SUZISIMONE1 - I know where you are, most people don't understand us. It is so hard to pull yourself out of depression and make everything right. Take one step at a time, working on what you think you can over come first. Each step you conquer, you will fell a little braver to move on. You will also gain motivation. Everything doesn't happen over night, it takes hard work on our part. Tackle one problem at a time and soon you will be able to handle everything.

Depression is the impression left by fear. Be willing to fight the fear. Conquer it with love.

really, you need to look within for your motivation - it may be a holiday - it may be better health! If you check out the success stories in the tool bar above and also read the articles on Motivation in the Healthy Lifestyle section, I am sure that you will find something that will spark your motivation! As far as food is concerned, have you got a hobby? Find something to do with your hands other than putting food into your mouth. Sometimes going for a walk and don't have any money in your pocket so you aren't tempted to 'buy a treat' while you are out and about works. It is possible that you may need a therapist to help you through this - there are those who specialize in treating those with eating issues, but often those issues stem from baggage. It also sounds like you could do with an appointment with your Dr. Explain to him/her what is happening because it sounds like a medication review is in order. Remember, too, that the longer you stay away from your Pilates, the easier it gets to stay away!!!! Try to make it a habit - force yourself to go if need be!!

Good luck, and welcome to SP AND our team :-)

Hi everyone. I am new to sparkpeople and look forward to meeting some great people here!. I have struggled with depression and anxiety and find it hinders my ability to lose weight. Lately I have been eating everything in sight! Like food is the only thing to provide me pleasure. I also have decreased motivation and have not been showing up for pilates class lately. I feel like I'm gaining weight instead of losing it and want to turn things around before they get worse. Anyone have tips on how to re-motivate oneself? Thanks!

This past week was so hard with very difficult family news. One day I spent in bed, only time I got up was to get McDonalds. Although it was hard and slept instead of working out (b/c it makes me happy) I didn't gain as much as I thought i had. I felt like I had gained all my old weight back. I just have to remember that working out helps me and sleeping makes me feel worse. These next few weeks will be a true test for me :(

e some one help I cant enter any where here. I want to track my weight and mesourmentes and can't I only get tones of advertisemtns. Maybe something it's wrong with my computer. some body does not let me in here. I do't know how I am able to write here right now. I am really going crazy. I was in SP years ago it was much easier then. there are all this popups that tell me press here or there or something . but I am about to give up . This is at least my thirth letter asking for HELP

I started a month ago , but I didn't go nowhere.
Why? I am finding everything I do tiresome and very difficult. I am trying to continue and get somewhere with my fight for a better life. My health has been going down in the last 5 years. I am 73 and recently I am experiencing quite a bit of pain with this injury of a sciatic nerve. Of course that has nothing to do with my continued to eat things are not beneficial for me. I believe depression is the cause of wanting more sweets, is my weakne

Have hard days when time of month anyone else? I am not thirteen, but my doctor and I been talking about these awful mood swings and crying spells I have when I am about to get my period. Something called PMDD I'm seeking treatment for. It seems I have a double depression this time. I am taking iron as well as anemic when heavy flow. Perhaps I'm not taking enough iron? It is hard on your stomach. I take other vitamins as well. Exercise helps alot. I still get really low, tired, and sleep alot. Anyone else heard of PMDD? Gonna talk to the doctor again as I've been tracking my monthly cycle and it has been happening for quite some time now. I hate it. emoticon

Hello I'm new to the team,in fact this is my first post/reply. I'm running around the site with my head cut off not sure really where to start????? So please help this new be if you dont mind!! I'm 33yrs old w/3kids and married for 12yrs now together almost 14yrs. Last summer i started to go to the YMCA That's 2 blocks from me and just jumped in not really knowing what to do and no support what so ever. The main reason i started was my PT was an hour away it was easier to do the excises myself.I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, nerve damage due to spinal fusion plus i weigh 212 lbs and I'm 5ft 4inch so i really need it.So i lose no weight but went from size 18 to a size 14 from doing treadmill and weights plus i had one of those balls you can do floor exercises on and i walked in between days.I was eating less by portion my meals and no pop anymore. Well i ended up having issues with my husband and got major depressed was so happy and it felt so good to lose those inches. I had no support and i ended up having female problems and the Dr. did a laposcopy surgery on me i gained 20lbs and I'm back to an 18 and hurting more than ever and so mad i cant even look in the mirror!!! Plus my 12yr old daughter is almost 6ft tall and weights 200lbs and shes so beautiful she is tall n curvy but I'm no good role model to her so this is important so i can help her by her seeing me do it. Thanks for reading=) Jessica Agee emoticon

