Hello! emoticon

My name is Melinda. I'm 28, new to SP (just signed up yesterday) so I'm still trying to figure things out. But Ive been a Vegetarian since HS (age 14)
My challenge has always been being a "good" vegetarian ie, making sure to eat the right foods to get nutrients etc.
So I am working hard to make sure that while modifying all of my eating habits, I am also including making good vegetarian choices that will eventually become habit!

Hi!
I'm Sheri, 27 year old ovo-vegetarian. I'm a new mom of a sweet baby girl (Gabriella) and I've lost the majority of my "baby weight" and just want to drop the last 15 or so pounds I have left.
I'm a music director at a high school and always on the go with the groups I teach.
I look forward to participating with this board as much as I can.

I'm new here, I found this site thru WW. I'm a Transitioning Vegan 2 weeks and going strong...I feel great in this new lifestyle I wish I would have done it sooner. I'm also doing Weight Watchers I just made my 10% and have 64 pds to go. I have noticed that being veg. has helped my drop weight, while I'm supporting a great cause. I do not miss animal products at all. emoticon

just realized that i never introduced myself. i'm lynn, and i've been a vegetarian for around 10 years, and actually have always been interested ever since i was little. i'm borderline vegan; cause, unless it's bread (or mindless snacking, which i'm working on day 2), then i NEVER purposefully choose to consume dairy/eggs. guess that's all, peace.

Ive been a vegetarian since 4/07. I thought it was going to be hard since i loved meat. but one day i saw a Peta video and it completely changed my life. I think its so unnecessary to eat meat when its not really needed. My husband is currently deployed since January so i am a bit nervous at how he will adapt to this new lifestyle. I will not force him but i hope he can compromise.

Hello fellow veggies! I am new-ish to SP but brand new to the message boards. I am 21 years old and have been a vegetarian for most of my life (since age 5). I am getting fit for college graduation in May 08.

I am newly vegetarian. After my son was born 4 months ago I opted for a new lifestyle and since my S/O was already eating vegetarian I decided to join him and have been doing so and enjoying it as well.

Howdy all,
I've been around SP for a month and still tinkering about to find out all the good stuff. Finally got around to checking out the groups!

I'm 28 and I live in Los Angeles. I've been vegetarian off and on for nearly 10 years, each for a variety of reasons and went back to meat those few times mainly for lack of education being a healthy herbivore. This time around I want to make it a permanent change and it's my goal to make sure I'm meeting all my nutritional needs, and that of my family, with new recipes, etc. to keep being vegetarian interesting, fun and fulfilling. I always feel better when I'm not eating meat anyway, and my weight loss is always much easier when I get my protein from other sources... although the getting protein part is a bit of a struggle at the moment. I'm not a full vegan at this point but I think I'm headed that direction. I have a weakness for cheese. I thought I'd be able to keep eggs in my diet for a little while as I transitioned, but very quickly my body decided it doesn't like eggs and the consequences of eating eggs after a long hiatus were not so pleasant!

So anyway, I'm here and can't wait to dive in and get started!

Ciao!
~emily

Hello!
Hope you guys do not mind my being a member here. I was a lacto-ova-vegetarian all my life. Now, I have to eat fish and sea food to care for metabolic syndrome and idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension which supposedly are linked. I am hanging in there till a new drug will be introduced in the US from Europe for research trials. Its still extremely hard for me to eat seafood due to the smell. But, I am doing my level best since my meds for metabolic syndrome interact wit IPAH! Enough boring stuff! I love veggies and love to cook! Looking forward to contributing some simple and easy yummy recipes along with learning from all :-) emoticon emoticon

Hey. I'm Vanessa. I was a member here a few months ago, but I decided to come back and start fresh, (mainly because I forgot my old username) I'm a 6-month-old vegetarian and a new vegan. Also to anyone who is interested, I started my own team, Skinny Bitch, based off of the book. It's basically about living a healthy vegan life-style. I could really use some new members, and I feel like this is the perfect place to ask.

Hello!!

This is my second day on SP, and I love this site!! I never thought I was going to make it down to such a healthy weight, but I believe I can do it now with the help of this website, not to mention the support of so many people in the same boat as me.

