Have dropped back into sparkpeople, at least through end of 2014. Anyone going to Ohio Les Fest in a couple of weekends, near Columbus? I'm thinking about it though its a drive from Michigan

Hi all. I am new to SP and I just joined this group. Let me first say how impressed and inspired I am by your tickers. It is so inspiring to see people who are losing weight (something I so desperately want to do). I am 218 pounds and am only 5 ft 3. I really need to get down to 160 or even 150 to be whee I want to be. I have 4 children (all adopted) and have been a foster mom for many children over the years but at the moment only have one foster child ( a teenage girl who is a delight). So much of my identity is wrapped up in work and being a mom that I I have neglected myself. About a year ago I tried a few dating sites like Pink Cupid etc but I really felt like my size was holding me back. I can manage to take some cleverly angled face shots that actually make me look cute but I was worried about actually meeting any of the ladies I was chatting with -- just terrified that I would be "too big" for them. So I have given up on the dating scene altogether (for now at least) and want to lose weight, feel good and get some self esteem back! I hope you are all well and I look forward to getting to know you.

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. Confucius

Chole - so GOOD to "see" you again! But what a total drag. Using vacation time to cough up a lung isn't cool. Must be so stressful, hope it didn't screw up your semester.

Looks like a gf I have now! But I'll still drop by here or maybe just switch to the Planet.

Hope you are better 9-1-1 - you deserve a break.

Hi, Cat.
I am back to work for the first time in a week and only because I am out of vacation time. I came down with a severe case of bronchitis and a sinus infection. Basically, I feel miserable. Got an antibiotic shot, on oral antibiotics, finished the steroids yesterday to reduce the inflammation in sinus' and lungs, and I am taking a prescription cough medicine/antihistamine that makes me sleepy to keep my lungs inside my body.
Cross fingers this goes away soon. It has ruined all my vacation plans since I have no vacation time to take later this summer. :-(

Hope all is well with you and Gail.

Sounds like a good weekend Chole - what you needed.

I had a date last weekend which went well, am also e-mailing daily with another woman who might be more my style. We haven't met yet though. My foot problem has disappeared - thank goodness - and I was able to set off my Activity Tracker twice this week. Had been a month since I'd been able to do a serious walk.

Most exciting thing is I bought a ukulele at our Folklife festival last weekend. Very fun, lots of YouTube tutorials and it's a pretty easy instrument. I also picked up a flyer for our Renaissance Faire coming up. I admired the reps for wearing their heavy velvet layers on a hot day!

Hope everyone's week is going well. I'm going to lunch with my younger son and plan to make healthy food choices. It will be good to catch up with him.

Cheers,
Cat

Hello and welcome, Rabbit.

How has your holiday weekend been going, ladies? Mine has been uneventful. We have had much needed rain since Friday. Mostly thunderstorms in the evening and into the nights. I have awakened each morning to falling rain that has lulled me back to sleep...much needed sleep. In between I have been doing my usual homework. No weekend rides for me due to the weather. We are currently under a tornado watch. Lol

Hey kids!

How's your week going?

May sound funny but I had a fun dentist appt with Joe this afternoon. We went in together and hung out afterwards with a few of his friends for lunch. I need a crown (expected) and he is up for 3 small fillings. I am AGAIN so thankful that I'm supplied with dental insurance that covers me and the kids until age 26 (thank you Obamacare). The crown costs over a grand and I pay only $167 co-pay. I mean really, how could it be $1000 for those with no dental coverage. Shameful.

Anyway, looking forward to a long overdue chat tonight with Karla my first gf who lives in Laramie WY. We were together for 5 years, the last 4 she moved to Seattle and we lived together. Wasn't meant to last - she had other plan,s but we've stayed close especially because of the boys.

Didn't do too well with food today - skipped breakfast and very minimal lunch. Worked fitness in by walking about half an hour mostly uphill to the dentist. Feeling kind of woozy now, really time for a good dinner.

I'll get back to the planet soon - that is an interesting discussion.

Ciao for now,
Cat

Have not had the chance to read it yet, Gail. You know my schedule. LOL I do have it open on a tab in my browser, though, so I can read it when I get the chance.

One of the things that sends me down paths of thought:
Energy never disappears it just changes into other forms. So, what happens to the energy of our bodies that animates us, runs our bodily functions, thought processes? We know that our bodies utilize electrical impulses to function. So, what happens to it when our bodies die? Where does it go?

LOL, Chole! Did you read it? I really liked it. I gotta admit, that is more my 'view' of 'hell' than anything else. It seems the older I get, the more religious teachings from my childhood I toss right out the proverbial window. What I believe today is so far from what I was taught to believe then....I consider that to be a good thing, tho. Stepping out of the box is always a good thing, there are a helluva lotta 'boxes' in this life and this culture.

I am, however, still divided on the reincarnation thing. LOL A part of me really WANTS to believe that yes, we do have a chance to get things right **the next time**. That thought is really appealing to me, so I don't know if my half-belief is due mostly to that, (as in the part of me that really and truly wants to believe it so badly causing me to give the idea legitimacy in my own brain), or if it really is a spiritual fact, ya know? I seriously am hoping that there really is something to it. hahahahahahaha I 100% agree with you, tho, as far as each of us having our own path that we need to follow. The longer I am alive, the more non-judgemental I find myself becoming re: other peoples' paths.....it seems I am going from an overly opinionated old bat to becoming someone who now questions myself every time something comes along that I find myself judging at all, to see just why I react to it the way I do. I believe that all of the things that we judge within ourselves, either harshly or leniently, are more due to our own patterns of thinking than anything else.....and our own patterns of thinking are merely that, **our own patterns of thinking**.....caused by our own ingrained thoughts that were drummed into us via other means or acquired from our own experiences, which means that they are no more 'fact' than the man in the moon....only our own 'stuff', ya know? And we all have a lotta 'stuff' rambling around in these heads of ours. LMAO

But yes, I also agree as far as learning to continue to grow and to be open to all possibilities. It has finally sunk into my brain that basically, we do not have a vast amount of control over most anything in our lives, even tho we are allowed that illusion. I believe that a lot of the experiences we end up having in this life are actually orchestrated by the universe, to teach us whatever we are supposed to learn, and that whatever people and experiences are supposed to come into our lives will do just that. We are all such **control freaks** in this life....LOL We try to force this, or to force that, and then we sit around and wonder why so many of our experiences turn out badly, when if we had just been still, concentrated on living our lives each day, working on just bettering ourselves (and our thinking) and life for those around us, and leaving the fine tuning to the universe, then things would just unfold naturally in the way they are supposed to. I did not realize, until this stage of life, just how hard it is to do just that! I did not realize, until lately, just what a control freak I am myself! LOL

Guess that makes me human, huh? :)

I'm gonna send you an email, Chole. I subscribed to the Hay House emails that tell you about new books, articles, seminars, etc. and I got one today about a book that I sent off for. It sounds awesome. I have never seen it, but it spoke of a documentary titled "What the bleep do we know?" that investigated the possibilities of healing via our thoughts, etc. I would like to find that docu, gonna check Amazon and see if it's available on DVD, maybe. Anyway, one of the docs who did the docu has also written a couple of books that I wanna check out. His last one was called "Breaking the habit of being yourself" and how you can change your old patterns of thought, etc. to improve yourself. His new one is titled "You are the placebo", it won't be out until the end of this month but it can be pre-ordered via Hay House. I sent off for his prior one and am planning on also sending off for the new one whenever it comes out, I didn't pre-order it.

People think I am just nuts but I am really leaning toward giving this line of thought some real legitimacy.....I mean, who knows? It's something else to explore, and I've always kind of thought, within myself, that there just might be a whole lot more to it than what we fathom. I dunno....but regardless, I absolutely LOVE exploring these trains of thought. LOL

Then again, maybe I'm just nuts. LMAO

I, too, have insurance through work and use an FSA to cover the deductible. It's great you are able to cover your sons for so long, Catt.

We all have our own journey to make and path to follow. I believe that people come into our lives when we need them. I think the important part of the journey is that we learn, continue to grow, and to be open to the opportunities that present themselves along the way. What we don't get "right" this time we have the chance to work on next time.

