@Grizhicks that's great! Any hikes are great in my book! Love hiking in the Smokies and North Carolina. I'm only able to do short hikes so I do what I can. I've heard Clingman's Dome is rough, I've never been there. The hike to Abrahms Falls really kicked my butt majorly! Had an asthma attack at the falls and my blood sugar bottomed out, then I fell on the way back to the parking lot. Needless to say I collapsed into the car after the Park Ranger took the information down because they had been notified by some other hikers that I was having problems. They were getting ready to send out a search party when I got to the parking lot with my brother and another hiker. I don't ever plan on a repeat of that. This year we had one rough trail - turns out the sign said strenuous - I did what I could and turned around and came back and just walked the easier part of the trail a couple times while my brother went on.

We spent the past week in the Smokies, and did the following:
7/28 -- hike up to Clingman's Dome (1 miles round trip' kicked my butt)
7/28 -- part of night hike in Cades cove (1-1/2 mile)
7/30 -- hiking around Sugarland Visitor Center (1 mile)

as of July 7th, 2014 I am at 1580.05 miles! I just passed the Mark Noepel Lean-to Side trail here in MA! The Vermont state line is at 1592.8 miles so Im getting closer and closer!

7/4/2014 - walked downtown for the fireworks. And back. Buses really crowded going home. Fitbit recorded 5.3 miles.

Brings VAT to 671.6, past the Laurel Creek Shelter, and across the footbridge that crosses Sinking Creek near Newport VA.

It's amazing to think that wandering around town and on a few local hikes I've covered as much distance as a quarter of the AT. I really look forward to doing the full AT trip one summer soon.

Was just thinking about doing this on my log; greeat idea!! Just getting started: 1st mile yesterday.

While hiking the AT has been a 40+ year dream, it got moved to the "front burner" this past week, and the goal is 2018, after retiring sometime in late '17 or early '18. At this time I'm planning a "cool breeze" (see ATC website; 1/3's, middle, northern, southern); so I'm starting at Kent, CT and SOBO. That puts me 1 miles south of CT-341; only 2184.9 (from the 2013 data) to go. -- Grizhicks

6/4/2014 - walked with a friend from downtown San Francisco up to the Golden Gate Bridge. Windy and chilly. That hike was 5.8 miles, and total for the day (fitbit) was 9.4 miles.

Adding 9.4 brings the VAT up to 554.4 miles, not quite to the peak of Brushy Mountain, and right at the O'Lystery Pavillion campsite (private - AT hikers not allowed; but the Knot Maul Branch Shelter is only 2.2 miles further along the trail).

5/25/2014 Visited the Carneval in San Francisco. Fitbit credited me with 5.8 miles (including some shopping),

Brings VAT to 502.3. Broken 500 miles! and am just about at the saddle between Mt. Rogers and PIne Mountain.

I love going around old Native American ruins. Sounds like a fun week. It's truly amazing how far back things go once you start exploring and learning. I'm trying to decide which fitness tracker to get me so I can actually see how far I really walk and not just these short walks with my 12 year old dog.

I checked my progress last night and I'm at 1502.09 miles - just 0.31 from the Massachusetts/Connecticut state lines. Darn! I wish I had checked yesterday and I could have squeezed another short one in before it got too dark.

5/21/2014 - Will be backloading some miles from a week's vacation in Arizona and New Mexico, much of which was tramping around among old native american ruins and realizing how far back American history goes.

I've got Fitbit to estimate milage now, so I'll be listing that. Today my travel was 10 hours of driving, and no special walking. Fitbit logs 1.6 miles for me...

That brings the VAT to 485.1, a couple miles past the Lost Mountain Shelter.

I've been so slow in racking up miles because I can't find anything comfortable to wear on my feet until these blisters completely heal. At any rate I'm at 1490.65 miles now. Whew!

5/8/2014 - Fitbit recorded 6.7 miles, part of which was walking on errands.

Brings VAT to 483.5, a little past Lost Mountain Shelter in VA.

It seems, with Fitbit, mileage will accumulate faster as it records all activity during the day, and not just walking outside toward a particular goal.

5/7/2014 - Fitbit says I walked 5.7 miles today: 12,750 steps. 1-1/2 miles were an intentional walk. The rest was logged in the house, and in three different big box stores, shopping.

That brings the VAT to 476.8, exactly at the Saunders Shelter, with Trail Days in Damascus now far behind.

5/6/2014 - an out-of-town friend visited in San Francisco, and we walked around through Union Square, Chinatown, and along the Coastal Trail with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge. 9.4 miles in all.

