I usually do wear a costume of some sort. I am hoping to find all my fair garb one of these days. I seems to be on walkabout! I ended up buying enough to get me through a day at fair when I went to Sherwood Forrest Fair over spring break. I did end up buying a new belt pouch. One of the shop owners fixed my other pouch for me (it had lost a button and wouldn't stay closed...by button, the original was a horn button that leather looped around to keep the flap down, I bought a steel button with the tree of life on it to replace the missing one). I bought a belt pouch from her shop (more expensive than I intended on buying but....it should last forever if I don't lose it or it doesn't go on walkabout to try and find the rest of my stuff!).

I bought a glucometer the other day. I started monitoring my blood sugar yesterday. I have to journal what I eat and my blood sugar and find out what is making it stay a little high...not diabetes high but not good either. Fasting blood sugar should be below 100 from what my paperwork from the doctor says. Mine was almost 120 yesterday morning and it was 140 this morning. I need to do more research. The A1C level is an average over three months and is measured a little differently. Mine is 5.8% and should be under 6% so that method is getting high as well. It is time to get ahead of this and find out my "triggers" and modify my eating habits. For the time being I am suspending the "lose weight" focus and switching to a "blood sugar triggers" focus. I also got some soluble fiber to start taking (sugar free and vegetarian...not that I'm vegetarian, lol). Fiber attaches to LDL cholesterol to help remove it from the system. I am hoping this will help in lowering the LDL and bringing my HDL/LDL ratio more in line with what it is supposed to be.

Woohoo on keeping up with the restricted sugar.
Ellen but no Ellen, huh? Sounds like fun.
I understand the "when the heck did I do that!?!" feeling. I have bruises and sore spots I have no clue how I got them.

Okay, now for the b!tching....LOL (feel free to skip the rant)
I HATE MARKETING! My current class is marketing. I have NEVER liked marketing. AND, it has another team assignment that has crap due EVERY week. There is the text book to read and, so far, a MINIMUM of six (6!) journal articles assigned. AND we have two papers that have to be written. One due this week. I HATE THIS CLASS and I just started the second week.

(okay, b!tching over...for now)

lol - I hear you! I was wondering where the weekend went - passed by so fast.

Sounds like a really fun time at the fair. Wow, 5 miles, that's a goodly amount of walking. Do you wear a costume?

So are cholesterol and AIC reflective of each other? If one goes down does the other? I don't know much about blood sugar. Haven't had to pay attention to that so far. I know it takes alot of vigilance to keep it in check - best of luck with that. We can only ignore our genetics and bodies for so long. I have a physical coming up and will have the cholesterol level checked, thanks for the reminder, it's been years and I know it was high the last time. Hopefully the weight loss and exercise will have brought it down.

Sugar avoidance still holding. Attended a catered lunch at work today for a department meeting with the dean. I avoided all the sweets and had a bunch of the yummy green salad with little dressing and a modest serving of the Asian noodle salad. I did something to my foot yesterday that feels almost like a sprain. Seemed like a wise decision to postpone my Monday trip to the gym until tomorrow. Hopefully it will be OK in the morning. Sad thing is as I get older I sometimes don't even know how I hurt myself ;-p

The Ellen DeGeneres show was filming on campus today out by the big fountain. I couldn't go but here she was "visiting" our beautiful campus via her studio so I'm sure some were disappointed that they didn't get to see her in person. Very cool anyway.

Ciao - have a great Tuesday!
Cat

Hi, Cat.

Glad to hear you had such a good day with Joe. Sounds fun.

Ended up walking over 5 miles on Saturday through the Faire so that is a good thing. Didn't catch up with Kandice and the kids until outside the gate at closing. She was feeling bad but had "soldiered" though the day due to the kids and friends with her. Yesterday she was down for the count. She couldn't even keep any meds down. I told her to let me know if she needed me for anything (I was on my way home and could have changed my route to go help her out). She said she would get through so I came on home. I will text her in an hour or so to see how she is doing. If she is in bed she will be up and getting ready to go get the youngest by then.

I friend Bob and his wife and their 6 month old son met me at fair. Bob and Rheena were not married (hadn't even met) last time I saw Bob. We worked together at TI and we hadn't seen one another for probably 12 years or so. He's my age. I told him he was nuts when he told me about Robert Roy (the baby). LOL The recently moved back to Tx. He had been in PA for a while. The company he was working for lost it's funding and they decided to come to Tx. He had kept the house he had bought all those years ago so they had a place to move in to.

After fair I took them to a family owned Italian restaurant I know and love. They enjoyed the day and the food so I count it as a success!

I need to go get a glucose monitor and work on my HDL/LDL ratio. My cholesterol ratio is not where it needs to be and that make you more susceptible to heart disease. It runs in the family on dads side so I need to do what I can to turn that around. Also, my A1C was at 5.8%. Web says it needs to be below 7% but the paperwork from my doc says 6% so I need to find out what raises my blood sugar and modify my diet accordingly.

Also, exercise helps both cholesterol and glucose so....I need to get moving.

Can I buy a few more hours for the day, please?

Have a good one!

Greetings!

Hope a good time was had by all at the Faire!

Highlight of my weekend was spending the day with Joe. I checked out his new apartment, lugged a bunch of kitchen stuff from my attic on the bus. It's a typical kind o grungy student apartment near campus, smelled a little too much like cat pee even though the carpets had been cleaned. I hope he can be firm with he landlord on getting the carpet replaced.
Anyway, we took a long walk through the University district and ended up having lunch at a Japanese Udon shop. Super yummy.

So far, I'm doing great with the re-institution of the no sugar routine. The first couple days are hell but then it gets much easier. I dropped a couple pounds this week and feel better already - more energy and sleeping well.

That's it here in the great PNW. Wish the weekend had another day though - I'm anticipating a busy week.

Take care, "see" you soon!
Cat

Finished up with the quantitative methods class and turned everything in last night. Although I can't post or anything in the new class I do have the text reading assignment so I can get a jump on that and head to Scarborough Faire this weekend. It is opening weekend for my "home" renaissance festival. I have already booked a hotel room. I know I'll be there Saturday but don't know about Sunday. I talked to an old friend from my TI days who has recently returned to Texas. He is my age and has a 6 month old baby boy! I think he's nuts! LOL Anyway, we talked for about two hours and we are going to try and get together this weekend. It will be great to see him, his new (to me) wife and baby.
Oh, yeah, and Kandice and the kids are supposed to be at faire this weekend too. LOL I need more hours in the day or more weekend days!
The online format for my classes doesn't follow the ground school schedule. It is termed "non-traditional" and I get a new class every 8 weeks. The only break we have in classes in the online schedule is two weeks at the Yule holiday season usually starting back up right after New Year day (in grad school that is the Thursday after).
It's crazy what we do. We know certain things trigger adverse responses in our bodies yet we just can't seem to stay away. Good luck on the "no refined sugar" plan. You can do it!

No worries. I know you're at the end of your quarter. Spring quarter here at the U started this Monday. Lots of tan students who must have traveled south for Spring Break.

All pretty good here. Work, kids, and garden stuff.

Scale has been eeking up so I'm re-pledging on my no refined sugar plan today. It makes me feel bad when I eat it - tired, joint inflammation, weight gain. You'd think it would be a "duh!" situation but that's addiction.

Nothing else to report, take care, good luck with finishing your class.

Hi there,

Washer and dryer in your unit - very exciting. I totally get that one - congrats. I've always wanted to go to a Renaissance Faire - they have one near Seattle but I've never been. I know some people that are total addicts, down to the smallest details. They hang out with the civil war re-enactors and I've actually been to a couple of those. Men and their weapons :-) But you're probably used to that being in Texas and all :-)

Tonight I'm going to a dinner and seminar put on by the AARP (yes, I'm that old) addressing retirement planning for women. Maybe I'll meet someone cute tee hee. It's also my son's 22nd birthday but we're celebrating next week after he gets moved. So 22 years ago right now I was in the throes of labor. Almost had him on the freeway during rush hour. Ah, the memories.

Ta ta for now,
Cat

Hello, Ladies.
Sorry I have been MIA. I took a short "spring break" late last week and weekend. I have since been working on catching up on my homework (due today and turned in last night!). I am, frankly, trying to see if it is possible for me to eek out a 100% in this class. LOL Funny, the things we choose to challenge ourselves.
How is everyone doing?
Yes, fab shoes are electrostatic resistant shoes we have to wear in the wafer fab. They are leather tennis shoes with special soles and they are heavier than the "normal" tennis shoe. Yep, covered from top to toe. Think back to the Intel Inside advertising campaign where you had the metallic rainbow colored suits on people. Pretty much the same sans the metallic colors and the breathing apparatus in the ads (not quite to that point yet in most semiconductor manufacturing facilities....even the next gen ones out there now! LOL).
Still busy with work as well.
My apartment clothes washer came in late last week and I picked it up Monday. Got the email and text this morning that the ventless apartment dryer is ready for pickup today! WooHoo! No more waiting on the washers and dryers in the laundry room and no more buying rolls and rolls of quarters. Can you tell I'm a little excited? Most of my income tax went to these two appliances and to getting the headlights and fog lights on my car (headlights in and installed, waiting on the fog lights to get in so they can be installed).
Anyway, that's about it for me. May be absent for the next week or so and just dodging in and saying "Hi" since this is the final week of this class and I MAY be heading out of town again for the weekend. Kandice and I might head down to the Friends of Faire preview day at Scarborough Renaissance Faire in Waxahachie. Not sure yet. She is recovering from a bout of shingles....OUCH!

