I now have to have aides come in each day to help me. Just imagine an old, over weight woman in a wheelchair who can't speak without her machine. What a sight.

I know what my responsibility to myself should be. Guess I have to include my helpers in my life on all levels. Trust is a big issue with my eating/bingeing anyway.

When I was in a Beck therapy group I didn't know what to do with all the writings I did. This was before computers were available so it was paper & pen. Now days I can lock the file & only I can have permission to view it.

Not sure I am making sense but a little more info about me & my life with Multiple Sclerosis.

Hi Kelly,
I'm glad to see you back here.

I am not completely sure I understand, but this is what I am gathering. You have someone helping you now, and you don't know her well enough yet to trust her with your important personal thoughts. So you try not to write in front of her. (That sounds reasonable.)

The idea of not wanting to eat in front of her worries me a little more. I think a lot of us try not to eat when other people are "watching" us. But I find that I do better when I eat in a way that I would not mind someone seeing.

Let me know if I am getting this, and add more to help me understand and I'll write back some more.
emoticon

And a little more ... I hope that time will help you get to trust her more. But it might be that you need this person for the physical help, but this person might not ever become close to you. You will have to see how things develop.

Hello coach Judi & everyone else!

Haven't been here to write anyway in a while. I have a new aide to help me during the week. I get the feeling I should not be writing while she is here. Guess I don't trust her yet. The writing is a necessary part for me. I have tried not eating while she is here but that is not the best for me.

How do I get over this feeling & get on with the best for me? I do hope this makes sense to you guys.

I dont think it is dorky at all. Mine are on my computer and my phone. I made flashcards at quizlet.com. I flip through them daily. you can even go to quizlet.com and search beck diet and see a bunch of flash cards. The other thing I do with my advantages deck is to play the "why" game. I take one advantage, read it and ask why is that important to me? I take the answer and ask the same question again, asking myself why each answer is important to me until I cant go any farther. That helps me stay motivated. I also read the daily motivators from the beck diet website and on the facebook page. Hope this helps.

Not dorky!

I made mine on index cards and used colored pencils to make them attractive. I keep the pack of cards in a little sleeve made out of index cards. I can look at them in any order.

Most of the time I don't look! But I am not doing great right now, so don't follow what I do! I think it would do me some good to read them more often again!!!

I've solved the following problem for the time being, but I'd love to hear how any of you have handled it so I know what to do next time: I was finding myself feeling bored with advantages response list. I'd read it so many times that I started to feel like a robot moving my eyes over every word as quickly as possible. I switched the order around a few times, and rewrote them, but the feeling still comes back every now and again. Now I've made my response list into a (warning: this is pretty dorky) number of different formats that include pictures, like a poster, a PowerPoint Presentation, and a word document. I find that the illustrating the list with photos kind of keeps it alive for me and makes it more like a work in progress. I also have them everywhere. I only have one up in my house because I have a long standing fear of being embarrassed by something revealing like this, but I keep password-protected versions on my work computer for those 3pm slumps, one on my home computer for reviewing every morning, on my phone, and on my email.

I'm really glad I did that challenge! I was so surprised at how much my eating is based on other cues, i.e. boredom or just knowing it's "lunch time". When dinner time rolled around I realized I hadn't been 'starving' all day. That was a great experiment, good job getting it done!

I have another question.

Today I am doing the assignment / experiment where Dr. Beck has you skip lunch for a day to have you experience discomfort. I'm so proud to say that I have gone quite a while without eating (I got a light breakfast at 8:30 this morning, and it's 4:30 p.m. now) and I've learned that hunger really isn't as bad as I had thought it was!

emoticon

I have a sensible dinner planned for tonight. Would there be any reason to try to "make up" those missing calories?

I use "treat" to describe a planned food that feels indulgent but is part of my normal daily "diet" (in the "what I generally eat" sense of the word diet)

I use "scheduled splurge to desribe a planned moderate overage of calories that is also part of my normal diet were week or two

I used "unplanned eating" "Impulse eating" or "binge eating" for anything else.

The food itself might be the same in all those cases-- there is no one kind of food that is "bad" or completely off limits for me; the difference for me is the circumstances and behavior around eating the food.

The vocabulary that I use when I talk, write, or think are important to me, and I select each word carefully, because I am aware that every word has its own shade of meaning. So I have a question. I usually use the word "treat" as a word to describe the group of foods such as cookies, candy, etc. (i.e. any high-calorie food that is usually avoided because they lack nutritional value). Is it important to use a different word other than "treat," when I say "I had some unplanned eating and ate a treat"? I mean, when I use the word "treat" in that context, it makes it sound as though I rewarded myself with food, and I know that is something to be avoided.

It seems to me that it is very important to use a different word other than "treat." But I'm wondering what other word people use to describe these foods that ordinarily wouldn't be eaten.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated! emoticon

Yay Judi!

I find I'm continually get back on track. It's just as much a part of my working on being healthy as all the other cognitive work we're doing. I'm getting back on track (again) today, in fact. I'm so glad that doing well at this doesn't require perfection. Just persistence and being willing to shrug off moments when I could have made a better choice, in favor of doing better the next time.

