Hi BeBarb-luckily I've worked for the State for 23 years so my health insurance goes with me at the same rate as what I'm paying now. I have 8 more years until I qualify for medicare. I've obviously got a lot of research to do on this and now I have the time LOL!!
I on track for my nutritional goals today and don't feel deprived at all. I am getting restless and wonder if I can try to do some laundry tomorrow at the very least, and maybe some dishes (I don't have a dishwasher). It doesn't take much to make me stir crazy especially since my groin is feeling so much better today!
Anyone else expecting a foot or more of snow this weekend?

Pam

A little warning about taking early retirement - individual insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions is either impossible to get or very expensive for poor coverage. You can get COBRA for a while but it costs over twice what you're paying for the group insurance at work and once it runs out good luck. Colorado has a high risk state plan that I got on to hold me until I get Medicare but my deductible is very high and there is a lifetime cap on benefits so I'm holding my breath hoping nothing happens before my Medicare kicks in. If you do private contracting without group insurance, you're going to need to work a lot harder to make enough money to meet you insurance needs. If you can go part time and keep your group insurance it would be better.

One day at a time start slow and once you have it under control make another change in your eating routine. You didn't gain it overnight and you can't lose it over night. Keep up the good work.

Slow and steady gets you there

thank you everyone for the warm welcome! Thank you also for sharing your stories. It means a lot to me and helps me to understand what I'm in for. I do want to do things right so I don't ever have to go through this again. Now I'm thinking a month off from work may not be enough but I would use up all my sick time. I will be looking into early retirement-I have 23 years in so it's on the low side but I have enought skills to be able to pick up contract work that I could possibly do from home or at least with a shorter commute.
My dad took me food shopping tonite. It was a little disheartening to read the labels and realize that I will not be able to eat certain foods I thought would be OK i.e soup and salsa for a couple of examples. I was able to make all my appointments and communicate with HR. My dad also helped me take my dog to the vet for his annual. Now I'm exhausted and ready for bed. I did cook a very healthy dinner which took less than 5 min. It was yummy too AND I had enough leeway in fat, calories, cholesterol and sodium to treat myself to 2 cookies and herbal tea.
Have a good nite everyone and I will see you tomorrow.

Pam

I had a heart attach in 2007 and no one could understand why. As I exercised for 1 hour a day 5 days a week at Curves and watched my diet very carefully. I had joined Spark just 2 weeks before the attach and I had been reading a lot on women and heart disease. And from what I read I knew that I was doing the right things for my health. But my down fall was STRESS and caring for my DH and our 2nd oldest son was living with us at the time and he was a big stressor in my life. I was very lucky that it was fixed with a double by-pass. They wanted to put in a stent but I'm allergic to aspirin. I was back to work in 6 weeks. I was a church secretary at the time. So yes this is the best place to start.

When life hands you trouble slow down and stop to smell the roses. Life is so short, live like today is the last day of your life. Enjoy.
My name is Sherry and I am from Erie, PA but live in Ijamsville, MD for the time being.

Welcome I know what your going through. I had a heart attack years ago I was lucky to go
Back to work after 3 months. But I didn't take the warning serious. A few years later I had another they put stents in. .Again I went back to my old ways and then a year later congestive heart failure and lung problems I was in the hospital for 3 weeks. I'm not telling you this for
Sympathy, but for you to understand make the commitment and take care of your health.
Definitely lose weight and do what ever you are physically able to do. I was also forced to take early retirement I know how difficlt that is financially. Your health and well being are important. God bless and the best of luck to you.

Wecome. Glad you're doing better. I got sick a couple of years ago and had to let my job of 37 years go and take early retirement, so I truly understand where you're coming from when you talk about having to cut your budget back.

The best way to see if a team is one you'll feel comfortable in is to read a bunch of its posts. The thing that brings us all together on this team is a need to do those things that will make our hearts stronger and healthier.

There are several heart healthy teams. If you go to the "Community" tab above, click on "SparkTeams" Then in the "Explore Teams" click on "Medical Conditions" and then "Heart Diseases", you'll find a list of health heart teams. Here's a link to that list:

Hi All,
Not sure if this is the right team to join or not. Is there anyone else on this team who has suffered an MI and had to have a stent put in? I'm still kind of in shock and trying to assess my eating and fitness habits and all the changes I have to make.
I am 57 yo and pretty sendentary. I work 2 jobs, one is a desk job, the other is on the weekend and fairly active as it involves standing for 4-5 hours, and some walking around as well as bit of light lifting. My diet prior to Monday was atrocious-lots of processed and fast food, high in fat and probably cholesterol. Klondike bars were my weakness.
I'll be taking 4 weeks off from my full time job and 6 weeks off from my part time job. Not being able to work my part time job is going to severely impact my finances which were worse than tight to begin with but on the bright side my gas costs should be much much less.
I'm looking forward to meeting you all and if there is another team or support group (the search function yielded nothing) I should be concentrating on, please let me know.
Pam
