Hi! I am new to Sparkpeople, but not new to weightloss or exercise (esp. walking). I have lost 120 lbs since July 2007, thanks to a great program and lots of walking! I love walking! Today I walked 10.4km (yes, I am Canadian!). I look forward to being a part of this group :)

I really love my goal.... it is so personal. Last night I was so frustrated because I knew I could not handle 4 km which is the next part of the trail so my husband suggested we do a different section where it would be possible to do just 1 km. We ended up doing almost 3 km and found a new park by the river. The dog had a gread time with a new dog we met and we saw the nest of a huge bird that I really want to go back and check out. Plus today we are hoping to canoe the part of the river we walked along because it is so remote and pretty. Do pick a destination. Even if it is virtual walking it is still fun. I have a map and a highlighter pen and I mark the date over the section I have walked.

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

Well this looks like a fun way to get motivated. I have been walking for over a month now and just love it. I find myself wanting to run, but I have a stroller and can't afford a jogger so don't suggest it. I want to figure out how to walk in a way that will continue to help me lose weight. I have learned that your body gets used to certain actions and I don't want it to become ineffective. I will also find a destination and start logging my miles till I reach it cuz that sounds like fun, looks like i need to buy a pedometer.

Hello again JUSTYNA7.

Not sure how new you are to Spark - I guess I could go look - but as I did in the other thread, I'd like ot encourage you to most definitely log your km's towards your 306KM goal wherever, but to walk in a group that is mutually supportive. We are over in the "Cooling off in Alaska" thread and I've really enjoyed and benefited from the support and good humor and encouragement that abounds over there. Please come and say "hey." "Hey" means hello in my neck of the woods!

Cheers,
Joan

This is exactly the spark page I am looking for! Hi I am new and I have a huge goal for myself. Wallking the Rideau Trail in Ontario Canada. It is 306 km following the Rideau Canal. The challenge for me is I have a knee replacement, need another and right now I have sore feet. Also, since I am not doing a virtual walk I need transport to drop my vehicle off at the destination of each segment and then drop me at the beginning. The hardest thing for me is asking for help and then because most of the trail is outback I have to be ready to finish however many km needed that day. Anyway, any time I do any of the trail I will be woo hooing. To date I have done just 24 km and that has taken me over 2 years with life in between. However I am determined to do this step by step. emoticon

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

Hi Skinnyme: Us virtual walkers like to set a goal either for amt. of steps taken or mileage walked. We do this as both motivation and fun.
We pick a place we have always wanted to visit or have visited. We then figure the mileage or steps needed to reach our destination this then becomes our goal.
Next we walk, some on treadmills, some in malls, some near our homes but we walk and track our mileage.
We then record our mileage how far we walked and distance we have left to travel to reach our goal. Simple and fun.
Since this is a virtual walk so you can walk across the ocean or to the moon (good luck with that one PHEW!!!) or to an imaginary place.
To help figure your mileage, if you walk your neighborhood for instance, then this can be done by a pedometer (a device that records # of steps walked and/or mileage.) or you can drive your route and check the mileage driven, or google has a pedometer site that has almost every city and the streets to track your mileage.
I use both a pedometer and the google site to plan my walks. I'm walking to SLC,UT. From Iowa (ok well i'll have to walk on water, floods)then when I reach that goal I plan to walk to other places I want to travel and visit. I write a storyline about my walk just for fun. You can see this on my sparkpage.
Some people choose their goals by throwing a dart on a map.
The team has challenges. Our june challenge is to remember the earthquake victims so some of us are also walking around china. See June challenges for this information. I'm doing the 38 mile challenge. Welcome to the team and good luck.

Hi SkinnyMe -

This works however you want it to work. Some folks pick a place to walk to that is meaningful to them and head out there. They track their mileage in a thread they create in the General Discussion area or in the sticky topic thread in general discussion. Others of us walk in a different location every month. This month we are walking around China in rememberence of folks affected the the earthquake this past May. We are all posting our mileage in the challenge walks section in the China thread. We have three different length walks to choose from in that thread, and if you want to, come over the walk with us for the rest of the month. It's nice to have company even on a virtual walk.
Cheers,
Joan
