Still taking the second lot. It seems better when I am on the meds, then when I stop it flares up. Hoping this time it will be finally knocked on the head. Thanks for caring. xx

I have a max of 20, but that is just me. Trial and error above I gain, below I lose. I am on maintenance now.

But others have less I think on Ketogenic. Dont know anything about it.

Others have more varying from 20 up to 60 or sometimes more.

It seems you need to find the amount on which you personally can lose. 20 is suggested as a base line for the first couple of weeks.

It is not as bad as it sounds. You just need to choose your food wisely. There is no need to be hungry or eat a little. Lots of protein with a small salad. There are also all sorts of bread subs. you can use if you are a bread lover.

Ive heard of the Scarsdale, but dont know anything about it.
I am not sure but I think wines vary a lot in carb count. Think there are some low ones. It may say on the bottle.
The thing with lo carb is that the smallest thing (like meds with sugar) for instance can throw the whole thing off. Not saying this to put you off, just as a heads up.

1 tsp sugar, fruit and even milk has a lot of carbs. emoticon
Cream, butter and cheese and eggs on the other hand are low.
You may know this already. Dont mean to preach to the converted. emoticon

I have now made my own particular lo carb my life style plan. Because of mixing it with low cal and also celebration days for the first time in my life I am in control of food. I have finally found a way of keeping me where I want to be. Mind you I say this after being on meds for a couple of weeks, some gloopy yellow stuff that was so full of sucrose it actually crusted on the bottle. However I am back on track the last couple of days.

Wishing you every success honey in what you are doing.

Hugs Wispy

Thanks for the welcome and the encouragement, Wispy!I just got back from seing a friend and we both will have a little contract between the both of us for 10 days, starting Monday. She will do the Scarsdale and for me, just no sugar, lo carb and 1 glass of wine a day.If i find that the wine could provoke a craving i will cut it out.
Of course for me this should be a life long "diet",but the first days without sugar can be difficult, so i am happy to do it with her.(for her, the incentive is a cruise, in May, and her outlook about diets is different from mine)

Hi there Rachel, so very happy to see you my friend. A big warm welcome to our little team.

I love lo carb. There is nothing like it for knocking the cravings on the head.

We are on all sorts of different plans on this team, so whatever low carb you are doing is just fine. It is wonderful not having to cut the fat out. So many delicious things with crispy skin. emoticon

One of the best things about it for me is that I can have celebration days and get right back on track with a very low carb day. It seems to knock the craving on the head immediately. Dont know if this is for everyone, but it sure helps me.

Hi, I am Rachel, 67, 195lb. I have tried many approaches and the lo carb (esp. no sugar added) has proved the most helpful.
Unfortunately when I "slip", Ihave trouble getting back on track.
I just realized that i am in a sugar cycle again.

My plan is to eat lo carb with no added sugar and stick to it.Good to read that a lot of you have benefited from adding fat rather than restricting it.

I do not plan to count calories, nor quantities for now.

(A post just reminded me that after a few days, there are no more cravings, and this lead me to this team)

Looking forward to meet all of you!

Hi Pat!

I had the same problem. No matter how much I exercised and restricted calories I couldn't lose a pound. So two weeks ago I switched to Ketogenic Diet which is almost no carbs. I love it and feel more energetic now. First few days had a headache though and had to power through it. The scale is finally moving downward though! Best of luck.

How are you doing with Ketogenics? There are others here who are also on that way of eating.

We follow different plans and support one another with what each of us is doing.

Hi! I’m Vicky and will be turning 55 in July.

I started out in Late September (2013) doing Paleo/Primal/Ancestral then later in January 2014 trying to get my body into KETOSIS. As of 4/4/14 have lost 48 lbs and inches.

I have set my daily calories 5% carbs, 15% protein and 80% fat. I used this online calculator to get figure out how many grams I need after I put these percentages.
www.mydreamshape.com/keto-calculator/
It has calculations for if you want to lose 1lb a week which is my max daily calories and C/P/F and I use the 2lb a week to figure the minimum daily calories. When I lose another 10 will go back and refigure everything .

I use coconut oil, bacon grease, butter and full fat everything. Sweetleaf brand Stevia as my sweetner.

I started this week: to walk 30+ minutes daily, adding kosher Gelatin (collagen) to my nutrition 2x daily to improve my skin, hair, nails (it has 20 different amino acids). Disolves in cold or hot liquid.

emoticon emoticon

I've been carrying extra lbs most of my life!
Since 9/27/13 I'm determined to release myself from my 'FAT' cocoon ~ letting the colorful butterfly emerge & fly!

Hi there and welcome to the team. I am not sure what you mean about the yeast. Is this an infection.

However if you have been told to go low carb - then yes, you are in the right place. emoticon You are very welcome.

Could you share a little more about the yeast? And someone on the team might be able to help you further.

Hi there Sublue, pleased to meet you.

Happy to hear you have found a low carb plan that suits your needs.
This is a great team for sharing and caring.

One of the great things about the low carb lifestyle for me is that I never need to feel hungry and there is always something I can eat for a quick fix - like cheese, eggs or meat.

Great going on losing 30lbs. I never had much of a probem losing weight on any eating plan, my problem has always been maintaining. Very pleased to now have a plan that suits me, my health issues and allows me to maintain while not feeling deprived.

