I just joined last Tuesday...and I'm really enjoying this site.

I have 5 grown children and 10 grandchildren ranging in ages 16 to 17 days old...4 girls and 6 boys.

We are moving into a 55+ community only 35 mins. from our present home here in IL (north suburbs). My husband strongly resisted maintaining our house of 36 years, our eldest son wants it. So we could not resist. After all I did not want to go into my golden years arguing what to do with the house. And we will be only 10 min. away from our only daughter and 35 min. from the son that lives the furthest.

I have been for a "professional" volunteer most of my life, usually in my parish or and occasionally in political campaigns. I once had thoughts of being a teacher, but I did teach catechism for a number of years to 5-6 graders. Your background sounds very interesting. How was it in China? When I hear of the latest news these days, it disturbs me.

I love to read history if well written (though far from as knowledgable as I'd like to be and to embroider.

Looking forward to hearing from you. I'm at nancyelyn@dslextreme.com.

Hi, and welcome! Tell us about your children and grandchildren if any. My grandson, Chris, 15, just returned to Texas after visiting me in Edmonton, AB.
He was a joy to have; picked up after himself and loaded the dishwasher. My daughter-in-law has trained him well. I have not been around much having left Texas for Canada before he was even thought of. Since then have spent time in lots of places, taught in China 8 years.
Well, write teachermattie @ MSN dot Com or just keep posting on Sparks Love hearing from new people.

My husband was lucky...he almost was sent to Lebanon twice. He was on ALERT and had told me to go back home (IL) if he didn't come back that day.

Even though I just completed my strength exercises and feel good, mentally I'm already saying to myself "ugh, I've got to do this for the rest of my life"! Any tips to get that thinking out of my head?

Glad I can be of help. I think my most difficult thing is to realize I can never over-indulge in cookies, ice cream...chocolate; and the small allowances I do have I must resign myself to it. This is something that I have not maintained. I've yoyo-ed because I thought I could lose and then go back to my old habits. That's fine when you are in your 20s, but not now.

So..I'll be glad to call on you when I get tempted to fall back into my old ways. emoticon

I'm glad you were inspired to come back. April gals are doers...go getters...right? Get back on the wagon. Anyone can have off days. My problem is that I will go great for awhile...for months...and then I fall off for no particular reason. I'll need encouragement further down the line. Hope you all are there.

This is my 3rd day and I'll be weighing myself for the first time about this weekend. For now I'm feeling good about this regime.

Well I have been away for a few days. I was not sure I was going to come back until the e-mail appeared. I see there is a new person just turned 70 in April. I to welcome you. There are several April birthdays on this site. Me for one. I am not doing very good. I can not get past the one week without going off the wagon. Thanks for bringing me back to Spark. I will try and try again.

Your husband and mine were in two different wars. My husband was drafted in 1941 and was in the European theater of war. Germany, Belgium France, etc. He always comments about how very different the Army is today.

Thanks for the welcome Clowny74. At first I wasn't sure that a support group would be helpful. But after reading some of the messages, and putting in my 2nd day of diet and exercise, I'm getting a dose of humility...in the past I always tried to go it alone.

You mentioned your husband having been in the service. My husband was drafted in 1960, 8 mos. after our marriage. He was stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC, with the Engineers; I joined him there after basic traing at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Our first child, our only daughter, was born there. Care was great and our total bill for the delivery and stay of 5 days was $5.00. Can you believe it??!!

Welcome abord Bluegoose. My husband was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan but spent a lot of his army training days in California. I was born and raised in California and have lived here all my life. Between us we have 10 children and thirty-six grandchildren some of whom are great-grandchildren. Glad you found Spark People!

emoticon Hi... I just joined two days ago. I turned 70 in April. I have 5 grown children and 10 grandchildren ranging in ages 16 to 2 weeks. My husband and I have lived in the Chicago area for most of our lives, and we are in the midst of moving to a 55+ community in Lake County, IL. I LOVE to embroider and sew some. About 3 years ago I joined a bowling league and as long as my average continues to rise, I enjoy it.

And I also enjoy following politics and deepening my Catholic faith.

My goal is to reach 137 by 11/17, just before we go on a 10 day vacation.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I attend WW meetings, but even though I have WW E-Tools I like the way that Sparkpeople has set up the menu. Have DH on this plan with me and he has lost 10 pounds so far. He loves his sweets, but he is a very good sport about lossing some weight. emoticon

I know how you feel! Before you shop make a weekly plan of meals. List those foods you will be eating and then follow the list exactly when you go to shop. My husband and I do this every time we go to the store. I make sure I put the foods I need to eat on the list and make sure I stick to the list. The secondary benefit is that we save a lot of money!

Well I hae done my first week and did not do very well. My calorie count stays inside the 1500 but I eat to much of the wrong stuff. My carbs today are out of sight. I just hate this I almost did not log in today. I am weak so weak when it comes to food. I get rid of food on a regulat basis and go out and buy it all again. Boo Hoo Hope you had a better day than I did. Maybe I will do better in the next week.

