I am looking forward to reading and discussing the book for December. I have it on order from Amazon. I joined this group because I have something called (abbreviated) PTSD. One of the things it has prohibited me from doing is reading any fiction at all. I also don't watch movies or fiction television unless it is something that I have seen every episode of, and find nothing threatening. That means Mary Tyler Moore reruns, Golden Girls, M.A.S.H., and my mind is drawing a blank, emoticon but one of the best television series ever, with Rob and Laura Petry.

I have improved, sort of. I cannot get enough of Criminal Minds and Law and Order: SVU. I know why I am drawn to them. I love the profiling, the psychology of the two programs, and the closeness they have to what caused my PTSD.

Sooo, now that I can watch a few fact-based fiction programs, even if it is to learn, I think that, with the help of this group, I will be able to start reading fiction. I've never read anything by "popular authors." As a child I read mostly classics, with Dickens being my favorite author.

I plan to be involved in the discussion of the new book for December. I am excited about it.

Hello and I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday!

Congratulations on the weight loss over Thanksgiving Dede! Very impressive!

It was so nice to have all the kids home for the weekend and now back to the routine.
I did alright and stuck mostly to my plan. I did get my workouts in and that always makes me feel good.
I finished War and Peace and I must say I am glad that I read it, but with all the translation and historical references, it was all a bit distracting. Good story, as I said glad I read it, just as glad that I am finished:)

I don't think I have ever read a John Grisham book, so looking forward to it.
Love the new profile bear Glory- very cute indeed!

Have a great evening

Edit. Edit!! HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY GLORY!!!!! emoticon

Hi! Glory and others,

My Thanksgiving was nice. We were at my daughter's so no food here for leftovers when we got home. YEA! I carried finger foods such as celery, carrots, and raw broccoli and was able to actually see the scale go down by a pound!! They took me out walking after lunch so I got my exercise, too, as I walked off the one piece of pecan pie I'd eaten. I'm so excited to see 149 on my scale for several days in a row. Haven't seen the 140's in several years!

I know what you're talking about when you describe the blah feeling after getting out of the healthy lifestyle. I had done that the weekend before Thanksgiving and didn't like the way it feels.

Hope you enjoy this last day of the long weekend with your family!

Good morning!

Hope everyone enjoyed the 4 day weekend. My husband, 2 of my children and I all have off today. So it is a 5 day weekend! Hope to get some holiday decorating done!

I have to confess I did not stick to my holiday game plan. I ate a little too much on the deserts and leftovers. Fortunately, the food is out of my house. Today, Monday, I am starting back to my healthy eating. Honestly, not eating healthy I felt tired and a bit irritable. I need to stick to a good diet. I feel so much better and I have the energy to exercise. That is the other thing, I did not exercise at all during the break.

Well, having said all of that . . . I am now letting it go and starting fresh today. It is a beautiful day out and I plan to walk my pup for at least an hour.

How was your Thanksgiving? Were you able to stay on track? Were you able to keep up with your exercise?

Is anyone going to take advantage of the cyber Monday deals?

Have a great week!!! emoticon emoticon

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with blessings, family, good food and fun! I know I ate a little too much. Today I am back on track, counting calories and will fit some exercise in somewhere. Did anyone take advantage of the Black Friday specials? I went to Walmart and picked up two laptops for $198.00 each. My 3 daughters came with me so we had fun! Made a new friend waiting in line!

I did the tally for our December read . . . DRUM ROLL PLEASE . . . and the winner is:

The Litigators by John Grishman.

I hope the extra time allows everyone to get their book by December 1 so we can read together.

Have a great week!

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to give you a heads up that I have posted the list to vote on our December read. It is in the "Monthly Reads" forum below. Hope to wrap this up quick as some people would like to pick up a copy of the book on black Friday or cyber Monday! Looking forward to our December book and discussions! Have a terrific Tuesday!

Michele ~ I am off today waiting for the heater repair person to arrive. I think it is warmer outside than inside. lol Thanks for asking!