Dear Team, Thank you for the team goodie. I need to get off my butt and exercise. Everyday I make excuses and then wonder why I'm not losing anymore weight. I think its my depression . I always feel better after I exercise. I will be doggy sitting for the rest of the week so, I'm hoping I will take her for a walk everyday. I have a fenced in yard so I have to talk myself into it. I wish the exercising would be a steady part of my life. I think when you suffer depression it loves to take over your life. Thanks for listening

I hesitated joining this team, but hey, there's no getting around the fact that depression and anxiety has alot to do with when or even if I get something worthwhile started, especially for myself. I'm low-income and am trying to help raise 2 GDs (5 & 6) with my 33yr old son. At 68 It's a far cry from the retirement I'd envisioned, but at least keeps me out of bed -lol. I'm going to need a lot of support since there's no one around here to get it from. I mostly get expectations that aren't very helpful, if you know what I mean. Friends are very welcomed and I plan to answer any comments and/or notes as best as I can. My Spark page is up and ready for all who wish to come by. Thanks for listening and hope to see y'all soon. I probably won't come by everyday, but It won't be too far between. Y'all hang in there and keep at it. Hopefully, I'll be right behind you :) ~ GIM

Hi everyone. I am not new to SP but new to this team. I've been severely depressed for several weeks now. It is very upsetting to be going through this process. I absolutely hate it but know it's a process. I've been off all week and finding it incredibly difficult to do anything but sleep or just lay in bed all day. As I said, I hate it. Everyday is better than the day before but it is still slow moving. I know I have to go through it and be patient. This just isn't me. There's so much that I could and should be doing -- I just get too tired or find it impossible to even begin.

I'm glad I've found this group and hope to embrace a new journey.

Thanks to all.

Chloe, I completely understand where you're coming from as I am there myself.

I grew up "normal sized", but in a house where my father decided that 5'9" and anything over 130 lbs was too much and I needed "help". He imposed a daily ritual of extreme exercise and added more exercise as a punishment. I hate doing any kind of exercise to this day. He also made comments as to how disgusting I was, how fat I was, and had no problem letting me know I was eating more than he thought I should be eating (in public and at home). I guess after I got out of the house and the rigid control wasn't there, I took the opportunity to have all those things I wasn't allowed to have, before.

I am now 24 years out of their house (I'm 45 yrs old) and I still am dealing with the issues of my years at my parents house. I don't know how to beat this. I don't know how to get it out of my head. I have a food addiction.

I've tried therapy, but as a military wife, we move often and I hate starting all over and re-building that relationship. I can't keep the problem food out of the house b/c my husband has to have his snacks and candy. While most of his stuff doesn't bother me, I have to make some form of his (red) meat and starches to keep him happy. That's where my problem is, the meat, potatoes, pasta, butter, etc. BTW, he can eat whatever he wants and not gain a pound.

It would be nice to know I'm not alone in my struggles. Even though our history (stories) may be different, to know someone else is fighting the battle does help.

Sorry If I rambled too much. I'm just tired of pretending all is ok, when it's not. I'm not suicidal, but I am unhappy.

Thanks.

P.S. I am new to the group, as well.

Dear Chloe: I can really sympathize with you, as we have some challenges in common. I've been heavy since I was little, too. Also, I've been struggling with depression for years now. I'm not sure exactly what kind of support system you crave, but I can assure you that you'll get out of the experience just exactly what you put into it. Please don't dismiss this as a platitude, it's a law of nature. There are all kinds of "kick starts" and tips on the site to get you on track and keep you there. You've only to resolve that you mean business: That you're seriously contemplating losing weight and keeping it off. If your depression is discouragement, find encouragement where you can, here and elsewhere. If it's clinical, don't be afraid to ask for professional help. That's the best I have for now. Hope it helps. Taffy

Hi Chloe - welcome to our team. I am wondering if you have discussed your weight/depression issues with your Dr? The reason I ask is that often there are medical reasons for the two and simple bloods could possibly diagnose them. Hypothyroidism is one, and PCOS is another. There are other things too, but that is a good starting point.

I would be inclined to seek the help of a Therapist to help you with your self-esteem and to provide you with the tools to help you get through your emotional life. Your Dr will be able to refer you to someone qualified in this area.

Of course, we are here to help and support you too, so don't go being a stranger.

There are some things that you can do for yourself. Ensure that you eat a mainly very healthy diet - particularly with good protein and lots of fruit/veges. These have nutrients which help with our mental health, and also our physical health. At the same time it helps toward weight issues. Use your Nutrition Tracker so that you keep on course in that area. Ensure that you get exercise. If you don't do any now, just starting off with little walks and getting up out your chair more frequently and moving around is a good start. Just start this journey off with baby steps, and only when your mind/body is used to the changes, add something else to the mix.