Hi to everyone, it's so good to have a team of ladies with low carb eating lifestyle. I have been living low carb since June 2013 and find it easy most of the time. I love that giving up that awful low fat diet was the right thing to do to gain energy and lose weight and bad fat. As soon as I started eating fats I dropped weight very easily. All low fat did for me is add an extra 30 pounds and kept me hungry! The fats help the protein, so please don't eat anything labeled low fat- it just doesn't work with low carb metabolism. Those 30 pounds disappeared very quickly while eating butter, good oils, marbled meats and adequate protein.

Keep on Truckin'

Hi there MJ so happy to have you join us.

So you are doing the Atkins Induction right now. Its a great way to go because you can discover how the 20 a day carbs suits you. Some people lose easily on that, others not so much.... I am one of the not so much people.

I do cal carb cycling. There are many different forms. The one I use is to maintain my weight loss.

I cannot help with Fat fasting as I know nothing about it.
Koshie has used it I belive, perhaps you could drop her a line and she could give you more information. She is one of the team leaders.

Wishing you well with your new start on low carb and look forward to getting to know you on the chat threads.

Hugs Wispy

Hi Everybody!

I'm MJ (60 yr old retired teacher) and I joined the team a little while ago. In fact, I joined all of the LC groups and earlier I got them mixed up! emoticon I recognize some of you all from the others, and you have given me great advice! emoticon I jumped into LC with both feet, because I'd done it before. I ordered all the books from Amazon, stocked my frig and cupboards and got down to business! Losing is slow but , but I'm not discouraged! I'm still figuring out what's best for me. Basically, I'm doing Induction right now.

I want to know what a "Fat Fast" is, and also "rotation" or changing plans around is about. Do you go back and forth between low carb and low calorie? By the way, I love forums in this group!

emoticon

The only "diet" that works is consistency!

Hi everyone, My name is Debbie and I have been a member of SP since 2010. I ran across your team when visiting a friends page and decided to visit. I like what I have seen and decided to stick around for a while......

I am type 2 diabetic, and I have found that a low carb, low fat, low starch diet plan has work amazingly well with my long list of ailments and for keeping the numbers lower. I have a difficult time getting my A1c's in control, especially the morning numbers and my triglycerides are very high but coming down a little at a time.

Thank you for the information, Wispy. I'm off tomorrow and though I have quite a bit to do, I'll find time to learn more about this subject. I appreciate your help.

Hi there Denise.

Well there are one or two cycling sites on Spark I think, but the plan I am using is more of a home made one that suits me. Strangely enough though I saw a guy on TV the other night who has just written a book about a plan very similar to mine. I am not much into reading all the food books out there so didnt even catch his name or remember the title of the book.

There seem to be many variations on this theme. I can only share what I do personally because I know this works for me.

The basic premise.
For high days go 200 cals or 10 carbs above your maintainance level
For low days go 200 below or 10 carbs below your mainteance level
Never exceed 3 days on any one level - this seems to be part of most cycing plans.
Some people do 1 low, 1 medium, 1 high and just repeat that.
You can find by experimenting what works best for you and your individual life style.

I tend to do 2 low cal, 2 low carb, 1 celebration (when I eat what I like) 2 low cal or 2 low carb for the last two days of my week, just depending on what I feel like eating.

I find that a really low carb day will deal with an cravings I may occasionally set up after a celebration day.

I do not keep celebration food in the house. I eat those meals when I am eating out.

Some people cycle all carb days, others cycle all cals days.

I use a mixture of both so that I can get more fruit and veges on the low cal days. My personal choice because Iove fruit and veges of all kinds. I eat very little protein on my low cal days and only low starch veges on the low carb days.

These amounts are just a starting guidline. Once you find out what you need to do to lose personally you can change to suit.

I have maintained for the last year doing this.

In order to lose I cut back carbs on the low carb days and cut out the celebration day.

Thank you so much for the kind welcome, Wispy. I've heard of low cal, low carb cycling and will have to learn more about that. Do you have any favorite sites on that topic? If so, I'd love to know what they are.

I'm a real fan of coconut oil, butter, cream and such and use them all but try to keep an eye on the quantities of those.

I'll look into the other threads, also!

Hey there Denise very happy to meet you. I also have to watch the fat as it does not suit my health issues. I discovered low cal, low carb cycling over a year ago and use that to make food interesting and also get the fruit and veges I personally and need to keep me on track healthwise. I also was able to control diabetes with eating in this way and am also off blood pressure pills. Doc is pleased with my plan and progress and I feel healthy and have more energy than I have for years.

I eat a lot of chicken, some lamb, pork and beef but apart from crispy skin and pork crackling which I love I go for lean protein and fish frequently. I use coconut oil for cooking, skin and hair (skin and hair I discovered from Betty - a fellow team mate and friend). It is marvelous for those. I also use butter cheese and eggs. Not much cream because I dont like it - not for health reasons.

Whatever your plan you are very welcome here. Many of us share what we eat - not to change or convert anyone else into our own particular way of eating, but as information only for others who may have similar health issues or find it interesting.

Looking forward to getting to know you better on the chat thread. It is the one that has a month in the title. There are also other threads you may enjoy especially "what did you do today that is good for you" if you are wanting support with exercise.

Hi, y'all. I'm Denise and I live in Texas. Okay, now that the obvious stuff is out of the way..... ;)

I'm 51 and have been low carbing for the most part for 14 years. I'm also an adult onset Type 1 diabetic who needs to keep a close eye on fat so very strict low carbing doesn't work well for me. I used to eat under 20 grams most days and now eat 30 to 60 grams most days, more on some. To make matters even more interesting, meat has caused my blood sugar to rise quite a bit in the last two years so although I do eat it, I can't eat a lot of it and what I do eat is antibiotic and hormone free. And pricey!