Anyway, I need to go read that article. You well know how this kind of stuff interests me. LOL

I didn't even think of that until about two seconds after I'd posted my question....duh. I imagine you both have health insurance where you work. Which is only a good thing! That is awesome that you're able to provide coverage to your sons, Cat, that is a huge plus. I've just been hearing some horror stories from people around here about the ACA and what it has done to their coverage and it is hard to separate the hype from reality, I was just curious to know peoples' real-time experiences with it all. One person told me that her deductible jumped to something like $12,000/month, which I have just NEVER heard of, ever....I mean, is that even possible??? $12,000/year I guess I could understand, but some of the horror stories I have heard do not even seem in the realm of possibility/reality, ya know? But I also have to admit that I have not 'researched' it much at all, so I suffer from a vast ignorance regarding the reality of it, anyway. I was just curious, would be interesting to hear from people who actually signed up for it and could give firsthand accounts of how it all went and if they were happy/unhappy with it all. So far, the ones who have told me how unhappy they are were already self-proclaimed Obama-haters, and with some of the stories I've heard so far, I have to really question the veracity of the stories, ya know?

You'll have to let us know how the digestive enzymes work out, and the water is always good. Enjoy your outing with Nadine, that is great that you two are able to remain friends, not many people can achieve that. But really, what do you ever gain by being enemies, ya know? It's just more negative energy and who needs more of that? While my ex hubby and I have not remained what you would call 'friends', by the same token, I actually have been on outings with his wife here and there and we have managed to always maintain an amicable presence for the sake of our kids and their kids. Nobody wins when you let personal stuff get in the way of things, really, and after having children with someone, you are tied for life whether you particularly want to be or not, so it's always best to keep a friendly demeanor toward each other, I think. There are times I'd like to box his ears and his wife's, I gotta admit, but ya just gotta know when to stifle yourself. LOL I am relatively certain they feel the same way about me! hahahaha Then again, probably a LOT of people feel that way about me....LMAO I've had more than my share of flubs with people along this route, I'll never be the easiest person to like, I guess. I yam what I yam and I've no doubt sprinkled more than a bit of negative energy of my own around the planet. :)

As for my partner, Bon....well, it seems we will always be in that category of on again/off again, on again/off again, etc. After being together for going on 26 years and having all assets jointly, we fell into that **safe and comfortable** pattern of 'family vs partners' and even when I moved out, we remained closely in touch and met up regularly and continued to help each other with everything. She will be 70 this year. In my early 50s, I went thru a really deadly and angsty period of life, where I realized just how deficient my life had been and took a major nosedive, as Chole well knows. It was an absolute nightmare. Took me quite awhile to grow up and finally come out of that. I went thru a period of time where I tried to recapture what felt like a bit of my 'youth' and try to start over, I somehow got it into my head that there was more to life and that I had missed the proverbial boat, and I stepped out to try to recapture my own dreams, which were totally flawed from the get-go, I just wasn't smart enough to realize it, then. Funny how unhappiness can totally color your thinking and everything about your life and mentality. But then when you feed that unhappiness, what else can happen, ya know? At some point you have to pull up your big gurl panties and accept that your life is a result of your own choices and let it all go and just go on. It's hardest of all to forgive yourself, really, when you finally realize that YOU are the one who screwed up your own life and you really can't hang that burden on anyone else. LOL

So Bon and I will probably always be 'together', in some capacity, and I have accepted that. There is nothing else in my future but to live the life that I have and finish things out the best way I know how and try to leave something behind for my children. And that is where I am at, now, at 60. I tried (briefly) the dating scene, enough to finally realize that I was not very good at it and that there was actually a big part of me that did not even have the emotional energy to really invest in starting over, or being with someone new. The few people I investigated the possibilities with, all I did was end up finding fault, maybe even where no fault really existed, ya know? (Like I am any 'prize'....notttttt.....I am not trying to come across as tho I even remotely think that I am, because trust me, I know better than that...) And I really did a disservice to both them and myself by getting out there and trying. Instead of making a rabid bid to 'grab that ring' from my own desperation, I (and they) would have been much better served if I had merely just withdrawn, shut up, and taken the time to actually try to know myself before I tried to advance in any direction whatsoever. To my discredit, I did not do that. It was a hefty learning lesson.

This life is such a funny, funny thing, isn't it? Wonder why it is that you don't really learn your lessons until AFTER you have wreaked so much damage? I suppose there is a reason in there somewhere.....

I just read the best article on yahoo, it was titled something like 'what Christians get wrong about hell', or something like that. Was a really thought-provoking read. Spoke of how 'hell', as it is described in the Christian bible, is not really an accurate portrayal, that agony and torture do not come from without, but from within. And 'hell', per se, is not a ***fiery furnace*** where you are tortured eternally by evil demons, but the agony of being separated from perfect love, and that when a soul who refuses to be, or to accept, love is met with perfect love, that love then becomes agony for that soul. I have to think there is something to that, really......lemme see if I can post the link here....

TGIF team!

I'm fortunate that I have healthcare through my job. The deductible is a bit high but I save for that with a flexible spending plan throughout the year so it's not such a shock to the budget. There are copays as well but overall it's a great plan. I'm still able to cover both my sons until they are 26 now for both medical and dental.

I started taking digestive enzymes last week. It was suggested to me as a way to metabolize more nutrients from food, and to help kickstart my digestive system which is way too pokey. More fun and aging!! Drinking LOTS of water now too which helps lots of things.

Having dinner tonight with my ex Nadine. Haven't seen her in a few months so will be good to catch up. We broke up probably back in 2009 and after a couple years we started hanging out as friends. I wouldn't get back into a relationship with her but it's pleasant sharing a friendship.

Hope you all have an OK week and perhaps you were able to get some rest in Chole. Have a healthy weekend!

Cat

I didn't know those laws were intrusive, Chole. ?? I'd like to know more about that. I just know everything was closed on Sundays when I was growing up and Sundays were pretty much 'family days', I think that is what I miss, really. But I have no clue what else those laws encapsulated, I'd be interested to know more about that. I am sorry your store was closed when you wanted to get your yogurt! You are right, re: the fasting blood sugars, that is a bit high from the norm. Hopefully the changes you are making will make a difference. Exercise is also a big key to lowering blood sugars but when the hell do you have time, ya know? I'm sorry you don't like your class, hopefully this six weeks will pass really quickly! And you are definitely right about the 'flush' from the niacin!

Also hope you can manage to get that cholesterol lowered, Cat. It's a struggle, isn't it? Definitely right re: results not showing up immediately. I'm glad your son wasn't hurt, but I agree that he is probably wise to see a chiro to make sure all is well and to have any adjustments he might need as a result of it all. Hopefully he will get his car issues worked out, it's practically impossible to do without a vehicle this day and age and they're so damned expensive to maintain, but whaddya do? Especially if you have to job hunt or commute to even get to a job....not having a dependable one can be a huge handicap if you don't live close to city transit or something.

I just got my car out of the shop, it's been sitting in the drive since last September. New springs, new struts, new ball joints....and of course, as a result of all that going out, all 4 tires needed replaced and an alignment done. Uuuuuuuuugh. Grand total of $1600. I think I have officially paid more in repairs now than what I paid for the whole car to begin with. On the up side, the mechanic told me that he checked things out and that he didn't see anything that would be any problem in the near future. Then again, I have heard that before, too, so we'll see. I do know that it needs a new compressor, the mechanic who replaced the radiator last year just unplugged it back then so there is no air, which is not a big deal to me, at least right now. But that will be another $800 fix if I decide to have it done. Geeeeeeeez

Have either of you signed up for insurance under the ACA yet? If so, would be interested to hear what your experience was with that.....

Always good to be vigilant in all these things as we get older. Patience is a big part as making changes doesn't always show results quickly.

Actually, no, I am not diagnosed as pre-diabetic yet. My A1C (three month average of percentage glucose) was 5.8%. This is in the normal range for non-diabetics but is getting a little high according to my doctor's "concern" scale (which is at 6%). Diabetes does run in my family so I don't want to get there. I am trying to be pro-active and find out what foods trigger the glycemic reactions in my body so I know what foods I really need to curb and watch. The weird part is that for non-diabetics your fasting glucose level should be somewhere between 65 - 100 mg/dL and mine has only been below 100 once and that was in the middle of the afternoon! My fasting blood sugar has never been below 100 the last few weeks.