Here's to a great day for all of us! emoticon

You should be proud of yourself that you have come up with these valuable lessons. This is a long term proposition, and the more that you can learn about yourself and what will work for you, the better off you will be.

I recently got back to tracking and I am hoping to lose back the 10 pounds I gained over the last year. But I can say with certainty: if I had not internalized so many of the Beck ideas, I would have gained A LOT MORE!

Give yourself credit for how you reacted to this little setback!

Sunday and Monday went a bit off. I didnt rad my card yesterday and by the evening I was not prepared to reist food when I went out with my freinds. Also my yoga plans got dropped when I was waiting around for somebody- that isnt going to happen again.
Looking over what I could learn it is like this: I ahve a hard tie resisiting when I am with other people, especialy if I dont really want to be social. I tend to put others needs in front of my own priorites, thinking"I can get to that later" Today I am back on track. Read my cards, ate breakfast at the kitchen table, not in front of my laptop... this makes a big differnce

You've got a great point about friends. My friends are a little too supportive, if I mention I'm craving sugar they are more likely to say "Well go for it!" instead of what I need to hear (i.e "Is it in your plan? Read your advantages card!").

Im just getting to the part of the book about starting the diet and I just want to say how much it has helped me to plan my food the night before. Just as Beck indicates most of us feel, I was reluctant to take the time and do it. But it makes a huge difference in how I perceive food throughout the day. It takes the guesswork out of it. Ok, so it's been like 2 days but these two days have been much easier than before!

I do like to think that the team is my coach, and the site also. And even Dr. Oz's show, because I find it very encouraging. When I have a tough time, I put something on my status or blog or a little something on the discussion forum in the group. And I appreciate the support I've received here when I was terrified about weigh-in obsessing. I like using the team as my coach because the team knows the Beck program well. My friends tend to be very lax because they don't know the program, and my husband tends to be really strict about things. So I am very grateful this group is out here in SparkPeople land. emoticon and the Beck Team.

After yesterday I'm convinced I'm like you. It was day 2 of overdoing sweets, BIGTIME. I woke up today feeling sick because I had so much chocolate. Luckily it's gone now,so I'm going to avoid it altogether, see if that helps.

Hi Rose. The question of sweets ... every person has to decide their way to handle it. For some people, it is the right solution to have a little bit every day, because then it does not build up as something you have to have and then you binge on it.

But for me (and maybe you too) it is better to keep away completely. When I eat a little bit of sweets, I always just want more and more. When I have my brain set on NO SWEETS, it can be hard for a couple of days, but then it really is fine, and actually less of a burden because I don't agonize with a decision every time I see sweets.

Good for you for deciding to just avoid sweets. Over the past week I've been doing some here and there, and I think it's good to allow them in my diet now and then but yesterday I was sneaking them in left and right....and ended with a 4,000 calorie day. Needless to say this is more than I needed or wanted to eat yesterday. But it was like once I started I said screw it and let loose. I haven't done this for 2 weeks now and I woke up feeling sick and disappointed. Ugh. So I've logged most of today already, planning the healthy choices I know I NEED and keeping out the junk I don't.

Sometimes if you can do some really careful tracking, it will point out changes that you can make that might not be so bad. You just need to figure them out! I hope you feel better.

It's not easy... hmmm... are you keeping track of food? I know you do it on paper because you don't have access to the computer handy, so that's fine. Just see if you can figure out anything from looking at what you have been eating. Come over when you have more thoughts...

Heidi, I have started all the "right" things again recently, tracking, staying in range, exercising, and I am not losing pounds as fast as I would like. I had popped back up to 190 before I said "NO MORE" and now I am at 186 after more than a month. But the truth is, I feel much better already. I feel like my face looks more like "myself" and I don't have that feeling of being mad at myself for going off track and eating enough to make me feel sick.

For the moment, that is going to have to be my reward! It is quite a valuable reward!

(And if I choose to put on the steam and be even stricter, I will probably lose more, but that is a trade-off that I am not willing to make right now. I'm in this for the long haul.)

I know that you know all this! You are someone I watch to find this kind of wisdom!

Sparkfully Yours, Judi

okay, I KNOW all the right responses here but I am still FEELING very frustrated that after one week of tracking I only dropped 1.5 pounds and after a second week of tracking with even stricter calorie range I stayed exactly the same. NOT FAIR!

I did okay on Thanksgiving. We brought home food and ate it for the next day or so. Now, we are back on our usual food.

I did OK considering we were out. I have to still track it in. I hope I didn't overdo it too much!

I avoided the sweets today. I had a little moment of truth. I thought, maybe I'll just taste the dessert. (There were four that all looked good.) But I decided ahead of time that I am not ready for this. I recently got back off sweets, and it was too hard to get to this point for me to jeopardize it. I predicted that if I had a little bit of these desserts, I would be looking for sweets for the next several days and maybe going back onto them! So, yay for me! (I did eat plenty of other stuff, but I did not go overboard.)