So, as for a plan it's basically lower carb/low to moderate fat and heavy on the non-starchy vegetables. Alas, it can also be very boring but I manage it well most of the time.

One would think my weight would be lovely but it isn't! I need to lose at least 35 lbs while trying to stay on track with the diet and the blood sugar. I exercise but not enough and really would like some encouragement in that department.

Anyway, that's pretty much the basic run down on me. :)

I hope to get to know y'all!

Hi there Amie, so pleased you have joined Spark and hope that you will enjoy our team.
There are several people here on Atkins and it sounds like you are off to a really good start.

WOW, on losing so much weight. You are truly amazing and I am very happy for you. What a wonderful story you have to share.

Like Louise, I did Atkins years ago, also WW and many other programmes. In my case I had no problem losing when I was younger, but my thing was always regaining and then some. The very day I reached goal I would heave a big sigh of relief and think thank goodness that's over......

I joined spark 5 years ago this month and it without a doubt one of the best things I have ever done. I have met some wonderful people and made really good friends.

In this team one of the wonderful things is that we do not judge the way other people eat. We use several different low carb eating plans and that is just fine.

We try and avoid any controversy over the way other people eat who are not on low carb. The battle rages outside as to what is the "best eating plan" we find in here what what works for one may not work for another.

We also have a range of health issues and eat in different ways as a result of our conditions.

Since joining Spark I have lost about 50 pound, when I joined I had intended losing more and getting back to my earlier ideal of 125 pound. However I am in my seventies now and my health has improved so much that I decided to maintain where I feel happy and comfortable. Also doc gave me 6 months to get my blood sugar in order before going on meds and thankfully I was able to do that with low carb. I am also off BP pills and doc is happy with my weight. The best news of all is that I have been able to maintain for over a year now. Something I could never do before.

Gosh I have gone on a lot. Please dont let that scare you off.... I tend to be a chatty person.

Wishing you all the very best.
Hugs Wispy.

Hi Amie! Good for you on all the weight you have lost! I did Atkins years ago and lost 100 lbs in a year. You can do it! I just started it again and joined Spark for the support. Loving it!
It's no fun getting older when there are all those nasty medical things we have to deal with, but loosing weight and getting in a healthier state makes the process much brighter and more fun.
Since we both just started lets keep in touch and support each other. WE CAN DO IT!

Hello Everyone, My name is Amie and I just started here on Spark a few days ago and really loving it , love this group , was reading a few of the posts and plan to read more later . So much great info here. I started doing low carb on March 4th and am very happy so far. Have had one slip with a pack of crackers but now they are gone and not calling me and no more will be bought . I'm a PB & Honey Cracker freak so can't have them around. I did get my starter pkg. from Atkins and they sent me some PB fudge bars so that will be nice for a night snack. I'm trying to stay in the 25 to 30 grams a day for my Carb count and trying to get in 100 or more grams of protein a day. not sure what the total a day is supposed to be for that. Been going over the books and low carb recipe books and am very excited because I think I have found something I will be able to stick with , I have done Weight Watchers to the Cabbage Soup diet for years and nothing worked for me. In 2011 my Dr. said I had a year to live and encouraged me to have a Gastric Bypass , I was 438 lbs. I now weigh 267.5 , the weight came off good the first 2 years but have stalled at 280 as of the 21st of Feb. and my Dr. suggested going Low Carb as I still want to lose another 100 lbs. So have been faithfully doing this since March 4th and so far so good. Looking forward to learning and sharing with you all. Have a great day.

Hi! I'm Louise, 60 years young, Overweight and feeling miserable. I had both knees replaced 4 years ago and have been building up my strength in my legs little by little. Walking is about the only exercise I can do comfortably. Was doing well and lost some weight last summer by walking 3 miles a day, however, this winter has been brutal here and I need to get walking again. I have a very stressful job, (which I love!) working with autistic students. My youngest grandson is autistic and the love of my life.
I lost 100 lbs way back, after having 3 children, using the Atkins plan. Going to give it a go around again. I'm too young at heart to feel this old!

Yep they are the most likely culprits for the cravings. I know how you feel I was a yoghurt lover - still am but seldom even think of it these days.

Best wy to find out is to cut these items out for two weeks and see if the craving lessens or disappears. They may be other things as well that keep it going. Once it goes life becomes much more simple.

Hi there ladies.

Like Joye says - there is no need to feel hungry on low carb. One of the things I most love about it. Eggs are low carb and egg white has none. Any time of white fish, meat or poultry is no carb (exculding offal) which does have some.

I make salmon fritters. A can of salmon with a beaten egg and fry them crispy. Delish for a snack hot or cold. For the whole can of salmon and 1 egg this is less than 1 carb. If I use only the egg white to bind the fish it has no carbs at all.

I also make mince burgers with just seasoning and either an egg to bind or maybe 100grs whipped cooked cauliflower (in food proccesor). This is also less than 2 carbs which all comes from the cauliflower. Melted cheese on top is so good.
Hard cheese is less than 1 carb for 100 grams.

I make all sorts of desserts and sauces with eggs, gelatin, cream and artificial sweetener.

If you are craving Betsy, it is most likely you are eating something that is triggering the feelings. We are all different in what our trigger foods are but most of us find anything with sugar in it will start that feeling regardless of how many carbs or cals we are eating.
Also for many grains products will have the same effect.
For me personally it can also be fruit or any kind of dairy product that is high in carbs (ie cottage cheese or skim milk).

