4/15/2014 - walked 1.2 miles just getting to and from the bus today - rode across town to take in a play at one of the small/experimental theatres in San Francisco.

Crossed from Georgia into North Carolina around Sharp Top and close to Sassafrass. Imagine that. From almost any angle, the view of Sharp Top leaves no mystery as to how the peak got its name. A shapely and graceful summit, Sharp Top is the first big climb to greet northbound hikers leaving behind Georgia on the Appalachian Trail. Out of Bly Gap, the trail turns northeast to climb steeply up a mountainside, punishing tired legs and demanding some after-lunch cardio output – this mountain is Sharp Top. Walked almost 4 miles today.

4/14/2014 - just a mile walking today, doing errands. Also 4 miles bike riding, but that is not AT hiking.

So we add 1 mile to the VAT, reaching 440.5, exactly where a powerline crosses the trail on the way to Iron Mountain Shelter, a mile further on.

4/13/2014 - San Francisco is having a cherry blossom festival at Japantown - so walked over for some asian lunch, then out toward Land's End for an organ concert. 8 miles.

Wow! Everyone's really getting their miles in now! I guess warmer weather is helping a lot! I know it is on my end. Great job y'all!

I finally crossed over into Connecticut yesterday! Woohoo! I am at 1,453.47 miles now. I seriously never would have believed I would have come this far but those little walks with my dog are adding up. I'd say my dog has been at least with me on 1350 of those miles too. She turned 12 in February so that's pretty good for her too. A lot of miles are missing because my mapmywalk app goes by GPS location. In the mountains a good signal is nearly impossible so unless I know the distance to my destination those miles aren't in here. I just add minutes walked. I'm thinking of getting something else to track but haven't decided yet.

4/9/2014 - Walked 8 miles today, to and from a movie theatre. Walk marked by lovely rhododendrons blooming in Golden Gate Park, and part of the time in the Presidio, now public and commercial space, but still lovely.

As of 5pm on April 6, 2014, I am at 1448.74 miles. Just 3 miles from the CT/NY state line!

Back to the Appalachian Trail. This is a beautiful hike through some really awesome states and scenery. I am gonna post from the beginning of the hike down in Georgian so I won't get confused. I will use my Striiv pedometer as a reference as it keeps a running total of miles. I have been hiking with it for 15 days. Here is how far I have come.

Thanks @DOUGDC! My dog and I added another 1.04 miles to our totals this afternoon before the thunderstorm hit. You're doing great too! I'm hoping to get a little hiking in this summer in June/July when I go visit my brother in NE TN. Maybe I can get back up to Carvers Gap for another hike on the AT - at least I've done part of that section and know what to expect. My knees are giving me terrible fits again with steps so I doubt going any further than last trip because of this big step up on the second knob. At any rate I'm hoping to get back to the Smokies for some more hiking there. Last summer we did three or four hikes there. The numbers are adding up!

@LADYVOL - Wow! The idea of reaching CT is awesome. One day. one day, I'll do that on the trail itself.

4/2/2014 - for today more shopping errands. There's a supermarket about 2 miles from the house. On the way back I had 26# of stuff in my backpack. Hey - it's mileage. Today's total was 5.1 miles.

Okay for y'all that are doing the Pacific Crest Trail there's a separate forum for posting mileages. So we can use that for the PCT and this one is only for the AT.

My additional miles:
3/31: 1.66
4/1: 0.92
4/2: 2.35

My total my are 1443.11 - getting closer and closer to Connecticut everyday! I just passed 1442.4 County 20 Pawling, NY - the state line is at just over 1451!

Sorry to hear your AT hike is leaning towards a no go DougDC.
Glad to see y'all are posting about doing the PCT. I've read two books about it. Sounds like a beautiful place.
I just finished walking around the neighborhood with my dog and added another 1.02 miles. Boy, can I tell I've been sick and still am. My times are terrible today - either than or my dog's slowing down but I'm thinking it's just me.
Hope everybody can get out and walk somewhere today.

Good job in doing the Pacific Crest Trail. I've read two books about the trail and it sounds just gorgeous.
I'm also doing a virtual walk across the US that started at the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia and I think ends in Oregon on the Pacific (can't quit remember). Anyway I'm about halfway across Missouri now. It's fun doing both walks.

after much googling and surfing I finally did find My Walking 4 Fun Page to start the Pacific Crest Trail with Sassifrasstea.

I am new to this team, but I started walking the Appalachian Trail in 2009. I walked about 140 miles then before I had to quit due to cancer. I am back and will start at the 140 mile mark if you don't mind. We were attempting to walk at least 6 miles a day in order to complete the trek in a year. I have had a broken pelvis, broken hip (hip replacement) and 4 crushed vertebre (repaired with bone cement) due to having bone cancer. Therefore I will most definitely not be walking 6 miles a day. 3/23: 1.09 miles - still not feeling the best but my dog & I made a quick round around the neighborhood today & yesterday. I am at 1433.93 and am just past the Morgan Stewart Shelter in New York. Less than 20 miles from the Connecticut state line!

Not walking weather for me.

3/14/2014 - Finally got out to simulate some AT walking. A 13.5 mile hike up about 2000 feet on Sonoma Mt. north of San Francisco. Cleared farmland, so no shade coverage. Finished by walking into town and finding a Peet's for frozen Chi Latte. Carried full pack - 32 pounds. Maybe I can lighten that a bit. And at lunch used alcohol stove to boil water for tea. Kind of like a trail day.

Brings VAT to 369.9, almost two miles past the Clyde Smith shelter.

So far my dog and I have walked another 2.41 miles around the neighborhood. It's cold, windy and started raining so we came in. Certainly don't need to get sick on top of all that's going on right now. I'm just a little over 7 miles from hitting the 1400 miles walked. Can't wait to get there!

on February 19th, 2014 I am at 1382.35 miles! I walked my dog around the neighborhood 2.86 miles today. I'm almost to 1384.0 Fingerboard Shelter, NY - I'm going to have to update my documents to show where I'm headed soon.

Great job Charming_Girl. I hiked on the AT at Carvers Gap in 2012. The views are gorgeous. I love that area.

I'm at 1379.49 miles now - I've been putting in a few miles this week with the warmer weather walking around the neighborhood.

Sunday 2.71 miles
Monday 1.03 miles just before dark (had MRI appointment earlier & did lots of walking in stores but that doesn't count here)
Today was 3.36 miles

2/16/2014 - out camping in prep for the AT hike. Big issue was the rain, but after the rain logged 5 miles going up and down the mountain side.

Brings VAT to 343.8, heading toward Curley Maple Gap shelter.

Glad to see y'all out walking. It's been icy and snowy here for a while so my walks are down to next to nothing. Plus I was in the hospital so that zapped them there too. Most of my walking lately has been in stores - my son & I go shopping but first when we get to a store we do a walk through and then shop later. At least that's some walking. My dog and I did manage a couple short walks this week - the cold temperatures are very unkind to me and I can't tolerate them any more. I did manage to walk my dog 0.99 miles today; yesterday we only got 0.19 miles in before we had a heavy downpour and at 32 degrees that's not a good thing; the day before we managed 0.97 miles. It's just too cold out there and we have to dodge ice/snow on the roads.
Keep up the great job y'all. I'll be so glad to see the ice & snow & cold leave! Happy trails.
