Gift Astonishing:
1. Today I was trying to meditate and kept having thoughts about things to do, couldn't settle down. I asked the Holy Spirit to direct my thoughts and was surprised a minute later when my mind was filled with the word PEACE.
2. My son with autism has a real creative talent and passion for cooking and baking. (God-given talent, I believe.)
3. All of God's creation.

1) The most ASTONISHING GIFT of all: The Gift of God to mankind. Himself....in the form of a baby.
2) the second most astonishing gift from God was my daughter. A miracle baby !
3) When a disaster caused my husband to not complete school for respiratory therapy....we were out of money and out of options. And a friend of my mom who was very wealthy, loaned us the money for him to transfer to another program and finish school as well as paid our living expenses that were above and beyond my salary....And when she died and we called to get her husbands' address to send him the payment (a month at a time)...He told us she had forgiven us of that debt before she died. We were astounded and amazed. God is so good.

1. prepared a list of Christmas gift ideas and things we bought already. (E.g. olive oil from the Holy Land to support the Christians there)

2. made one for my mother too and printed it out for her, with family and her friends' names.

3. had Christmas cards printed from 2 of my watercolors. Selling them at my Arts & Crafts Society and got them in one gift shop so far! One is the background of my SparkPage.

3 gifts preparing:

For my parents we are preparing to buy them an IPad this year.

For my niece and her daughter we are preparing to ask what they want, so we don't have to guess this year.

For my MIL we are preparing to spend New Year's week with her.

We don't make gifts, I'm just not that crafty. So we are preparing to purchase (but haven't bought anything yet).

I am also going to my friend's Christmas party in December so she doesn't have to go alone.

I'm working on two knitted projects with the goal of giving them for Christmas.

the only other way I'm "preparing" gifts is just trying to plan and get hints as to what they would like. Somehow it gets so much more difficult when they get older...(and that includes my husband)

Three gifts: ugly and beautiful:

1. The formal dress I found... for $20.00 (beautiful)

2. My toes, which to me are ugly.

3. My hair which is thinning fast. I have it pulled back from my face today because I hate the way it looked this morning.

ugly and beautiful:
I dug out an old suit from the 1980's. The skirt fits me again (Yay!) The jacket has crazy huge shoulder pads (Yikes!) I think I'll take it to a tailor, though, and see if they can take in the shoulders and make it wearable. From the armpits down, it fits me. In the meantime I have a like-new skirt.

meds for RA. They are a lifesaver, but this suppressed immune thing is no picnic. I think I'm finally getting over this bronchitis.

That's all I have today.

my hair. Right now it is quite ugly....MTX is doing a number on it...and I"ve had to let it go gray because I can no longer lift my arms to color my own hair and can't afford to have it professionally done But it is a gift because I could be bald.

My daughter promised (2 days ago) to wash the dishes....she still intends to...but God knows when it will be because she 's at her boyfriend's house (coming back this evening.) Normally I would just do the dishes and be POed. This time I'm not budging. I don't care if we use every dish we own...SHE IS GOING TO WASH THEM LIKE IT OR NOT...SO it's ugly but it is still a gift (assuming she keeps her promise)

our beautiful Kitty Mayo. She was God;s gift to us and she has brought us so much joy.

I got a free coat in the mail today....it was a free gift if you placed an order (Woman Within) ...I badly needed a coat. I don't know whether this is a beautiful or an ugly gift lol....but it's what I needed so I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth.

Steroids...another ugly gift. But they've saved my life many times. They make me ugly....but this too shall pass.

Humble:

Hugs from my husband who was away for over a week.

When I talk on the phone to my teen with autism and ask how he is, then wait, he now (since I've been sick) will sooner or later ask how I am.

3 Gifts Humble

A friend of mine was moving away and we decided to exchange gifts...But the gifts were to be from among our possessions.

She gave me a vase I liked..and I gave her a hand-painted little box.

My daughter loves to draw and paint (and always has)...I love it when she presents me with one of her pieces of art....They are no longer so humble...but are still special.

I just knitted a scarf...It is humble because I made some mistakes in it and you can kind of see them...I'm trying to decide whether to give it to someone or keep it.....it is still pretty regardless of the error....but maybe it's rude to give something flawed to someone.

A gift Grateful; When my daughter volunteers to clear the table and do the dishes when I'm exhausted beyond words after cooking.

Three gifts in Christ.: His mercy as he pours out blessing rather than judgment.
The hope of heaven....the knowledge that this world is not the last word....and neither is this body.
the gift of Prayer. How awesome to speak directly to the maker of the universe.

(To those of you who do not subscribe to faith--thank you for your patience and for allowing me to post this.......)