Basic low carb in most plans suggest using double cream instead of milk or single cream, hard cheese of any kind or those very low in carbs. This information is always on the label. You will see that the carbs in cottage cheese for instance is higher than most other types of cheese, although it is lower cal - it does have the lactose component of milk - which is the craving factor.

The lower I keep the carb count the less craving there is. Yoghurt is also high in craving content. :o) I learned this my cost because I love yoghurt. It is a binge food for me.

Some people find hard chips (crisps) and nuts are also high in the "craving" department although they may have no sugar, they seem to have something that just makes us want to go on eating them.

It is a journey Betsy in finding what works and does not work for you.

I am not an Atkins, or South Beach person, but the basic Atkins plan of induction does a pretty good job of getting the cravings things out of the system for most people. It might be more helpful as a starting point than South Beach. I cannot cope with a high fat content - although for some people it gives a feeling of fullness and has no carbs.

Please keep chatting - it is so well worth the time spent in finding out what works for us, and often talking to others can be helpful in sorting stuff out.

Hugs Wispy

You really should never be hungry on a LC diet. Just eat more protein, a hard boiled egg..a few bites of chicken, some tuna salad, whatever you have on hand. Here is a great dessert..1/4 c or so of Ricotta cheese (I even use part skim because I am calorie conscience). Put in a little plain cocoa powder, some Stevia and a little lemon juice or vanilla , almond, cocoanut or maple flavored extract. Stir up..it is yummy and enough protein to make your tummy happy for awhile.

thank you ladies for all of the wonderful information. I have been struggling...... Like many of you, I don't really know how much protein to have, or how much fat. I have been trying the South Beach Diet, it seems to give you a few more carbs, and is relatively low calorie. Some days I am very satisfied, others, not so much. And then I crave, and usually fall off the wagon for the day. I'm not sure if I just don't have good willpower, or haven't found the plan for me.....Why is it so difficult!.

I'm pleased to say that following this group seems to keep me a bit more on track, even though I am still floundering. I think, I agree, that tweek as you go, seems to be the best, and keep tracking.and watch yourself, your weight, your cravings, etc., very closely.

I hear you Eliz. I love cheese as well. One of the reasons I choose to maintain.
However I am determined to lose this Christmas gain. Still have 2 - 3lb to go.

The really good news is that if I wasnt in Spark goodness knows how much I would weigh by now and how much worse I would be physically.

Have a happy day ladies.

I love how I eat too. But I'm not losing. Last time I added exercise and I still did not lose weight- but lost inches.
I need to tweak something- I just don't want to give up dairy.

Cant honestly remember how much I lost at that time. But I lost very slowly, my metabolism and being disabled. However I lost 50 - 60 lbs the first two or three years.I have focused on maintenance since then because health was good and doc was very happy. I did not have to go on diabetes meds and came of bp meds. all figures seem to be good.

I do have celebration days and sometimes weeks like holidays - that is my choice I enjoy my life style and love eating out. I can maintain fine on celebration days, but this last Christmas I gained 7 lb over the holiday, so I am currently working on losing that. In order to do so I need to eat about 1000 cals a day. But this is just my age and other factors. Some people like me have to be on 800 to lose, so I count my blessings.

It is very much a case of trial and error to find what works best for us I find pumpkin soup is a great thing for constipation and is quite low in carbs and cals. :o)

I tried to make it fun by trying new things when the old ones stopped working, or became too hard to live with. emoticon

emoticon Wispy for that info. I was going to ask you what you ate on any given day. I am very LC, I tried eating more fat and therefore calories, and it didn't work for me. I think I should be Low calories, about 1200, too. I ordered "Living Low Carb" by Jonny Bowden from Amazon as somebody suggested, maybe I can learn something. I have a bit of trouble in the constipation dept. I am sure this LC thing is the way to go, tho! emoticon

BTW, how much weight did you lose those first 3 months?

Hey hon.

Well the plan I started with was for fibro inflammation. There was no weighing or measuring at all and it was so simple.

If you are interested, and in view of my last post - only if you are interested.

We could eat as much as we liked and as often as we liked of:

Meat excluding offal
Poultry
Fish excluding shell fish
Eggs

Green veges, salad veges.
cauliflower, mushrooms and virtually any veges that is not a root vege
Daily 1/2 tom
Daily 1/2 lemon or a few blueberries or straws or rasps. Like 3 straws.
They are great mashed and sweetened in the jelly. Cream was good with that.
sugar free jello
Fat and Oil
A few nuts a day I think. I tend to binge on nuts so left them alone.

Double Cream as I recall was 1 - 2 tablspoons a day.

Practically all the carbs came from the veges. I had no craving and was never hungry because there was always something I could eat. I also sometimes do not lose much fluid. I do keep drinking a lot though. I mentioned this to my doctor and he said not to worry. So I havent. But it is a good idea to check it out with your own doctor. Some people also have constipation from the low fibre. This did not bother me personally.

No dairy except for the cream for the first 3 months
No caffeine
No processed
No root veges
No other fruit
No grains

It is kind of extreme, but the good news was no craving whatsoever and I could eat any time I wanted as long as I stuck to what I was allowed and best of all the fibro pain and exhaustion began to leave. This was an enormous bonus. Also I got off BP pills and did not need to go on diabetes meds. So it was a win/ win situation for me.

