I'm sitting in my cube, my stupid brain is tracking 3 coversations going on around me AND trying to work on my own work. I'm distracted, antsy, a bit irritated trying to concentrate. I'LL GRAB SOME CHIPS....

Oh Wait - I'll put my earphones in! Music quiets the conflicting conversations and I have no more need to grab chips...

so, can someone explain why chips would have helped in the first place!?!?!?!?!? oy vay, the habits we use...

Great thread idea!

today, I had a strong craving for lots of sugary foods. I told myself: this is a craving! This is what I need to learn to overcome! I have to distract myself and I will feel so proud when I don't give in. I went to play with my daughter instead. And indeed, i did feel proud for not giving in!!!

Labeling it as a craving really helped and also reminding myself how proud I would be if I (finally) would be able to fight this craving!

Last night I had the urge to eat after dinner. Instead I thought about the energy I used exercising, recognized that my planning was off because I used too many of my calories for lunch, and that I wasn't hungry it was just a desire to eat and not an emergency, and instead brushed my teeth and somehow forgot about the urge.

Last night I really wanted a snack before bed. I thought about the fact that I had eaten more than I really wanted the day before and that I did not want a second day of that. So I got on the computer for a while and then I went to bed a bit early.

Great job seeing what your motive was regarding making the recipe, Freelady. It can be so hard to tell ourselves the truth about these things.

Our hotel room had a candy bar in it when we arrived. When I came back from dinner, I was thinking of tucking into it. I had decided that I would have a dessert tomorrow as part of my plan, so that stopped me. I'm reporting it now as part of diverting and I'm going to go down the the hotel gym now to get some steps in, since we drove for 8 1/2 hours today. emoticon

When I had the urge to make the ground beef casserole described in the featured recipe (and inclined to eat way too much of it), I thought, I can eat the lunch I have planned--I am just hungry because I've been putting it off. I also removed "featured recipe" from my "Today" column because I realized that for me just seeing the name of the food there is a powerful trigger! emoticon

I hear you. For me, it isn't always easy to ignore the desire/craving. Reminding myself constantly that it isn't an emergency until it becomes a strong habit is key.

Poeticlady, on reading your post, a terrible thought occurred to me: I could find a really light, portable stool to take with me places, so that I could always sit down to eat! Uh-oh! but, really, I hope you are proud that you used the thought about that habit and just kept walking.

Mazzyr, that was a great win. I really believe that learning to ignore the desire/craving to eat when not hungry is the absolute key and will trump all other mistakes in the long run.

Success one step at a time.

Yesterday, after breakfast I had the urge to continue eating. Instead I reminded myself that it was not hunger, it was just a desire and it's not an emergency. I CAN wait until my next meal to eat. Instead I made a note about it so I could post about it here, and lol it actually distracted me.

I was at Sam's Club, shopping, 2 days ago. So many FREE samples calling my name, sizzling on the Foreman Grills, in little cups with spoons, hot, cold, entrees and desserts, etc. Almost gave in, but....

I realized, I was NOT sitting down, I was pushing a shopping cart and standing! So passed up the free samples.......now if I had a chair, not sure I could have passed them up, but I did and that's all that matters!!! A first for me!

Sitting down to eat, anything, is something that has stuck in my mind, and it's working!

Today, I sent a friend of mine who had come for lunch off with a few Christmas cookies. I immediately after she left, I suddenly wanted to eat about 5 of them fast! However, I shifted my thoughts to how satisfied I felt and how I didn't want to feel uncomfortable again as I had on so many days this holiday season.

I called a handyman to have him come over and then I immediately did the dishes so he wouldn't have to see them. Urge gone and I made it to dinner without eating.

I had the urge to have another slice of key lime pie. Instead I thought of how many calories it had & instead I watched TV and went to sleep.

Oops! I got sidetracked. I meant to post this an hour ago

A thought that kept me from eating today was that I had felt so much better yesterday when I waited until I was hungry to eat. I really took the time to imagine the sensations I had walking aorund shopping and feeling good.

Right away, I went out in the yard and did some gardening. emoticon

Please share ONLY
1. thought that kept me from eating:
2. non-eating activity:

Please, this is not a thread of general recommendations. No one-liners, no histories, no all-encompassing rules.

It should be about a SPECIFIC MOMENT of success you have had today in thwarting the urge to eat in a particular moment. What thought did you use to turn the moment around and then what did you do right then instead of eating?

So, I suggest we have a simple format to share:

1. thought that kept me from eating: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
2. non-eating activity: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I'm also going to suggest this on a few other boards to see where it catches on--or not. I may be the only one this is useful for! I'll share my own in my next post. I know I'm sounding like a control freak on this, but I so need this specific kind of sharing. It is not helping me to hear, "Oh, when I get hungry, I just drink water/ I eat a piece of chocolate, I just get busy." I need to hear specifics about how what thoughts actually helped a person follow a plan in the moment, whatever it is, and Beck seems to be about specifics of thoughts and behaviors. Thank you for anyone who chooses to participate here. The next post will be an example.