Thanks for the encouraging words everybody! I guess we all need to hear them at some point. I admit, I was really down on Saturday. I woke up Sunday morning and thought, why am I letting someone else's opinion of me define how I live my life? I got up with so much more energy and a positive attitude. It always surprises me how much our own self-talk affects whether we have a good or a bad day. So, back on track!

I think volunteering at your local library is a great idea, with the state of most city budgets a lot of part time positions are being cut, I would think they would jump for volunteers to help out!

I did my shopping for Thanksgiving dinner last night, I got most of the recipes I am using from SparkRecipes, so if I can control my portion sizes, it shouldn't be too bad emoticon !

I LOVE that this is a 3-day work week!! Hope you all have a great day emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hello Everyone!

Travel L- you keep going girl. I think people who discourage us on our journey are a little envious or insecure because we have decided to do something positive. This is a change not only for you but also your friend and sometimes, friends like us just where we are, it keeps everything the same and safe. She'll get used to it and don't EVER be embarrassed by the beauty that you are!

Michele~ your Holidays sound like mine and where in Washington does your daughter go to school? My 3 girls are 3 hours south and actually one is in England so she won't be home til Christmas. My son is in AZ at a sports academy, but he will make it home for Thanksgiving. It will be lovely, but different.

K~ Big change, but I am glad that you and your husband are hopeful. A new opportunity awaits for sure!! Good for you not turning to food:)

Glory~ I am a library nerd! I am actually thinking about getting a volunteer spot at our local. I used to do this when the kids were in elementary school and it's just recently dawned on me that I should see if there are any openings.

Tomorrow is Monday already and I will finish my Thanksgiving shopping!

Have a great week everyone and thanks for all the kind words on the 5k!!!

Dede, thanks. That's kind of how we're looking at it. He was miserable where he was. They treated him like crap, the manager would harrass him. So we're hoping that by losing that job he'll be able to find a much better job that he wouldn't have found if he was still working there.

Sorry, K, about the job loss. This is a tough time of the year for such. It's good he will have a temp job in the meantime.
Congratulations for not turning to food. You can get through this and may even look back years later to see it was a turning point in your lives for an even better life.

Hello everyone! just wanted to take a few minutes to pat myself on the back. Last week has been extremely challenging...my husband lost his job. Right before Christmas (and all 3 of our daughter's birthdays are coming up!) Despite the emotional rollercoaster, I did not find refuge in food! yay! I usually eat my emotions so I'm extremely proud and so glad I stayed on track! As for the job situation, his dad is giving him work with his construction company until he finds another job.

We are getting our house ready for Thanksgiving, so lots of cleaning/shopping/organizing this weekend. I'm so excited to see my son! He has been about 5 hours away living with my brother while going to school. Unfortunately, my daughter can't come home because she has to work the day after (she goes to school in Washington state about 8 hours away) and my Mom is in Arizona for the winter, so won't come home until Christmas. The rest of our family will be here, so it will be a bittersweet day for me...

Jessiebelle-Hope you get the book soon-it's a quick read, so you might still have time :)

Cathy-I also LOVE the library! I resisted getting a Kindle because of it, but my husband got me one for my birthday and I have been downloading FREE books only-lol! Also, I found out I can get kindle books from the library, but have to do a little more research into how it works. And great job on your virtual 5k's! Do you sign up for a challenge on SP or just do them on your own?

Gloryandme-That is so frustrating about your heater! Hope they get there soon to fix it! Are you all staying warm enough???

DeDe-Sounds like you are having a fun and busy weekend!

Travellighter-Great job on the 5k! I have never done one-real or virtual, but you are an inspiration! Sorry to hear about your experience with your friend. Even though it hurts, I try to remind myself that people who judge me are really not happy with themselves and are looking for things to criticize in others. It doesn't always help, but it is often true. And speaking of truth-the TRUTH is you are special, precious and beautiful no matter what size you are! And the TRUTH is you are making changes to get healthier. And the TRUTH is you can come to your sparkfriends anytime to get encouragement and support-we are here for you!

interesting about how that guy lost weight. Yes we can be addicted to food (or use food to sooth oiur feelings) and I agree I need to find something to "replace" food. not so much as an addiction but to occupy my mind

Thanks Cathy, our team did really great! We raised close to $300 and all did the 5K together. It was a beautiful morning and really nice to be with so many people working for a cause.