Hi Chole! And new folks as well... hope you check in.
emoticon

Sorry I've been MIA. New phone and tablet sound like fun! I can tell you are a gadget person. And very handy as well!

So fab shoes - are those shoes specially worn in a lab? Are you covered from head to feet? Just trying to imagine in. Hope you get some good R&R in on your days off and your body gets a chance to heal.

My occasional guilty pleasure is a McD Hamburger Happy Meal. It's the sodium that gets me so I try not to do it more than once a month or so. That's one of the major things I've learned here is how salt affects my weight and well being. My blood pressure has gone way down since I've cut most of it out.

Not too much going on here. Busy at work but not too. My younger son's 22nd bday is this Wed. so I'm thinking about what to get him. I just gave him money to help with is move - his sublease is up - and said Happy Birthday when I gave it to him. It's really about as much as I can do right now.

It's a beautiful day today. A bird woke me up tapping on the neighbors siding - making a hole in the side of his house for a nest. There was already one there from last year, but now, he needs a new one. After his family leaves in early summer there's another type of bird that set up housekeeping in the hole for the rest of the summer/fall so perhaps the Junko doesn't like to go back for that reason. I watched him pulling out insulation a bit ago, that can't be good for them. Anyway, the renter next door doesn't seem to be interested in stopping them but I would think it would bother him since it's outside his bedroom wall.

Think I'll go clean up the beds for my plants that have been "hardening" all week. Not sure I want to plant them yet though as it's in the low 30's at night still. It's my 3 day weekend and I fell asleep at 9 last night so was up way earlier than usual this morning.

That's all from the PNW,
Later,
Cat

Welcome to the new members (notifications let me know). I hope you come in and join us in the daily vent chat forum.

Hey Cat!
One more day....then off for a few! I need it after yesterday. Spent 15 hours here at work of which 13 were on my feet in front of a tool. I was in the fab for 13 straight hours and by the time I got home (almost 2:00 AM) my whole body hurt and I have a blister on the bottom of my foot (fab shoes don't fit properly, apparently) not to mention I was exhausted. I was HUNGRY too. I had only had around 100 cals so I stopped by McD's and grabbed a Big Mac on the way home (550 cals). I needed something and it was on the way home and didn't require me to prepare it. Not the best choice but about the only one open to me a that time of the morning/night).
Tossed and turned. I was still awake at 5:30 this morning. My body was hurting and I was having spasms in my back. I got up and found some pain killers and muscle relaxers (left over from a few years ago) and took one of each. I reset the alarm for 9:30 and finally got some sleep. I got up at 10:30 (flex time, woohoo!). I am still sore today and my foot is very tender on the bottom. Thankfully, I don't have a long time to spend in the fab today. Have taken a couple of ibuprofen to take the edge off the soreness.
Anyway, enough about my messed up day.

Hey Cat,
Sounds like you had a good weekend.
I know what you mean re the smartphone. I upgraded this weekend. I was going to wait for the Galaxy S5 to some out next month but I went in to get my phone checked since the charging port had become very loose and it wasn't charging properly. One of the contacts has broken from the board so I bought the extra battery and a charger for it (I already had a couple of extra batteries on order as well since the battery in the phone wasn't holding a charge very well any more either). Got to talking with the sales guy after the tech looked at my phone and he verified I was eligible for an early upgrade. So, I had been thinking about one to the Galaxy Notes. They are bigger than the S series of phones and are a cross between a mini tablet and a phone. With the new program I have to "lease to buy" the phone (or be charged the full price...no price break if you outright by the phone these days) which brought my monthly bill up about $10 but if I keep the phone its mine in 2 years or I can "lease" and upgrade in a year and turn the phone back in. I was also eligible for a free Galaxy Tab with $14.95 a month for 1G data (but free when using WiFi) so I got one of those too. The new phone (the Galaxy Note 3) has apps for counting steps and tracking food. I'm going to try them out before I decide on another type of tracker. It doesn't mesh with SP but having the phone to track meals will be a lot easier when I am out and about than having to remember to put it in a laptop when I get back to one.
I didn't get to work this weekend like I was supposed to so had to take a vacation day for the doctors appointment on Thursday. Not so happy about that but when I was on the way home Friday night this car kept flashing it's brights at me. I was headed to Wal-Mart to pick up a prescription and he followed me off and as he drove by in the parking lot he shouted at me to turn on my lights....they were on! So, off I went get the rear lights checked (after I could not find the interior fuse box that holds the fuses for the rear lights...it wasn't that though since I had turn signals and brake lights...the ones I could check with just me). First I removed the battery from the motorcycle and took it to the auto parts place to get it charged since the bike has not started since I went for dad's surgery and it got cold. Then, off to Midas (one of the few auto repair places open on Sat. afternoon). Got there around 11:30 and got in line since I had no appointment. They close at 3:00 on Sat. and they didn't even get to my car until after 3:30! When they were done and verified there was no problem I headed out to eat since I had not had anything but some water that morning! Starving and driving by fast food places...Der Weinerschnitzel caught my attention. Pastrami sandwich, pastrami dog and iced tea (I was REALLY hungry!). Then off to the Sprint store to check the phone and do all that. Then to the auto parts place where I found out my battery was dead dead dead and I needed a new one. Buy new battery and a battery tender to hook the blasted thing up over the winter (going to have to remove it and find someplace safe in the apartment or house to do this) because I'm tired of buying a new battery every spring. Then back to the apartment. It was after 6:00, maybe 6:30 or so, and I had forgotten to take homework with me and I sure as heck wasn't going to work. I read a few of the articles assigned and was just over it for the day and turned on the boob tube. Yesterday the wind was blowing crap all over and I had a massive sinus headache. At least it isn't staying with me like the one that I just got rid of after two months!
So, yesterday was a bust for homework and work as well. I am behind!

The plants sound delicious and I'm sure you will enjoy the fruits of your trip for some time through the spring and summer. I wish there were a way to do something like that at my apartment. When I get back to my house in Rowlett I will have to work toward repairing the back yard and preparing it so I can have some kind of garden. I'm thinking raised beds since the ground where I live is pretty much clay. LOL
I get a visual of all your little plants eagerly awaiting their trip outside for the day!

It's Guinness Day...right? LOL

Hi Chole -

So have you heard back re your tests? Hope everything is good. Hope you had a nice weekend.

I bought a bunch of greens at the edible plant sale. Spinach, kale, lettuce, chard, baby bok choi. Plus some edible flowers and mint. It was a total 3 hour bus ride - we got hung up downtown between the Sounders game and a St. Patrick's Day parade. The time flies by now that I have my smart phone and music. I'm so used to it by now but with Google maps for transit I feel confident making it everywhere now.

I have to "harden" the plants for a couple weeks before I can put them in the ground. That means outside during the day and inside at night. Kind of funny seeing them waiting to go out the front door in the a.m. We've had more rain this past month than like ever. Rivers of it. I'm sure California wishes we would pass some on to them.

We're having a St. Patrick's Day pizza party here at work today. I will try to show restraint :-)
Erin go braugh and have a healthy day!

Actually, I am heading to work (a late day but I needed to sleep in this morning and then relax a bit). I spent Thursday morning at the doctor's office and didn't get out until almost 1:30. She had a lot more tests run than I figured on. I was starving by the time I was done (fasting for blood work!). About 12:30 I emailed my boss from my phone and asked if I could work today instead of trying to get work done and working really late on Thursday.
Before I go, though, I have to check the fuses in the car. My tail lights are not on. Brake and turn signals are good but no tail lights. If it isn't one thing it's another.
Enjoy the market and get some good starters. Healthy, tasty food!
It's been pizza for me since Thursday. That's what happens when I am so hungry I don't care what it is just as long as it is fast. And I ate too much both Thursday and last night. It's gone now so that's good. LOL

TGIF!
Spent the day at the hospital visiting a very sick friend. Reminds me to be grateful for my health and not to take it for granted.

Quiet week at work so took Thursday as a vacation day. Did some cooking and relaxing. Scale is cooperating this week, although overindulged with my friends sister after the hospital. Chocolate covered berries and cherries and homemade almond cookies. Haven't had sweets like that in a while. I get ahead and then seem to like to sabotage my efforts.

Tomorrow hope to get down to south Seattle to the Seattle Tilth edible plant sale. Long ride on the bus but want to get some veggie starts and the tilth's are so healthy and productive. Totally organic too.

It's definitely springtime here. All kinds of bulbs starting to bloom along with the all the flowering trees. So pretty.

Hope you get some time to relax after your busy week. Any exciting plans for the weekend?

Hi there,

Hope you are having a good day Chole!

