Also, check out The Spark. Chris Downie (Sparkguy) uses a lot of behavioral techniques in the book. I think it goes along with Beck very well. Also, much of what he talks about can be adapted for other areas of life.

FREELADY, I'm not surprised that you found all those ways to interpret Becks plan. I can see it working for just about anything you want to change. I will stick to working on one thing at a time, but hopefully I will get there!

I have used the tools taught in this book for many issues besides weight loss. I use cards to write notes of truth to myself, I use Beck's technique of self-observation and recording--- making use of it constantly for reality checks and making choices; I use Beck's conversation examples to talk myself through tough issues.

In my opinion the step-by-step, incremental approach in this book is so helpful. If I took a white-out pen and removed any reference to weight loss, or did it mentally, I still think it would be a marvelous road map for approaching any issue I'm facing.

I have applied the principles to reducing irritable responses to my family, courage to step forward and try a new experience, focus to attack some household tasks, just to name a few.

The non-condemning, understanding yet empowering approach has been very practical for me.

You are courageous to be moving forward on dealing with things you'd like to be different. Asking questions is a terrific step. You really can rise to these challenges. We are here to help and support you!

Yes, I know she deals with impatience and pessimism in the book related to weight loss. However, I'm looking for a book that is targeted toward these topics in general, and not geared toward weight loss.

Butterfly, Dr. Beck goes right at the impatient, pessimistic thoughts in this program. You like most all of us, want easy instant results, and she addresses those thoughts. An answer would be something like "I have tried quick fixes in the past and I'm still obese and have never gotten to my goals, so this time I'm going to read this book and do what Dr. Beck tells me to see that I finally get the results I want. There is no EASY way to do this, but just doing the work it requires."

Okay, I've told myself this. emoticon

I have the notebook and I've written at least 60 pages in it, copying from the book. I got the workbook from the library, too and I'm using it. I will have to get my OWN copy so I keep it permanently.

She tells you how to answer pessimistic thoughts, as well. I've realized that those thoughts are much like the PARENT/CHILD issues that I have read psychology books on. Our inner child says "Oh, I don't want to do this" and our inner Parent has to take charge and say "You will get up now and do it."

I never heard of Cognitive Therapy, or if I did I didn't see it as helping me. I have ADD and am very disorganized, so I am sure this would work for that issue.

There are a number of books out there. Check out books by Richard Carlson. He wrote the Don't Sweat the Small Stuff books. He has other books that might be the type of thing you are looking for. Two of his books that come to mind are: You Can Be Happy No Matter What and Feel Good Again. Do a search for his books on Amazon.com and you'll find those books and others listed.

I'd really like to work on my outlook. I tend to be a very impatient pessimistic person. I really want to change that so that I can be happier day to day. Know of any good books that tackle this specifically (that aren't religion based)?

I have been using Beck, Linda Spangle, EFT, and my faith in God to change my lifestyle to lose weight and get healthy and fit. I use multiple tools and techniques so I cannot give any one group of them credit for the successes. But for the first time in my life I have been breaking bad habits and starting new good habits--many of them. One big thing is the concept of NO CHOICE. I quite often do things I really do not want to do in order to keep my new good habit going.

Yeah, I had guessed it was used more widely. I hadn't heard of it before, but it seems well... like common sense after you read it, but beforehand, I just didn't think like that.

When I saw the title of this post, I thought to myself - Cindi is the right person to answer this!!! Hi Cindi, good to see you!

For me, I had heard of CBT before, and in particular as a way to attack depression.

Sparkfully Yours, Judi

Dear Spark Friends, I may not always write back about everything each person posts, but I am really interested in you! If you ever need me, send me a Spark Mail and I will always answer!

Actually, CBT is used in many areas to help people with many issues. Judith Beck just took the principles her father Aaron (the father of Cognitive therapy) developed and applied them to a specific problem. You can apply the principles to other areas of your life. Also, if you ever see a therapist they most likely are trained in cognitive behavioral therapy and will be using it with you. Judith made this more of a self-help program you can do on your own, so its very adaptable and easy to do.

Actually, I've listened to Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer and several other motivational speakers over the years and there are definite similarities. It really does boil down to learning how to control your thoughts. I also found it worked well in developing my parenting skills when my teenage son started acting up. Leads to a calmer life overall.

Just reading the beginning chapters of the book, I see the potential for so many uses for CBT. So, I'm wondering if you have implemented any of the principles in other areas of your life?

Of course I plan to finish the book first, but can see the principles helping me to finish the book I've only started five hundred times. Or getting organized, and so many more things.

Have you used it to help you in other areas?