Oh, word on the niacin (I had to take it for years for the Meniere's disease)....get the kind that doesn't cause the "flush" or you could spend a good 30 min to an hour pretty uncomfortable. When I was taking it we had to start with small dose and break the pill up and build up to a whole pill (I was 12) due to the vasodilation. They didn't have the non-flush type back then. LOL

Glad to hear your son is good. Seeing a chiro is probably a good idea just to get checked and adjusted after that kind of impact.

Also good that you aren't in the danger zone for heart disease. It's a good idea to stabilize or lower that cholesterol though. The HDL/LDL ratio being good lowers that danger. It is one of the reasons I am working on removing some LDL with the vegetable fiber. My ratio wasn't so good even though my overall numbers were fairly good.

6 weeks will go by in no time!!! I guess you’ve got no alternative except to hang in there and think “This too shall pass” 

My cholesterol was 247 although the “good” cholesterol level was very good. This was a new fangled blood test where you don’t need to fast ahead of time. I received a note from my MD this morning saying “despite the "high" total cholesterol you are calculated to be at low risk for developing heart disease in the next 5-10 years” and that I’ve remained stable since 2006. I’m not sure that is comforting. I’ll work at it (thanks for the fiber tip) and then take another test of the fasting variety in 3 or 4 months.

So are you diagnosed as pre-diabetic? Keeping track of the glucose has to be a challenge. Logging seems to be the only way to get a handle on any of these things. Would be nice to get more insight from your MD.

I spoke with Sam last night and he says only his car was damaged but he is planning to see a chiropractor. He’s young, fit and strong so hopefully the headrest was enough to keep his neck from being injured. His biggest concern is that his 1 year contract with Starbucks ends tomorrow and he needs the vehicle for job search but it needs some work. Silver lining thing is that the exhaust needed to be replaced anyway so maybe the other guys insurance will pay for that.

I never thought of stores being closed as “blue laws”, just a result of our super catholic neighborhood. It was just the way it always was so it wasn’t really an inconvenience. But then I was little and mom and dad did all the shopping lol!

So you’re back to work and school to rest from your busy weekend hahah!! Take care,
Cat

My current mantra....6 weeks until the freaking marketing class is over. I don't like it any more than I did before.

Cat, good deal with the weight and the physical. My cholesterol was 201 so it needs some work too but it was my HDL/LDL ratio that is really out of whack. I am currently using the equate brand of sugar free soluble fiber two or three times a day. Fiber is supposed to attach to the LDL and help remove it. Figured I would help it along in an "easy" way. It is tasteless and fully dissolves so no biggie. Still working on my glucose. I have no seen it above 168 but it has only been down below 100 once. Even my fasting glucose is always above 100. This morning it was 148. I am confounded. So, time for the journal with the foods and try and figure out what spikes it and what has less of a glycemic impact. I know that oranges bring it up (about an hour and a half after eating a SMALL orange is when I had the 168). Doc has not said anything but just trying to stay on top of it and see what my blood sugar says I should be eating since I don't want to tip into diabetic range.

Not much going on. Dead from the weekend. Mom had one of her "I need to see you now" episodes. Nothing wrong, she just "needed" to see me. It was a good weekend to go since it was a long weekend and I had friends I had not seen in a long time that were heading to the renaissance fair. I got to see them, mom and dad, and my ex-brother in law. Now, back to the grindstone and catch up on homework.....

Sorry to hear about your son's car, Cat. I hope he is alright. How is he doing now? Sometimes the soreness doesn't show up for a while.

Gail, good to "see" and hear from you! I will send you the invite to the other group. It isn't active right now. Shell is busy and Cat and I just chatted here.

Hope the two of you had a good weekend. As for the "blue laws"...Many of them were intrusive, IMO. AND, last night when I got back to town I needed to stop by Market Street (or United Supermarket) and get some Greek yogurt for my breakfast this morning.....They were closed. So not a happy camper! No regular breakfast...a cheese stick and grapefruit (guess we get to see what that does to my blood sugar!). I like my Liberte' yogurt in the morning! LOL (can you imagine my pouty face?)

Happy (belated) Easter from me, too. The day kinda got away from me, since I kinda slept it away, being a third shifter. LOL

There are a lot of things you can do to lower that cholesterol, Cat. I read awhile ago that niacin (which you can buy OTC at any drugstore or supplement aisle at Walmart/Kroger) is supposed to be good at lowering cholesterol levels. I'm sure you'll find all kinds of things that will help without resorting to the cholesterol lowering meds. How did you injure your foot? I'm glad it's doing better, I still need to read back in these threads. I haven't cruised thru sparks since I left it all that time ago. I am sorry to hear about your son's car but I hope you two can get together sometime this week and I hope he doesn't have any hassle getting his car repaired. Did he suffer any trauma from being rear ended? I agree re: the 'old days'.....I truly miss the old 'blue laws' that dictated that stores be closed on Sundays, etc. With this computer age now, it's so easy to hole up in the house and not have any real contact with anyone, anymore. Used to be we got out and knew our neighbors and weren't joined at the hip with a phone. I do miss those days. I know it's 'progress' in a lot of ways, but emotionally, it does not feel like progress....it feels like it's taken away from our ties with everyone, to a big extent. Guess we all have to work harder this day and age to maintain that contact.

Whassup, Chole?

Happy Easter!

Good to see you back Gail. lol - I hear you about babies - I'm 57 and changed my last diaper so long ago I can't remember but wouldn't mind doing it again for a grandbaby. I don't see it happening anytime soon though. What a sweet thing. Your daughter is lucky to have you there to help out. Enjoy! Chole, hope school went well this week - good luck with the marketing class.

I had a physical last week. My doctor gave me big thumbs up for weight loss and decrease in blood pressure but turns out my cholesterol level is pretty high. I really don't want to start on medication for it so am researching other ways to address it. It's always something. At least my foot injury is doing better - I walked quite a distance with my son yesterday and it's feeling pretty good today. I weighed in the morning and the scale has stayed level even though cardio the past 2 weeks was pretty much non-existent. Glad for that.

I'm home alone today - had a meal with my younger son yesterday, he's working today, and the other older one was scheduled to come over today but got rear ened in his car on the way to work yesterday and his car needs work. He moved out to Kirkland across Lake Washington about a month ago so it's more difficult to get together now. Hopefully we'll be able to see each other this week.

What happened to the days when people got Sundays off from work and Easter was a time when all the stores closed and everyone spent it with family? Doesn't seem that long ago. Maybe it's still more that way back in the midwest? Times sure have changed.

Oh well, like they say, you can't go back.

Take care,
Cat

Hey, girls, just swinging thru to say hey, not gonna take the time tonight to read back thru but I promise I'll do that later. (This is Gail, btw....Couldn't get my old screen name back, of course, since I signed off completely.) (sigh) Whatever.....lol Hope everyone is well, my days of living with my daughter for the majority of the week are over now, but I still go up two nights a week just so she can get at least a couple nights of shut-eye. I'll probably be doing this until the baby is better about sleeping thru the night. My new grandson was born Mar. 4 and is doing really, really well. Growing like a little weed and is doing the same thing my own son did, having a fussy spell for several hours each evening, uuuuuuuuggggghhhh. Gawd, I remember those days, hadn't planned on repeating them at the ripe ol' age of 60, but it's okay 'cause I can hand this one back to his mom. LOL I read that they usually outgrow this by 3 or 4 months, I am hoping it will be sooner, since he is only six weeks old right now and my daughter has to go back to work the first week of May. Anyhoooo, I'll shaddup now, and have a good week, everyone.....

I usually do wear a costume of some sort. I am hoping to find all my fair garb one of these days. I seems to be on walkabout! I ended up buying enough to get me through a day at fair when I went to Sherwood Forrest Fair over spring break. I did end up buying a new belt pouch. One of the shop owners fixed my other pouch for me (it had lost a button and wouldn't stay closed...by button, the original was a horn button that leather looped around to keep the flap down, I bought a steel button with the tree of life on it to replace the missing one). I bought a belt pouch from her shop (more expensive than I intended on buying but....it should last forever if I don't lose it or it doesn't go on walkabout to try and find the rest of my stuff!).