I have been a vegetarian for 7 months, and I am happy and proud to support my cause, regardless of what people and and don't have to say.

If there is one thing I have to contribute, it's the glorious joys of morningstar and their soy chick strips, especially on salads. If you are new to the cause and still have that meat craving, I highly suggest these soy-based goodies!!!

I've been an on-again-off-again vegetarian/vegan for many years. Right now on again, hoping to make it last. I also eat a raw diet, though not always 100% (for example this week when I got sick I ate some crackers and drank some gatorade). : )

Hi there- I have been a vegetarian since I was 11 or so. I just didn't like meat. I shuddered to think about eating animals. Though I am not Vegan, I don't like milk or eggs, though I do eat them as ingredients. Since I am a veg, I find myself eating waaay too many white starches and junk food or healthy foods and baaad, bad dips.

Oop... I almost forgot. I won't be able to make it fellas. Veronica and I trying this new fad called uh, jogging. I believe it's jogging or yogging. It might be a soft j. I'm not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.~ Ron Burgundy:

Wanted to intro myself, as well. I have been a vegetarian for 14 years. This year it was my goal to become healthy, and I've done a wonderful job so far! I'm up to running two miles a day plus 3 workouts a week. I have gone down a pant size and am feeling good! I joined SparkPeople so I could continue on. I joined this particular team because being a vegetarian has been a challenge for me over the years with nutritionist or Weight Watchers or whatever. They don't really luck us. So I would love some support from you guys! Thanks in advance! emoticon

Hello there,
Just introducing myself. Happy to see such a community here. I was raised a vegetarian and have been since birth (now 25 yrs) and have a heart for the lives of animals, for God, my husband, international cuisine, cultures and the environment. So quite the mixture. After reading The China Study recommended by John Robbins on his website and my parents later (another SparkTeam member mentioned his book Diet for A New America - I'd also recommend his film by the same name, very powerful) my husband and I have been heading in the dairy and egg-free direction as well recently, so I guess that'd be vegan, but not in the totally conscious decision sense, but in the 'oh let's just not bother with buying any cheese' sense, and see what we come up with. :) Tyring to gain a flat, nice looking stomach section in time for our 2nd wedding anniversary in a few months. :) So that's all for me I guess. It's nice to be here.

Hi well I joined this site 3 days ago and I find it incredible. There is soooooo much info, and the fact that there is a vegetarian option on here is awesome. I have been a vegetarian for the past 2 yrs. Although, prior to that I only ate chicken and seafood. My son(5) has been vegetarian 2 yrs as well and my daughter is 2yrs old so she has never had meat.

Fellow veggie lovers,

My parents raised my siblings and I as vegetarians (check out Diet for a Small Planet - Francis Moore Lappe - for their inspiration), so I have 25 plus years of vegetarian goodness. = )

I was a vegan for 3 years (after reading Diet for a New America - John Robbins), and returned to strict vegetarianism last year.

I joined spark people in March, and am 15 pounds into my 25 total weight loss goal. Hurrah!

Hola,
I joined SP about a week ago but just got my page going today. I've been a vegetarian for about five years although I do eat dairy and some fish. I'm trying to live more healthily and lose some weight. I've started running and lost a few pounds and already I feel so much better...more confident, healthy and I have a lot more energy.

Good evening,
I just joined I've been vegetarian since I was 11 or so. I don't like eggs or milk, but I still eat honey and fish on occasion. In college with the meal plan it was almost impossible. In Japan, where I taught for a year, I could not eat anything I did not make myself.

I'm glad I found this group to answer questions and share information.

Hi, I just joined this site today. I've been a vegetarian all my life. Occasionally I eat cheese, yogurt, or eggs, and I'll eat stuff with cheese, eggs, or milk in them. But I don't use eggs or milk products themselves on a regular basis. I usually use soy milk, like Silk or a similar brand. So I guess you could say I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian who leans in the vegan direction.

I gained about 20 lbs. in college and have gained about 15-20 lbs. in the four years since college, and I'd really like to get rid of the extra weight. I decided to join this team because I want to be in contact with other vegetarians who are trying to lose weight. So many programs have recipes or meal plans with meat in them, and those obviously don't work for me.