Unfortunately, this Saturday morning was not as great. I went out to breakfast with a friend I hadn't seen in a long time. She gave me a disapproving up and down glance and started talking about weight issues right away. I hate how I let things like this undermine my efforts. I felt so devalued and discouraged, and instead of going for the walk on the beach that I had planned, I came home and hid all day, feeling too embarrassed of myself to go out.

I know I am making positive changes, but I think the next one needs to be not letting what other people think of me derail my good choices! I hope everyone has a good weekend!

Good morinng!
I had such a busy Friday I barely had time to check in. This morning we woke up to a freezing cold house . . . our heater is on the fritz! brrrrrrrr Can't get anyone to come out until Tuesday. I will try and make some lemonade out of those lemons . . . by reminding myself you burn more calories trying to stay warm! lol

Cathy ~ Thanks for reminding us again to use our local library. I was able to check out "The Peach Keeper" from there. Hoping to do the same with our December choice. Great job on the 5k. Since I have joined SP, I have walked/jogged 3 virtual 5k's. I like that my competition is myself and I keep trying to do a little better each time.

Read an interesting article today about a man who lost 376 pounds because an emergency room doctor said to him, "What do you want your obituary to say?" That was what turned his life around. What hit home with me was that he said he was addicted to food so he needed something new to get hooked on. He made walking the family dog, a German Shepherd, his new gig. If it wasn't for my shepherd, I would still be sitting on that couch! So if you have a dog, you have a walking buddy for life! Walk, Walk, Walk emoticon

Have a great weekend! What does everyone have planned!

Wow! Lots of cleaning going on in this group!!

Good for you TL regarding your walk! How did your team do? Just being there must've been the best emoticon

I like the idea about finding a book early too AND remember your library ladies!! I live in a smaller town and I have been able to find all the reads there so far and without too much waiting emoticon

I finished my second virtual 5k today. I took 3 minutes off of my last time, so that was amazing! Then went out to shovel, shovel and shovel the snow that has been falling for the last two days. Sort of altered my plans, but it's also nice to have a day off that you know you really aren't going anywhere!

Enjoy the weekend emoticon

I put a hold on the November book at the library and I'm still waiting for it. Hopefully it comes before the month is over. I'd like to read it. I've never done a book club before so I was interested in talking with other people about it. If not I guess I will wait until December.

I have read the Hunger Games trilogy, I like the 1st one alot, the other 2 were just "eh" IMO. I heard there was a movie, but didn't know the trailer had been released! I definitely have to go check that out!

Hi KSanders17,

I like Twilight too! The books better than the movies, but I love Robert Pattinson emoticon LOL! Have you read The Hunger Games Trilogy? I just saw the trailer for that movie (coming out in March) it looks fantastic! I used to think it was silly to read YA novels as an adult, but I have met tons of people who do, and the stories are really good emoticon . Enjoy the movie!

Good morning everyone!
The tornado came through my house too lol! Off from work today so hoping to clean it all up. Rainy here today . . . was hoping to get in a 5 mile walk with my pup, but not sure that is going to happen. Will try and get to the gym tonight! Thawing out some chicken for dinnner. Am going to look through the spark recipes and try something new. Hope everyone has a great day.

Exercise, drink plenty of water, count those calories. Your body will thank you!

P.S. ~ I am thinking we should be ready to post the thread for what book to read in December as it seems most of us have finished "The Peach Keeper".

Good morning! I cleaned my house up this morning while my internet was out. We got busy yesterday too and the house looked like a tornado zone.

K, you can think of the extra arm workout you will get by holding the baby. I know its not fun. I did my workout today with my 1 y/o clinging to my leg. But then I try to remember to enjoy it because I can't get my older boys to do anything with me.