We must all start off with the first step, and taking it gently is the best way to learn healthy new habits, as we gradually lose our old habits. It DOES work, and you may even find that you start to look forward to it :-)

Take care,
Kris

Hi I'm Chloe. I've been dealing with my weight since I was a kid but now adding depression on top of it has really taken it's toll. I've never been able to lose weight and now with my depression and extremely low self esteem I feel more lost than ever. I'm really hoping this site will the the kick start I need and this group could be the support system I crave.

Hi, Cherilynne: I agree with Slimmerkiwi: Medical and/or Psych intervention might be just what you need. I've been diagnosed with "dysthymia": chronic low-grade depression. I also have anxiety without panic attacks. I've had to train myself to use every coping trick in the book. Truth is, I'm still learning. I also depend on medicine to deal with depression and anxiety, either daily or as needed. It helps to keep things in perspective. If you can't pin your blues down to anything specific, it might be a chemical inbalance in your brain. This was suspected in my case. Anything could cause this: sleep problems, poor diet, whatever. I have sleep apnea and obesity. So take heart, and decide to intervene for your own good. I'm not sorry I did it. Taffy

Hi Cherilynne - I'm glad that you joined this team :-) You don't mention if you are having medical/psychological intervention for your depression. If you aren't, please make an appointment with your Dr and explain to him/her how you are feeling. It may be that some bloods will be taken to rule out medical issues contributing to this. Also, while you are at that appointment, please ask for a referral to a therapist. This can be extremely beneficial because you will be given a lot of very good tools to help you when you are feeling this way. Breathing techniques is one such tool. We don't NEED to have a apparent reason for feeling blue - sometimes it is hormones, and sometimes it is an underlying emotional factor that we aren't even aware of. This is where seeking that help will benefit you strongly.

Of course, Dealing with Depression can help you heaps, too, because you will get lots of support but for that to happen you have to participate in the message boards. You will get the best support if you either create your own thread because then it will initially go to all members subscribed to receive posts, whereas here it is only those who have responded. An already existing thread that gets a lot of coverage and support is "Help, I'm having a Bad Day" which is a sticky on the main Dealing with Depression page.

Take care,
Kris

Hi my name is Cherilynne and I joined this team because I suffer from what I would call "mild" depression. I never get so bad that I want to hurt myself but I have a real hard time making decisions without feeling overwhelmed and I feel blue a lot for no reason.

Hi, Kris: I peeked at your sparkpage. Very nice! Good to note you live in Auckland New Zealand. I hail from just south of Boston in the good old USA. Appreciated your encouragment and have been meaning to get back to you. Think it might be helpful to stay in touch. Taffy

Dear SinCityAngel: From the tone of your email, it sounds like you could use some honest encouragement. It's good to note that you've beem a "sparker" since 2006. I'm new at this. I've been at it for several weeks. I'm also in the process of organizing my SparkPage. Sorry about your family. I've found that if you want encouragement, give it. There's no guarantee you'll get it back, but you can feel better just knowing you can encourage others and yourself as well. Good luck with the job hunt. The language you use can have a telling emotional effect on your mind: Say you're "between jobs". Enough said, people get the message. This holds out hope that you're not permanently unemployed, just temporarily. Also, If you say your family gives no support is like saying they've thrown you out on the street. At least you still live with them. But I leave this up to you. Please be assured of my moral support.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this group but have been on spark since 2006. I am currently having the worst time with depression I have ever had. My Dr is trying to adjust my meds, but I need to do my own part in wanting to get and feel better. I'm in the process of updating my sparkpage and would love all the support I can get. I'm 33 and live with family that is not supportive at all, in Las Vegas. I'm currently unemployed and would love a job,

And in the end you'll see.YOU WONT STOP ME!

Hi again, Claudine: Good to hear from you again! Glad you have a supportive family. Hope the surgery went well, and that it helps. Your doc sounds like a real wiseacre, but we can give him and you credit for a sense of humor. Between an American school in Haiti, and 20 years in the U.S. I think you're probably right about your American values. I imagine you and your husband will become more comfortable with time. With time you'll get much closer, and be able to lean on each other more and more. That's good, because with out him you might be more discouraged, but with him you should recover from the hassles of depression more easily. Again, please feel free to email me again, as I will do my best to answer. Take care, and Good Luck. Taffy

Hi Taffy and SlimmerKiwi,

I appreciate both your posts; I guess I never realized the toll it would take on me, moving around so much--marriage is also an adjustment, but the first time I feel like I have family that actually cares about me, and that's a good change!

I just came from surgery also, which doesn't help...the doctor was nice enough to comment the following regarding me being from Haiti: "Hades...well, welcome to Hell!" Real nice...I've been in the US for 20 years though and I went to an American school in Haiti and feel that my values are very American. How do I convince others to treat me with respect and the same, although my ethnicity is different. That is a good question probably a lot of foreigners and biracial people have to live with nowadays. Things have gotten way better than when I first moved to the states...I know now that I will stay put, get some roots in the community and not move afterward....my depression is a lot better today...I went for a 10 minute walk as that's all the activity I could do....I hope these conversations will get easier for me and my husband to acknowledge as he is caucasian American; I think a lot of this is new for him too....we do love each other a lot and I can't imagine my life without him, I would be lost..