After the three months we were allowed to eat a little grain, cheese, milk fruit etc
and it was suggested we do this very gradually to see what we could handle without setting up pain or craving.

I found I stopped losing as soon as I started eating these things again, so I moved on to a different plan which suits me now, but it does involve counting everything.
This does not bother me now because I know all the weights and measures. I have been in Spark for 5 years. :o)

Hope this might be helpful. If not, please ignore it.
This was so simple I loved it. We ate that

-WISPY-:

I am the first to admit I do not know what I am DOING with this new way of eating. I have a tendency to jump in feet first and just get going. Some action is better than none. I am such a newbie!

I have cut all grains, liquid milk, all processed food, all root vegetables. I do not eat anything that has a myrid of ingredients that sound like they come out of a physics textbook.

I don't even know what to aim for as far as fat or protein goes. I know everyone is different.

So far, I've managed to keep my carbs pretty much in the range of 40-50 per day. Fat and protein have been all over the place. I don't know if 1200 calories a day is better, or 1500 calories a day is better.

I suppose I will just have to watch the scale and see what happens, and experiment.

One thing I noticed today is that I am not letting loose much water. I have already downed my 8, 8 oz glasses of water today and I am not urinating much. This is perplexing and not normal for me. I notice if I do not drink my water, especially in the morning, that my kidney's seem to ache.

One thing I am sure of: pretty soon I am going to get tired of weighing and measuring my food and putting it in the Food Tracker. I did not like that about other diet plans - as it is not long term. I am not "into" measuring 1 tablespoon of dressing for my salad, for example.

Hey girls,

One of the reasons why it is really good to find out what works for ourselves individually is that what seems to work for one does not necessarily work for another.

Therefore it is helpful for everyone if we do not push our own particular way of eating as if it was the only one. Have to say that I have done this in the past - with the best of intentions, but it is not really helpful.

There are different health issues, metabolism and a whole lot of other factors which come into play.

Starting off basic low carb of cutting out sugar, refined starch products, grain and milk, root vegetables and also many fruits. This seems to work pretty well for almost anyone.
Processed food and caffeine more or less seem to depend on the individual. They set up allergies and cravings in me personally. But that is just me and not so for everyone.

What other people do is a matter of choice and some use high fat and oil while others prefer lower fat content. This is an individual choice and you do not have to eat high fat to be low carb.

We are individuals and once we have the notion of low carb eating (excluding any specific diet) it is easier to then find out what does and does not work for us individually and also long term keep our bowels active and does not cause craving. It has been a journey for me with many different eating plans tried along the way.

Being too definite that a particular diet works for me has proved long term not to be a satisfactory option. The main reason being I could not live a life time happily on what I was eating. I have maintained now for the last year and am very happy with the way of life that suits me and my life style.

Ketosis is a matter which seems to have a controversial element. Some people are happy staying there for a life time, others are not. This is a personal health issue. I understand that Atkins and some other plans suggest we eat this way for a life time.

The reason I mention it here is that I did not discover that for quite some time. I thought the ketosis aspect was temporary. I am not saying I believe ketosis is good or bad. Just suggesting it is a good topic to investigate if you are planning on using any diet which suggests this.

This probably all sounds a bit like a sermon, but it is just something to think about when deciding which particular low carb way of eating you are going to follow.

Hugs Wispy

Hi all,

Started low-carb high-fat in early July 2013 and have lost 25lbs (I'd lost 30 pounds between Feb. & July on low-fat diet -- but always hungry, low energy, bad psoriasis, not much blood sugar control). No grains, no sugar, very little fruit because it spikes my blood glucose (I'm a T2 diabetic). Managed to lower my A1C from 8.4 to 5.5 so far -- due for a checkup next week. Aim for 80% fat, 5% carbs, 15% protein. Psoriasis is pretty much in remission (probably due to giving up grains?) Blood sugar is fabulous -- even gets too low some days. I guess you would call my version keto low carb. Mood is sooo much better. Went back to Planet Fitness in December and go two-three times per week to do strength training and the elliptical.

There is one side effect though: I find treats that I used to love way too sweet. This is, I suppose, a Good Thing?

Since the initial change to no grain/no sugar (other than what's naturally in a real food) I've had no cravings for either.

My favorite lchf blog is www.dietdoctor.com -- he has a very good how-to (and he's funny).

Started on this journey by watching a TED talk by Dr. Peter Attia, then went from that to reading Gary Taube's stuff.

It's maybe not as fast as I'd like it to be (the weight loss, I mean), but it's working. Every couple of week now I go on a Fat Fast to keep things revved up, and I track everything in FitDay (software I've had since 2004) since I need to.

There may be other ways to do this, but this way is working for me -- though I do learn a lot and adjust things as I go along. I learned, for example, that fat is not bad for you (just trans fats and omega 6 vegetable oils) -- in fact, it's good for you. I use coconut oil a lot (cheap source for the good stuff is Vitacost.com).

Every morning I have a big cup of Bulletproof Coffee, which keeps me full for hours (eggs too, and sometimes cream cheese and/or meat or tuna). This coffee is made by adding about 1 ounce of coconut oil, one ounce of unsalted grass-fed butter (KerryGold is what I use) to however big a cup of coffee you like and emulsifying it (I use a shake thingie) -- I add .25 cup of heavy cream because I like it better with it.

Always interested in learning what works for other people -- I have learned that everybody has to adjust her own way of eating to what works best for her -- experiment and keep track of it all is what I do.

