The challenge sounds like a fun one!

And you are only as old as you feel.
I am in my early 50's and I refuse to say I am old and neither should you. We are in the prime of our life.

"On a side note, Terry I love your new Avatar( The Flash). It's pretty neat."

Thanks, Jackie! I'm glad you like it!

It's actually there for inspiration and motivation. I'm in a Spark group for men over 50, and one of us had the silly idea (that would be me!) for us old guys to try to spend this whole year and try to get in shape enough that we could fit into a superhero costume for next Halloween. (It will be a contest, too, but no real award other than recognition for the accomplishment.) It may be a pipe dream, but at least we are exercising at our ages! LOL!!! emoticon

Ruth, good to hear that your doctor likes you being on a vegan diet! My family doctor was less impressed with my changes, but he's kinda old school in some ways.

I'm sorry you are having to go on meds, but I understand totally (since I'm on BP and cholesterol meds myself). I get tested every six months, but I keep hanging on to the dream and goal of losing all the weight I need to and maybe going off all these meds.

Oh, I forgot. There was one ray of sunshine at my dr.'s appt on Thursday. She said that my vegan diet is the best thing I could be doing for myself health-wise. The fact that I have 2 "raw" days a week impressed her.

This was a fascinating thread to read.

Unfortunately, I have high cholesterol. It runs in my family and mine is lower than my siblings but 257 is way to high for my comfort having an aortic aneurysm. My dr. ordered a cholesterol reducing med and also one to lower my bp. I'll get them in the mail in about a week. Then it will be a monthly trip to the vampire for blood tests. Oh, joy of joys! emoticon

Rennagade, I also crave carbs, and especially sweets. I got that craving honest, because my dad has always craved sweets, too.

I do know from experience that when I severly limit my sweets for weeks at a time, the craving almost goes away. It will sometimes hit me out of nowhere with a vengence, though, but if I deal with it in a better way (like eating fruit), it will "go back to sleep" again.

I've just begun my diet again, so it will mean turning away from sweets once again. Wish me luck!!!! emoticon

"flax seed oil can be used in

Good to know, Vegfrog! I'll remember that.

Also, a lady in my vegan group told me that Spring Valley DHA (sold at Wal Mart) and Finest Naturals DHA (sold at Wal Greens) can also replace fish oil. They both have those Omega 3's in the them from vegetable sources instead of fish sources. She also learned that those two brands are the exact same as a very expensive brand called Martek Life's DHA--made by the same company, same thing...just sold under a different name.

Wow, it sounds like you are doing all the right things. Have you discussed this with your doctor? As a nurse I'm interested to know what else could cause this. -Rose

Alcohol consumption also raises triglycerides. Increased fiber in the diet decreases triglycerides.

I also had high triglycerides on my last blood test. The doctor immediatly put me on fish oil capsules (helps lower tri's), but being vegan I want to switch to something non animal related soon.

Triglycerides are apparently both calorie and sugar related. (Rip Essylstein's book says it comes from too many calories.) Too many calories or too much sugar (or as in my case, too much of BOTH!) seems to result in high tri's.

I'm not a doctor, but I suspect that lack of exercise also contributes to it, since one's body is not "burning off" these bad chemicals in our bodies well enough when we don't exercise.

I've yet to have my blood test, so I'm not sure how I'm doing. Like Rennagade honestly admitted, I've also been eating too much junk, so if I were to have the test done at this moment, I don't think it would be very good.

I'm trying to jump back on the exercise and diet wagon even as we speak, so hopefully things will turn around soon.

Have been a ovo-lacto vegetarian for 3 years and just got my annual medical exam results last week. From my blood chem, lipids analysis results indicated normal cholesterol, hdl, ldl but high triglycerides. The doctor prescribed a maintenance medication but I am not taking it searching for a more natural cure. Anyone who had similar case and was successful to lower down his/her triglycerides, kindly share your experience. Many thanks.