I'm super bummed as my Activity Tracker left my shoe sometime yesterday. I got home to sync it and the clip and back was on my shoe but the front working part was not. I changed the battery a couple weeks ago and it was really difficult to get it off and on the clip so maybe I didn't have it on quite tight enough and then hit something getting on or off the bus and it popped off. I'm hoping that it might be under my desk at work. I'll see on Monday. I'll probalby have to figure out how to budget a new one in the next couple weeks.
emoticon emoticon
Oh well, best not to ge too attached to things. But it is a great motivator.

Lots to be happy about though. It's not raining and the sun has even peeked out a few times this morning. I have a $85 gift certificate left for my favorite natural foods grocery store to use this weekend. My older son had a good move to Kirkland this week and may be getting a promotion at work. I had a super busy week at work and got 4 major projects done. So glad I'm getting to rest my eyes today.

Best of all I did the final draft of my demand letter for the car accident in Dec. 2011. I'll do a last read this weekend and send it off to the other guy's insurance company next week. It's scary but I need to get this behind me. I'm always so afraid of doing battle but am not using a lawyer. I think my case is strong enough and I did beaucoup research on how to write it. I had 3 years to settle and have been writing it for about a year now so it's time.

Meeting up with a couple of work friends for happy hour at the local watering hole. I forsee a grilled cheese sandwich, chips and dill pickle for $2.50 for dinner along with one martini. "The usual". Not the healthiest but I've planned for it calorie wise. It's a once-a-month event.

Ciao for now - have a good weekend...
Cat

I am not sure what is causing the nose bleeds. I do know it isn't high BP. I am getting worried that the ongoing headache and nose bleeds are symptomatic of something else (hopefully just massive stress) and am waiting to hear back from the clinic I went to on the 11th on if one of the doctors I would like to see is accepting new patients. I know one isn't (they told me that when I called back after a couple of days wait on Friday) but really hoping the other is. Otherwise I am going to have to take time off and go see my other doctor down in Rowlett.
My income tax should deposit this week. WooHoo.
I don't have credit cards. I got rid of mine years ago when debit cards started being accepted by rental car companies in place of a credit card (basically, when they started being used like credit cards). Good for you for paying yours off!

Hi Chole,

My landlord who lives on the side of the house that controls the heat likes to keep it very low. It’s OK with me, I grew up that way in Michigan. Mostly we wear polar fleece and caps in the house during the winter. I decided this year to buy a very small, inexpensive space heater and a friend donated an old electric blanket which have been great to take the chill off when I get home from work. I only use the space heater when I’m in that room and unplug it when I leave. I don’t think either uses too much energy.

I understand about the parents, I felt that way often with my kids. I never was super patient with too many interruptions when I was trying to work. Before my dad passed away he would call me like a dozen times a day, mostly repeating the same news. I loved him so much that I let it go but there were a few times I just had to get a little mad at him. If I said I would get in trouble at work that seemed to get him to slow down at least for a day or two!!! Little white lie.

Shoot with the nosebleeds already. Do you think maybe this is related to the headaches?

My income tax refund was back and spent a couple weeks ago. Used extreme discipline to use the ENTIRE thing to FINALLY pay off a credit card I had had for maybe 15 years – very exciting!!!! One more to go and I’ll be debt free. Will be first time in 30 years. Of course I have no assets but will be able to start building that after this last card is done.

Wow, isn’t the weather crazy there! My ex lives in Laramie and I saw the other day where it was upper 40’s during the day and -7 at night. More and more snow in the Midwest and Great Lakes. Here Spring is in the air, the birds are chirping and the daffodils are blooming!

Had a good week here except the dentist appt yesterday. Could have been worse though. I’m going to get a silver medal for my steps this week. I’ve been very determined. I can’t understand why some lbs. aren’t sliding off though. Will have to look more carefully to see where the calories are coming in I guess.

Have a fabulous trip to Dallas. Hope you get in some good R&R with your sweetie.

emoticon

Just today and a short one tomorrow (worked longer hours this week so Kandice and I can get to Dallas for a dinner meeting we want to attend). Looking forward to some down time and anxiously awaiting my income tax return getting in (should post in the next week or so).

Another nose bleed last night. Still waiting to hear about the doc appointment. Headache is not so good today but then we are supposed to get into the mid-70's today (yesterday barely hit the 40's). I don't really mind the cooler weather since it puts of the sweltering heat of the summer. LOL

Hope you have had a great week!

Hi Cat,
Considering that I am having issues with my heater I am not sure that is it. They came in and replaced the thermostat (finally!) a couple of weeks ago as well as some burned wires to the blower. That hasn't fixed my heating issues completely. Thankfully it isn't 56* inside my apartment any longer when I get home or get up from the blower not kicking on (pulling current and buzzing away but not engaging) and making my electric bill go up, up, up! The office tells me they have ordered the new blower and that delivery could take up to three weeks. I thought that was going to be okay until we got back down into the 20's last night (with some light freezing rain!). It was in the low 60's in my apartment when I got home (temp was set at 67*) so I bumped up the setting to get it to kick on. I never did. I made dinner and started homework and got really chilled so I got up and just turned the fan to the "on" position. It actually took about 15 minutes before it kicked on. I raised the temp in the apartment to 72* before I went to bed just in case it didn't control when I put it back on auto before sleep.
I also don't typically have nose bleeds unless my BP is high (have been monitoring and it isn't) so I am not at all sure what is happening. I have called the clinic I went to on the 11th about my BP for a follow-up and am waiting for a call back (I saw a PA as a walk-in so they are checking on available appointments with the family practice docs for the next week or so) on an appointment.
Right now I'm content with the alone time. I have a feeling that when I move back down to Rowlett my parents are not going to leave me be. I dread having to get on to them to leave me alone so I can do homework. I tell them all the time before I go down and when I am there that I have homework and they just don't listen. I will cross that bridge when I come to it and it may include a deadbolt on my bedroom door! LOL
Glad the spring is on it's way there. We got hit with another blast of cold last night. It might not even get out of the 30's today!
Got the homework done and turned in last night and will start on the reading assignment for the week that starts tomorrow (school week is wonky and runs Thursday through Wednesday!).
Have a great day!

Hi Chole,

That's a bummer to wake up to. Hope you do get to veg this weekend and that the rest of your day goes better. My son used to get those, we kind of figured out it was because of the heat on all the time in the winter. No moisture. Some people just seem to be more prone in the nose zone. lol!

Yeah, I spend more time on my own than I'd like to. Having kids around all those years filled up all the empty spaces and I wished I had more alone time. Now I wish I had less!!! Never satisfied emoticon

We are definitely having Spring now. Still in the low 30's at night but I see more and more daffodils coming up and cherry blossoms coming out. It's starting to smell different too. I heard there is more snow in the east today.

Ta ta for now,
Cat

Ugh!
Day didn't start out so great. Got up early this AM to go to the restroom (before the alarm went off). On the way back to bed there is blood streaming down my face and dripping on the carpet. I HATE these blasted nose bleeds that just start for no reason.
It took forever to get stopped so I didn't get to have my last hour of sleep (couldn't get back to sleep by the time I finally got it stopped). I'm grumpy.

I felt the need to completely veg this weekend. I actually got rid of my headache for a couple of days! It's back today though but could be related to lack of sleep. The other thing is that with doing the 'veg' over the weekend I am not ahead on my school work any more. I need to buckle down and get ahead so I have the time to just enjoy when we are on spring break with the kids. I did do some school work Saturday morning but after that I didn't pick it up again.

Happy to hear you are feeling back to normal. I don't know that many people here in Lubbock (I've been here six years but can say I really only have one person I would consider a friend, the rest are acquaintances) and I spend a lot of time alone when I am here. It is also one of the reasons I am probably on the roads a lot.

I think I forgot to take something out of the freezer for dinner.....crap!

Better safe than sorry, that's for sure.

I ended up not going to the birthday party. I was feeling not at all social that day and it seemed like too much. That happens sometimes.

Did get together with a few of my gal pals today and went to the Seattle Art Museum for a Miro exhibit and lunch. Feeling more back to normal and ready to go to work tomorrow. Made a big pot of crockpot chicken veggie noodle soup last night. Very healthy and good for lunches this week.

Have a healthy week - good luck with school!

I don't know but is has to be something common between fresh and saltwater fish/shellfish. Kandice won't even go to a Chinese restaurant with me. LOL She says she wouldn't enjoy the meal because she would be too worried that I got something that was cross contaminated somehow.

Enjoy the get together.

You obviously needed the rest even though you may not have thought so.

grrrrrrr, that makes me mad to hear about your apartment management. I've been a renter most of my adult life and I know what that's like. I REALLY hope you can figure out how to get back to Dallas.

Can't believe I didn't wake up once until noon today. Didn't have anything scheduled for this morning so I turned my alarm off last night to see when I would wake up naturally. Good gravy.

60th birthday happy hour get together at 5 for a former co-worker, should be fun to see the old gang.

What is is exactly in shellfish/fish/seaweed makes for the allergic reaction? I know if's fairly common, watched a friend have a reaction once, not a place to go for sure.

