Hello everyone. I'm Tina, 25 and finally ready to admit that I need a little help with weight loss. I've been a vegetarian since 2006. In the past I lost 50 lbs by myself and kept it off for some time. About 3 years ago I started to put some weight back on and now I have gained it all back plus 10. I know it's because I have an unhealthy craving for carbs/sugars/snacks and have a hard time with self control/limits. With some inspiration, motivation, and encouragement I know that I can finally beat the "fat monster" for good.

Hi, my name is Mari and I have been eating vegan for exactly a week now. The parts I'm enjoying are the added energy/no food hangovers/no morning brain fogginess. The parts I'm struggling with is all the food prep...feels like I am constantly making food. But with that all being said, I have effortlessly dropped 3 lbs this week and feel great!

Hello everyone! I'm brand new at the whole vegan idea. I have never even considered it really. I recently read some things I found very unsettling about the food industries. I have a daughter with a lot of health issues and it seems a lot of it can be our at least could be linked to her diet. I would like some info on how to get started on going vegan. I would like to lead by example and help her and in turn I'm sure I will benefit as well. I suffer from migraines also and I read where that is also food related. I would appreciate any advice and info I can get. I don't know how to start but I am very serious.

What you eat in private you wear in public.

Hi everyone!

I'm relatively new here, and I just became a vegetarian about a week ago. I've found myself gravitating towards vegetarianism for years, but every time I've tried it, I've eventually given into a craving for meat. This time, I'm following the Sparkpeople vegetarian meal plan; I'm hoping that the beans, fruits, and veggies on this plan will help me stick with it.

And for anyone considering it, I think the meal plan is great! Almost everything that I've made this week has been very tasty. Has anyone else used the Sparkpeople meal plans to learn healthy vegetarian eating?

Greeting! My name is Stefania and I have been a vegan for about 6 or 7 years now. I never went through the vegetarian transition but just completely stopped eating animal products. It has been so easy for me but has been so difficult to find healthy vegan options while in college.

Welcome to all of you!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon THe best advise I have - use the trackers religiously every day even when you are sick, even if you think you have gone over and are upset or ashamed of your self. You will find you probably are not doing as bad as you think you are and that the next meal is easy to etay on track.

My name is Tonya Smith and I just returned back to be being a Vegetarian working on becoming a vegan. It been almost a month since I started back and I am enjoying it. At first I thought it was going to be hard because my Husband, Children and all family members are meat eaters. It is not though because I have found creative ways in making Veggie Burgers using different kinds of spices (mainly Dash products). Why did I begin my journey back to Vegetarian because I watched a Documentary called Vegucated! It showed somethings that they did to animals that I did not like!

Hiya everyone, my name is Angela I have been a veggie bordering vegan for about 18 year's now so I have been keenly checking out Spark Recipes and even if they are meat I can adapt them easily. It's a lot better for us veggies now than it was all those year's back when I first started-out on my veggie lifestyle. There is so much more choice around today which is great because then I have the option of cooking from scratch or buying shop ready meals (low fat) although some you have to be very wary of as they have a high fat content as well as salt.

That is my only bug-bear really is a lot of manufacturer's and shops still think us veggies have cheese with everything!

I have learned over the year's about using spices instead of the usual garlic & onions there is so much more open to you when you use spices and herbs.

Anyway, I am glad there is a veggie forum on here. Best wishes to everyone with your goals

I am new to vegetarianism. My daughter was a vegetarian for about 10 years, but after she was out on her own for a few years, she started to eat meat again. I know all about vegetarian menu planning, nutrition, and have lots of recipes. I just used them for my daughter, not myself.

What is motivating me to try this is a book by Dr. Neal Barnard, Power Foods, that lays claim to saturated fat as being a major cause in the development of Alzheimer's. My mother has that disease, so I got interested in the prevention of it.

I can't drink milk any more due to lactose intolerance. I do eat too much cheese. I want to cut that out due to the fat content. I like eggs in the morning since they seem to keep me full all morning. I would like to change that to lower the fat and cholesterol in my diet. So, it's entirely possible that I will be a vegan if I decide to continue as a vegetarian. It's hard to say. I might eat some fish since my husband is a master fisherman.

I'm looking forward to this adventure. Chances are that I will find myself a flexitarian - if I understand what that is!

Hi Everyone! My name is Grace! I just came back to Spark People to get back on track, but I have been a vegetarian for quite a while. I gave up red meats about 10 years ago, but still ate chicken and turkey until about 2 years ago. Since then I have been meat free, and have no plans on going back! Anyways, just wanted to say hi :)

Hello! My name is JJ, and I am new to the vegetarian lifestyle. I decided to go vegetarian to lose weight and get healthy, as well as there has always been a special place in my heart for the wellbeing of animals! So far I have felt great taking meat out of my diet, and I hope to continue my vegetarian diet for the rest of my life.

I have to say hello because you have THE BEST user name ever! It's prob not very helpful to say that I don't use the meal plans because they are difficult to adjust. I would bet there are people on this team who have done so successfully, however. I just do what I know and religiously count calories and exercise. And set a series of smaller, sort term goals on my way to the big one. Good luck and keep us posted!

