ins, the support of tohe other members and the leader (WW) was all so helpful. I use my WW group and leader as my coach.

Good luck finding someone. I have heard people offering to coach one another over the years, so there might be that perfect person out there waiting for you!

And I do know how you feel about feeling restricted. It used to be, the minute I told myself I was going to go on a diet, I immediately became STARVING! I seem to have gotten over that knee-jerk bad reaction (thank goodness.) But it can be tough!

Thanks Judi! That does help. I've tried writing my food down here on spark and in my journal. Then I feel restricted. I don't know what comes over me. I just get that thought. Oh that would taste good. Once I give in it gets harder and harder to get back. I'm also finding, its not what I eat its why? Also working on hunger and full. I'll work on strengthening that resistance muscle. I need to find a coach. I can't do this alone. Yes, I can be accountable to myself. For me lately that's not enough. My want to is weak right now. I hate to pay money for one. Hoping to find someone on here.

Hi Debbie,
I have had the same experience in recent months. I agree that accountability is a big part. I know that I am seeing my live coach again, so I'm not straying as much.

But I also think there are those good old Beck thoughts that we need to keep remembering. I am trying really hard to remember that I am doing this for ME! So I should be glad to be accountable to myself because when I get off course, I am just hurting my own goals.

So, in getting Back to Beck, some of my favorite statements are:
Hunger is not an emergency.
If you build your resistance muscle it will get stronger.
Do it anyway (about lots of things I feel like skipping)
Oh well (about things that drive us nuts but there is nothing we can do about it)

and many more.

Also, a phrase that I came across a few years ago is still one that I like a lot:
Discipline is remembering what you want!

And this time around, I am also telling myself:
I remember that this got easier the longer I did it. I just need to LET it get EASIER again!

So, I hope this helps. I am glad you wrote. We need to help each other find that elusive thing called "success" - it dashes in and out of our reach!

it took me 2-1/2 years to quit smoking and 37 years to graduate from college. I kept starting and stopping both but i persisted and was successful at both. sometimes it takes some of us longer

Kelli, it helps me not to think of it as stopping and starting but it's all part of the process. All the mistakes I made I needed to make to get here today. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

How many times are you allowed to "restart" before you realize you're never going to finish? Frustrated with myself lately, can you tell?

Jumped right in again earlier this week.
Day 1: I've got my advantages list in my wallet and I read over it in my car before I come in to work. My big problem is usually the evening. I'm going to start trying to read my ARC and my planner in the car before I go in the house at night too.
Day 2: I'm going to clean off my desk and start up fitday again on my home computer. I don't have internet at home right now, so fitday seems like my best recording option to be consistent. I'm also working with a version of the No S diet.
Day 3: This is difficult. I did well Monday, until I got to my MIL to pick up DS in the evening and realized half way thru a cookie I was standing up. Spaced out about everything Beck related yesterday. Realized this morning as I was packing lunch that I was standing at the counter eating.
Day 4: Good job realizing I was standing eating, even if it was a little late.
Day 5: "Eat slowly and mindfully." Thinking about this today. Planning on doing it 'officially' starting tomorrow.
Day 6: Throwing this one in the mix early too. I'm using my "Restarting..." thread in the Introductions forum as my 'coach'. Anyone want to check in on me? Yes, I think a babysitter would be beneficial, but it's so hard to find someone willing to do it.
Day 7: "Arrange your environment". Taking a few days to do this too while I'm practicing on my mindful eating/sitting. Need to dig out tupperware containers good for lunch packing. Also need to build up my 'healthy food stash' for quick lunches, breakfasts, and my car stash to help avoid fast food.

I think that will give me enough to think about and work on for a few days. Looking ahead for future planning...Day 8 is "Create Time and Energy" looking at scheduling and priorities. I want to work on this Sat, Sun, and Monday, cause my weekends and my weekdays are SO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Day 9 is picking an exercise plan and Day 10 is set a realistic goal. I'll think about those this weekend and update later.