NOVEMER 20: Gifts of Traditions

Getting the family (and friends without family) together to celebrate.

Playing games after the big meal.

My mother always starts to get her house ready for Christmas on Thanksgiving weekend.

I don't decorate much as it's too much to effort, although I always want to.

Is it like Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "costly grace" as opposed to his idea of "cheap grace" or moral laxity?

I'm still working on being grateful for RA. It is a goal of mine. I've only had a few years so far to work on it.
1. I am grateful that I went through 2 years of unsuccessful fertility treatment because it took that to bring me to accept adoption and strengthened our marriage.
2. I am grateful for my son, even though he has autism, extremely challenging behavior, learning disabilities, mental illness, etc. I love him, have great hope for his future, don't think anyone could have done much better than my husband and I and going through the hard times (fighting special ed. dept.) has strengthened our marriage.
3. I am blessed to be in a 12-step recovery program. Best life education ever.

NOVEMER 16: 3 Gifts hard Eucharisteo.

You may have to refer to Ann Voskamp's book "!000 Gifts" to understnad this one....What it means is "hard GRACe" ways that God works in us and in our lives that are hard for a season, but in the end accomplishes something good in our soul.

for me:?
1) this Disease. It is refining me and teaching me patience and perseverance as well as helping me to have compassion for others.

2) WAtching my parents get old. I know my time with them is limited and this has helped me to treasure them all the more.

3) The cold, deadness of winter.....Lit by the songs of birds and the rustle of leaves. The promise of Spring....lurking just underneath

I loved Trixie Beldon as well! And, the Merriweather Girls and Nancy Drew and Cherry Ames, etc.

Gifts of Remembrance

I remember my mum who instilled in me the love of reading and who taught me how to treat everyone as equals.

I remember my grandma who taught me how to play cards and how much fun it was to eat TV dinners when I visited her.

I remember my great uncle who took me to my first "rock" concert even though I thought he was really old and his generosity continued as he bought me all the associated loot, i.e. poster, album, t-shirt, etc. He was a lovely man.

Cynthia,
I don't think your interpretation is wrong. I just couldn't come up with things, or people in my life now, because it would sound like a broken record. So I went with what felt right to me.

I'm glad there are other Beldon lovers out there. Yeah, I haven't read them in like forever, but man did I blow through them back in the day.

Anyway...thanks Cyndi for getting it right

for today, the 11th of November:

Gifts of Remembrance

I remember my sister, who died way too young. Her smile, her love of books and music, her gift of grace.

I remember my grandmother, who was a little too round, but had a loving heart and a kind hand. Who was always there and would feed the masses (entire extended family) with joy.

I remember my 5th grade math teacher (Mr. Farley) who instilled a love of reading and mysteries. (Go figure, right). Every day after lunch he would read from a Trixie Beldon novel. I believe it helped to settle us down after lunch, but that one thing has stayed with me to this day.

I have a friend who makes a special gifft for the women who attend the Ladies'Retreat each year. Due to health problems I've only been able to attend once and I have a lovely cross stitched bookmarker for my Bible from that event.

I also kept a collection of my daughter's drawings and put them into a binder so that I can look back and watch her develop as a young lady and as an artist.

I have a small smoked glass bowl that one of my mentor/professors brought back wiht her from Finland and she said she bought it wiith me in mind.I was quite moved by that gift.

I can only gifts from the harvest as I have no answers for the other one.

1. I'm grateful that there are other grains than wheat since I'm sensitive to wheat.

2. I'm grateful that there is such an abundance of affordable organic produce now especially apples.

3. I'm grateful that I don't actually have to harvest food and that our supermarkets have a good supply to choose from.

Three gifts from the Bible.
This is hard...not becuase there are too few; but rather,, too many.
1) It shows me God's compassion ---He paid the ultimate price to pay for the things I deserved as punishment...and gave me HIMSELF in the bargain.
2) It gives me a life==a life with out sickness, pain or death...to enjoy for eternity.
3) Scripture is changing me as a person...making me feel safer more trusting and less worries in uncertain times...Giving me patience and strenght.

Gifts from the harvest
1) Lovely lovley gourdes and squashes...use them in smoothies and pies and all KINDS of things

2) I wish I had a fireplace or a woodburning stove. My frined has one and there is nothing cozier than stting in a recliner next to a crackling fire.

3) It is a celebration of ABUNDANCE in the face of a long season sometimes of want. We should always be thankful even when we have "only" faith to carry us through what's ahead.

sorry friends, I got behind myself a lttle bit and missed a day.

