I'm new to the vegan lifestyle also and am getting some resistance from some of my family. Most of my family doesn't care what I eat (or what I don't eat) as long as I am healthy and happy. I've toyed with the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle before and it can be difficult when you live with a family that are omnivores however it's doable. A great pc of advice that i have is to prepare some brown rice, beans, lentils, split peas, vegetarian chili, stews or soups, etc and substitute that for whatever "meat" in the meal.

If the family is having chili then make some vegetarian chili also (freeze leftovers for quick meals! :) ) If the family is eating some fish, steamed veggies and rice then have some rice (brown is best!) veggies and a salad (or soup). You can substitute whatever the meat is or whatever stew for a vegetarian option. Grilled burgers substitute grilled portabella mushroom caps very "meaty" in texture. You could also use boca, morningstar or any other brand veggie burgers or meat substitute.

Dried legumes are so cheap! Buy a bunch of bags different varieties, soak and cook. Freeze in individual portions for later consumption. A great vegan LOW FAT crunchy snack is Roasted Chickpeas. They pack quite a punch with fiber, protein, and are low fat low cal. They are a great alternative to nuts though tasty and healthy the fat content is much lower by volume for chickpeas vs. nuts.

last little tip i have is to use hummus instead of mayo as a condiment on sandwiches. Still gives the creamy texture adds flavor also.

A couple more. Trader Joe's also has meatless ground (ground beef substitute), "beef" and "chicken" strips in the tofu area. Mine also has vegan noodles in the same section. If you don't have a Trader Joe's in your area, check them out on-line.

If you drink beer or wine, check out www.barnivore.com . They have an extensive list. You can narrow the search for Vegan Friendly. I figure if it rates "Vegan" it is definitely Vegetarian so it is safe.

I live in the Albuquerque area.

I agree with Ruthey01. Trader Joe's has an incredible variety of meatless foods.
They even carry a vegan chorizo! Some manufacturers call it soy-rizo. Whatever it's
called - Trader Joe's sells theirs for the lowest price. I like to fry potatoes and chopped onions, then add the 'soy-rizo'. It is wonderful in a burrito or as taco filling, too.

Welcome!!

I'm from the Pacific NW, USA. I get a lot of items from Trader Joe's - items can be ordered on-line. They have organic canned beans and even some vegan marinara sauces and the prices are cheaper than other stores in my area. They also have vegetarian/vegan meatless meatballs, breakfast sausage and a Mandarin Orange UN-Chicken. All are their brand. They also have lists of foods they carry - Gluten Free, Vegetarian, Vegan, etc. Trader Joe's also has a seasonal Stuffed UN-Turkey Roast with a gravy packet in it that is good.

I have tried many of the brands of veggie burgers and I like Garden Burger, especially the Portobello Burger, and Gardein Meatless Burgers. For a chicken breast option Quorn (USA and UK) have Chik'n Cutlets, both "naked" and breaded cutlets. Both Quorn and Gardein are soy-free and meat-free. Amy's makes good vegetarian items, the Black Bean Enchilada meal or Vegetarian Chili are 2 of my favorites for a quick lunch. Those can be purchased online also. Pacific Foods has some good soups also. I recently discovered Cuban Black Bean soup that comes in a 32 oz carton. The Field Roast company, Seattle, WA, has a Celebration Roast, 4 kinds of sausage and sandwich slices - all artisan grain "meats" and vegetarian if not vegan.

Hope these help.

Thanks VegFrog. What part of the world are you writing from? Just wondering about the location of your local Sprouts store.

Today is the day that I can make a difference!

Good luck on choosing to go veg!

My advice to you when you're in a hurry: keep your freezer and pantry
stocked with my idea of fast foods: vegetarian refried beans,
tortillas, taco shells, soups, nut butters, veggie burgers, veggie "dogs"
and the like for when you're too busy to go to a lot of effort.
Pick up some "instant" refried bean and hummus mixes at your local
natural food store. I can buy these in bulk at my nearby Sprouts store.

When I have more time I pressure cook a variety of beans and freeze
a portion of them. This makes it a lot easier to throw together a
pot of no-meat chili, hummus, three bean salad or other meal.

Hello, I am not veggie yet but would like to be. I have tried many times before but fall down when I get under pressure or am short on time. I hope this forum will help me until such time as I can be of help to someone else.