I bought a glucometer the other day. I started monitoring my blood sugar yesterday. I have to journal what I eat and my blood sugar and find out what is making it stay a little high...not diabetes high but not good either. Fasting blood sugar should be below 100 from what my paperwork from the doctor says. Mine was almost 120 yesterday morning and it was 140 this morning. I need to do more research. The A1C level is an average over three months and is measured a little differently. Mine is 5.8% and should be under 6% so that method is getting high as well. It is time to get ahead of this and find out my "triggers" and modify my eating habits. For the time being I am suspending the "lose weight" focus and switching to a "blood sugar triggers" focus. I also got some soluble fiber to start taking (sugar free and vegetarian...not that I'm vegetarian, lol). Fiber attaches to LDL cholesterol to help remove it from the system. I am hoping this will help in lowering the LDL and bringing my HDL/LDL ratio more in line with what it is supposed to be.

Woohoo on keeping up with the restricted sugar.
Ellen but no Ellen, huh? Sounds like fun.
I understand the "when the heck did I do that!?!" feeling. I have bruises and sore spots I have no clue how I got them.

Okay, now for the b!tching....LOL (feel free to skip the rant)
I HATE MARKETING! My current class is marketing. I have NEVER liked marketing. AND, it has another team assignment that has crap due EVERY week. There is the text book to read and, so far, a MINIMUM of six (6!) journal articles assigned. AND we have two papers that have to be written. One due this week. I HATE THIS CLASS and I just started the second week.

(okay, b!tching over...for now)

Have a great weekend.

lol - I hear you! I was wondering where the weekend went - passed by so fast.

Sounds like a really fun time at the fair. Wow, 5 miles, that's a goodly amount of walking. Do you wear a costume?

So are cholesterol and AIC reflective of each other? If one goes down does the other? I don't know much about blood sugar. Haven't had to pay attention to that so far. I know it takes alot of vigilance to keep it in check - best of luck with that. We can only ignore our genetics and bodies for so long. I have a physical coming up and will have the cholesterol level checked, thanks for the reminder, it's been years and I know it was high the last time. Hopefully the weight loss and exercise will have brought it down.

Sugar avoidance still holding. Attended a catered lunch at work today for a department meeting with the dean. I avoided all the sweets and had a bunch of the yummy green salad with little dressing and a modest serving of the Asian noodle salad. I did something to my foot yesterday that feels almost like a sprain. Seemed like a wise decision to postpone my Monday trip to the gym until tomorrow. Hopefully it will be OK in the morning. Sad thing is as I get older I sometimes don't even know how I hurt myself ;-p

The Ellen DeGeneres show was filming on campus today out by the big fountain. I couldn't go but here she was "visiting" our beautiful campus via her studio so I'm sure some were disappointed that they didn't get to see her in person. Very cool anyway.

Ciao - have a great Tuesday!
Cat

Hi, Cat.

Glad to hear you had such a good day with Joe. Sounds fun.

Ended up walking over 5 miles on Saturday through the Faire so that is a good thing. Didn't catch up with Kandice and the kids until outside the gate at closing. She was feeling bad but had "soldiered" though the day due to the kids and friends with her. Yesterday she was down for the count. She couldn't even keep any meds down. I told her to let me know if she needed me for anything (I was on my way home and could have changed my route to go help her out). She said she would get through so I came on home. I will text her in an hour or so to see how she is doing. If she is in bed she will be up and getting ready to go get the youngest by then.

I friend Bob and his wife and their 6 month old son met me at fair. Bob and Rheena were not married (hadn't even met) last time I saw Bob. We worked together at TI and we hadn't seen one another for probably 12 years or so. He's my age. I told him he was nuts when he told me about Robert Roy (the baby). LOL The recently moved back to Tx. He had been in PA for a while. The company he was working for lost it's funding and they decided to come to Tx. He had kept the house he had bought all those years ago so they had a place to move in to.

After fair I took them to a family owned Italian restaurant I know and love. They enjoyed the day and the food so I count it as a success!

I need to go get a glucose monitor and work on my HDL/LDL ratio. My cholesterol ratio is not where it needs to be and that make you more susceptible to heart disease. It runs in the family on dads side so I need to do what I can to turn that around. Also, my A1C was at 5.8%. Web says it needs to be below 7% but the paperwork from my doc says 6% so I need to find out what raises my blood sugar and modify my diet accordingly.

Also, exercise helps both cholesterol and glucose so....I need to get moving.

Can I buy a few more hours for the day, please?

Have a good one!

Greetings!

Hope a good time was had by all at the Faire!

Highlight of my weekend was spending the day with Joe. I checked out his new apartment, lugged a bunch of kitchen stuff from my attic on the bus. It's a typical kind o grungy student apartment near campus, smelled a little too much like cat pee even though the carpets had been cleaned. I hope he can be firm with he landlord on getting the carpet replaced.
Anyway, we took a long walk through the University district and ended up having lunch at a Japanese Udon shop. Super yummy.

So far, I'm doing great with the re-institution of the no sugar routine. The first couple days are hell but then it gets much easier. I dropped a couple pounds this week and feel better already - more energy and sleeping well.

That's it here in the great PNW. Wish the weekend had another day though - I'm anticipating a busy week.

Take care, "see" you soon!

Finished up with the quantitative methods class and turned everything in last night. Although I can't post or anything in the new class I do have the text reading assignment so I can get a jump on that and head to Scarborough Faire this weekend. It is opening weekend for my "home" renaissance festival. I have already booked a hotel room. I know I'll be there Saturday but don't know about Sunday. I talked to an old friend from my TI days who has recently returned to Texas. He is my age and has a 6 month old baby boy! I think he's nuts! LOL Anyway, we talked for about two hours and we are going to try and get together this weekend. It will be great to see him, his new (to me) wife and baby.
Oh, yeah, and Kandice and the kids are supposed to be at faire this weekend too. LOL I need more hours in the day or more weekend days!
The online format for my classes doesn't follow the ground school schedule. It is termed "non-traditional" and I get a new class every 8 weeks. The only break we have in classes in the online schedule is two weeks at the Yule holiday season usually starting back up right after New Year day (in grad school that is the Thursday after).
It's crazy what we do. We know certain things trigger adverse responses in our bodies yet we just can't seem to stay away. Good luck on the "no refined sugar" plan. You can do it!

No worries. I know you're at the end of your quarter. Spring quarter here at the U started this Monday. Lots of tan students who must have traveled south for Spring Break.

All pretty good here. Work, kids, and garden stuff.

Scale has been eeking up so I'm re-pledging on my no refined sugar plan today. It makes me feel bad when I eat it - tired, joint inflammation, weight gain. You'd think it would be a "duh!" situation but that's addiction.

Nothing else to report, take care, good luck with finishing your class.

Hi there,

Washer and dryer in your unit - very exciting. I totally get that one - congrats. I've always wanted to go to a Renaissance Faire - they have one near Seattle but I've never been. I know some people that are total addicts, down to the smallest details. They hang out with the civil war re-enactors and I've actually been to a couple of those. Men and their weapons :-) But you're probably used to that being in Texas and all :-)

Tonight I'm going to a dinner and seminar put on by the AARP (yes, I'm that old) addressing retirement planning for women. Maybe I'll meet someone cute tee hee. It's also my son's 22nd birthday but we're celebrating next week after he gets moved. So 22 years ago right now I was in the throes of labor. Almost had him on the freeway during rush hour. Ah, the memories.

Ta ta for now,
Cat

Hello, Ladies.
Sorry I have been MIA. I took a short "spring break" late last week and weekend. I have since been working on catching up on my homework (due today and turned in last night!). I am, frankly, trying to see if it is possible for me to eek out a 100% in this class. LOL Funny, the things we choose to challenge ourselves.
How is everyone doing?
Yes, fab shoes are electrostatic resistant shoes we have to wear in the wafer fab. They are leather tennis shoes with special soles and they are heavier than the "normal" tennis shoe. Yep, covered from top to toe. Think back to the Intel Inside advertising campaign where you had the metallic rainbow colored suits on people. Pretty much the same sans the metallic colors and the breathing apparatus in the ads (not quite to that point yet in most semiconductor manufacturing facilities....even the next gen ones out there now! LOL).
Still busy with work as well.
My apartment clothes washer came in late last week and I picked it up Monday. Got the email and text this morning that the ventless apartment dryer is ready for pickup today! WooHoo! No more waiting on the washers and dryers in the laundry room and no more buying rolls and rolls of quarters. Can you tell I'm a little excited? Most of my income tax went to these two appliances and to getting the headlights and fog lights on my car (headlights in and installed, waiting on the fog lights to get in so they can be installed).
Anyway, that's about it for me. May be absent for the next week or so and just dodging in and saying "Hi" since this is the final week of this class and I MAY be heading out of town again for the weekend. Kandice and I might head down to the Friends of Faire preview day at Scarborough Renaissance Faire in Waxahachie. Not sure yet. She is recovering from a bout of shingles....OUCH!