I went ovo-lacto vegetarian Dec 4 '95. I've had high cholesterol on and off for the last 10 yrs and battled lactose intolerance for about 5 yrs.
At this point, I have just given up and gone vegan.
I am new to Spark so I haven't figured out how to adjust the meal plans yet.

I used to be an "unhealthy" eating vegetarian and now am wanting to get it in gear and be a healthy nutritionally sound vegetarian.

One thing I have done in the past is eat the same foods over and over and then I am not willing to eat them anymore even though they are good for me.

So, I really need to learn to be a healthier vegetarian. And I am not a great cook. I have made some wonderful salads following recipes but need help with continuing onward with this goal.

All meal planning toward lacto-vegetarian would be most appreciated.

Hi!
My name is Teresa, and although not a true vegetarian/vegan have for the majority of my life been satisfied mostly with fruits, vegetables, and other protein sources. I landed on this team unintentionally when I was re-setting my goals. It looked interesting and I thought I would check it out. I am always looking for new and creative ways of eating healthier.

Hello, my name is Sarah, and I've been a vegetarian for over a year now. I do still eat dairy (eggs, milk, cheese, etc.), and I VERY ocassionally I'll eat seafood (but then I feel guilty about it). I am a huge animal lover, and I hate the living conditions and treatment that most of the livestock in the U.S. suffer through.

I just joined Spark People today. I would like to lose 20 lbs. and then maintain my weight. I would love to be healthier and more energetic, and above all I would like to have more confidence and self esteem.

And as a side note: while using the Nutrition Tracker, do you guys keep the default protein settings (60-136), or do you reduce it? And if you reduce it, what range do you use?

Hi, my name is Lorie and I have been a vegetaian on and off since high school (Iam 37)and have been completely for the last 4 years. I am doing the switch over to veganism currently. I don't eat any milk or eggs and haven't for over a year. But I do ingest products that contain these items. I am working on ridding myself of cheese and so far it's been 3 days! Cheese was the hardest thing for me to give up and I think it's because I have been really strict with myself by not replacing with "fake" foods. I don't want to replace something with an unhealthy version just to "get over it". I believe that it is just a mindset and I will be there completely without a doubt. Meat was super easy for me to give up because I am a visual person with an overactive imagination and I was totally for animal rights. Anyway that is me and I hope to get to know some of you and share some really great tips and ideas!

Hi all, my name's Pam. I've been a member here for years but only now found a place where I feel comfortable enough to introduce myself. I've been vegetarian for a year and have been transitioning to vegan-ism for the past several months. I always thought being vegan was so extreme and that I would never be able to give up cheese and eggs....guess what? Not as tough as I thought. It's like being veg. has opened up a whole new world for me. I love to cook now, I'm eating foods I've never tried before and I just feel so much better about myself. I'm going to be 57 this year and I'm finally figuring out who I am.

Hi all,
I'm Larissa. I've been a vegetarian for about five or six years now. I'm try to eat a little better (clearly), for a large part of my being a vegetarian, I ate a lot of rice and grilled cheeses. Not the healthiest diet. I've acquired a few vegetarian cook books recently and am excited to try some of the recipes in them, as well as the recipes listed here.

Hi I am new to the team. I used to be vegetarian and even vegan for a long time then I found out that I was allergic to almost all grains and dairy. So i eat meat now but still eat a lot of vegetarian and vegan foods. And I was dairy free part of last year but then started eating cheese again and am now trying to quit.

I am trying to learn how to make recipes that normally would call for cheese and make them with out and how to substitute it out.

Hi everyone~I'm Renee. I've been working really hard to change my eating habits over the last year. I've tried to cut out meat before & got sick but that was probably because I wasn't eating healthy in the first place (this was before my weight loss journey). Now I've been cutting out mostly all meat-think it's been 2 weeks since I had any actual meat and I've cut way back before that. I'm making black bean burgers etc... to replace the meat & that is going totally fine. Even use it for wraps, tacos blah blah. But I have a lot to learn still & finding healthy vegetarian meals when out is not always easy in this area-everything is meat meat meat or really fattening junk. Hope to learn & find some support as we transition from meat eaters to vegetarians. I would also love to cut out as much eggs as I could but haven't figured out how to really do that yet in our diet. Guess I will learn. emoticon

Hello! I'm Jessica and live near Athens, Alabama. I'm a freelance writer with a husband who is a truck driver. I've been on SP for a while now, but have recently (about 3 weeks) decided to go vegan. 5 years ago, give or take, I weighed over 350 lbs. Ironically I lost 200 lbs on the Atkins diet... just about as opposite of vegan as you can get lol. About a year or so ago I began changing the way I ate purely based on what I really WANTED rather than dieting, dropped another 40 lbs, and realized I was "mostly vegetarian" already. Like others here Forks Over Knives pushed me right over the edge!! At 144 lbs and 5'7 I'm now at a healthy weight/BMI for the first time I can remember!!! My goal weight is now less than 20 lbs away, however I am not really focused on that so heavily anymore, perhaps because it's not a dire necessity any longer LOL. However, I look better than ever, have more energy, sleep well, and wake up refreshed before my alarm rather than needing a POT of coffee and 2 hrs to wake up!! I do confess, I am still drinking coffee, albeit it's the 1/2 caffeinated and I am weaning myself down... I really REALLY like coffee :-/ I am an avid exerciser and hate it, but I still put my time in! I've focused more on strength training now since I now have that "skinny fat" thing going! I love my size, just not so fond of where it moves depending on my position! (You know, when you roll over and your tummy looks like it's melting onto the bed? Yeah, that's me.) I do believe I will be satisfied when that stops and I can lay down without having my breasts try to hide in my armpits!!! I just realized how long winded this was but frankly so am I. My daily social interaction is normally a one sided conversation with a very spoiled Maltese.