I'm going to make some crocheted bookmarks to give with presents for Christmas. Have a great day everyone! emoticon

Good morning team! Whats everybody got planned for today? I was so busy yesterday, my house looks like a disaster today, so I'll be spending a good portion of today cleaning! Sometime today I gotta do my 3 miles on the treadmill, which is really hard for me to do with a clingy 9 month old!
Anybody else a Twilight fan? 2 more days! Eeeek! (that's my inner 13 year old showing through)

Happy Monday morning!
This weekend I led a team of walkers for the Step Out walk to Stop Diabetes Walk, the first time I have ever had the guts to do anything like that! I am so proud of myself, and so grateful to Spark and all my Spark friends for all the encouragement and motivation. It has been really surprising to me that I am looking forward to earning my fitness minutes this week emoticon ! It really helps that my husband is starting to join in.
I hope you all have a great week!

I pureed and froze pumpkins this morning. Hopefully have enough to last the year. Made zuppa toscana soup. Mmmm. Put together a new vacuum. I can't believe how much we needed a new one. Watching a movie this afternoon.

My Sat. afternoon will be spent working at CTHH, a hospitality house for families of offenders at the state prisons in a nearby town. We have a rest stop for families waiting to visit their loved ones who are incarcerated.

Hi everyone!
Weekend is here. What does everyone have planned?

Like I mentioned earlier, I am going to AC, NJ Sunday to Monday. Maybe I will win a few bucks at he casino. Now, wouldn't that be nice? Keeping my fingers crossed.

Cathy it is a fun destination. Like your parents my mom loves going with her friends and her church group.

Michele let us know how the bridal shower goes? Will the bride be surprised?

Happy weekend. Stick to your goals. Your body will love you for it! emoticon

Mary, If I really want something to eat after super I usually try having a cup of coffee to take care of my craving. If you don't like coffee late at night though my mom has always said to have a cup of hot chocolate. If you make it in water it's not many calories and you can get diet or sugar free or just regular. Get a chocolate fix and fill your stomach with something fairly low in calories.

I read the article and liked it too. I don't think it's enough to get me to clean up that much though. However I find that if my counter's are cleared off I feel much better even if the rest of my house isn't that great. The counter is the first thing you see when you walk in my house so I like having that area organized.

Good day everyone!

I agree with you Mary, I think the extra energy is the key. I had my son help me with some yard work yesterday and it's been there for a bit and I just felt like I could keep going. I was awesome and we are ready for winter! As far as snacks have you tried the special K crisps? They are delicious if you are looking for a sweet something and only 90 or 100 calories. Fruit is always good too! An apple or my favorite, a pear, with a teaspoon of nutella or peanut butter- yum;)

Glory- have fun in Atlantic City! It's my parents favorite place. When we were first married, husband and I saw Mike Tyson fight there.. it's been a while!

I have been working the 3-11 shift the past three nights and tomorrow I am off. I plan to clear out my laundry room to Michele. Catch all is a great way to describe it and we have many, many shelves in there, not to mention the actual laundry, so it will be nice to get that cleared.

Have a good weekend and remember a Veteran today emoticon emoticon

Loved the article! As I exercise more I am wanting to get my house "fit" also! I think that having more energy from exercising and eating better is making me want more from my environment as well.

I am in need of help though. I an an after-supper snacker!! HELP! I need suggestions to curb the urge to snack. emoticon

It only takes a spark, to get a fire going!

Good morning! Hope everyone has a fabulous Friday. Don't forget to eat plenty of freggies! We can call it "freggie friday" lol
My DH and I are both off from work today. Hoping to get a few things done around the house. This Sunday I am going to Atlantic City, NJ, overnight with my daughter and sister. My daughter's birthday is the 15th so she wanted to go. I am looking forward to getting away overnight. The casino we are staying at has an indoor pool and hot tubs so I can't wait to take advantage of that.

Michele ~ bridal shower . . . such fun! Very nice of you to host. Lots of work involved. Have a great time! Hope your husband is feeling better!

Happy reading and sparking!