Later,
Cat

I read labels but looking for other things. I have to check out and see if there are any fish or shellfish products used in anything. You wouldn't believe how many products use anchovy paste or anchovies! Also have to look for other things like Worcestershire sauce that uses anchovy paste! I also stay away from things like seaweed since I don't know how I will react to vegetation that comes from the sea. Basically, if it comes from the water I stay away. I DON'T ever want to have to use the epi-pens I keep with me! LOL

Sticking with the protein and veggie based theme I am eating a lot of eggs these days. I don't mind since I love them. Dinner last night was half a dozen hard boiled eggs eaten while I was doing homework, basically like I was snacking on them for an hour or so. LOL I was hungry since when I got home there was a notice on my door that the apartment management company was charging me $60 for damaged mini-blinds and telling me a maintenance guy would be in within 7 days to replace them. I got pretty livid since I didn't damage the blinds....the contractors they hired to replace windows last year did. So, I headed off looking for blinds. The Big Lots didn't have the right size so I was off to Wal-Mart. Found them, took them to the apartment and had to get a screw driver to use for leverage to break the paint that was over the part of the fastener that swings open so you can remove them. Put the new ones up and took pictures of the crappy job and the crumbling structure around the window (had told them it was a crappy job when they first had this done AND about the blinds). Headed to the office this AM to let them know that I replaced the blinds that THEIR CONTRACTORS damaged and showed the pics of the crap (I really don't know how the window is actually still in the wall, I think if you pushed hard from outside it would fall into the spare bedroom) job and crumbling framing. The apartment manager INSISTED that they didn't damage the blinds that the originals wouldn't fit into the new windows, etc. I pointed out that whether the window was the same size or not the opening was and that I still HAVE the old blinds and that, no, they didn't put new ones in. She didn't listen in the least. I REALLY REALLY REALLY need to get back to Dallas and into my OWN house. I HATE this apartment complex and its management. I have a list of crap jobs they have done over the last six years and it just keeps getting worse. Thing is, I don't have the money for another deposit on another apartment. I am STUCK!

Okay, I've ranted and raved about my apartment woes. Sorry! LOL

Hope you have a great weekend!

Greetings!

There is so much sodium everywhere. Surprising we're not all jerky lol! I've turned into a real label reader, it takes me way too long to shop but I have it down to a few brands I'll buy now for processed stuff like soup, cereal and the like. It's difficult even in the "health food/organic" section to find low sodium. My cooking experiment this weekend will involve soup. I've never made it and want to make some no sodium chicken noodle or chicken and rice with veggies to have for lunches this week. I also am going to do the first try at gluten free baking. I paid $2 for one lonely biscotti this morning so I'm going to make some almond low cal ones. So excellent dunks in coffee with milk. Gluten free so I can share them with the roomies. Normally whenever I bake, which isn't often, they can't help me out and I end up eating whatever it is all by myself. I know gluten free can be tricky as far as the ingredients binding but I've researched some prepared baking mixes, hopefully I can find one at our coop.

I love the Healthy Choice Golden Turkey Breast and Lemon Pepper Fish meals and have them often. High protein, average sodium and tasty. Reasonable portion size and well balanced. The only frozen entrees I eat except for an occasional Amy's vegetarian burrito. I commend you on lowering the carbs by eating more veggies. I know I don't get enough vegetables still. Keep up the good work!

I went to the doctor's this morning. Great news is that my BP was down to 119/75!!! I also got on the scale and even though the one in their office is always higher than mine at home it still showed that I'd lost 15 lbs. The nurse and the doctor asked me how I did it and I said several times SparkPeople, SparkPeople, SparkPeople. Gotta pass the word. That's the lowest BP in years.

It's the end of my workweek in about an hour. Hooray! See you on the flip side :-)

My sodium intake is always above the recommended level. This may not be good but when I hit the low sodium stuff too long I start having those muscle cramps and craving salty stuff (which is mostly junk as we know!). So, I don't worry about taking in too much with the processed foods (I bring a healthy choice, smart ones, lean cuisine, or some such for my lunches at work) even though the content is high. I have also started moving toward a higher protein/lower grains intake. I am trying to get my carbs through fruits and veggies instead of with the grains. I have not cut them out completely just continue to lower them as I can. I need to see how this is affecting my weight. I can already tell you my calorie intake is actually lower. LOL

Have you ever tried chiropractic? Sometimes nerves in the spine get pinched from long periods of sitting or holding the head at a certain angle - or for those like me who mouse all day. That has caused headaches with me until I get an adjustment. Just another idea that costs money but can be well worth it. I've never used a TENS before.

Yes, the pressure is on for the weight loss with this extra short month (sweet part is that payday comes sooner!!).

I'm using a more liquid-y diet this week - soup for dinner, that seems to be helping. I found a brand that offers no sodium varieties (Health Valley) - I've found through this SP journey that sodium is a big enemy. I feel a sense of accomplishment this a.m. from resisting even 1 of the chocolate donettes brought to a meeting this morning. Has to be all or nothing with sugar for me.

The headache is still around but I found my e-stim unit (an inexpensive TENS) that I have used on my neck and shoulders for the last few days. It seems to be helping lessen the intensity as well as loosen up the tension from the sitting and studying.

I need to weigh and see how I'm doing with the challenge here at work.

BP has been well in the normal range since getting the monitor (go figure!) and changing the BP med to add the diuretic.

Crossing fingers for the end of the month (28th) for you. Happy to hear the knees are doing well and that you are having pain-free days. That ALWAYS helps in the feel good and get healthy department!

Heck, we're in the low 70's right now. BEAUTIFUL weather the last few days...just a little windy.

Hi there!

All quiet here on the western front.

Glad you had a fun trip to see your gal. I wonder what happened to my charm bracelet. I loved that thing because of all the memories. How is the headache?

Put the most steps so far on my SmartTracker last night. Walked my bus route 2.5 miles before getting on. Feel great today, no knee issues. I feel so much healthier these days, actually many pain-free days.

I have a goal set of 185 by Feb. 30th (this was actually my Jan 1st goal) and I'm 1.5 lbs away. Will I make it?? It's such slow going even with eating healthy and exercising. Up and down the same 3 or 4 lbs. for the past month. When I reach it it will be my lowest in 15 years and 20 lbs. gone since joining SP! Then onward down to my final goal of 155.

Beautiful sunny, but chilly day today. Spring is starting to be evident. Even the light is different.

OK, that's all for now,

How was your "I Heart You" weekend?
Got home last night. Blew my streak of logging in to SP but, oh, well, what can you do.
My tattoo guy was booked all Saturday night and Sunday so we didn't get any ink while we were down in the DFW area.
Got Kandice one of those charm bracelets you add to from the jeweler. All the charms fit all the bracelets and we had checked out the bracelets over the holidays and the clasps at the one's at Kay (I think) just didn't seem secure AND they didn't have a size she liked. This helps me out....when I can't think of anything to get her for some occasion then I can get a charm. LOL
Headache is still lingering but BP is good. So, will do the follow up in about 10 days and see where to go from here. I want to get this gone so I can go get my eyes checked. As long as something is affecting my vision an eye exam is a wasted expense.
Anyway, need to catch up on homework and work work. Later!

Glad to hear about the BP. Mine was creeping up rapidly before SP. Losing the 20lbs so far, exercising more, and cutting way back on sodium has brought it back down to normal. I think constant pain can elevate it too, just my guess, and I was really suffering from the bad knee back then.

OK, so I won't feel guilty anymore not logging onto the Planet. You would definitely qualify for the Proud Lesbians over 50 team - we are an AWESOME and very active group (Stoppin by to say Hello thread). I've learned so much from them about positive thinking and staying on track with the support of others. We love new members and you would fit right in.

Lunch was very fun. Claudia was my work buddy - we checked in every day re personal stuff and she made me laugh. Her grant funding ran out the end of November and now she is taking care of her dad who is in end stages so leaving when she did seems to be the right timing. We went to the Veggie Grill which is vegan and had a Baja "chickin'" salad with mango and avocado. I thought I was being so healthy but when I got back and logged it it was 820 calories!! Of course I didn't forgo the tortilla strips and dressing :-( Only enough calories left today for a protein drink tonight.

Have a good evening,
Cat

No one is posting in the other team. I know that Shell is in grad school, teaches full time and has kids at home. Have only seen posts from her here and there on FB too. Usually when she and her partner are doing something.

Gail was the other active member but she's not on right now and don't expect her back at least for a year. She's focusing on paying off her house and going to help out her daughter when the baby is born. I need to email her ans see how Mandy is doing. Lucie, another member of that team, has stopped posting. Not sure why but I see her posts on FB and she is doing well so not so worried about her. Molly does a "drive by" every year or so and I don't think Lynn has ever posted in the team. Neither of them are active on SP any longer.

This is my most active team. LOL At least we can support one another!