Sorry I've been MIA. New phone and tablet sound like fun! I can tell you are a gadget person. And very handy as well!

So fab shoes - are those shoes specially worn in a lab? Are you covered from head to feet? Just trying to imagine in. Hope you get some good R&R in on your days off and your body gets a chance to heal.

My occasional guilty pleasure is a McD Hamburger Happy Meal. It's the sodium that gets me so I try not to do it more than once a month or so. That's one of the major things I've learned here is how salt affects my weight and well being. My blood pressure has gone way down since I've cut most of it out.

Not too much going on here. Busy at work but not too. My younger son's 22nd bday is this Wed. so I'm thinking about what to get him. I just gave him money to help with is move - his sublease is up - and said Happy Birthday when I gave it to him. It's really about as much as I can do right now.

It's a beautiful day today. A bird woke me up tapping on the neighbors siding - making a hole in the side of his house for a nest. There was already one there from last year, but now, he needs a new one. After his family leaves in early summer there's another type of bird that set up housekeeping in the hole for the rest of the summer/fall so perhaps the Junko doesn't like to go back for that reason. I watched him pulling out insulation a bit ago, that can't be good for them. Anyway, the renter next door doesn't seem to be interested in stopping them but I would think it would bother him since it's outside his bedroom wall.

Think I'll go clean up the beds for my plants that have been "hardening" all week. Not sure I want to plant them yet though as it's in the low 30's at night still. It's my 3 day weekend and I fell asleep at 9 last night so was up way earlier than usual this morning.

That's all from the PNW,
Later,
Cat

Hey Cat!
One more day....then off for a few! I need it after yesterday. Spent 15 hours here at work of which 13 were on my feet in front of a tool. I was in the fab for 13 straight hours and by the time I got home (almost 2:00 AM) my whole body hurt and I have a blister on the bottom of my foot (fab shoes don't fit properly, apparently) not to mention I was exhausted. I was HUNGRY too. I had only had around 100 cals so I stopped by McD's and grabbed a Big Mac on the way home (550 cals). I needed something and it was on the way home and didn't require me to prepare it. Not the best choice but about the only one open to me a that time of the morning/night).
Tossed and turned. I was still awake at 5:30 this morning. My body was hurting and I was having spasms in my back. I got up and found some pain killers and muscle relaxers (left over from a few years ago) and took one of each. I reset the alarm for 9:30 and finally got some sleep. I got up at 10:30 (flex time, woohoo!). I am still sore today and my foot is very tender on the bottom. Thankfully, I don't have a long time to spend in the fab today. Have taken a couple of ibuprofen to take the edge off the soreness.
Anyway, enough about my messed up day.

Hey Cat,
Sounds like you had a good weekend.
I know what you mean re the smartphone. I upgraded this weekend. I was going to wait for the Galaxy S5 to some out next month but I went in to get my phone checked since the charging port had become very loose and it wasn't charging properly. One of the contacts has broken from the board so I bought the extra battery and a charger for it (I already had a couple of extra batteries on order as well since the battery in the phone wasn't holding a charge very well any more either). Got to talking with the sales guy after the tech looked at my phone and he verified I was eligible for an early upgrade. So, I had been thinking about one to the Galaxy Notes. They are bigger than the S series of phones and are a cross between a mini tablet and a phone. With the new program I have to "lease to buy" the phone (or be charged the full price...no price break if you outright by the phone these days) which brought my monthly bill up about $10 but if I keep the phone its mine in 2 years or I can "lease" and upgrade in a year and turn the phone back in. I was also eligible for a free Galaxy Tab with $14.95 a month for 1G data (but free when using WiFi) so I got one of those too. The new phone (the Galaxy Note 3) has apps for counting steps and tracking food. I'm going to try them out before I decide on another type of tracker. It doesn't mesh with SP but having the phone to track meals will be a lot easier when I am out and about than having to remember to put it in a laptop when I get back to one.
I didn't get to work this weekend like I was supposed to so had to take a vacation day for the doctors appointment on Thursday. Not so happy about that but when I was on the way home Friday night this car kept flashing it's brights at me. I was headed to Wal-Mart to pick up a prescription and he followed me off and as he drove by in the parking lot he shouted at me to turn on my lights....they were on! So, off I went get the rear lights checked (after I could not find the interior fuse box that holds the fuses for the rear lights...it wasn't that though since I had turn signals and brake lights...the ones I could check with just me). First I removed the battery from the motorcycle and took it to the auto parts place to get it charged since the bike has not started since I went for dad's surgery and it got cold. Then, off to Midas (one of the few auto repair places open on Sat. afternoon). Got there around 11:30 and got in line since I had no appointment. They close at 3:00 on Sat. and they didn't even get to my car until after 3:30! When they were done and verified there was no problem I headed out to eat since I had not had anything but some water that morning! Starving and driving by fast food places...Der Weinerschnitzel caught my attention. Pastrami sandwich, pastrami dog and iced tea (I was REALLY hungry!). Then off to the Sprint store to check the phone and do all that. Then to the auto parts place where I found out my battery was dead dead dead and I needed a new one. Buy new battery and a battery tender to hook the blasted thing up over the winter (going to have to remove it and find someplace safe in the apartment or house to do this) because I'm tired of buying a new battery every spring. Then back to the apartment. It was after 6:00, maybe 6:30 or so, and I had forgotten to take homework with me and I sure as heck wasn't going to work. I read a few of the articles assigned and was just over it for the day and turned on the boob tube. Yesterday the wind was blowing crap all over and I had a massive sinus headache. At least it isn't staying with me like the one that I just got rid of after two months!
So, yesterday was a bust for homework and work as well. I am behind!

The plants sound delicious and I'm sure you will enjoy the fruits of your trip for some time through the spring and summer. I wish there were a way to do something like that at my apartment. When I get back to my house in Rowlett I will have to work toward repairing the back yard and preparing it so I can have some kind of garden. I'm thinking raised beds since the ground where I live is pretty much clay. LOL
I get a visual of all your little plants eagerly awaiting their trip outside for the day!

It's Guinness Day...right? LOL

Hi Chole -

So have you heard back re your tests? Hope everything is good. Hope you had a nice weekend.

I bought a bunch of greens at the edible plant sale. Spinach, kale, lettuce, chard, baby bok choi. Plus some edible flowers and mint. It was a total 3 hour bus ride - we got hung up downtown between the Sounders game and a St. Patrick's Day parade. The time flies by now that I have my smart phone and music. I'm so used to it by now but with Google maps for transit I feel confident making it everywhere now.

I have to "harden" the plants for a couple weeks before I can put them in the ground. That means outside during the day and inside at night. Kind of funny seeing them waiting to go out the front door in the a.m. We've had more rain this past month than like ever. Rivers of it. I'm sure California wishes we would pass some on to them.

We're having a St. Patrick's Day pizza party here at work today. I will try to show restraint :-)
Erin go braugh and have a healthy day!

Actually, I am heading to work (a late day but I needed to sleep in this morning and then relax a bit). I spent Thursday morning at the doctor's office and didn't get out until almost 1:30. She had a lot more tests run than I figured on. I was starving by the time I was done (fasting for blood work!). About 12:30 I emailed my boss from my phone and asked if I could work today instead of trying to get work done and working really late on Thursday.
Before I go, though, I have to check the fuses in the car. My tail lights are not on. Brake and turn signals are good but no tail lights. If it isn't one thing it's another.
Enjoy the market and get some good starters. Healthy, tasty food!
It's been pizza for me since Thursday. That's what happens when I am so hungry I don't care what it is just as long as it is fast. And I ate too much both Thursday and last night. It's gone now so that's good. LOL

Chole --
TGIF!
Spent the day at the hospital visiting a very sick friend. Reminds me to be grateful for my health and not to take it for granted.