The gift for yesterday (th 9th) is three gifts of harvest.
And the gift for today is three gifts you got from the Bible. (If you do not have an answer for that last one, feel free to substitute.

sweet, salty and sipped

I'm grateful for the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies DH brought me last night.

I'm grateful for the feta, spinach and onion crustless quiche that's in the overn.

I'm grateful for my honey ginger green tea which is very sip-worthy.

I wish I'd paid more attention to this thread this week. Sorry. I will try to reply each day after this.

Sweet, salty, sipped

Sweet: I love a nice baked cinnamon apple.

Salty: Hmm... I don't do a lot of salty foods anymore. Probably would be an Uber Bar by Lara bar which is a little salty but oh so good.

Sipped: Chai tea... oh yeah either as a latte or just the tea in a cup. Yeah, I need to have one soon.

"something sweet, salty, sipped."
Something sweet: one of my morning iced coffee/cocoa banana, stevia smoothies...Wow do I ever want one now! OR it could be a kiss for my nose from my kitty..

Something salty. I am really not much of a salt eater....I just like a little spinkle on certain foods..For example a little salt and butter on a fresh eat of corn.

Something sipped would have to be one of my cups of my massive collection of teas.

November 7-- Gifts from My Windows

We were in the car a lot today, my gifts are from the windows of my car . . .

1. Main Street here in Tiny Town is so pretty in the fall. The colors are past their peak, but it was still just lovely driving through town this morning.

2. Saw a herd (is it a herd?) of turkeys right by the interstate today and it made me laugh.

3. Gas prices of $2.75 in the city today . . . that's a quarter less than here in Tiny Town. Nice to see the prices going down a little.

Gifts from my windows

I am blessed with a view of a small pond where egrets, ducks, and deer visit.

I am blessed with the view of the cool, windy day ( temp dropped 20 degrees) while I relax with a cuddly puppy on my lap.

I am blessed with a view of the 18th fairway which provides a wide open green space surrounded by woods.

Gifts from my windows.

My window here on the fifth floor of my hospital room , looks out on the employee parking lot. I am thankful for all these people 24/7 who are here for the purpose of healing and helping the sick...myself included.

There are a flock of swallows, sweeping and swirling around the "smokestacks"on the hospital....They look so free and graceful,,they are a gift of God to me---but I can't see them at the moment...it's dark out.

And I have to add a fourth gift. There is an incredible sunrise this morning...covers hills and lights up my room...

I am grateful for the night...when God turns the Lights out...so that we can have rest.

This is such a bad day for me to start this one as I have little thoughts of government right now but let's see what I can pull out of a hat (and not a rabbit this time):

1) That we, THE PEOPLE, are still backing and supporting our troops while government thinks they should have things taken from them.

2) That earlier this year I was able to get my disability compensation so I can afford to feed my family and help out my parents who have been helping me for 38 years.

3) That hopefully soon everyone will be able to have medical care. I don't think insurance should be a barrier with healthcare, but you can't tell a hospital that. Although I am also happy a term is for 8-years tops, I hope this medical coverage can really help people who need it, but shouldn't be FORCED or FINED to have it.

Related to the government:

- That people are fianlly starting to pay attention to what our "representatives" are doing, and holding them accountable for their actions, letting them know that they were elected BY the people, FOR the people.

- For all of our service members, active, Guard, Reserve, and Retired, who sacrificed lives, limbs and freedoms to serve and protect our country.

- That the furloughs are done (for a while, anyway) and we are back to work.

For freedom for the slaves--that the country has stood up for independence for all.

That Presidential terms only last four years.

Hi all!

It is November 5th and I am grateful for my positive attitude in the face of a stressful day. My grandson, who has Autism, became stressed out over his homework this morning and after trying his best to finish it, which he did, arrived late to school and got a detention. for it. He cried. He needs help with his agenda book and organizing and prioritize his time. He's getting there, but I felt so bad for him struggling so much. I understand what he is going through, but it affected me so. But throughout all this stress, I stayed strong and remained calm. I sought support and maintained a positive attitude in order to help him. Life can be hard sometimes. The difference between success and failure is attitude. Thank goodness I still feel blessed to have my grandson through thick and thin, we shall prevail!

I also feel blessed for having a wonderful son and daughter. They are so loving and supportive. They try their best to be the best in whatever they do. We are a small family and because of this we are that much closer. I have fostered a love for family in my children and I feel blessed that they have good family values. Not a day goes by where both of my children exchange hugs and kisses and say we love each other. It is indeed a lovely thing to behold.