As for smart...eh, more like goal driven. I didn't think about GPA's until I was a few courses from being done with the B.S. and had to ace them rest of the courses out (A's, no A- or lower!) to graduate magna cum laude. We'll see how this goes. This quantitative methods class may kill me. LOL

Got a wrist BP monitor last night (they didn't have the XL cuffs to get an arm monitor and I need the XL cuff). So far my BP has been ok. Took it last night a little after midnight and today a little before noon. I am logging it in a spreadsheet since the doc wanted me to track it. Picked up some potassium gluconate last night because of the diuretic he added to my BP med. I have a hard enough time keeping electrolytes balanced without that! I will probably need to restock the calcium citrate and magnesium as well. I also have some Gatorade on hand just in case. Not great for the sugars but it does the trick when I start getting cramps from getting unbalanced.
Headache is still here but I feel more relieved knowing that my BP is actually not skyrocketing like I thought it might be doing. I will make sure it is controlled before heading off to get the old vision checked. Maybe the changes I've noticed in my vision are causing the headaches. I just want to make sure the vision changes aren't due to changes in my BP before spending the $$.

Glad you had a good time at the ceremony. Some people just refuse to hear what you say unless you get insistent about it. Have a great lunch and get some rest...rest for me too! I need it. :-D

Wow, you are smart!! The weight loss challenge sounds like a fine idea being at work and all. Good luck, I'm rooting for you! I would love to lose even 10 lbs by June. Hope you can figure out the headaches, I've suffered from cycles of those my entire life. But I'm happy to say the migraines stopped after menopause.

Ceremony last night was a lot of fun - many laughs and met some really nice peeps. The woman next to me learned I was single and kept pointing out men for me to chat up. Yeah right, I mentioned once that one of them was not my type AND the wrong gender but she didn't get it. I did OK with the smorgasbord, went over my daily calories by about 100 and since I don't do that very often I'm not worried about it. It was a VERY Swedish event - decorations, foods, the way the place looked. Reminded me a lot of my grandparent's house in Wisconsin. They were very Scandinavian.

OK then, I'm ready to get smacked in the face! As they say, hope springs eternal.

Off to the Veggie Grill with a former co-worker for lunch. Hoping to get a long walk in after work and then get to bed early. Super sleepy the past few days.

We seem to be the only ones on this team these days. Haven't checked out the other team you referred me to yet - how's that going?

Ciao for now!

Cat

School is going well. Waiting on the final grades to be posted in my economics class. The last two grades will be for the team project and my problems for the last week. Right now I am sitting at a 94.6 so, unless we crapped out on the whole team project, I should get an A and maintain my 4.0 GPA.
New class is a statistics class called Quantitative Methods.
Enjoy the awards event and do what you need to do to stay on track. I joined a 16 week weight loss challenge here at work. Paid $10 to join. Each person pays the fee and that is added to the $300 donated by the CEO. The person that loses the highest percentage gets 60% of the pot, 2nd 30% and 3rd 10%. So I'm trying to jump start myself. I want to lose 20 lbs by my birthday in June. Hopefully this will help me get there and just maybe some more. LOL
I was 50 before I met K and when I met her I was seeing someone else (not an exclusive arrangement). Our relationship is rather complicated but it has been working for over 3 years. Before the last two I hadn't even dated for a decade! I just quit and got into other things and just stopped looking. It tends to smack you in the face when you least expect it from my experience. LOL

Okay, heading out to one of the clinics here. I have had a low grade headache for the last 2-3 weeks and my eyesight is not quite right. I am afraid my BP has gone wonky and my meds have quit working. But then again, it could be my prescription has changed and that is causing my headache with all the studying I am doing and the eyesight strain is causing the headaches. In any case, I am tired of popping ibuprofen several times a day and it really not working well so off to the clinic I go. I checked with my lead engineer here at work (he's something of a hypochondriac so I figure he's a good source) to get a recommendation on where to go since my PCP is still down in the Dallas area. LOL

Later! Have a wonderful day and let me know how that awards thing goes. Have FUN!!!

Lord only knows if I'll find Ms. Right. I've 57 and haven't figured it out yet.

Others of my Spark Friends are battling really intense weather now. Especially in CO and MN. Sub zero temps, many inches of snow. Did I tell you we got a good snow last weekend here? It was so pretty but was gone within 48 hours.

Event at the Swedish Cultural Center near downtown tonight. Award ceremony and dinner (no I'm not up for an award!!). Not sure what the food offerings will be but most likely a buffet. I'm really going to have to be mindful as my sweet tooth has returned with a vengeance lately. I may have to resort again to the No Sugar Policy to get back on track with my tastebuds.

How is school going?

Ciao for now! Cat

It is better to wait for something that feels right than to settle for something you know isn't. You'll make that connection with someone.

It was snowing this morning when I headed to work. I don't think it will be sticking. The roads were wet, the windshield iced over and a dusting on the car but nothing really sticking on the ground even though it was in the low 20's (only supposed to hit 27* today). All this means to be careful on the way home and in the morning and to check out the weather report this evening. LOL

Well, that's frustrating.

I think it's settled down now but people are still excited about it - although we all got sidetracked by our 2nd snow of the winter this past weekend - sure was pretty, but people kind of freak out as it's not a regular occurance.

The parade last week was CRAZY!!! I watched it on my computer at work. More people downtown that day than the entire population of Seattle proper. One of my sons went - it's a good memory.

I'm thinking no more dates with Jan - it was nice, but there isn't really a connection. Better luck next time although my membership with match.com has now lapsed.

Have a good, healthy week!

Problem with printing it is that it takes so much ink and those cartridges are killer (they aren't cheap!!!!). The problem is here with out firewall and they aren't working on it. I asked about it when it changed over a year ago. They had done some upgrades over the weekend and I came in on Monday and couldn't open the secure ebook for my class. We tried from several computers (my bosses, another engineers, my work laptop, my work desktop) with the same results. Went to IT, they told me that nothing had changed and ....sure....right....I just can't open my ebook now. So, I just bring MY laptop and either keep it open or go to the breakroom and connect through the wifi there, open the ebook, then head back to my desk with my laptop. LOL
LOL, nope, a process engineering technician isn't classy. I'm a glorified gopher that runs experiments and collects data for my engineers.

Has it settled down there now that the big win is a week past?

Our technology crawl here is very slow. They blame it on infrastructure funding but really, you have more PhDs here than probably anywhere else!!! Anyway, hope they can get it sorted out sooner rather than later. What if you printed it and scanned it into another pdf?

I couldn't image you didn't work but couldn't remember you saying what you did. I have no idea what a process engineering technician does but it sounds pretty classy :-)

I'm sure the overenthusiastic revelers will have hands slapped accordinglyy. Nice that you can work on your paper at work, at least that's something!

A secure .pdf is locked and has to authenticate through wherever it is locked from to open. In my case it has to communicate with the GCU servers and authenticate my user ID and password. Yes, I work full time as a process engineering technician and have the online graduate classes that are basically full time school as well (each class is condensed to 8 weeks so it's pretty intensive). I have talked to both my IT guys here at work and with the IT people at the university and there isn't much that can be done. The university is slowly working on making everything compatible to various platforms and keeping upgrades on the established platforms updated.

I'm a San Francisco 49er fan so I was pulling for Denver. I just turned it off. It wasn't a competitive game and I had homework to get done. LOL

I can understand being excited for a home team winning a championship, especially when the region hasn't had a champion in a long time, but,BIG BUT, there is absolutely no reason for destruction of property. Hopefully, culprits were arrested and dealt with appropriately.

Back to writing a paper.....(slow day at work).

Hi Chole,

Hmmm, I bought a Kindle Paperwhite a bit ago and it has the option to upload pdfs, haven't ever tried it though. I wonder why secure pdfs don't work, does that mean they are locked somehow? I wonder if you talked to your professors if they could make it easier for you. I would think graduate school would be overwhelming. Do you work as well?

I don't know how you read and walk at the same time. You are much more coordinated than I am although I remember doing that walking to middle school many decades ago lol.

Yeah, the game was so exciting. It was probably the first football game I've watched from start to finish in 30 years. We turned it on just to see when Bruno Mars (he rocked) halftime show was on and then didn't move as that first touchdown happened so quickly. There were big celebrations that night with thousands of peeps gathering downtown up to all kinds of highjinks including some some property destruction and couch burnings. I mean, come on people. My son went down and said it was WILD! Tomorrow there's a big parade downtown welcoming the players back - wonder if there will be tickertape? I believe its the first championship won by a Seattle team in like 30 years.

OK, back to work, I've been setting off the spark tracker almost every night the past 2 weeks and the scale still isn't budging. Sheesh...

Have a good one,

I am trying to work movement in. Two more years waiting isn't a good plan or option. I can sometimes work more steps in and it would be SO much easier if our ebook text books would open on the ipad, an Android phone, or a Kindle. Then I could walk and read. They are secure .pdf documents and won't open on an iPad, my phone, or my Kindle so that leaves my laptop (the firewall prevents it from opening on my desk too so I log on at home and just leave it open when I come to work so the .pdf book stays open on the laptop).
I just didn't appreciate the added reading load for graduate school. As an undergrad I could go walking on a mile circuit when weather permitted (not too hot and not too cold). I could get my reading done pretty easily. I am just having a hard time with the amount of reading and no portable method to take it with me walking. This means either I don't get the reading done or I don't walk right now...until I find an alternative. I'm still looking and trying to find something that works for me.

Congrats to the Seahawks for winning the Super Bowl. I was hoping Peyton and the Broncos would win but after the second turnover for a second touchdown for the Hawks I turned off the game. LOL

I hope you're not saying you're waiting for 2 more years to get back to moving?! How about walking - can you add more steps into your day somehow? The Smart Tracker has been a fantastic motivator for me.