Quiet week at work so took Thursday as a vacation day. Did some cooking and relaxing. Scale is cooperating this week, although overindulged with my friends sister after the hospital. Chocolate covered berries and cherries and homemade almond cookies. Haven't had sweets like that in a while. I get ahead and then seem to like to sabotage my efforts.

Tomorrow hope to get down to south Seattle to the Seattle Tilth edible plant sale. Long ride on the bus but want to get some veggie starts and the tilth's are so healthy and productive. Totally organic too.

It's definitely springtime here. All kinds of bulbs starting to bloom along with the all the flowering trees. So pretty.

Hope you get some time to relax after your busy week. Any exciting plans for the weekend?

Hi there,

Hope you are having a good day Chole!

I'm super bummed as my Activity Tracker left my shoe sometime yesterday. I got home to sync it and the clip and back was on my shoe but the front working part was not. I changed the battery a couple weeks ago and it was really difficult to get it off and on the clip so maybe I didn't have it on quite tight enough and then hit something getting on or off the bus and it popped off. I'm hoping that it might be under my desk at work. I'll see on Monday. I'll probalby have to figure out how to budget a new one in the next couple weeks.

Oh well, best not to ge too attached to things. But it is a great motivator.

Lots to be happy about though. It's not raining and the sun has even peeked out a few times this morning. I have a $85 gift certificate left for my favorite natural foods grocery store to use this weekend. My older son had a good move to Kirkland this week and may be getting a promotion at work. I had a super busy week at work and got 4 major projects done. So glad I'm getting to rest my eyes today.

Best of all I did the final draft of my demand letter for the car accident in Dec. 2011. I'll do a last read this weekend and send it off to the other guy's insurance company next week. It's scary but I need to get this behind me. I'm always so afraid of doing battle but am not using a lawyer. I think my case is strong enough and I did beaucoup research on how to write it. I had 3 years to settle and have been writing it for about a year now so it's time.

Meeting up with a couple of work friends for happy hour at the local watering hole. I forsee a grilled cheese sandwich, chips and dill pickle for $2.50 for dinner along with one martini. "The usual". Not the healthiest but I've planned for it calorie wise. It's a once-a-month event.

Ciao for now - have a good weekend...
Cat

I am not sure what is causing the nose bleeds. I do know it isn't high BP. I am getting worried that the ongoing headache and nose bleeds are symptomatic of something else (hopefully just massive stress) and am waiting to hear back from the clinic I went to on the 11th on if one of the doctors I would like to see is accepting new patients. I know one isn't (they told me that when I called back after a couple of days wait on Friday) but really hoping the other is. Otherwise I am going to have to take time off and go see my other doctor down in Rowlett.
My income tax should deposit this week. WooHoo.
I don't have credit cards. I got rid of mine years ago when debit cards started being accepted by rental car companies in place of a credit card (basically, when they started being used like credit cards). Good for you for paying yours off!

Hi Chole,

My landlord who lives on the side of the house that controls the heat likes to keep it very low. It’s OK with me, I grew up that way in Michigan. Mostly we wear polar fleece and caps in the house during the winter. I decided this year to buy a very small, inexpensive space heater and a friend donated an old electric blanket which have been great to take the chill off when I get home from work. I only use the space heater when I’m in that room and unplug it when I leave. I don’t think either uses too much energy.

I understand about the parents, I felt that way often with my kids. I never was super patient with too many interruptions when I was trying to work. Before my dad passed away he would call me like a dozen times a day, mostly repeating the same news. I loved him so much that I let it go but there were a few times I just had to get a little mad at him. If I said I would get in trouble at work that seemed to get him to slow down at least for a day or two!!! Little white lie.

Shoot with the nosebleeds already. Do you think maybe this is related to the headaches?

My income tax refund was back and spent a couple weeks ago. Used extreme discipline to use the ENTIRE thing to FINALLY pay off a credit card I had had for maybe 15 years – very exciting!!!! One more to go and I’ll be debt free. Will be first time in 30 years. Of course I have no assets but will be able to start building that after this last card is done.

Wow, isn’t the weather crazy there! My ex lives in Laramie and I saw the other day where it was upper 40’s during the day and -7 at night. More and more snow in the Midwest and Great Lakes. Here Spring is in the air, the birds are chirping and the daffodils are blooming!

Had a good week here except the dentist appt yesterday. Could have been worse though. I’m going to get a silver medal for my steps this week. I’ve been very determined. I can’t understand why some lbs. aren’t sliding off though. Will have to look more carefully to see where the calories are coming in I guess.

Have a fabulous trip to Dallas. Hope you get in some good R&R with your sweetie.

emoticon

Just today and a short one tomorrow (worked longer hours this week so Kandice and I can get to Dallas for a dinner meeting we want to attend). Looking forward to some down time and anxiously awaiting my income tax return getting in (should post in the next week or so).

Another nose bleed last night. Still waiting to hear about the doc appointment. Headache is not so good today but then we are supposed to get into the mid-70's today (yesterday barely hit the 40's). I don't really mind the cooler weather since it puts of the sweltering heat of the summer. LOL

Hope you have had a great week!

Hi Cat,
Considering that I am having issues with my heater I am not sure that is it. They came in and replaced the thermostat (finally!) a couple of weeks ago as well as some burned wires to the blower. That hasn't fixed my heating issues completely. Thankfully it isn't 56* inside my apartment any longer when I get home or get up from the blower not kicking on (pulling current and buzzing away but not engaging) and making my electric bill go up, up, up! The office tells me they have ordered the new blower and that delivery could take up to three weeks. I thought that was going to be okay until we got back down into the 20's last night (with some light freezing rain!). It was in the low 60's in my apartment when I got home (temp was set at 67*) so I bumped up the setting to get it to kick on. I never did. I made dinner and started homework and got really chilled so I got up and just turned the fan to the "on" position. It actually took about 15 minutes before it kicked on. I raised the temp in the apartment to 72* before I went to bed just in case it didn't control when I put it back on auto before sleep.
I also don't typically have nose bleeds unless my BP is high (have been monitoring and it isn't) so I am not at all sure what is happening. I have called the clinic I went to on the 11th about my BP for a follow-up and am waiting for a call back (I saw a PA as a walk-in so they are checking on available appointments with the family practice docs for the next week or so) on an appointment.
Right now I'm content with the alone time. I have a feeling that when I move back down to Rowlett my parents are not going to leave me be. I dread having to get on to them to leave me alone so I can do homework. I tell them all the time before I go down and when I am there that I have homework and they just don't listen. I will cross that bridge when I come to it and it may include a deadbolt on my bedroom door! LOL
Glad the spring is on it's way there. We got hit with another blast of cold last night. It might not even get out of the 30's today!
Got the homework done and turned in last night and will start on the reading assignment for the week that starts tomorrow (school week is wonky and runs Thursday through Wednesday!).
Have a great day!

Hi Chole,

That's a bummer to wake up to. Hope you do get to veg this weekend and that the rest of your day goes better. My son used to get those, we kind of figured out it was because of the heat on all the time in the winter. No moisture. Some people just seem to be more prone in the nose zone. lol!

Yeah, I spend more time on my own than I'd like to. Having kids around all those years filled up all the empty spaces and I wished I had more alone time. Now I wish I had less!!! Never satisfied emoticon

We are definitely having Spring now. Still in the low 30's at night but I see more and more daffodils coming up and cherry blossoms coming out. It's starting to smell different too. I heard there is more snow in the east today.

Ta ta for now,
Cat

Ugh!
Day didn't start out so great. Got up early this AM to go to the restroom (before the alarm went off). On the way back to bed there is blood streaming down my face and dripping on the carpet. I HATE these blasted nose bleeds that just start for no reason.
It took forever to get stopped so I didn't get to have my last hour of sleep (couldn't get back to sleep by the time I finally got it stopped). I'm grumpy.

I felt the need to completely veg this weekend. I actually got rid of my headache for a couple of days! It's back today though but could be related to lack of sleep. The other thing is that with doing the 'veg' over the weekend I am not ahead on my school work any more. I need to buckle down and get ahead so I have the time to just enjoy when we are on spring break with the kids. I did do some school work Saturday morning but after that I didn't pick it up again.

Happy to hear you are feeling back to normal. I don't know that many people here in Lubbock (I've been here six years but can say I really only have one person I would consider a friend, the rest are acquaintances) and I spend a lot of time alone when I am here. It is also one of the reasons I am probably on the roads a lot.

