On August 10th, my grand total is 560.42 miles. I致e passed Knot Maul Branch Shelter in Virginia. Keeping steady but slow pace since the heat wave has slowed my daily mileages down.

Have fun tracking your miles. Mine are adding up so slowly because it's so hot here. By the time it cools off it's too darn dark to walk. Plus I walk with my dog so when she says "I'm done" we're both usually done since it's so hot.
Good luck on your journey!

Ladyvolsfan, that sounds like a scary experience! Especially for the driver. Your poor dad!! I
have made many treks out west and enjoy the higher mountains very much. I especially love that you can enjoy them from a longer distance than the smokies. You have to be on the Smokies doorstep to see them. Not so with the Rockies!

Thanks again for the great links. I didn't get any mileage today but plan to get at least 10 this week. Probably 3 or 4 days of 3 to 4 miles each. Looking forward to the next marker on the AT! :-) emoticon

I love the Rocky Mountains too. Mainly because they are so different and so much higher. We were once up on Pike's Peak when a snowstorm hit and had to be led down via caravan with rangers up front and at the tail end of the line. It was a nerve racking drive for my dad.
I spend time every year in the Smoky's and along the AT since my brother lives in NE TN. I just joined several groups and liked a couple pages on Facebook about hiking in the Smoky's - Day Hiking and the AT so I could learn more about the area. Hopefully I'll get some new ideas on where to hike next time I visit my brother.
Sounds like a great idea to have the map hanging on the wall. That would be a great way to track how far you've come.

Oh, and LJ, I meant to say hello to you as well! emoticon I sent you a goodie letting you know I just started out as well. Plus I agree that the Rockies (though beautiful) just don't have the same pull for me. I love, love, love tree covered mountains. :-)
Are you starting your virtual hike in GA or Maine? If you're starting in GA, we will be starting in the same place!

Thanks for the info, Ladyvolsfan! I just ordered the paper map of the whole AT and the larger map of the north GA & NC section of the AT since that is where I'm starting my virtual hike. I did 1.25 miles hiking Thursday to start my trek.

So, I started on Springer Mountain, GA and just passed the parking lot on my way to Stover Creek Shelter (parking lot is 1 mile from start, shelter is at 2.8 miles). This week, I will make it to Hawk Mountain Shelter Side Trail (8.1 miles total from Springer Mountain).

woo hoo!! Excited for my maps to arrive so I can create a collage/tracker board for my wall. I can't figure out how to reset my mile tracker to zero on the sparks fitness tracker without reseting all my other goals as well. So, I will have to do an independent tracking of my miles & location.

:-)

Have fun this weekend. I'm in the Rocky Mountains right now. They are...well, rocky. That is, before coming out here to be close to family, I was used to mountains that are forested and green. Out here it is rocky and desert-y. Mountains are just dirt and rock. Also newer, geologically speaking, so very sharp and ... you know... rocky. No doubt that is why they are so creatively named. Of course, there are forested areas, just not as many. I miss the sound of water. That's why I have getting fit and hiking the AT as my long-term goal. I want to hike the entire thing. I like the idea of having a map on my wall, too. Not a detailed one yet, just one to contemplate in moments of forgetting what I'm supposed to be doing.

One of my very favorite Smokies hikes is Big Creek near Cosby (northern NC border). Pretty easy and parallels a creek. Plus it is away from Gatlinburg, so not as crowded. Mouse Creek Falls is 2 miles in, so round trip is 4 miles. Very pretty iris and other orchids in the spring. just gotta watch out for occasional manure because it is a horse trail as well. :-)

The trailhead for the Bunion is just past the Sugarland visitor center. You hike the AT out to the Bunion. It's a huge rock formation and cliff. The day I hiked it, it was incredibly foggy so I couldn't see the bottom from the top of the cliff. Very disconcerting. But along the AT, the tops of the Smokies were peeking out of the fog. It was very beautiful. Not too hard of a hike though it was very rocky. 4 miles one way, 8 miles round trip.

