Hi Charly and Welcome.
We have similar stories. I had a heart attack at 49 and a couple days later triple bypass surgery. With my parents history of heart disease it caught up with me.
I was a heavy smoker at the time and my doc at the hospital told me I should quit. He said that he wouldn't even recommend using nicotine patches to help. He said nicotine was so bad for your heart, and just go cold turkey if I could. I did, and haven't looked back.
That was almost 12 years ago, and I'm still smokefree. I joined Spark People to learn to keep my heart healthy. Good luck! I think you will like it here.
I smoked for 37 years and finally quit on 9/8/03. I gained 60lbs before I knew it and have lost and gained it back again several times. But, about 5 years ago when I would gain the weight back it wasn't as much as the time before, and when I would lose it again, I found that I would lose a little more than I had the time before. If you can think of my weight gain/loss on a chart it is going from the upper left hand to the lower right with a whole bunch of zigs and zags in between. The bad thing is, by allowing my weight to fluctuate so much I developed diabetes, which is not good. In fact, it's horrible! We need to lose our weight and keep it off.
Oh, and I had bypass surgery which finally convinced me to quit the Cigs, too.

Welcome! I am happy that you were sent to a cardiologist for testing. You did a great job by kicking the cigarette habit. Keep up the great work.

I joined spark right before Christmas and am still figuring out the team concept! I saw the womans day logo and was very interested even before I knew it was a heart health team! I had a double bypass in 2005 at the age of 49. Lost my father (49) mother (59) and brother (48) all to heart disease and as you can see at a very young age! I did not present with chest pain....I never even had chest pain! My one and only symptom was extreme fatigue. Thank God I had a wonderful Dr. who took my family history in to account and insisted I see a cardiologist for a work up. On 11-29-05 I had a heart cath and was immediately transferred by ambulance to a heart center where I underwent the bypass the next day! I had a 90% blockage in my left main artery and another blockage at 80%! To say I was taken by surprise is a gross understatement! I had been a smoker for over 30 yrs and I never picked one up again! Now I find myself with more than a few pounds to lose and I never have been an exerciser. It's time to do something about it!