Although Christmas will be a small one in terms of gifts, I know it will be a beautiful one. I am looking forward to our gift exchange. I love to give and receive gifts that are personal and touch the heart of my family and me. However small the gifts are they will hold a sentimental value for all of us. It's sweet to see a gift worn or on a shelf that has been there for years that fills the heart and the lives of our family day by day.

I am also very blessed to have my companion dogs. They are a great blessing. There is nothing more wonderful than to have your dogs come to you after they eat and give me affection. It's as if they are saying "thank you" for their meal. I know it is true. It is a blessing to hear the bark of my dog in the night guarding the house when they hear a sound that is unusual. Bless my dogs for being there for me!

You all have a great nights sleep. emoticon

Acorn Small (love it...very interesting description)

1. Twin pearls that my son found when he opened an oyster (at a store in Hawaii) for me. They are both pinkish in color, and roughly the same size, so I had them made into earrings.
2. Puppy dog snores...yes, I know they don't exactly fit in an acorn, but he is so cute, snoozing next to me, and I am grateful for him.
3. A small piece of quartz that my son gave to me when he was about 4 (he is 14 now). I treasure anything from him...except attitude, but I am hoping that is just temporary....until he is 30 or so...LOL

1) the return of a Martyr's Cross necklace that I never removed from my neck which was lost and so so thankfully found and returned.

2) My little baby's fist...curled around a finger 21 years ago.

3) My engagement and wedding rings neither of which fit these deformed hands anymore....

November 4- gathered, given, good

Gathered- two friends and I gathered for lunch to celebrate one of them returning to our area for the winter. We ate outside overlooking the shrimp boats coming in. I had shrimp tacos.

Given- problems with RA affecting my feet and there were two pairs of line dance shoes I could no longer use. I gave them away to two classmates and now enjoy seeing them dance in more comfortable shoes.

Good- I am blessed with a really good dog who is patient and cuddly when I don't feel well.

November 4-- A Gathered Gift, a Given Gift, and a Good Gift

Gathered-- the laundry gathered from each room in my house reminds me of how blessed we are with clothing to wear and how blessed I am with family to wear those clothes

Given-- I think this is supposed to be a gift given by me, but all I can think of right now is the gift of quiet time given to me this morning by my husband, who took the kids out to hike at the state park near us.

Good-- My husband is, aside from my relationship with God, the best gift I've ever been given. I'm so thankful for him. He helps me through so many difficult times.

GAthered: my church family gathering and worshiping...People who love me there and whom I love in return

Given: I think this must be different than "received" so I am going to put down a good gift that I gave someone that blessed ME the giver. Last Christmas, my daughter's 2st Christmas wiht her boyfriend (they are apart now but at the time, were happy) I gathered all of my daughter's Christmas ornaments from all the years of her life and wrapped them in fancy paper and put them into a decorative large box. She cried when she received them.

Good. A good gift. This has to be the gift of God to us of his Son Jesus. This is the only real, truly good gift

November 3-- Gifts that Begin with N

Necks to tickle (seriously, all three of my kids have the most ticklish necks; it's awesome)

Naps!-- yesterday I slept nearly 3 hours . . . and was still tired at bedtime!

Nourishment-- from all the delicious fall foods that are available right now.

I am grateful that I am losing weight and soon will have to buy smaller pants.

Hi everyone!
How is everyone?
This is a nice topic. :)

I am grateful that I have lost 13 lbs so I can look good in my new swim suit. It is reversible and fun to wear. I am grateful for the new wet suit top that was given to me. It's warm in the cold water and makes me look cool! Lol

I love clothes! I have a closet full of really beautiful clothes that I should be able to war in six to eight months. I'm so looking forward to wearing my waredrobe again

And most of all I feel blessed that I have SparkPeople to help me realize my hopes and dreams. This is indeed a wonderful place! emoticon emoticon

Ah, sorry missed the last line.

1. A good salad from El Pollo Loco... gluten free and filling.

2. Apples - so yummy and good for me, especially the newest variety I found the honey crisp apple.

3. Corn tortillas - so versatile and easy to use to make so many different types of "tacos" or sandwiches.

Cyndi, these are admirable gratitudes. But if you want to abide by the guidelines I set up...please look at my post (I will post it once a day)...It will give you a category for which you are to choose three things in that category for which you are grateful.

I just read a report saying that November is the most perilous time in terms of depression. And the same report said that if you list several things for which you are grateful every day you will become 25% happier. (I assume that is based on surveys because I don't know how else to measure happiness.

Anyway
To prevent us from falling into depression and diving headfirst into the pumpkin pie....I challenge you to check this thread out every day of November. And I will be providing prompts around which you are to formulate your gratitude list. So here we go, ready or not...
November 1st- list three things to eat that you are grateful for. (this one should be easy)