I did a little of the same. Yes it is hard to figure out how much we have eaten. All I can say is don't give in to the thought you did not do well so what the heck. I do that sometimes until I try to do my shoes or pantyhose and cannot reach my feet without propping them up or pinching my tummy. We are not able to find all things on the food board so I keep a list of my own and it is easier to do. Tack care. emoticon

Well I blew it the last couple of days. There were some parties and of course goodies. Not sure how to calculate such things. Oh, I know if I didn't eat any I wouldn't have to figure the calorie count. It seems to take me so long to lose a pound and so quick to put on two. Did walk 2 miles this morning so hope it will balance out some. Keep on trucking emoticon

Not sure if you are on-line at Spark Bettyanan but thought I would try to meet you. My birthday was in April also. I did talk a walk this morning about 2 mile. I have a sister in Chuma and family also in Albuqureque. I like to visit there. I hope this site is helping you to stay on track. Gets rough for sure. Going to watch my grandson play ball this afternoon.

Hay nice to read all the posts today. I am here in Pennsylvania. Sure can reach out all over the U.S.I am so far feeling better about renewing on Spark. I am staying in the calorie amount so far. I think it seems high so I really must have been way out of bounds. I like walking but seem to be much slower than before. We have Senior games starting August and I do the track and field event. It is some walking and ball tossing. Every little bit helps. Steady she goes. emoticon

It is hot here in Utah also even at 7 in the morning and I refuse to get up any earlier. I have found a Leslie Sansone "Walk away the pounds" DVD I do the two mile in 30 minutes (with puffing of course) and some evenings when I feel really energetic I do the one mile. Surprisingly the one takes almost as long so it isn't as intense. She has a three which I am aiming at for the beginning of August. We'll see. You may want to check it out if your library has it for a test run instead of the hot sun.

I turned 70 in April and have decided to pick-up my walking each week by 5 minutes. I'm from Chicago and since 1997 have lived in New Mexico. So all my walking has to be in the morning before the sun comes over the mountains. Have enjoyed Sparkpeople a lot

The cut in half idea is great! Try having the one slice and tell yourself that you will wait at least 20 minutes before you have another slice (that is assuming that you are not having 2 slices for your whole meal). Most of the time you will find that you don't feel that much like having the second slice. Be sure, though, that you aren't going under 12-1500 calories a day. Good article today on 'normal eating' Have you read it? You'll make it.

Thanks for the reply. I do walk when I can. I go to the YMCA and have full advantage of the exercise machines there and have not used them. I do class 2 times a week. Late afternoon and evening are my downfall. I am trying yto cut my eating down to half. Instead of two bread only one things like that. I just get weary of the whole thing. I am going to keep on as long as I can. Talk again. emoticon

Glad you came back. Don't think about the times you have tried and fallen back except as a learning tool. You could think about what cause the fall back, were you trying to limit your food intake too much? I've found walking to be a great help. It is too hot right now to go outside, even in the morning, so I have purchased a Leslie Samstone (?spelling) tape and walk in the house. She has a 1, 2, 3, and 4 mile DVD. Also I find it I don't deprive myself of everything I like such as ice cream and chocolate I do better. So I allow myself 1/2 cup of the slow churned (less calories) and two little Nestles treasures. Some days, now, I find I can go without the ice cream, of course I count it in with my total calories. Anyway, here's to a new start and making the golden years better. emoticon

I picked you because you are just turning 70. I to made that leap about one month age. I did not like it at all. Just trying to convince myself that I should be better in my eating habits gets harder all the time. I lose 10 and gain it and some more. At my worst just now. Pinching my belly is hurtful. Good luck at Spark. I was here sometime ago and just came back to it.

Welcome to the group. I have lived in Montreal, Barrie and Kingston both in Ontario, and Vancouver.I have a nephew in Edmonton. Today I live in Utah and enjoy the sunshine over the rain. You only have 10 pounds so can do that in a couple of months. I have 100 so am looking at a year or more. By then I hope and expect walking and watching my food intake will be second nature. Although I must admit I was bunged out after two weeks and not an ounce.

Sorry to hear that. However, my experience is that it takes longer than I thought for the weight to start coming off. I encourage you to just hang in there and keep trying. Perhaps you need to look at WHAT you are eating. I found that bread is my trouble food. It stays with me for a couple of days!

The gray and green of Vancouver also got to me after a time. It is one of the reasons I decided to move south and live closer to my daughters.
Feel really bunged today. After two weeks of walking two miles a day and keeping calories under 1500 I haven't lost even an ounce that I can see. Sometimes it doesn't seem worth the counting and effort. emoticon

Hi: I'm new to this message thing but have heard it helps to have others trying to lose weight. I will be 74 in September and need or want to lose 100. Since Jan I've lost almost 20. I think I need to go slowly or will have just yards of loose skin hanging around. I live in Utah but moved here from Vancouver, Canada.