Hi Claudine - It must seem very strange and confusing for you in a new environment and newly married. There are loads of adjustments to be made which doesn't make it any easier when suffering from depression.

Are you able to get out and join some groups? Perhaps sports of some sort, or you and your husband join a dancing club (good way of getting fun exercise and quality time together) or some classes of some sort - perhaps a particular style of cooking, or scrap-booking etc. It is a good way to meet people and also give you another interest.

You will find that if you start your own thread, and give it a catchy title to gain more people's attention, you will find that you will get lots of support and perhaps some really great ideas to boot. This thread is only found now if people scroll through the main Dealing with Depression page, or have responded previously.

Good luck,
Kris

Hi. Claudine: I very much appreciate your response. It sounds like you've been given several interesting challenges. Moving from Haiti to NYC to Columbus must have been quite traumatic, culturally and emotionally, and to marry to boot! I think you may want to network beyond this one website in order to make good new connections. Thus you may find the kind of support you really need. You may need to be patient with your husband; he may come around. I had to lean on my siblings for emotional support, only to discover we were struggling with many of the same emotional issues. We came out alright, though, and we're none the worse for wear. As to options, don't give up on any possibility. You may find something you overlooked before. Email again if you think it will help. Best of luck. Taffy

Hi Taffy,
I can relate to a lot that you are dealing with, personality wise..I hope it will get better...I posted on here before and was happy to get some feedback from others...my goal is to eventually blog about my experiences, but while I'm on the low-tech side, I appreciate being able to post and communicate with others in this forum..Right now, I feel very isolated, no family support either, and being new to the Columbus, OH region. I just got married and feel like my husband is not very supportive emotionally...I do think he cares, but just doesn't know how to help during this very challenging time of adjustment. I am in therapy, and feel a bit uncomfortable with a male psychotherapist...but think he is effective. Maybe it's just me...wish I had more girl friends to relate to..I always seem to end up socializing with the opposite sex and don't get much support from women, which is very different to my younger years. I love my husband very much and want things to work out...I hope I can make the adjustment to a new community, away from my life in NYC, where I lived most recently. I am biracial, from Haiti, and to top it all off, don't have any contact or support from my family and friends from home. I feel trapped in an alternate universe of isolation and few connections..hopefully someone out there cares or relates and can show some support...I'm really running out of options...

Hi, Crunch41. I too have been on medications for many years (13 now) and have found out that I cannot function without them. Between them and finding this site, I am slowly working on keeping an even keel. Welcome to the team. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hi Taffy - It's nice to hear from you. This team is a VERY supportive team and also very friendly :-)

I agree about the "setback" thing - I actually believe that often setbacks are soul-developing altho' we don't tend to see that at the time. I have had many myself, but if nothing else, they have taught me to look outside the square, and it is amazing how if we allow this to happen, we can become our own efficient problem-solvers. This applies to most facets in our life whether it be financial, emotional or physical.

I look forward to reading your SparkPage when you have it up and running. As Pam mentioned, you will get loads more support that way!

If you have any questions just ask - there's usually someone around so response won't be far away.

Take care,
Kris

Hello TAFFY,
Welcome to SparkPeople and to the Dealing With Depression Team. We are glad to have you in our group. You will meet a lot of very friendly and caring people here on our team. We are here to help you in any way that we can.

I am glad that you are doing well with your therapy. You are right, 'a setback is not the end of the world, but rather a chance for personal growth.' NOTHING is the end of the world, and usually in time, most things do work out. Sometimes we just have to be patient.

Our members would love to get to know you. If you would get your SparkPage up and running, we could post supportive and encouraging comments there and learn more about you.

Take care, and keep in touch with the team. BEST WISHES in reaching all of your goals.

Hello, everyone: Very much appreciate the email from WORKOUTWITHPAM Think it's about time I introduce myself to the group. I've been dealing with depression, anxiety, anger, and a bad attitude for years now. I struggle with pessimism, as well. I have a lot of negativity, cynicism, and other bad emotional baggage. But I am in therapy, and am slowly coming to realize that a setback is not the end of the world, but rather a chance for personal growth. Any feedback will be very much appreciated. I look forward to a response. Thanks emoticon emoticon

Thank you so much! I will try those things you suggest to learn about his Spark.
I have been seeing a psychologist and I was on Effexor for 4 years. It seems my depression is totally linked to my stress.. So I decided, along with my dr, that I have to learn how to deal with this chaos. So here I am..
I will try this links..
Thanks for the share..