Hello, team! I just joined & love this virtual trip on the AT! I definitely want to hike more parts of the AT. I have hiked to Charlie's Bunion in the Smokies, and it was so so incredible! I look forward to joining in on this challenge. It would be fun to buy a map of the AT to hang on my wall, so I would have a large reminder of my goal! emoticon emoticon

on May 18th, 2012 I am at 463.25 Miles. I crossed into Virginia today and am closing in on Damascus, Virginia! Wow! I can't believe I started my virtual hike at the start of the AT in Georgia and have walked my way into Virginia. I think it's amazing how far I've walked. To think back when I originally started sparkpeople in 2008 I could barely walk next door due to complications from gallbladder surgery. This just amazes me. I'm so glad that I found the virtual AT hike and have been keeping track of all that I have done. It makes me feel like I can accomplish anything.

emoticon Plenty of 'hiking' the past few days, but not a lot of progress with the trail miles....According to my pedometer and milage estimates, I am somewhere between Hawk Mountain Shelter ( mile 7.6) and High Tower Gap ( mile 8.1) .....not sure about the nearest shelter, but the weather is beautiful so probably will just look for a site to pitch my tent.

emoticon Well, all those stairs at the falls coming up the approach trail beat my legs up...so short day yesterday only made it to Stover Creek Shelter after crossing the parking area at USFS RD # 42 ......met some thru-hikers hiking SOUTH to the terminus on Springer to sign in and turn around to start their trek NORTH .... a few are here at Stover Shelter and no doubt will be ahead of me hiking today...

* pedometer for Saturday read: 6,456 but then again it is always a bit ahead of actual miles....maybe I need a GPS tracker?

Total miles:10.5
Actual trail miles: 2.5 - At this rate it may take me three years to reach MT K .....LOL

Well - Made it up the 8.3 mile approach trail from Amicola Falls and since those 600 plus stairs up the falls didn't kill me off, I might at least make it out of Georgia! Signed the register before leaving Amicola and signed in again once I got to the 'official' beginning of the trail. Took a pic of the plaque and enjoyed the views....bedding down in the Spring Mountain Shelter which is 0.2 miles to the right of the trail headed North.

Total miles today: 8.5
AT miles: 0.2

* My pedometer is reading 21,459 steps which = more than 10 miles walked today but I don't think it is 100% accurate. I've drove and mapped out milage and then walked the routes and pedometer always credits me with an extra 1-2 miles so, I'm 'camping' at Springer Mountain Shelter and calling it close enough.....LOL

Hi Ramona. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. We just got home today from the mountains; had a wonderful time. The Virginia Creeper Trail is so much fun. Went riding yesterday with my sister and her husband. My husband doesn't really have the energy anymore so he shuttled us to Whitetop and then picked us up in Damascus. It was cool, but still fun. On Friday, I hiked a short portion of the AT near Grayson Highlands with my brother-in-law and sister. It was so pretty that I wanted to just keep on walking. My BIL says he wants to hike the AT with me someday (my sister isn't interested so she wants to bring their RV and meet us at road crossings and towns). Hope we can actually do that one day.

I actually took my little video camera and recorded portions of the Virginia Creeper Trail last week and put a video together. I uploaded it to youtube and have attached a link below if you're interested. You really should try it sometime.

Have a great day!

I walked 3.83 miles today which puts me at 208.98 miles. I知 in NC now! My next trail marker is at Pecks Corner Shelter Side Trail which is in NC (MP 215.1).

Have a great time on the AT! You'll have to let me know how it goes. I've wondered about the Virginia Creeper Trail how it is. I still have to get a bike to get back in shape for that.

Take care and have fun!
Ramona

Wow, that sounds so awesome. I'm hoping to do a day hike on a portion of the AT next weekend when we'll be up in Whitetop, VA. We just got back from there today and I did get to do some biking on the Virginia Creeper Trail. Of course that's and easy downhill ride, but it was so much fun.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

Cindy

I've always wanted to hike up Roan Mountain. Maybe I'll see you there one day :-)

I started a virtual hike of the AT back on July 24, 2011. As of 11/14/11 I am at 177.76 Miles and just passed the Russell Field Shelter in Tennessee.

I dream of one day doing some hiking on the AT. My first place on the trail will be at Carvers Gap on the NC/TN state line up on Roan Mountain. My brother and I visit the rhododendron garden on Roan Mountain every year and I hope one day to be able to start with that section and walk some of the trail.

Good luck with that and I hope you get to get out there and hike the trail. It's a dream of mine that I'm hoping I can do in a few years.

Hi all. My wife said I could hike the AT in about 10 years. So instead I'll do it virtually. I came up with a treadmill plan that adjust treadmill elevation to coincide with actual trail elevation changes. Although it is only for the accent, descents will have to be walking on level ground. Working with back issues may slow me down but hopefully I can strengthen it and it won't be a problem. Join me if you would like.

Nick