Hello Spedie, welcome to Spark People. It is a wonderful site. So happy you have joined us on this team and look forward to having you with us.

I read right through your post how else would I get to know you. :o) We have an assortment of medical issues here so you are not alone in having those to contend with.

I have found low carb/ow cal a great way to go for health issues and also for feeling good and losing weight. Low carb does seem to help with the pains of inner inflammation, for which I am very grateful.

Like you I enjoy more vegs than on some low carb plans, especially as I intend this to be a way of life. Short term I can do without all sorts of things, but I love fruit and veges so I have adapted a low carb/low cal plan to suit my own needs.

I keep it very simple because this suits me and my life style.

Hello: I just found this group yesterday and this is my 1st post. I am new to SP. I initially got on SP for Wheat Belly but now my knowledge has grown in regards to my personal situation. I still think Wheat Belly is a good plan, but decided to take my net carbs lower. Then, I found this group. I am elated to find a group for women over 50 who are doing low carb.

I don't find it difficult to cut processed food because I had cut most already due to my soy allergy.

This is going to be long. Stop reading here unless you want to read a book!! LOL

I still have lots to learn. I started my low carb eating-for-life plan last Thursday evening with dinner. I know dinner might seem a weird way to start, but there is no time like the present.

This is my health (I have not posted ALL this on my other active team as I did not want to freak out the men):

1. My BMI started at 33.6 last Thursday
2. My weight started out at 202.5 lbs last Thursday, as weighed on my new scale. Ackkk, I had to buy a scale!
3. I have had Hashimoto's thyroid condition for 13 years.
4. I am allergic to soy. I found this out the hard way about 4 years ago.
5. I am post menopausal. I went through the change naturally a couple of years ago. I am on no supplements or drugs for that. I have done the year without a period now, twice. Yep, the darned thing decided to rear it's ugly head about 15 months ago...so strange.
6. I don't have hot flashes during the day anymore, but still have those aweful night sweats, every freaking night, even in the winter.
7. I have controlled high blood pressure. The BP meds keep going up in strength over time.
8. I was a stage 4 endometriosis sufferer that was figured out by a wonderful doc when I was but just 23 years old. I think there is a link between soy, thyoid and endometriosis. Now, both my daughters suffer with this horrible condition. My oldest daughter is a stage 3 and has been so since she was 19 - 7 years ago.
9. The only good number with my cholesteral is the HDL, which is great at about 62 or something like that. The other numbers are abysmal.
10. A couple of years ago I had to have both shoulders operated on. There was a lot of inflammation and damage. The surgeon cleaned them out, stitched me up, put an anchor in both shoulders. No cause was found. I did not damage them in an accident. I suspect it was from chronic inflammation. Now my hips hurt the same way. I am stuck sleeping on my back. I dare not sleep on my sides or my hips wake me up after a short time. I already bought a new mattress to no avail.
11. I am not diabetic. Not even close. Fasting glucose is never over 80, most of the time it is in the 60's.

I am on one BP med, one grain of Armour and .10 mcg of generic synthroid, daily.

I have put in all my food, exercise and water (except for last Thursday) in my food tracker and it is public.

I still do not know how to take my carbs necessarily lower. I seem to be eating 40 or 50 net carbs per day. To take them lower would mean I would have to reduce my vege's that I am eating (or something, need advice), which so far has been broccoli, cauliflower and raw spinach, some onions and mushrooms. I need the fiber. I do not know how to go much lower.

I am still confused on how much protein to aim for, and how much fat.

The first few days I ate filet mignon steaks for dinner. I cannot afford to do that every day. Last night, I made a low carb casserole, but it shot my calorie count to over 1400 for that day.

I don't know if this is good or bad.

My weight this morning and yesterday morning (they were the same) was 195.8. This is a loss of just short of 7 lbs in 4 days. I suspect most of it is probably water.

I've been trying to keep my salt up.

I work a desk job as a computer person, so I am quite inactive.

I had to fire my last doctor who wanted to put me on statins. I only saw him one time because my previous doctor had retired. Instead of addressing my cholesteral with diet, he wanted to put a post menopausal woman (me) on statins then he recommended a low fat, higher carb diet. I fired him right there, on the phone. Latest research, and subsequent lawsuits, show that many post menopausal women that go on statins end up with type 2 diabetes when they had no diabetes before.

I have a much better GP now. He is an MD and natural pathic type doctor.

I look forward to the more experienced people in here giving me tips on how to fine tune my diet. I would love to give support to those in need, once I figure what I am DOING!

If doctors realise the harm they can do with their lack of interest and idle words, I am sure they would be more careful.

They wanted to put me on drugs as well for the diabetes, but I said I wanted to try with diet first. He looked surprised. It seems most people opt for the pills because it is easier than trying to change our eating plan. He was even more surprised and I have to say delighted when I actually had lost weight and my diabetes numbers were good. He kind of thinks of me as "special". I asked him why, and he said that most people just do not bother. So hats off to us girls, we are trying to do the right thing. I hate taking pills which has actually been a big help in keeping me going.

However I gained over christmas and am still trying to lose that.

There are ways to get round the low carb numbers by using alternative bread and starch products and I do use sweetener instead of sugar. I am going to be eating this way, hopefully for the rest of my life, so I have got to enjoy it or I wont have a hope of staying on plan. I love soup - this is a life saver as it is very filling and all the veges are great for our health.

