Ugh! October was a TERRIBLE walking month! I was hoping to take advantage of the cooler-but-not-yet-too-cold weather, but instead I just got lazy. A mere 21.52 miles. That's less than I got in the middle of summer, and I am NOT a person who enjoys summer!

*sigh*

Well, I think my goal for November is just going to be to beat my miles from October. I figured I'd start slowing down this month with winter approaching, but I have to make up for all the miles I didn't get in last month.

Wow, September was a CRAZY walking month! I managed to walk 33 miles, outside of my vacation. So, even taking away almost a whole week, this was still my highest month since May. Not only that, but I averaged about 5 miles/day while I was in NY. So, tacking that on, I did roughly 58 miles of walking this month! Wow!

I am just outside a small town called Lytton, Iowa, which straddles Sac and Calhoun counties (I'm still in Calhoun since I haven't quite reached the town yet). Three more counties -- about 85 miles -- to make it the rest of the way across the state.

I'm aiming for 45 miles in October. I'd like to make this my best month this year (minus walking around Manhattan for 5 days) and really take advantage of the cool-but-not-cold weather, since I'm anticipating a drop off in November and December. 50 would be great, but I'd still be really happy with 45.

26.89 miles in August. I am up to 165.16 miles total, which puts me just outside of Webster City in Hamilton County.

Tracking miles in September will be interesting. With the cooler weather I'd like to increase my goal, and aim for at least 35 miles total. However, I am spending 5 days on vacation in NYC later this month. I'm sure I will get in lots of walking, but I think pulling out my phone app that I use to track miles every time we go a few blocks here or a few blocks there might take some of the enjoyment out of my vacation. So I think I will aim for 25 "for sure" miles not including the vacation time, and then use Google Maps to estimate how much walking I did in NYC after I get home.

Walked 22.65 miles in July. Guess the heat slowed me down more than I thought it would. But I'm also doing other forms of cardio so I don't feel too bad about this number.

Total so far is 138.27 miles. I am just to the south of Iowa Falls, in the middle of Hardin county. Not halfway through the state, but close. I imagine August will be another relatively short month, mileage-wise, but once the weather turns cooler I plan to start walking a lot more again. My current goal is to reach Sioux City and the Missouri River by the end of the year.

Fell WAY short of my goal this month. Only walked 28.34 miles. I blame the heat, but mostly I just haven't been committed to reaching my goal. I think about halfway through the month I realized it just wasn't going to happen so I had no real drive to keep pushing.

Next month I am lower that 50-mile goal to 30-miles, which I think is MUCH more realistic in terms of both the summer heat and also giving me the freedom to do other forms of exercise without thinking, "I should be spending this time walking."

I'm currently in the middle of Grundy county. If I walk about 30 miles in July I will be near the border between Hardin and Hamilton counties, which are the next two over. It will also be very close to the halfway point of my walk across the state.

I didn't quite reach my goal this month; I walked 42 miles in May, compared to the 50 I hoped to get. I've walked 87.28 miles since I started, and my virtual location is now Waterloo, IA, in Blackhawk County. I'm actually standing on the bridge over the Cedar River.

In June I'll try again for my goal of 50 miles in a month. That would put me near the Iowa Falls Municipal Airport.

Sure thing.

~ Log into your Google account (or make one if you don't have one).
~ Go to Google Maps and click on "My Maps" (which is near the top left next to "Get Directions")
~ Create a new map.

Once you've created your map you can name it, enter a description, and decide if you want it to be public or not. If you choose "unlisted" no one will be able to find it unless you give them the URL. Speaking of which, in the upper right there's a "Link" button to click; that's the URL you'll need to share with people. Just copy/pasting from the address bar won't work.

Then you can use the tools to manipulate the map itself. I put little bubbles marking my starting and ending points, and then I use the line tool (click the arrow to get to the option "draw a line along roads" if you want your lines to stick to the roads, otherwise the regular line tool you can use anywhere) to add to my route.

The map autosaves every now and then, but when you're done with your changes make sure you click the "Save" button in the upper left (if it's greyed out that means your changes are already saved) and then "Done." When you go back to your map later you'll have to click an "Edit" button up in that same area in order to make new changes.

Hope this helps!

How did you get the google map to work interactively? I am puzzled. I've tried everything I know about Google Maps, and can't get mine to work like yours. Please help me out if you can describe what you did..

Well, one month in, and I'm 45 miles along the way. I've walked all the way across Dubuque County and I'm roughly 2/3 of the way through Delaware County, just outside of Manchester. I'm hoping to get at least another 50 miles in May, which would put me another two counties over, on the other side of Waterloo, IA, and roughly 1/3 of the way across the state.

Ha, maybe! Well I have just barely made it out of my own city, but it is kinda cool to see the daily progress, as small as it is.

This is a wonderful idea! I live in Iowa too and think it would be cool to walk across the state (virtually). Good luck and maybe we'll 'meet' along the way!

This is such an interesting idea. I've decided that I'm going to walk across Iowa. I recently moved to this state, specifically to Dubuque, which is on the eastern border. So I thought I'd make my destination Sioux City, straight across on the other side. According to Google Maps, it would take me just over 4 days to walk the 308 miles nonstop. Let's see how long it takes just doing a little bit each day.