Brings VAT to 471.1 - which puts me directly in Damascus, VA - maybe in time for Trail Days! It's going to be some time, now, before I get out of Virginia - but finally in the long, sort of flat, middle portion of the trail.

Great job Doug! I have major busted blisters on both heels so my walking has been limited because I can't wear my shoes. I have to wear backless shoes which aren't the best for walking or walking my dog. I've managed 2.94 miles the past two days which is better than nothing but less than I'd like. Keep up the great work!

Opportunity to do some walking with a friend today. And walk home from an errand. Total of 12.1 miles.

My walking is down considerably because everyone's mowing their yards these days. When one gets done another starts. I hate having asthma and allergies and being allergic to grass and some weeds. I haven't even checked to see where I'm at since last post.

4/22/2014 - logging walking miles is going to be a challenge now that I've gotten my bike (Emmett) in shape for errands here. But, today my local shopping was on foot. 1.2 miles.

Crossed from Georgia into North Carolina around Sharp Top and close to Sassafrass. Imagine that. From almost any angle, the view of Sharp Top leaves no mystery as to how the peak got its name. A shapely and graceful summit, Sharp Top is the first big climb to greet northbound hikers leaving behind Georgia on the Appalachian Trail. Out of Bly Gap, the trail turns northeast to climb steeply up a mountainside, punishing tired legs and demanding some after-lunch cardio output this mountain is Sharp Top. Walked almost 4 miles today.

Wow! Everyone's really getting their miles in now! I guess warmer weather is helping a lot! I know it is on my end. Great job y'all!

I finally crossed over into Connecticut yesterday! Woohoo! I am at 1,453.47 miles now. I seriously never would have believed I would have come this far but those little walks with my dog are adding up. I'd say my dog has been at least with me on 1350 of those miles too. She turned 12 in February so that's pretty good for her too. A lot of miles are missing because my mapmywalk app goes by GPS location. In the mountains a good signal is nearly impossible so unless I know the distance to my destination those miles aren't in here. I just add minutes walked. I'm thinking of getting something else to track but haven't decided yet.

4/9/2014 - Walked 8 miles today, to and from a movie theatre. Walk marked by lovely rhododendrons blooming in Golden Gate Park, and part of the time in the Presidio, now public and commercial space, but still lovely.

As of 5pm on April 6, 2014, I am at 1448.74 miles. Just 3 miles from the CT/NY state line!

Everyone is making such good progress on their hikes of the AT. Way to go! Keep up the fantastic job!

4/5/2014 - two miles today with a visit to a dance presentation and a little shopping.

Brings VAT to 411.6, which gets me by the Moreland Gap Shelter but not near anything else of note. Next shelter is 8 miles down the road.

Back to the Appalachian Trail. This is a beautiful hike through some really awesome states and scenery. I am gonna post from the beginning of the hike down in Georgian so I won't get confused. I will use my Striiv pedometer as a reference as it keeps a running total of miles. I have been hiking with it for 15 days. Here is how far I have come.

Steps: 119,336 steps
Distance: 47.2 miles
Burned: 5,835 cal (1.67 lbs)

Thanks @DOUGDC! My dog and I added another 1.04 miles to our totals this afternoon before the thunderstorm hit. You're doing great too! I'm hoping to get a little hiking in this summer in June/July when I go visit my brother in NE TN. Maybe I can get back up to Carvers Gap for another hike on the AT - at least I've done part of that section and know what to expect. My knees are giving me terrible fits again with steps so I doubt going any further than last trip because of this big step up on the second knob. At any rate I'm hoping to get back to the Smokies for some more hiking there. Last summer we did three or four hikes there. The numbers are adding up!

@LADYVOL - Wow! The idea of reaching CT is awesome. One day. one day, I'll do that on the trail itself.

4/2/2014 - for today more shopping errands. There's a supermarket about 2 miles from the house. On the way back I had 26# of stuff in my backpack. Hey - it's mileage. Today's total was 5.1 miles.

Brings VAT to 408.1. about a mile short of a campsite I may one day get to use.

Okay for y'all that are doing the Pacific Crest Trail there's a separate forum for posting mileages. So we can use that for the PCT and this one is only for the AT.

My additional miles:
3/31: 1.66
4/1: 0.92
4/2: 2.35

My total my are 1443.11 - getting closer and closer to Connecticut everyday! I just passed 1442.4 County 20 Pawling, NY - the state line is at just over 1451!