Hope you get it going Healthnut and find a way of perhaps bringing down the carb numbers a little without feeling deprived... at least if that is what the doctors want.

Wishing us all well one day at a time. That's how I have to do it. Do not think about the next day. It is always today, so just do the best I can in the day I am in.

IMMORTALDEBRA- all I can say is "Drs!!!!! Grrrr" don't get me started!

Mine was not pleased with my better blood results after losing 20 pounds and then gave me 3 months (normally I get 6 months) to do better? And that was Oct.-Nov-Dec. Well duh- I lost nothing! Those are HARD months! But I maintained!!

My doctor didnt even give me a diet plan or diary or exercise plan or anything. He gave me Metformin, Phentermin, and Topomax, had me get some blood work done and told me to do aerobic exercise then see him in a month. How is that for guidance? I feel so special. And I have150lbs to lose and and am newly diagnosed pre diabetic. It's not like I went there seeking to lose 25 lbs.

HEALTHNUT2009, everyone of us are different, you have to go with the numbers that work for you. In all of these food programs, and books, they give you guidelines. If the numbers make you uncomfortable, tweek them so that you are fully satisfied, and yet dropping the weight, if that is your goal. Consult with your counselors and doctors and they can better advise you based on your medical situations. Good Luck, it does take a lot of work and planning, but eventually, if you stick with it, you will see that it comes a little easier to you.

Hi di hi girls,

Betsie and Eliz you are both bright sparks. Tee hee no pun intended. I love it that you are able to smile and not get bogged down in your health issues.

I did misunderstand Eliz my love, I thought you meant that way of eating had actually triggered the relapse. The only thing I know about MS is from a TV programme where one of the characters has it. She has to pace herself and not overdo the stress....sounds like my life. :o)

I always loved protein so have no problem eating the recommended amount. But I do also enjoy the low cal days when I either eat none or very little. I love stir fries and they are so easy to adapt as are salads.
I love mixed veges salads with all sorts of goodies in them incuding a few nuts, sultanas and toasted coconut sprinkled over the top.
Sometines I use just egg whites, which have no carbs at all and only 18 cals.

Well "the steps" seem to have gone by the board currently Eliz. I have been doing a lot of work round the house. I have been very active and tended to have overdone it....alas a big problem for me when I start on a project. I have even been moving furniture and am amazed at how much I am actually able to do when the adrenalin kicks in. This is not good for me. I know this.... so yesterday and today are rest days.

Warm hugs to you guys. Loving Spark people. xxx

(((HUGS))) Wispy! :o) How are your steps going? I had to take a break from walking. The flu, and then over doing it caught up to me!

I should have been clearer below! I did not relapse from the calorie/carb cycling. I just had an un-expected (well I guess they are never expected!!) relapse.
Yes I follow some of Dr Terry Wahls MS diet. She has MS and is not longer in a wheel chair thanx to diet. I just can't eat the amounts of food she recommends. But it is a good help. Low carb whole foods. She has constant studies and she's only one state away from us.

I've just been too tired mentally, to do more than pick a low carb food and eat it! LOL!!

thanks Wispy, so far so good, I am anxious to weight in, no need to feel bad about the pancreas, it is part of my life plan, it just makes some "normal" things a challenge. It makes me stronger! I am seeing my fasting blood sugars coming down, I've not been hungry. I do find it hard to wrap my head around the plan, it's higher fat and protein than I am used to! I will "get it", until then I will carry by book!

as far as the water--8 - 8 oz glasses of water is 64 ozs. isn't that a half gallon, or have I made an error in my figures. 8 ozs is a cup, 16 ozs is a pint, 32 ozs is a quart 128 ozs in a gallon.

Hi there Betsy and a warm welcome to the Team. I too do a cycling plan and it suits me very well indeed. The cycle limit as I understand it is a max of three days on any one level. I tend to mix them up with low medium and high. I also throw in low cal cycle days. Sorry to hear about the pancreas. I too am diabetic.

You can try at at any amount of carbs a day and see how you go. Each one of us is different and some can handle more carbs than others. Great that your doctors are so on board. My results have all become good since I have been following this plan. I changed to low fat some time ago. High fat did not suit me although some days I go higher than other. As long as it is something solid, like cheese my innards seem to be OK.

Susique
I do use cycling for weight loss, but I use low cal days as well in order to achieve this. I love the cycling method because it gives so much variety to what I eat and the joy of fresh fruit and veges appeals to me long term. I do not want to ever go back to the weight I was, nor to the cravings.

Debra, we are all on different plans. Never heard of a gallon a day. How much is that in 8oz glasses?

Eliz honey. I do not have MS. I do fibro and other health issues, but the low carb, low plan has helped everything. Off BP pills and no need to go on diabetes ones. They gave me 6 months to see if I could do this by diet alone. So happy that it worked out.
For MS, I am thinking following your doctors advice is the best way to go. You sure wouldn't want a relapse from the way you were eating.

I have seen MS plans on line, but never checked them out.

Way to go Healthnut. Hope the scales keep on dropping for you. Reducing the carbs if they stop dropping will hopefully do the trick.

Hi Susique2, I'm new also but I am doing a carb cycling program. I am only on day 3, I have lost a pound! I don't know much about it either, my doctors have suggested lowering my carbs for weight loss and diabetic good health. My blood sugars have dropped dramatically already! I am using a very popular carb cycling plan with a few tweeks for my specialized needs. After reading a good share of this book, I think it is a pretty healthy way to go. Good luck to you!