I think I forgot to take something out of the freezer for dinner.....crap!

Better safe than sorry, that's for sure.

I ended up not going to the birthday party. I was feeling not at all social that day and it seemed like too much. That happens sometimes.

Did get together with a few of my gal pals today and went to the Seattle Art Museum for a Miro exhibit and lunch. Feeling more back to normal and ready to go to work tomorrow. Made a big pot of crockpot chicken veggie noodle soup last night. Very healthy and good for lunches this week.

Have a healthy week - good luck with school!

I don't know but is has to be something common between fresh and saltwater fish/shellfish. Kandice won't even go to a Chinese restaurant with me. LOL She says she wouldn't enjoy the meal because she would be too worried that I got something that was cross contaminated somehow.

Enjoy the get together.

You obviously needed the rest even though you may not have thought so.

grrrrrrr, that makes me mad to hear about your apartment management. I've been a renter most of my adult life and I know what that's like. I REALLY hope you can figure out how to get back to Dallas.

Can't believe I didn't wake up once until noon today. Didn't have anything scheduled for this morning so I turned my alarm off last night to see when I would wake up naturally. Good gravy.

60th birthday happy hour get together at 5 for a former co-worker, should be fun to see the old gang.

What is is exactly in shellfish/fish/seaweed makes for the allergic reaction? I know if's fairly common, watched a friend have a reaction once, not a place to go for sure.

Later,

I read labels but looking for other things. I have to check out and see if there are any fish or shellfish products used in anything. You wouldn't believe how many products use anchovy paste or anchovies! Also have to look for other things like Worcestershire sauce that uses anchovy paste! I also stay away from things like seaweed since I don't know how I will react to vegetation that comes from the sea. Basically, if it comes from the water I stay away. I DON'T ever want to have to use the epi-pens I keep with me! LOL

Sticking with the protein and veggie based theme I am eating a lot of eggs these days. I don't mind since I love them. Dinner last night was half a dozen hard boiled eggs eaten while I was doing homework, basically like I was snacking on them for an hour or so. LOL I was hungry since when I got home there was a notice on my door that the apartment management company was charging me $60 for damaged mini-blinds and telling me a maintenance guy would be in within 7 days to replace them. I got pretty livid since I didn't damage the blinds....the contractors they hired to replace windows last year did. So, I headed off looking for blinds. The Big Lots didn't have the right size so I was off to Wal-Mart. Found them, took them to the apartment and had to get a screw driver to use for leverage to break the paint that was over the part of the fastener that swings open so you can remove them. Put the new ones up and took pictures of the crappy job and the crumbling structure around the window (had told them it was a crappy job when they first had this done AND about the blinds). Headed to the office this AM to let them know that I replaced the blinds that THEIR CONTRACTORS damaged and showed the pics of the crap (I really don't know how the window is actually still in the wall, I think if you pushed hard from outside it would fall into the spare bedroom) job and crumbling framing. The apartment manager INSISTED that they didn't damage the blinds that the originals wouldn't fit into the new windows, etc. I pointed out that whether the window was the same size or not the opening was and that I still HAVE the old blinds and that, no, they didn't put new ones in. She didn't listen in the least. I REALLY REALLY REALLY need to get back to Dallas and into my OWN house. I HATE this apartment complex and its management. I have a list of crap jobs they have done over the last six years and it just keeps getting worse. Thing is, I don't have the money for another deposit on another apartment. I am STUCK!

Okay, I've ranted and raved about my apartment woes. Sorry! LOL

Hope you have a great weekend!

Greetings!

There is so much sodium everywhere. Surprising we're not all jerky lol! I've turned into a real label reader, it takes me way too long to shop but I have it down to a few brands I'll buy now for processed stuff like soup, cereal and the like. It's difficult even in the "health food/organic" section to find low sodium. My cooking experiment this weekend will involve soup. I've never made it and want to make some no sodium chicken noodle or chicken and rice with veggies to have for lunches this week. I also am going to do the first try at gluten free baking. I paid $2 for one lonely biscotti this morning so I'm going to make some almond low cal ones. So excellent dunks in coffee with milk. Gluten free so I can share them with the roomies. Normally whenever I bake, which isn't often, they can't help me out and I end up eating whatever it is all by myself. I know gluten free can be tricky as far as the ingredients binding but I've researched some prepared baking mixes, hopefully I can find one at our coop.

I love the Healthy Choice Golden Turkey Breast and Lemon Pepper Fish meals and have them often. High protein, average sodium and tasty. Reasonable portion size and well balanced. The only frozen entrees I eat except for an occasional Amy's vegetarian burrito. I commend you on lowering the carbs by eating more veggies. I know I don't get enough vegetables still. Keep up the good work!

I went to the doctor's this morning. Great news is that my BP was down to 119/75!!! I also got on the scale and even though the one in their office is always higher than mine at home it still showed that I'd lost 15 lbs. The nurse and the doctor asked me how I did it and I said several times SparkPeople, SparkPeople, SparkPeople. Gotta pass the word. That's the lowest BP in years.

It's the end of my workweek in about an hour. Hooray! See you on the flip side :-)

My sodium intake is always above the recommended level. This may not be good but when I hit the low sodium stuff too long I start having those muscle cramps and craving salty stuff (which is mostly junk as we know!). So, I don't worry about taking in too much with the processed foods (I bring a healthy choice, smart ones, lean cuisine, or some such for my lunches at work) even though the content is high. I have also started moving toward a higher protein/lower grains intake. I am trying to get my carbs through fruits and veggies instead of with the grains. I have not cut them out completely just continue to lower them as I can. I need to see how this is affecting my weight. I can already tell you my calorie intake is actually lower. LOL

Have you ever tried chiropractic? Sometimes nerves in the spine get pinched from long periods of sitting or holding the head at a certain angle - or for those like me who mouse all day. That has caused headaches with me until I get an adjustment. Just another idea that costs money but can be well worth it. I've never used a TENS before.

Yes, the pressure is on for the weight loss with this extra short month (sweet part is that payday comes sooner!!).

I'm using a more liquid-y diet this week - soup for dinner, that seems to be helping. I found a brand that offers no sodium varieties (Health Valley) - I've found through this SP journey that sodium is a big enemy. I feel a sense of accomplishment this a.m. from resisting even 1 of the chocolate donettes brought to a meeting this morning. Has to be all or nothing with sugar for me.

The headache is still around but I found my e-stim unit (an inexpensive TENS) that I have used on my neck and shoulders for the last few days. It seems to be helping lessen the intensity as well as loosen up the tension from the sitting and studying.

I need to weigh and see how I'm doing with the challenge here at work.

BP has been well in the normal range since getting the monitor (go figure!) and changing the BP med to add the diuretic.

Crossing fingers for the end of the month (28th) for you. Happy to hear the knees are doing well and that you are having pain-free days. That ALWAYS helps in the feel good and get healthy department!

Heck, we're in the low 70's right now. BEAUTIFUL weather the last few days...just a little windy.

Hi there!

All quiet here on the western front.

Glad you had a fun trip to see your gal. I wonder what happened to my charm bracelet. I loved that thing because of all the memories. How is the headache?

Put the most steps so far on my SmartTracker last night. Walked my bus route 2.5 miles before getting on. Feel great today, no knee issues. I feel so much healthier these days, actually many pain-free days.

I have a goal set of 185 by Feb. 30th (this was actually my Jan 1st goal) and I'm 1.5 lbs away. Will I make it?? It's such slow going even with eating healthy and exercising. Up and down the same 3 or 4 lbs. for the past month. When I reach it it will be my lowest in 15 years and 20 lbs. gone since joining SP! Then onward down to my final goal of 155.

Beautiful sunny, but chilly day today. Spring is starting to be evident. Even the light is different.

OK, that's all for now,

How was your "I Heart You" weekend?
Got home last night. Blew my streak of logging in to SP but, oh, well, what can you do.
My tattoo guy was booked all Saturday night and Sunday so we didn't get any ink while we were down in the DFW area.
Got Kandice one of those charm bracelets you add to from the jeweler. All the charms fit all the bracelets and we had checked out the bracelets over the holidays and the clasps at the one's at Kay (I think) just didn't seem secure AND they didn't have a size she liked. This helps me out....when I can't think of anything to get her for some occasion then I can get a charm. LOL
Headache is still lingering but BP is good. So, will do the follow up in about 10 days and see where to go from here. I want to get this gone so I can go get my eyes checked. As long as something is affecting my vision an eye exam is a wasted expense.
Anyway, need to catch up on homework and work work. Later!