We northerners are great at "layering" our clothes. Kind of like onions - prepared for whatever mother nature brings us. Right now it's rain and upper 40's with low 30's/upper 20's at night. At least it's staying lighter a few more minutes every evening.

Ciao!

Great job on the loss AND the exercise.
I am a slug. I hope that when I finish school I can get back into the habit of exercise of some sort...movement of any kind, really. LOL
Yep, I almost didn't grab my coat this morning but weather is so unpredictable I figured it was a good idea to put it on.

Whew, 70! Bring out the tank top :-)
I'd be excited too - hope the weekend works out great.
I'm back down a couple lbs this morning - the past 4 days of an hour or so exercise each day have paid off!
Have a great day,

Okay, so we have been below or barely reached freezing the last week...today it is supposed to hit close to 70 then start getting back to more "normal" 40's and 50's through the weekend.

I'm excited, Kandice is coming for the weekend (crossing fingers that nothing comes up with the kids between now and tomorrow!).

Yeah, the news this morning said that people were having to sit out the night last night in school buses, cars and trucks along the freeways in southern cities. Did you see "The Inconvenient Truth"? My mind keeps flashing to it. They were in the 60s in parts of Alaska yesterday.

I think what I am looking forward to the most when I complete grad school is sleep! I think I could sleep for a month right now. LOL

The weather is really strange. My niece and her husband were headed to the house. My sister went and got the grandkids a few weeks ago. They were coming to TX to get them. They ran into snow and bad roads before they even got out of Florida! They got a hotel and are trying again today. Hopefully the route they are taking is open now. I am crossing fingers that they are since they both learned to drive in FL and neither one of them have much if any experience with snowy/icy/slippery roads.

The saga of the water leaks continues..... emoticon

Wow - you have to hang in there for almost 2 more years. But won't that be great to have those degrees!!! Sounds very marketable.

The weather does seem like a roller coaster all over the country. One of the fun things about SP is hearing weather reports from around the country. Since most of the people I converse with are on the "more mature" side it can be more of a hardship with the aches and pains related to cold weather.

Lunch was good but too short and felt rushed. I'm trying to be a good listener but honestly it's difficult for me to remember details about people. I hear so many stories that it's hard to keep them straight. I like her, and we share interests, I'm not sure I'm attracted to her though. She's smart - got her PhD in women and gender studies (!?) just a few years ago - it took her 14 years!! She doesn't have a dog (big plus), and lives close to me. I think energy wise we are similar but I have only seen peeks of a sense of humor, but that could be initial nervousness. You're right about rushing, I'm not doing that this time but I also don't want to wait forever as was the case in my last few almost relationships. I'm just not one to take action, too afraid of rejection I suppose. I got a note this morning from another website that I forgot I was on (cupid) from someone who was interested but lives too far away - and when I was there I saw I had another e-mail but from way back in October from someone that sounded really interesting with actual Buddhist leanings. But she had in the meantime cancelled her profile. Too bad, wish I had paid attention sooner. Not meant to be.

OK, back to work.

Hi Cat.
Good to hear from you.
It is nice when work slows and you can breathe a little.
Your weather seems to be staying more constant than ours. We can be in the single digits one night and not up in the thirties in the day time one week and the next have lows in the 30's and highs in the 50's or 60's. Crazy! My sister took the kiddos down to a friend of hers that lives down near Houston, I think, and they had snow! First time her grandbabies, who are from Florida, have ever seen snow. It usually doesn't snow that far south. Heck, it doesn't snow much in the Dallas area and that is a few hours north of Houston!
So, was the second lunch date a good one? Fun? Just take it slow and see what happens. I think sometimes we tend to rush things relationship wise.
You will get back on track and lose what you found. This is a lifelong program for most of us and it is natural for weight to fluctuate up and down in a range. I'm not saying to ignore or discount it but to just remember that fluctuation is normal and natural.
Okay, my degree...or should I say degrees. I am working on a dual master's, an MBA and an M.S. in Leadership. 22 months to go if I don't take a break. LOL

Wow, hard to believe Texas is having that kind of weather. What a winter the U.S. is having. Except for here, we seem to be in a bubble of moderate weather. Feels almost like spring, a lot of fog and I've seen camellias blooming but still down into the 30s at night (boo hoo, right!).

Had a 2nd lunch date with Jan yesterday. We'll see what develops. It's hard on such a limited amount of time, the next step is to do something outside work.

Work itself has slowed down quite a bit. Good to get caught up on the backlog and also do some personal business. I'm lucky that I have that flexibility at work.

Your classes sound extremely difficult to me Chole! Good on you! My bus is full of university students and professors and sometimes I hear long convoluted science and math discussions. It's like a foreign language. Remind me what degree you are going for?

I've added a couple pounds over the past few weeks. Very disappointing as I creep back up to 190 when I was so close to 185. I've set off my Spark Tracker all the way on Sunday and Monday so I'm trying to get it back together again. I had a bad spell of sugar cravings (and not resisting). Maybe hypnosis would work. If I could only have 1 or 2 cookies, instead of the entire package. My stop button seems to be worn out.

OK, stay warm and healthy out there all,
Cat

How's it going out there, ladies?
It is a bit chilly here. We got down to the single digits last night, it is still only in the mid teens and it is creeping up on noon. It's not so much the COLD that is killer....it's the WIND along with the COLD! It creeps into your bones!
About 10 more days of this Economics course and then I am on to Quantitative Analysis for Management. Sounds SO interesting and fun, right? LOL

Check in! I'm doing a roll call. Everyone is just WAY to quiet right now (not just in this team either!).

So, on a cruise the price is for each person in the cabin or suite, right?

Hi there ladies! Happy Tuesday…

Chole – that was indeed frustrating but out of your control. I understand about the tossing and turning part – but I’m sure you’ll catch back up. Like the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!!!

An Olivia cruise is something you should try if you can. I went twice with my ex-gf, the first time to the Virgin Islands (AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME) and then the 2nd time to the “Mexican Riviera” (Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucus). I had never been out of the U.S. before. Definitely a calorie challenge with the food – everything is so good and since it’s “all inclusive” you don’t have to shell out $$$ everytime you eat. It was so much fun and so beautiful – both the people and the scenery. They have a payment plan you can do which can work out for those who don’t have the income to pay all at once (or as in my case I was fortunate to have a wealthy partner lol).

Hope everyone is having a successful, healthy day.
Ciao for now,
Cat

You've given me an idea for something to think about to celebrate graduating in a couple of years, JANIEK13. A cruise, or maybe another trip to Morocco!

A frustrating night. I was just starting my homework last night and the internet went out. I sat on hold with the provider for almost an hour (after the requisite turn of the modem, router, reboot computer, etc. with no connection....which you could see with the blinking "online" light on the modem was never going to happen!). The girl was very nice but told me that service was out and they were not sure when it would be back on. Emergency crews were working on it and about half the city was affected. Nothing to do so I took a long hot bath, read some on the kindle, and, of all things, headed to bed. You would think I would be rested today but I tossed and turned because I am late getting yesterdays assignment in and have a team project I was going to do the research on and post my part last night. LOL
I think graduate school is going to kill me!

Hi Powerpuffgrl!

match.com has the largest membership and is the most active, although there are bunches of other sites that seem to be interconnected - if you sign up for one, you get e-mails from another so that can be confusing. That probably wasn't too much help but good luck out there!

Good job on the loss, Cat. You are keeping it going and that is a good thing.

Sounds like you met some great people on that cruise. I would like to go on one some day. Hopefully you can make the get together and reacquaint yourself with your cruise mates!

Maybe pink sofa or match.com?

Although this is a singles group I am no longer single. I was when I joined but met someone a few years ago. I enjoy talking with everyone here and, at the time, the group was very active and I had met several of the group.

I know what it is like to be in an area where it isn't easy to meet women. I live in one that isn't the greatest. It may be better for younger women but not so much for the 50 something. LOL

I hope this is not off topic but since the group is called Lesbian Singles, I thought you might have an answer! As a newly single lady who lives in an area where it's very difficult to meet someone I was actually thinking of resorting to a dating website at some point in the future (!) any recommendations? A friend mentioned gaydargirl.com but it doesn't seem that active.

Happy Sunday,

Always fun to make vacation plans. Houseboat or beach rental both sound awesome - anywhere near water is a true vacation in my book, hope it comes to pass for you.

A friend I met on an Olivia cruise back in 2010 invited me to a get together house rental thing in Denver in August. She's a big traveler with lots of expendable $$$ and keeps inviting me to join in on group trips I can't afford. We did have a reunion with some other shipmates in Chicago where she lives 2 years ago - what a blast. She also sent one for Great Britain next month - yeah right - but this one may be doable.

Happy to be .5 lb. down for weigh in this morning. Getting close to 185 - lowest I've been in 15 years. Time to get out for some cardio and maybe some strength training with Nicole on the laptop when I get back! And yum, that salmon for dinner. Don't know what I would do without seafood :-)

Peace friend,
Cat

You can keep the salmon, and any fish or shellfish for that matter, I am highly allergic. LOL

Glad to hear that the pressure is off and the work is done...for now and until next time. Sounds as if you have a good plan to get back into the normal routine. And you got some good sleep!