So I've been at this a few days and lost a couple of pounds. I'm keeping the carbs at 50 - 150 to see if that is low enough to let me lose weight consistently. I think long term I'll look at carb cycling because I know I'll need it to address special occasions (which sometimes is just a weekend). Does anyone use carb cycling for weight loss or is it mainly for maintenance. I don't know much about it.

My plan is pretty basic. My nutritionist and doctors have decided we first have to find my magic number in the carb counting. I am doing a cycle program, they, and I, feel that this is the healthiest way for me. I am using the diabetic program on spark people in conjunction with the lower carb. I am keeping my carbs, right now between 75 and 125, low calorie, high fiber, low fat. I have a difficult time wrapping my head around high protein, high fat, no carb. So, the plan is to keep it as easy, workable and interchangeable as possible.

In response to your question regarding my pancreas, I had a cancerous tumor removed.

After only a few hours, I see that my numbers are starting to come down, so I'm pretty excited already! Thanks for welcoming me!

Hi, I'm Betsy I'm 56, I have diabetes. I am obese. I have been on Spark People since December. I have struggled with my weight all of my life. I only have a small portion of my pancreas, so I am never sure what the numbers will be, and can range dramatically daily. I need to get them more consistent. The Doctors have advised maybe a low carb plan is in order.

We have decided we will tweek as we go to make a low carb plan that will work for me. I have been reading bunches and think a low carb cycling plan may be the answer. Today is day 1. I'm sure I will need a lot of guidance. I am excited for this.

Hi there Susi, a warm welcome back.

We all have our own bodies to consider. Atkins does not suit me either - but others seem to find it helpful. I do enjoy some of their recipes though.
There are plenty of low carb plans to choose from these days, I am sure you will find one tht suits you.

However if the cravings did not go with Atkins induction I m wondering if perhaps you are addicted to some other food, I had to change to decaf coffee and watch the dairy. There is sugar in lactose and also sucrose in any fruit and many veges.

Back at spark after a long absence. I have recently lost 30 on WW and stalled, gained 10 back. Low carb has worked for me in the past, just not too low. Carb cravings never left and I got lightheaded on Atkins. Anyway, I'm back looking for the magic number for me.

Hi there healthnut,

This team is for anyone who is following any type of low carb lifestyle and it is not our intention to convert others to any particular way of eating. I am sorry you have gained this impression.

I see you know exactly what suits you. This is good. There is a team caled South Beach Diet. The leader Morticia and you have a great deal in common. She is also a nurse. It is more balanced than the Atkins plan and suits those who do not want to eat high fat and limited vegetables long term.

Like you I do not want to go into ketosis. I did not realise that Atkins actually suggests you stay there for the rest of your life. There are several other plans that are now suggesting the same thing. This may suit some people. If it is not helpful then they will find this out. Trial and error has been what has worked best for me in the long run.

Atkins did not die of a heart attack. He slipped and fell on ice and hit his head.
I started with Atkins and do not eat any Atkins, bars, shakes, meals. I eat real food.

I am losing weight on my 1200 calorie menu plans
I do not go hungry I do not crave anything !!

duh - yes i joined the atkins.com website last nite

the menu choices seemed to always include a "atkins bar or some atkins food"
well they got to make their money somehow.. right?

-- first meal was scrambled eggs
with avocado -- high in fat very high - its like more than what the diabetic counsellor said for me to have in 1 day !!

thank you - but no thanks --- i dont want to have a stroke or a heart attack eating 100 g of fat a day -- good grief ...

i just dont understand how any doctor could recommend that type of what i would consider unbalanced meals -- then again what do i know ? right ..

and i may be incorrect on this (usually am incorrect) didnt that dr atkins didnt he die of a heart attack? ... perhaps not ...

HEALTHNUT, I suggest you check out Atkins.com and read up on the low carb way of eating, the why's and wherefore's of it. I twill help your mind set a lot. We need to know what we are doing and why....right?

Well honey, we are all on different plans here and therefore eat a varying no of carbs.
I am a carb addict so my daily high is 20, but this is just me. It is the basic level Atkins suggest in order to get started and judge as your base line until you find out what suits you in order to lose.
It is probably better to start with one plan - any plan you like - and see if you are losing weight.

I have tried out several plans along the way and now have something that suits me and my life style.

How low is low carb?

Diabetic Counsellor said 100 - 150 g /day , carbs -- sugar (30g/day)

she said you need carbs for energy - that was 4 weeks ago - she went on vacation left me to figure it out - -on my own -- i been working at recording every single morsel of food every day since jan 7 -- lost 8 lbs -- i am sure someone is going to tell me its water weight -- whatever burst my bubble
some say - i am basically making things worse by eating 100 - 150 g carbs a day
i should be eating less than 50 g a day -- good grief .. what do i eat ?
dont tell me more fat -- with fatty liver and high cholosteral i dont think that is a choice ..

Dr said 50 g /day ZERO sugar

Kidney aches -- try adding 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar to your first glass of iced water in the AM. Helps to flush out the kidneys. Works for me.

Never!!! Never had kidney aches! I did not drink enough water in the beginning. But it sounds like you should make sure you get at least 8 cups! I drink a lot of coffee/cream.
I think I'd ask my Dr too!

Hi there Su and welcome to the Team.

I too love low carb eating with all the fresh protein that is available. And like you say there is always something on the menu you can eat if you want to eat low carb. Nothing like a juicy steak and salad.

Happy to have you join us. Check us out on the monthy thread.
