Hello fellow hikers. Where are you? I have had a couple of off weeks with a terminally ill father-in-law. Now back on track and need to figure out my miles. emoticon emoticon

Well, I'm not going to be hiking the AT anytime soon, but DH & I are taking a couple days next week & going over to Callaway Gardens, in Georgia. We will do lots of walking, admiring the gorgeous azaleas & other spring flowers.

Yesterday I took two long walks, ended up with over 18000 steps - over 8 miles!
emoticon

That puts me on the south edge of the Smoky Mountain National Park, only about 7.5 miles from the TN/NC border, which is my next goal.

I feel the same way mixed nuts! I soooo would rather be on the trail right now and not stuck doing the 9-5 grind!

I got a phone call from my doctor this afternoon, apparently my cholesterol is high but I don't have specific numbers yet. I go back next Friday and I'll get the details then. So I am revamping my program and getting down to business!! I have been half-assing my program lately and slacking off. I know this though and am determined to STOP and get back on track today, right now.

I'm so glad to be on this journey with you all!

Way to go Mixed Nuts- I need to go home tonight-at work right now- and figure my miles out for the past week. I know I am not as far as you . My daughter loved NOC-spent a couple of zero days there (that's days you don't hike) .

What a weekend! We hiked and geocached for 5 hours today and yesterday! I sure got a lot of "intentional" working out in!

Tallies for the week are 8.97 miles! I am sooooo close to Blood mountain! The hardest part is just ahead emoticon

Where are all my hikers at on the trail?

Keep up the great work Cindy! emoticon I averaged about a mile a day this week. Not bad considering I SIT on my bum all day listening to people talk about their problems! I did have a few emergency's that kept me at work late and so I haven't intentionally walked since Monday. Plan to fix that tomorrow!

On my way home from work last night, I realized that I had now walked further (138 miles) than my daily commute (110 miles). Hmmm, that brings mixed feelings. Put in that context it doesn't sound like all that far... but when you are walking that is pretty good. Another thought, let's see, it took me 22 days to walk the 110 miles. Does that mean I only need to go to work a day or two a month??? That way I won't have to pay for all that gas!

OK, I know, dream on!

4 miles!! WOW! Great job!

I am only averaging about 1-2 miles daily. But it is what it is. No complaints or worries here, I am just grateful that I am able to do that much.

Spring is in close to full bloom here in east central Alabama. The dogwoods, azaleas, redbuds, etc. are all blooming. It is spectacular. Check out the link to Calloway Gardens just across the line in Georgia.

I found some great maps of the AT on the web.

I had a slow weekend and Monday. I will get back to more steps, more walking. It is just a hiccup. Today I walked at lunch for almost an hour.

Good walking to all!

For mileage, I have been using http://sherpaguides.com/georgia/mountains/
long_trails/appalachian_trail.html

It has a list of the GA mileage markers. Not sure what I am going to do when I hit the next state.

I am hitting Woody Gap today! Making progress, slow and steady!

As of today I have "hiked" 5 miles. I've been setting my treadmill to hill setting to get more of a feel for hiking. I hope to complete the 3.2 miles left to the start of the trail by this weekend. Happy trails.

Thanks! I am loving looking up where I am coming up to on the trail. It's certainly motivating! I went out tonight and walked in our neighborhood. I also had a packed day so my total mileage for the day is just under 2 miles. I'll take it. We are going to Gatlinburg this weekend and so there will be TONS of walking!!! I'm so excited!

Somnambulist, tracking anything is better than nothing. It took me almost 4 days to hit the trail! Good luck and keep moving!

Until I get a new pedometer, I am just going to count my intentional walking time. So its going to take me a few days to get to the start of the trail. I have a smaller pedometer that works better, I just need to get a battery, but I'm thinking it would be nice to have one that tracks mileage as well. Cheers to you all for your progress, and thanks for helping me discover this idea.

I've accidently reset my pedometer a time or two... Because I am short (5') and my steps are shorter, I use 2250 for a mile. That's as close as I can get on my pedometer. I'll be buying a new one soon & will try for more accuracy, but hey, the point is to WALK. If you keep increasing your steps you are doing the right thing, just be consistent.

Kyleona, you are making progress. Isn't it fun to look and see where you are, what is coming up?

I am having a blast & it is spurring me on to get out & walk, and find new ways to walk more. AND that is getting the weight to finally come off, if slowly. I am definitely a slow loser, always have been.

Have a great day & keep walking!

Jenny, welcome to the AT! I'm not sure which pedometer you have, mine allows you to enter your stride in so that it calculates more accurately. If you are just going with steps to miles, I would stick to the 2,000 steps=1 mile for now. Although that may not be relevant if it just resets itself! How frustrating!!!

