No one ever tried to teach me to swim until I went on vacation with my cousins one yr. It was to late by then. I was petrified. I tried but couldn't even relax enough to learn to float.
If it is to be, it is up to me.
So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we have the key.

I was a city kid without access to any pools. I went to camp once a week each summer, and they had a lake. They attempted to teach me to swim but I was terrified of the water (My dad had once dropped me from his shoulders when hit by a huge wave in Lake Erie....I was two and from then on was scared of water). I can swim (without putting my face in the water) from one side of a pool to another, but it ain't a pretty sight. It is one of the greatest regrets of my life that I've never learned. I tried to find some adult lessons but to no avail. I took my daughter fro swimming lessons as soon as she could walk....I did not want her to suffer the way I had without knowing how to swim.
Umm... I've always been able to swim, since I can remember. We had a pond where I was born and they wanted to make sure I was safe. So I think my dad and then the YMCA taught me.

My dad taught my sisters and me, in a shallow and very cold trout stream that he dammed with rocks so the creek was deep enough for us to float in. First he taught us to float on our backs, then gradually introduced kicking, crawl stroke with breathing, and diving. We camped there 2 or 3 weeks every summer in elementary school years and learned more. Later we took Red Cross swimming classes to learn other strokes and lifesaving.

My dad took me out in the ocean & told me there were Alligators (my fear back then) & I
better swim-I've swam ever since-love it!

I don't remember anyone ever teaching me. I think I just got in with all my cousins. But boy could I swim. And I learned really early to open my eyes under water.

I had swimming lessons at our local public pool and I sure disliked the deep end. I can still see it like it was yesterday! I've always been an excellent floater with all my chubbiness, so that makes me feel safer. I have learned since those childhood years, how to swim, at least to save myself I hope!

My dad heard babies could swim and put me in the pool. I do not remember if babies can swim but I am here to tell about it. I do not remember not knowing how to swim. I taught my son to swim at 10 months so he would be pool or ocean safe with us living in Miami and his grandparents living the Florida Keyes on the water. I have not thought of these things in years...thanks for the memories.
I took swimming lessons at the park district / public pool every summer when I was growing up, then completed the lifeguard training when I was old enough.