Welcome newcomers! My trip is over. My computer is *almost* back to normal. I keep needing to go back to the apple store for one more thing! I can't take much more of this!

Hi :) I'm new to the team too. Had great success when I used Beck a few years ago. Some life stuff happened and I put the weight back on and have tried all kinds of things since then to lose... but I have to go back to what worked the first time.

I definately have the motivation problem too!

Hi everyone. I am new to the team. I may have been on this team a couple of years ago. I am still trying to find "the thing" that works for me. I was looking through the teams yesterday and came across this. I had gotten rid of most of my "diet" books but for some reason had kept both of my Beck Solution books. So I dug them out last night and plan to start working on them. I haven't really had a chance yet to day but will in the next day or two. I had worked my way through about 12 days before when I bought the books.

My name is Faith and I work as a surgery scheduler. My husband and I live in a mountain community in near northern Los Angeles county. I have 3 grown children, 3 grandchildren. I am very active in my church. I have recently had a total knee replacement and am looking forward to getting the other knee done as well. I am still going to PT for that.

I ;am looking forward to getting back to Beck and see if I can get something happening on the weight loss scene for myself. I have alot of trouble with motivation. I have been here in Spark people land off and on for at least 5 years and can't see to stay on track. I can make some progress and then I sort of slip away and do my own thing.

Well I guess that is more introduction than you probably wanted. But here I am.

Hi :) I'm new, introduced myself but thought I'd add to this too. I'm going back to Beck, on day 2 and just writing in another color ink like someone else said, lol! I made a new set of advantages for my card this time. They are TOTALLY shallow, but I had to get honest with myself and and admit the REAL reasons I want to be thin again, ha! Maybe they will motivate me in ways that the others aren't right now.

For example, one 'stupid' reason is that we're moving into a more affluent neighborhood next month and I want to look good again and 'fit in', lol! I've been driving through there and the ladies are always out walking their dogs and washing cars and such and I totally want to play the part of the pretty housewife. Like I said, it's horribly shallow, but is more motivating right now than health reasons.

Re-wrote my advantages card, post them around and created new reminder systems. One way is making it one of my SP goals.

Hi Gwynnie, those are great ideas, and usually I would agree 100%.

Right now I am in the final phase of "not trying" and when I get back home I will go "whole hog" back to Beck. I think I will even go back to a meeting with my coach once or twice a week. I think it is almost a good thing that I am disgusted with all I have been eating. (But even as I say this, it is WAY less than I would have eaten on a trip four years ago before I ever started Beck.)

Well, tonight a steak dinner at a kosher restaurant in Miami Beach. Tomorrow afternoon I head to the airport to go home.

sorry Judi--did you go to the web sites of the restaurants you ate at to see about calorie content? did you ask? that usually helps. And one thing my husband and I have started doing is sharing -- like if i REALLY NEED THOSE FRENCH FRIES, we share a plate -- 1/2 the calories etc.

I had THREE restaurant meals today. UGH. Well, at least I refrained from the desserts. I am having a great trip. Tonight I said goodbye to my son and his girlfriend. I have to catch a taxi at 5:45 a.m. to go to the airport to visit my niece in Miami. I will be there Sunday and Monday, getting home Monday night. I get to meet my tiny little three month old great-nephew, so I am very excited.

But after this trip, I need to GET BACK TO BECK! I tried before the trip, and it did not catch on, so then I ate too much on the trip. Once I get back in the swing, I really am going to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I'll post this on the Daily Check-in too... Bye

Hi, My name is Barb.
I've had the book for a while and have even previously introduced myself on this forum.
Like many things, I've let both slip by the way side.

this year i guess thanksgiving is at my brother's house in Palo Alto, CA. Perhaps next year some time?? It's been a crazy yaer for us. If I had not had 2 deaths in 2 months, i may have been able to come down to Chicagoland over 4th of July or Memorial Day weekend.