Glad to hear about the BP. Mine was creeping up rapidly before SP. Losing the 20lbs so far, exercising more, and cutting way back on sodium has brought it back down to normal. I think constant pain can elevate it too, just my guess, and I was really suffering from the bad knee back then.

OK, so I won't feel guilty anymore not logging onto the Planet. You would definitely qualify for the Proud Lesbians over 50 team - we are an AWESOME and very active group (Stoppin by to say Hello thread). I've learned so much from them about positive thinking and staying on track with the support of others. We love new members and you would fit right in.

Lunch was very fun. Claudia was my work buddy - we checked in every day re personal stuff and she made me laugh. Her grant funding ran out the end of November and now she is taking care of her dad who is in end stages so leaving when she did seems to be the right timing. We went to the Veggie Grill which is vegan and had a Baja "chickin'" salad with mango and avocado. I thought I was being so healthy but when I got back and logged it it was 820 calories!! Of course I didn't forgo the tortilla strips and dressing :-( Only enough calories left today for a protein drink tonight.

Have a good evening,
Cat

No one is posting in the other team. I know that Shell is in grad school, teaches full time and has kids at home. Have only seen posts from her here and there on FB too. Usually when she and her partner are doing something.

Gail was the other active member but she's not on right now and don't expect her back at least for a year. She's focusing on paying off her house and going to help out her daughter when the baby is born. I need to email her ans see how Mandy is doing. Lucie, another member of that team, has stopped posting. Not sure why but I see her posts on FB and she is doing well so not so worried about her. Molly does a "drive by" every year or so and I don't think Lynn has ever posted in the team. Neither of them are active on SP any longer.

This is my most active team. LOL At least we can support one another!

As for smart...eh, more like goal driven. I didn't think about GPA's until I was a few courses from being done with the B.S. and had to ace them rest of the courses out (A's, no A- or lower!) to graduate magna cum laude. We'll see how this goes. This quantitative methods class may kill me. LOL

Got a wrist BP monitor last night (they didn't have the XL cuffs to get an arm monitor and I need the XL cuff). So far my BP has been ok. Took it last night a little after midnight and today a little before noon. I am logging it in a spreadsheet since the doc wanted me to track it. Picked up some potassium gluconate last night because of the diuretic he added to my BP med. I have a hard enough time keeping electrolytes balanced without that! I will probably need to restock the calcium citrate and magnesium as well. I also have some Gatorade on hand just in case. Not great for the sugars but it does the trick when I start getting cramps from getting unbalanced.
Headache is still here but I feel more relieved knowing that my BP is actually not skyrocketing like I thought it might be doing. I will make sure it is controlled before heading off to get the old vision checked. Maybe the changes I've noticed in my vision are causing the headaches. I just want to make sure the vision changes aren't due to changes in my BP before spending the $$.

Glad you had a good time at the ceremony. Some people just refuse to hear what you say unless you get insistent about it. Have a great lunch and get some rest...rest for me too! I need it. :-D

Wow, you are smart!! The weight loss challenge sounds like a fine idea being at work and all. Good luck, I'm rooting for you! I would love to lose even 10 lbs by June. Hope you can figure out the headaches, I've suffered from cycles of those my entire life. But I'm happy to say the migraines stopped after menopause.

Ceremony last night was a lot of fun - many laughs and met some really nice peeps. The woman next to me learned I was single and kept pointing out men for me to chat up. Yeah right, I mentioned once that one of them was not my type AND the wrong gender but she didn't get it. I did OK with the smorgasbord, went over my daily calories by about 100 and since I don't do that very often I'm not worried about it. It was a VERY Swedish event - decorations, foods, the way the place looked. Reminded me a lot of my grandparent's house in Wisconsin. They were very Scandinavian.

OK then, I'm ready to get smacked in the face! As they say, hope springs eternal.

Off to the Veggie Grill with a former co-worker for lunch. Hoping to get a long walk in after work and then get to bed early. Super sleepy the past few days.

We seem to be the only ones on this team these days. Haven't checked out the other team you referred me to yet - how's that going?

Ciao for now!

Cat

School is going well. Waiting on the final grades to be posted in my economics class. The last two grades will be for the team project and my problems for the last week. Right now I am sitting at a 94.6 so, unless we crapped out on the whole team project, I should get an A and maintain my 4.0 GPA.
New class is a statistics class called Quantitative Methods.
Enjoy the awards event and do what you need to do to stay on track. I joined a 16 week weight loss challenge here at work. Paid $10 to join. Each person pays the fee and that is added to the $300 donated by the CEO. The person that loses the highest percentage gets 60% of the pot, 2nd 30% and 3rd 10%. So I'm trying to jump start myself. I want to lose 20 lbs by my birthday in June. Hopefully this will help me get there and just maybe some more. LOL
I was 50 before I met K and when I met her I was seeing someone else (not an exclusive arrangement). Our relationship is rather complicated but it has been working for over 3 years. Before the last two I hadn't even dated for a decade! I just quit and got into other things and just stopped looking. It tends to smack you in the face when you least expect it from my experience. LOL

Okay, heading out to one of the clinics here. I have had a low grade headache for the last 2-3 weeks and my eyesight is not quite right. I am afraid my BP has gone wonky and my meds have quit working. But then again, it could be my prescription has changed and that is causing my headache with all the studying I am doing and the eyesight strain is causing the headaches. In any case, I am tired of popping ibuprofen several times a day and it really not working well so off to the clinic I go. I checked with my lead engineer here at work (he's something of a hypochondriac so I figure he's a good source) to get a recommendation on where to go since my PCP is still down in the Dallas area. LOL

Later! Have a wonderful day and let me know how that awards thing goes. Have FUN!!!

Lord only knows if I'll find Ms. Right. I've 57 and haven't figured it out yet.

Others of my Spark Friends are battling really intense weather now. Especially in CO and MN. Sub zero temps, many inches of snow. Did I tell you we got a good snow last weekend here? It was so pretty but was gone within 48 hours.

Event at the Swedish Cultural Center near downtown tonight. Award ceremony and dinner (no I'm not up for an award!!). Not sure what the food offerings will be but most likely a buffet. I'm really going to have to be mindful as my sweet tooth has returned with a vengeance lately. I may have to resort again to the No Sugar Policy to get back on track with my tastebuds.

How is school going?

Ciao for now! Cat

It is better to wait for something that feels right than to settle for something you know isn't. You'll make that connection with someone.

It was snowing this morning when I headed to work. I don't think it will be sticking. The roads were wet, the windshield iced over and a dusting on the car but nothing really sticking on the ground even though it was in the low 20's (only supposed to hit 27* today). All this means to be careful on the way home and in the morning and to check out the weather report this evening. LOL

Well, that's frustrating.

I think it's settled down now but people are still excited about it - although we all got sidetracked by our 2nd snow of the winter this past weekend - sure was pretty, but people kind of freak out as it's not a regular occurance.

The parade last week was CRAZY!!! I watched it on my computer at work. More people downtown that day than the entire population of Seattle proper. One of my sons went - it's a good memory.

I'm thinking no more dates with Jan - it was nice, but there isn't really a connection. Better luck next time although my membership with match.com has now lapsed.

Have a good, healthy week!

Problem with printing it is that it takes so much ink and those cartridges are killer (they aren't cheap!!!!). The problem is here with out firewall and they aren't working on it. I asked about it when it changed over a year ago. They had done some upgrades over the weekend and I came in on Monday and couldn't open the secure ebook for my class. We tried from several computers (my bosses, another engineers, my work laptop, my work desktop) with the same results. Went to IT, they told me that nothing had changed and ....sure....right....I just can't open my ebook now. So, I just bring MY laptop and either keep it open or go to the breakroom and connect through the wifi there, open the ebook, then head back to my desk with my laptop. LOL
LOL, nope, a process engineering technician isn't classy. I'm a glorified gopher that runs experiments and collects data for my engineers.

Has it settled down there now that the big win is a week past?
How are you doing? Any more lunch dates?
