I just take my soy milk, unsweetened, add some organic cane sugar to it, shake well, then add a capsule of acidophilis to it, shake again, and let sit someplace warm for 24 hours... it will separate into curds and whey.. the whey you can use to start other yogurts, as well as for different fermented foods, soups, etc.. it's very good for you.. the curds you can toss in a blender with fruit, or mash by hand.. it's quite yummy..

You can take it one step further, if you season the yogurt with herbs or whatever, then place in cheese cloth, tie up and press for 24 hours to squeeze out more whey you end up with a cross between tofu and soft cheese.. rather yummy!

Here is a vegan yogurt recipe that gets high marks.... (I don't like yogurt so I haven't tried it) It doesn't use a yogurt maker.

I have a yogurt maker still in the box! Time to try it out. Also I'll look for the Uncheese Cookbook. Thanks a lot.

I think that I'll try giving up yogurt and cheese for a month. I've been trying to figure out why my weight loss has come to a standstill. Probably the full fat cheese.

CougarZ4life - Have you tried coconut milk yogurt? I hear it is really good. Also, can you give up the yogurt and cheese for a month? After a month your addiction to it will be gone and you won't miss it at all. Did you know cheese and milk products are addictive? It has been proven to be true. All mother's milks are addictive, that is what helps a baby bond to it's mother. People grow out of needing mother's milk and cows grow out of needing their mother's milk too. Hopefully you can save your life and try to find something to eat that moves you closer to health.

Blessings,
Toni

COUGARZ, there's a whole book about non-dairy cheese, it's the Uncheese Cookbook. Recipes from it (at least some) are floating around the the internet if you want to try.
Soy yoghurt is made the same way as dairy yoghurt: add an active yoghurt culture to the milk and ferment. It's not difficult at all. If it's probiotics that are the issue then there are plenty of ways to get them beyond yoghurt.

Re the topic, I've been thinking about this subject a bit lately. Because I meet lots of people HERE who say "Been vegan a month for my health, amazing changes, already my blood sugar is down and I feel better and etc etc". And I keep thinking why the doctors didn't suggest it to them BEFORE they were a basket case going on casket case? This bit from the article is just so ouch ouch I keep re-reading it:
"As Dr. Dean Ornish has pointed out, we live in a culture where eating only plant-based foods is seen as "radical" or "extreme," but having your chest cut open for a triple bypass or taking lifelong regimens of liver-damaging medicines to combat the cholesterol present only in animal foods is seen as "easy." "
Wow.

Thank you so much for passing on the article. It may sound a little silly, but, I would be vegan if I could find palatable alternatives to cow's milk yogurt and cheese. I'm willing to make my own if anyone has a recipe. I'm also a type 2 diabetic and I would love to be off my meds.

Thank you for sharing this, I have a number of friends who are diabetic, and their docs are insistent that they eat as much meat as possible and greens only.. Like Good Grief!!!
I have sent them this link and shared on FB too.