Talked to an old room mate last night. We reconnected on FB this past summer. We lived together for about a year when we were in our 20's in Mobile, AL. Then came home one day and she had decided to move back to St. Louis. We kept in touch, would fall out of touch, reconnect, and cycle this way since back then (I moved to Mobile back in Aug of 1980, we started rooming together sometime in '81, so, a while ago. lol). We lost contact some years ago after my dad retired and they left the Mobile area. It was good to reconnect and Kandice and I went up for a short visit this past summer. Debbie asked if I was interested in going in with her, another friend of hers, her nephew and his long time bf on a beach rental in Destin, FL in September or there abouts. Sounded good to me. Talking last night they are still throwing around ideas and maybe a houseboat rental on Lake Powell is another option. I explained that a lot of this will have to do with timing and my classes so if they get it nailed down and give me a timeframe then I will be more able to say yes or no. Then there is the financial aspect of splitting costs. Destin is definitely less expensive! Maybe Lake Powell when we can book earlier? Right now the options are for late in Sept that are open and up that way you have to be careful of snow! Okay, so I'm the only one that lives where snow isn't a normal, shrug your shoulders, kind of thing in the winter. I live in TEXAS! Yes, we get snow but it normally isn't very much or very deep and it generally goes away within a week when it does happen if its not gone in a couple of days. LOL
So, maybe a vacation trip later this year. Kandice going is probably not an option since there is no one to keep the three kids for 10-14 days (travel time has to be included).

Anyway, not much happening. Just trying to get through the economics class. Guess I need to see what is next in line. Wonder if it will kick my butt as much as this one is doing. LOL

Have fun, have a great walk, take it easy and have some you time to get back into the swing of the routine.

Hi Chole!

If you graduate to 3 alarm clocks I'm really going to worry.

I have flexible hours too and took advantage to the max during this past 3 weeks. Whatever time I went to bed I set the alarm for 8 hours and didn't get up until then. Of course that made for a few days of getting in at past 10 but hey, I was working on days off as well.

So WHOOO HOOO!!! We sent the grant to the feds via UPS at 3:30 yesterday afternoon. I was so sleepy I could barely keep my eyes open. I think my body knew that the pressure was just about over. Totally on auto pilot trying to not think about what we might have missed.IWent out to celebrate with some of the team - splurged with a patty melt and a really good gin and tonic - time tested sedatives! Asleep by 8 and up at 8 - so feel really good and wondering what I'm going to do with all this free time this weekend!!! First is laundry, then catching up on Spark posts, personal e-mails and some housework as well as going out for a nice long walk in the fog. I"m glad to have my life back again after 3 long weeks. But I have to say I enjoyed the challenge and teamwork.

Haven't been on the scale in a few days, curious to know but waiting for Sunday morning weigh in. Need to do some cooking to have healthy meals on hand starting with salmon, quinoa and some greens. Then some type of chicken in the crockpot.

That's all for now - hope you're having a great day!
Cat

I try and have mine before around 4 pm but it doesn't seem to matter much if I have it or not these days, I am ALWAYS trying to stay awake. I am pooped. LOL

I actually slept through the first alarm yesterday. The "emergency" alarm went off and I thought it was my "time to get up alarm." Yes, since I am so tired I have started using two alarms just to make sure I get to work. Thankfully, I have flexible hours most of the time!

Hope you are having a great week.

Hmmm, much better chance of getting the IV. Although I find the more coffee I drink the more tired I get, caffeine interferes with my sleep big time. I just try to cram it in before 1pm.

So, heavy sigh of relief! The leak wasn't under the slab, it was in the wall. Omar came out, found it and repaired it for $275. So, that is my grocery money from Friday's paycheck (I had mom write a post dated check on my account). I have got to figure out what I am going to do for the next couple of weeks to eat on the cheap. I also have to get food for the Assassin Cat and the Insistent Stray. Insistent Stray will have to have the real cheap canned food. In the winter I give her foods with higher fat content, summer she gets the dry stuff Assassin Cat gets. I would adopt Insistent Stray except she has claws and I do like my furniture and there is the fact that I would love to find someone to take Assassin Cat. I really don't have the time to devote the attention to either of them like they deserve. In any case, Insistent Stray (she was actually abandoned when a lady moved out of the building next to mine!) will not starve. If I could get her to my back porch she could have a warm cozy sleeping cage that is insulated but she runs when I try and lead her back that way.
Anyway, have work to do today and am trying to prop the eyelids up with coffee (was working on yesterdays assignment until around 2:30 this morning).
Have a great day!

LOL, happy you enjoyed the post, Cat. I don't often spew out a lot like and just needed to let it all out. No offense taken at all. I am still waiting on the estimate and for it to be found what the problem is. It may not even be under the slab after talking to my sister and father but that remains to be seen. They got a water key and have just turned it on when necessary. The guy couldn't make it Sat or Sun but is supposed to be out there today. If he doesn't show then the guy who uses him on his crew to do repair work on houses (he flips houses in the Dallas area) will get with him and GO with him. Add my 2 and 4 yo great nieces to the mix and probably the son of the fiancee of the niece who lives at the house and not only is it a house full it is a house full without water!
Hope you had a great weekend. Mine was okay. Took a "rest" from homework but have to catch up on it now. Weekends are hard for me during football season and now that my 49ers are in the playoffs I just HAVE to watch them. LOL
Anyway, staying quiet at work so I can do homework. LOL

I think we are psychically connected. I was answering other Spark Mail and you popped into my head seconds before your post appeared!! Your vent has POWER!

God bless you. I feel your pain. Not only do you have financial stress, you have the stress of dealing with your precious old parents long distance and your sister as well who needed you to vent to. Not to mention the worries that go along with the "joys" of home ownership.

Hope you won't be insulted but I'm still laughing as it was such a tidal wave of information. The way you express yourself is delightful :-)

My fingers and toes are crossed for you that everything works out to your benefit. Guard your head, breathe, and stay committed to your healthy goals! Keep me posted.

Sometimes I really hate homeownership! At least when I'm not living in the blasted home. Got a call a couple of days ago from mom. She said there was a leak and that dad said he thought it was under the slab. Can we say "head-desk, head-desk, head-desk"? The just weren't sure what they were going to do and they had someone coming out to turn off the water at the curb. I asked her to call my insurance agent and let them know what was going on and see if it was covered, etc. Well, if it is a leak it is covered, if it is old pipes it's not. {begin prayers that this is a leak and not old pipes.....} I asked her if she got any references from Stacy on who might be able to do the work...no, she didn't think about that. I tell her to call around and get prices on getting it checked and estimates on the work. Back to homework I go thinking they will be able to handle that. Fast forward to yesterday morning. My sister send me a text, "can you call me or are you at work?" I was busy so I didn't respond right away. A few minutes later I get a FB messenger bubble on my phone, "call me!" So, I get where I can hear and call her. She is on her way to FL to get the grandkids (hers) and bring them back for a visit. Apparently mom is driving her nuts with the "don't know what to do's" etc. She literally talked for 10 straight minutes then said okay, now you can talk. My sister had given our parents a name of someone to call that she got from a friend. It's $20 just to come out then another $150 per hour with an estimate of 1-3 hours. My folks are retired and on a fixed income, they don't have $500 laying around. I live 6 hours away and pay rent and a $1k mortgage every month...I don't have $500 laying around. I remembered that an insurance agent I talked to about six months ago told me he flipped houses down there in the DFW area, so, I give Len a call and leave him a message with the basics and would he please call me. He called yesterday afternoon. I explained the situation and he said he is happy to help. He said he would get in touch with his guy, Omar. Len called a little while ago. Omar is heading to the house tomorrow to find the leak and give an estimate. He is doing it for FREE! {the prayers are working so far...just hope they keep working and this is in the wall not under the slab!) After talking to dad yesterday afternoon to let them know that I might have a line on someone reasonable to come out and find the leak and give an estimate he told me he didn't know where it was and that it MIGHT be in the wall. {much more FERVENT praying now, praying for it to BE in the wall!)
So, just got off the phone with mom. I asked if they were going to be home tomorrow. "Well, I don't know. We probably are." I told her, "No, you ARE going to be home tomorrow. I have a guy coming out to check the leak and give an estimate...for FREE!" She agreed, they would be home tomorrow waiting on Omar.

Okay, I think my vent for today may be done.....

Chole – sounds like a good plan, hope you can make it work soon.

Sorry I’ve been out of the loop! Enjoyed your tattoo story – seems like I’m the only one in Seattle without one – there doesn’t seem to be a "type" any more. My younger son even has a Star Wars Tuscan Raider on his calf. If I ask why I'm only showing my age.

And sorry to hear about the knee – ice and elevate– and try not to snack too much!! Those things can take a while to heal. So Kandice is your gf’s name? Lunch with Jan was good – we’re planning on doing something else in the week to come. No sparks really but lots in common. I’m old enough to realize that sometimes the sparks take a while longer to get started these days.