Mandy!

I wanted to thank you for the awesome tips you gave. I love these kind of documentaries, I have seen most of them but there were a few that you mentioned that I watched that you mentioned that I really liked! So thanks again!!

Hi Genny!

I'm new to this lifestyle too. For about a month now, I've been mostly vegan (minus a little bit of fish and the occasional milk chocolate). I can relate to you because I started out this journey with watching Forks over Knives, and then, for about a week, in all of my spare time, I did nothing but watch every other related video on Netflix too. Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead was excellent! It motivated me to start juicing again, I can really really tell a difference in my energy levels. Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS on your healthy changes!! I think we'll be so rewarded with all of the MANY healthy and wellness benefits, as well as just feeling great about the positive impact we're having on the animal population and the environment.

Regarding you feeling like an outsider with people you know and getting so sick of their comments, there is a REALLY good podcast you might want to check out called Vegetarian Food for Thought (also a website by the same person called Compassionate Cook). She has one podcast that specifically addresses how to answer people about your dietary choices. I think it was on May 25, 2012. I'm also having a hard time finding a community, and certainly not a local one, so I'm trying to connect online. I hear that meetup is a good way to find local groups, but I live in a small southern town and am not too optimistic.

Best wishes on your lifestyle!! Hope you're having fun finding new recipes!! Two great websites for recipes, if you haven't found them yet are:

www.ohsheglows.com
www.chocolatecoveredkatie.com

Oh, and one video that is GREAT, in addition to the netflix films, in a youtube video called either 100 or 101 reasons to be vegan (if you're interested in it).

Take care!!

Hi!

I've been vegetarian/mostly vegan for about three weeks now. Mostly for health reasons... I saw "Fat Sick and Nearly Dead" on Netflix, and that turned into watching every documentary available (and even pirating Crazy Sexy Cancer, shhhh). Twelve pounds lost later, I'm really happy with how I feel and how my body is now allergic to weight. I really want to be part of a community of veggies, I feel like a bit of an outsider explaining my choices at work and at home. If I hear "What do you eat?" one more time from someone shoving McDonalds in their face, I'll break something.

Anyhow... Here I am!

Hi everyone. I'm Mimi, I've been on SP since the beginning of January and I LOVE it! Keeping my trackers current and exploring articles, teams etc. has become one of my favorite parts of the day! Last Summer I turned 40 and took a good long look at myself and realized just how far I'd let myself go. I've been working hard ever since. I still have a ways to go but I can honestly say this is the healthiest I've been in years and I'm feeling really good. I have a tendency to become numbers obsessed so I'm working REALLY hard to focus on all the other benefits of regular exercise, clean eating etc. and NOT freak out when the numbers aren't just rapidly dropping. I've been a vegetarian since childhood for various reasons. However, in the last couple years I've struggled with several different vitamin deficiencies, iron being one of them, so I've added eggs, certain fish and occasionally turkey bacon to my diet, but I still try to get the majority of my iron from non meat sources. I also take supplements and now that my levels are rising it's MUCH easier to find the energy and motivation to exercise! I am SO happy to have found this team and I look forward to getting to know you all better and hopefully forming some close connections. Blessed Be

Hi all, I'm Cathy. For years I've been eating less and less meat, for both health and ethical reasons. I'm currently listening to Dr. Fuhrman's book "Eat to Live" which has convinced me I seriously need to eat more vegetables if I want to age well! Having just turned 40, that is a huge motivator for me.

Hello my name is Helen Husband, my goal is to lose weight and become a Pescetarian which is the practice of a diet that includes seafood and excludes all other animals. I prefer Pescetarian which is a person that eats fish, shell food, dairy, nuts, vegetables, fruits, grains, eggs, and beans. I feel I can handle that right now; hopefully one day one year I'll become a vegetarian. Right now I'm doing a Daniel's fast for two months with a friend to cleanse myself and pray on getting ready for my new way of eating healthier and keeping the weight loss off.

Hi, my name is Ed. I'm 29 years old, and I've been a vegetarian since I was 10 (I'll post the story in the "why did you become a vegetarian?" thread; it's a good one). Problem is, I never really had anyone telling me what I should replace the meat in my diet with, so I gained a lot of weight. Yeah, I know, everyone thinks vegetarians are skinny! I was actually diagnosed with diabetes recently, but my doctor says that it should be reversible if I control my diet and get more exercise.