As for my own progress, I have started walking with hubs during my oldest's baseball practice. So yesterday and today I hit over 2 miles which is great for me personally. So my total mileage so far on the trail is 10.48 miles! This takes me just past Hightower Gap. Working my way towards Gooch Gap Shelter then onto Woody Gap and my first break into Civilization! emoticon

Welcome to our hike! Where are you starting? Will you go south to north, or north to south? Without the weather considerations, either is possible.

Here's a hint. Put on your pedometer first thing in the morning & wear it all day. If you were on the trail, most of your steps would be forward, right? So we can do the same thing. Every step counts, even if they come faster when you do a dedicated walk.

That encourages us to figure out more ways to walk, even if it is just going the long way to the restroom. emoticon emoticon

Sorry I haven't posted for so long. It has been crazy at work, but at least I've kept walking! I've crossed the NC border! emoticon That was my first goal. I'm looking ahead to a stay at the Nantahala Outdoor Center & a paddle on the river (used to do white water kayaking, and this is a favorite spot!)

I'm thrilled that two more folks are walking. We will all get there at our own speed.

WAKS MOM- Thank you, I will definitely try to "hike my own hike" and not focus on the should of's, would of', must's and whatnots. The important part is the journey, not the destination and certainly not the timeframe.

I have been doing well all things considered, my journey is my own and for me.. it's all good.

How is everyone else doing?

Morning hikers! I have been thinking of my "trail name" and I have decided I shall henceforth be called...... (drum roll anyone?) Bearbait! I don't know, maybe it's a bad omen, but I like it.

I am going so slow! I am averaging about a mile a day, I keep this up and it will take me years to hike the trail! Trying not to think about that. Start looking towards goals that will get me motivated to hit the treadmill at night in order to get going. Today's goals are to go 3.79 miles at least so that I can hike to Long Creek Falls and back to the AT. Did you know LC Falls is one of the places where they filmed the movie Deliverance!!!! That movie absolutely skeeves me out! How cool though!

Made it to Blue Mountain Shelter-48.6 miles-built in 1988 by the GATC and the Forest Service, this shelter, located on a short side trail to the west, is notorious for cold north winds that blow up Blue Mountain from the gap below, but makes up for it offering spectacular sunrises on clear mornings. Water source is a spring located on the AT 0.1 mile south of the side trail to the shelter. emoticon emoticon Happy Hiking

emoticon TK421BETH, Welcome to the A.T. I just finished Bryson's book. It's a great read. I also just read Walking the Appalachian Trail by Luxenberg, which was really good, too. So we'll see you on the Trail!! emoticon emoticon

Hello, there! I hope you don't mind, but I am 'stealing' your idea about walking the Appalachian Trail. emoticon

A few years ago, I read this book "A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail" by Bill Bryson. The book is in the top ten favorite books that I like to read over and over again...it's pretty funny! I got my idea to walk that, and saw your post(s).

I started at Amicalola falls and did the 8.1 mile approach trail! I am using the internet for now but am planning on picking up the AT guide soon.

Thanks for the welcome!

Evening ladies! I am joining you all on this trek to Maine! I am still on the approach trail. I'm a therapist so I spend a LOT of time sitting during the day lol! I have started printing my pages to the farthest printer from my office in order to increase my steps! I did get on the treadmill this morning and did a half mile before getting the boys up for school. I planned on hitting the treadmill again tonight but my baby now has the stomach bug and I am playing nursemaid. My total mileage right now is 1.69miles but I am hoping to maybe hit the treadmill again after he crashes.

So glad to be traveling the same trail with you all!

Well I have done a total of 34.4 miles, which puts me just past Mountain Crossings at Walasi-Yi Center in Neels Gap. The AT actually goes though the building-this is the only place on the AT this happens!!! Happy Hiking emoticon emoticon

Thanks for telling me about the Walasi-Yi Center. Too cool! Hey, your mileage doesn't matter, it's keeping at it that counts! Right now, I'm thinking my goal may be to finish this by the time I retire in June 2013. LOL!

Mixed Nuts, how did you like the Walasi-Yi Center? I'm just a bit past Hogpen Gap on my way to Unicoi Gap. I'd like to take a sidetrail to Brasstown Bald and maybe also to the only "cloud forest" in Georgia. http://ngeorgia.com/ang/Brasstown_Bald

I impressed with your 4.6 mi average. I feel fortunate when I can get in 3 miles. Keep burning up the Trail!

Another two crazy days at work (plus story weather). I did't get to walk at lunch either day, but I still put in 3.8 & 4 miles. This puts me on top of Wildcat Mountain.

I've looked at my average miles in the past 10 days, since I started the virtual AT. It is 4.6 miles/day. Not bad for a "turtle" like me. I have always been slow but steady.