My schedule at the gym has been pretty sad – a huge work project has me working 12 hour days and days off. And this is the time I really need to go to relieve some of the stress. Have been doing a lot of walking though so not a total slouch. I joined a challenge to walk at least 2014 steps per day in January. Weight is back to a low of 188, think I may have left the 190s for good – I’ll be really excited to get to 185 in the next month as that will give me 20 lbs. lost so far and ONLY 30 more to go! Son moved to an apartment last week so I’m adjusting to cooking for one again. I miss him but the grocery bills are way less.

Hi Resa! Wishing you all good things in 2014! Hope you join in here.

Later!
Cat

So, the first week of 2014 is in the books. Much of the country is having sub-zero temps and we have had single digit lows and not even reaching 32* highs the last couple of days. Graduate studies are progressing. Silver lining is sleep deprivation lasts for only 24 more months and then I have two masters degrees. Downside...the 24 months of sleep deprivation. I have "resolved" to continue my search for a job in the DFW area and move back into my house. Mom and dad need someone near and they are already in my house and my sister is looking to move back to Jacksonville. I am also tired of paying a mortgage AND rent, but then, I've been tired of that for a long time! Moving back to the DFW area does several things for me other than being in my home. I will be near friends and an hour closer to my gf, not to mention I'll be able to go to Scarborough Faire for the season again! All in all, I am staying busy. School takes up much of my free time so I really want to work on getting more time with the gf and friends to help unwind and keep me from going completely stark raving mad. LOL

How has the first week of 2014 been treating all of you?

The thing about the tattoos started a few years ago.
My gf was in Germany. I was supposed to go to my parents for the holidays and my sister and niece were supposed to be in FL with my sisters other kids. Mom and dad were up visiting friends in AR and the friend had a mini stroke. They decided to stay up there for the holidays leaving me as odds. My friend, Amy, invited me to her place for the holidays. She wasn't getting together with her family until the next week due to her sister and BIL's schedules.
I showed up on her door step with a bottle of 10 year tawny port and asked her where she was getting her tattoos done these days. We both ended up getting inked and we started our "tradition" of Christmas Ink. We went again last year and I went alone this year since she didn't have the $$ after buying the house a couple of months ago and still working to get furniture, etc. all done.
I don't live down there and my tattoo guy is down there (I learned the hard way to not trust just anyone to put ink on you...I have a cover up that needs to be done! lol) so I wasn't passing on the tradition when she could get hers done any time when she has the $$. If we are together and I have the $$ then I will get one of the others I have planned.
I have a fair amount of ink but it is all under my clothes. You don't see it unless I am in shorts or don't have a shirt on. LOL Many people are surprised the first time they see me in shorts. Guess I don't come off as a typical person to have tattoos. LOL

My knee is really unstable right now from twisting it then going down. I am being very careful. Most of the time it feels like there is an inflated band around it. Naproxen is better for the pain but ibuprofen is better for the inflammation so I am taking that. It is the inflammation that does the damage. Wish I had some hydrocodone!

I know how that sizing up thing goes and it IS stressful. Before I met Kandice I met someone here and so when we met it was much more relaxed after going back and forth in a forum for months. LOL It was never exclusive but it was fun while it lasted. Then, she got serious about someone else and I had met Kandice. Kandice was easy. Sparks kind of happened the first time we met but I was cautious for various reasons.

I am not sure what Gail will do. She has deactivated her spark id for now. I know that she is trying to make some changes and to get her cabin done and the computer tends to get in the way of those goals. Also, she is staying with her daughter, either now or soon, until the baby comes. Then she will be staying with her to help out until she gets settled in with the new kiddo.

I hope you and your housemates had a great New Years eve. I had the 1st off and took yesterday as well. Came in to work today and will have the weekend. LOL My NYE was uneventful. Had Netflix running and was playing World of Warcraft. Now, back to the grindstone with school work!

Your daily challenge sounds like a good one. I may get one of the SPAT's after my knee decides to act right. LOL I think it will be a good motivator especially after hearing your experiences with it.

Yes, all the best for a healthy, happy year in 2014 everyone! May your dreams come true...

I hope Gail comes back too! We'll keep it going in the meantime. I am feeling pretty much back to normal. Went to the gym yesterday - not quite back to 100% energy level but it felt good. I'm working on a new challenge - at least 2014 steps per day in January - that's like 63,000 for the month. Thank you legs and feet, I didn't realize how hard you're working for me! It's easy to get in 6,000 that makes my tracker light up all the way around on days I go to the gym but on the others it's an effort in determination to get in even the 2014. I have to get up during the work day and walk for about half an hour.

Damn, sorry about the faceplant. That's cruel. Hope you are feeling better. You sure had a busy holiday and you lost me re the tattoos. Sorry you and the gf can't be together more, do you have plans for moving closer? Did you buy the house together?

Nothing much planned for tonight. Joe is moving out tomorrow and I'm pretty sure he has plans with the gf and friends tonight so it will be me and my housemates just trying to stay awake until midnight!

Had a first date at lunch today, someone I met on match.com. It went well but not sure if we really clicked. Time will tell. It's a little nerve wracking sharing past history and sizing the other person up. She's smart and works here at the UW. Maybe....

Later!

Hi Cat.
It is down to me and you. Gail has a lot going on and is focusing on getting all that stuff done. I don't know if we will see her back or not.
I hope you are feeling much better. I have been out and about. Spent a couple of days with my parents. Went to friends place for another couple of days. Did the traditional "Christmas Ink" that we usually do, but alone this year since she bought a house a couple of months ago (she is not the happiest with me since it is "our" thing but I told her she needs to catch up! I don't live there so I get it done when I can. LOL). Amazingly, all the tats are covered unless I am in shorts. LOL After a couple of days there it was off the gf's for a couple of days. Fell flat on my face at her place around 5:30 Sunday morning. We had been out at IHOP and I hit a rut in the dark, knee twisted then gave out and down I went...faceplant in the front yard. Needless to say, I am sore! Got home around 12:30 am and hit the bed so it wasn't too bad.
It sounds as if you had a great holiday.
Talk to you soon!

yoo hoo! Anyone out there?
Hope you had a good Christmas - it's always so weird that day after, so much activity built up beforehand, and then poof, the wrapping paper is cleared away and it's over! Although lights will stay up for another few weeks.

Didn't go too far off healthy habits even with the few cookies had after dinner and half a beer. Mostly I just cooked all day, on my feet from 9am to 8pm and only logged 1500 steps on my tracker. So much standing around involved in cooking and I'm feeling it in my hips today. The family unit seldom meets as a group so it was fun to feel that connection. It's my 2 grown sons, their dad, and my brother. I'm definitely outnumbered! When the boys dad and I separated 15 yrs ago we decided to remain amicable because of the boys, we don't see each other more than once or twice a year but keep in touch with emails to share news of the kids. It works.

Anyway, hope to hear from you. Can't believe 2014 is right around the corner!!!
Cat

Hi all,

Hope you're doing well in the final ramp up for Christmas Day. Only 2 days left!

I came down with a bad cold this weekend and feeling a little overwhelmed today with no energy and lots left to do. Weather is dark and rainy so that doesn't help my motivation to get out and finish up shopping. I tossed and turned all night last night coughing and sneezing and then overslept past a breakfast date with a friend. arghh...

So glad I did almost all my shopping and decorating early this year, even both boys commented on how "christmasy" the house looks this year - I love the lights and the new little silver christmas tree - very sparkly!

I've been practicing buddhism officially for almost 20 years now.

OK, think it's time for tea and a nap. Best,
Cat

Wow, a two week break......dang, Chole, you're not gonna know what to do with yourself, having all that **free** time. LOL Hope you got your stuff mailed out, I have one card to send and that's it for me. I did no shopping whatsoever this year, I am doling out money to everyone for the holiday and bowing out of the festivities entirely, I am looking forward to it. Frees the kids up to do whatever they need to do with other family, etc. and gives me a stress-free holiday, for the very first time in my life. I am psyched.

Hope your son has a safe and uneventful trip home, Cat, enjoy your visit with him to the max. The b-day party sounds like fun, and how cool is a 3-D snowflake? I kinda like that. LOL How long have you been Buddhist? Hope you got your stuff mailed, too, and good job re: the gym, that's great. And LOL to the hanging out with octogenarians! I say, you go, girl....the important thing is that you have people you love and who love you to hang out WITH, and age is just a number, right?? Enjoy your vacation next week.

I've been busy. Daughter is off work now for three weeks so she's kept me busy. Went to her U/S appointment with her today, all is well and they made her a nice DVD with the pics on it for her to keep. Didn't much care for the tech who did it, tho....he was an older fella, I'd estimate him to be around my own age. First thing he said as Mandy climbed up on the table was, "You're having this done today 'cause you're old." LMAO He was about as tactful as a mud fence and a bit arrogant, but she got all good news so all's well that ends well. Then had the twins' Christmas program this evening to attend, it was really cute and got to see Trav's mom, haven't seen her in awhile, she's doing well. Gonna spend the rest of the eve just hanging around the house and reading and probably checking out FB to see if my sis has written me and hopefully, nothing will pop up tomorrow that I need to do. Have a good weekend, everyone, and happy holidays all 'round in case I don't get to post again before then!