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this site and am seriously contemplating the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. I was a vegan for about 1.5 yrs many years ago and felt healthier and did not have any weight issues - unlike now. I actually don't like the taste of red meat and usually consume chicken or salmon, but due to the ethical implications I feel that it may be necessary for me to plunge into the vegan lifestyle. I want to make an educated decision and really need some yummy recipes to get me on my way.

Hello everyone. I have only been a member for a few days, but i'm having a great time checking out the site. I have been a vegetarian for as long as i can remember. I find it very challenging to try to become vegan. Sometimes I wonder how anyone can do it..there are so many hidden animal products..its tough. I choose to be vegetarian for the reasons of enjoying a less violent diet, and for health reasons. I'm so happy to find a vegetarian group here :)

Hello, all! I've been incorporating vegetarian and vegan meals into my daily diet with the intentions of eventually becoming Vegan. (Which would be win-win for me being lactose-intolerant).

It just makes sense. I currently subscribe to Veg News and Vegetarian Times magazines and love them both!

I look forward to meeting others already part of the lifestyle and those like me, looking to become a part of this smart & healthy community!

Hello Everyone!

I joined SP about a month ago, and have always been pretty grossed out by the idea of eating meat and having to kill animals to be able to have it on the dinner table. I am sure this goes much deeper than what my mind has wondered to! Even though I am not vegan/vegetarian (YET)!

I decided to join this message board after seeing some posts about it a few days ago and figured it was a really good place to look for ways of improving my diets in many ways!

I look forward to reading past posts and getting knowledge on healthy food from all of you!

i haven't "taken the plunge" yet....but i saw a psa from peta a few days ago and have really been repulsed by animal products since....i don't really understand how it's affected me so profoundly. i am researching vegetarianism/veganism b/c of kidney problems (need to reduce my protein intake) and also for environmental/social concerns.

my husband and i are in the process of converting our house from conventional to "green"

I've been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for more than 20 years now. I became vegetarian for philosophical reasons feeling that humans are too highly evolved to need to eat other animals. I've since come to the conclusion that I might have been wrong about that. I don't generally get the amount of protein I need, but now the idea of eating another animal is unthinkable. So now it is a matter of developing healthy eating habits and making good food choices and food combining appropriately.

Any others struggle with the same thing or have you figured out how to get proper amount of protein without lots of food preparation?

hello,
since 3 years i slowly changed my diet, understanding that dairy products were unhealthy and trying to buy only, good (but expensive) meat.
I'm at the point were the only animal product i have are eggs and sometime a good piece of fish.
And meat, i practically never eat it ,finding no pleasure in it.
So that means no yogurt,no butter, no cheese,no milk,no cream etc...but lentils, tofu, whole wheat grains etc...
I make my bread, my soy yogurts, and i constently look for vegetarian recipes.
Yesterday for example i made for a guest a soy burger. He was delighted.
So even if i'm not a vegetarian, your lifestyle is very intersting to me.

Hello everyone! My name is Michelle and I've been a vegetarian for about a year and a half now. I have to say I'm so thrilled there's a group designed specifically for vegetarians and vegans on the site. I don't have any problems living a life without meat and fish, but I do feel that since I've given up such foods, I'm not eating as healthy as I could be. So, I'm really looking forward to any feedback or advice other members have to offer me.

I'll tell you in another life,
when we are both cats.

Hello!

I'm Teresa. I'm a 27 year old from Lansing Michigan. I've been vegetarian (lacto-ovo) for 8 years, and vegan for just over 1 year.

I'm currently a dietetics student at MSU and am here to spread the cruelty free joy!

Hi. I'm new to Sparkpeople. I was a vegetarian for 30 years and am vegan now, for about 4 months. Since becoming vegan, I've decided to concentrate more on reducing the fat and salt in my diet and getting back into exercise. I've lost 19 pounds and have about 45 to go. I promised myself I'd lose 50 pounds before my 50th birthday in December.

I've found being a vegan pretty easy except when traveling to small towns. If the only choice of restaurants is a chain, there aren't really good vegan options. It's funny that people think a vegan diet is restrictive. When I'm at a chain restaurant I look at the menu and think, "this all looks the same." There is so much variety in a healthy vegan diet!