It's sunny out today so I plan to get out at lunch. (Also less likely to have meetings called over lunch on Friday.)

emoticon We are making progress! This is supposed to be fun, and reading about the AT is part of the fun. Since I'm a voracious reader I understand sometimes reading rather than walking. I want to set up my treadmill so that I can read as I go....

I didn’t get as much walking in as I hoped yesterday, had a 3 hour teleconference that started at lunch time (ate my food quickly before it started) and lasted until it was time to go home. By the time I get home it is dark, so I can’t walk outside. I need to get the treadmill set up for this kind of day.

I have to chuckle, I actually walked 3.8 miles yesterday, which two weeks ago would have seemed great. Now I want at least 5. But life happens and we have to deal with it.

I made it to Blood Mountain shelter on the trail. I may not get much further today, since bad weather is coming through & I will have to hunker down. If the weather goes through quickly enough I will walk this afternoon.

emoticon Mixed Nuts! You're moving right along! I'm just past Woody Gap on my way to Neels Gap. I found some sample pages on line from a book called The Appalachian Trail: A visitor's Companion that looks very interesting. I'm still reading in Bill Bryson's book. I'll bet if I spent more time on the treadmill and less reading I might get in 6 miles in a day, too! At this rate you'll be at Bly Gap long before me. Keep up the great strides!!!

Wow! I've managed a whole week walking, over 34 miles in a week. Yesterday I hit a new high, 6 miles! It's amazing what a goal will do for you.

Yesterdays walk took my through Woody Gap. Suches, GA is right off the trail & a spot to get “real food”, a shower, as well as pick up mail & supplies. Suches calls itself “The Valley Above the Clouds” because it is located at an elevation of 3000 ft. This part of the hike is said to have great views, some of the best on the trail.

Holistic5 told me that we through-hikers need trail names. She indavertently provided me with mine by giving me a "mixed nuts" Spark goodie. Oh, that is a good name for me, 'cause I am just a little different, quirky, mixed bag...of nuts!

Since I'm only 5' tall, my stride is even shorter, so you know I'm working in getting in my steps to make those miles!

Catching up on my progress on the trail. I managed 6 miles Friday - a really good day! That took me to Justus Mountain. Saturday was cold & rainy, plus I had a sinus headache. So I declared it a "down day", only walked 1.8miles. Sunday I got up & walked before church, then "around the block" after church to get to my car, and ended up making 4.7 miles, which puts me at Ramrock Mountain, just short of Woody Gap, and Suches, GA.

Come and join us in our trek!

I am finally on my way from Springer Mtn to Mt Katahdin !!!!!! It is said that if you are six foot tall and have a 27-inch stride it will take you 5,000,000 steps to reach the top of Mtn. Katahdin !!!!!So doing my math--I am 5 foot 4 inches- it should take me 5,150,000. Better get started !!!!

2179.1 miles from Springer Mt ,GA to the top of Mt Katahdin, Baxter State Park ,Maine

Did the approach trail which not all thru hikers do-it is 8.8 miles long and not officially part of the AT-but you do have to get to the start!

Total of 16.74 miles which takes me to just past Hightower Gap, the junction of USFS 42& 69-camping in the woods away from the woods away from the parking lot at the road.

7.94 of AT done !!!

Oh my, we are walking! I walked almost 6 miles yesterday - a new high for me! Today I hope to get in the same. Over the weekend we have rain predicted, so I don't know how many steps I'll get in. I will crank up the treadmill & walk on that.

I have made it to the trail to Long Creek Falls, 15 miles total, 6 miles N of Springer Mtn.

Please post good web sites so we can share.

Georgiatrails.com has great descriptions.

emoticon Cindy, thanks for allowing me to join you! I just finished reading Walking the Appalachian Trail by Larry Luxenberg and am starting A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. I don't have a guide so I'm learning by Google. I started from Springer Mountain on the 1st and I'm about 13 miles north of Springer Mtn on my way to Woody Gap. I'll bet you overtake me this weekend when my steps will be sorta few. Happy Hiking!! emoticon

Well, I received my Appalachian Trail guide, The A. T. Guide Tuesday, so I started my virtual “fantasy” trek of the AT. I’ve set up a spread sheet to track my progress. It took two days, but I’ve made it to the southern trailhead. emoticon

Check my progress on my blog, and join me in this fantasy trek.

This will take a while, my goal is to have gotten to my goal weight by the time I get to Mt. Katahdin.

Good luck and have fun!

Of course everything went crazy at work just as soon as I posted about waking the AT. I am tracking my mileage, but haven't set up a way to match it to the trail yet. I'm not sure Google maps is the best way, may use "hard copy" maps and or trail descriptions. I do so want to start, since this is when folks start walking (beginning of March at the earliest).
