Hello everyone,

I am a northerner and live quite close to a big city. I am a country lover at heart. I have lived in 5 states and I lived in the country in most of them until I returned home to be near my family.

I look forward to sitting on the porch, sipping iced tea and watching the world go by.

emoticon everyone! My name is Judy. I'm new to the team but not new to Spark. Grew up in SE corner of Wisconsin in a small little city no one ever knows the name of. I left in January 1991 and have lived in CA since. Don't currently live in the country but the suburbs. At least its not the big city! While I've never actually lived on a farm or out in the boonies, I've always been drawn to country life. Yes, I realize it is not necessarily an easy life, lots of hard honest work goes on, but it still somehow seems much more relaxed than the non country life. Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

My DH and I live on 50 acres and are in the woods. Our driveway is an 8th mile long can not be seen from main road. We love living out here secluded. Often I see deer playing and eating mostly on the south side of our house. This year I am planning for the first time to do a garden getting it ready now.

I am a work in progress.

I love living in the country. I don't think I could ever live in the city. It is quiet out here where I live and I like it like that.

New to the group & re-starting my new journey of weight loss. I am a country girl who has transported to the city for works sake, but I like to get out in the sticks every chance I get. I was born & raised on an animal farm, so living in the city isn't really my cup of tea, but it gets the bills paid & makes you enjoy your trips home that much more.

emoticon to the team. Sorry I am a bit late; I have been MIA for a few weeks due to my job getting really busy this time of year. I am a bookkeeper and 30th June is the end of the Fiscal year in Australia. Clients want their books up to date and closed off for the accountants. It's good to be busy though. Wishing you all the best

Howdy. I am new to this group, but have been using Spark People for a few years. Also I go way back with SilverWitch. I live on the outskirts of the country side, so I am always driving out there and taking pictures of the surroundings.

emoticon Bri to the Country Living team. I live in Australia and it is strange to when you say you live on the prairie. The only time I have heard this word is in cowboy movies or songs. We also have drought but not so much in the way of windy days, but many farms grow trees for wind blocks. Sounds like you have few of natures wild critters to worry about, good luck with them. Great to have you with us, enjoy your day.

It's exciting being on this team! I'm Bri (long i ) from southern Colorado, out on the plains. We have 36 acres of prairie. It's so difficult to grow things here between the drought and the wind. I determined, however. Hubby and I are figuring out ways such as wind blocks. I also plan to do some vertical gardening in the area behind the house we have fenced off.

We have chickens, mostly for eggs; ducks because I enjoy them; geese to keep the rattlers out of my area; and a couple of goats. The goats might go. We lost nanny to a pack of hungry coyotes this winter so the debate is keeping the wether and buck and getting another doe, or just getting rid of them for the foreseeable future.

Anyway, I'm 55 and came to spark to try to get healthier. I have fibromyalgia. They had me on so many pills and the side effects were as bad as the symptoms. I wanted to try to see what I could do for myself. It's working! I still need relief from pain sometimes, but I now sleep better and have energy most days. Ideally I would like to lose 30 more lbs.

Nice to meet all of you. From reading your posts I think I'm going to be here for a long time!

Good morning team. I am new to the team but not to SP. I live in a country town that is literally the Gateway to the Ozark Mountains. What I grow I can, freeze or dry. What is left over I share with the neighbors. My goal is to one day get ready to mow the yard only to find there is no yard just lush veggies and flowers growing with the herbs.

Welcome FarmingWitch! Love your avatar too... *S*

I too live in Michigan; on 10 acres in the southwestern portion of the state, between Kalamzoo and Grand Rapids. Getting the land ready for growing stuff is time consuming. *S* I have clay soil so coordinating a sweet cover crop for the next 2-3 years to help improve my back four acres.

I'm growing hazel nuts, but other things as well; walnuts, pecans, heartnuts, peaches, apples, raspberries, blackberries, choke cherries. I'm owned by 2 dogs, 2 birds and 2 cats.

Hey everyone :) new to group, figured I would jump in and introduce myself. Me, the hubz, 3 dogs, 2 cats, 13 chickens all live on 40 gorgeous Michigan acreage. Have to admit I was a Southern City gal until I met my husband. We moved up here, onto family land, and have slowly been working our way to self sufficiency.
For the first time in my life, I have yardage, needless to say garden is going in. We are hopping to get the goat pen finished this spring/summer. add to that various other land tending projects and we have been keeping ourselves pretty busy. Looking forward to getting to know everyone in the group :))))))

Hi, Everyone
Thank you for the invite to this group! I love the country. Grew up on a little horse farm, with horses, chickens, ducks, geese, goats, pigs, cats and dogs. Now I live in another state from where I grew up and we rent an apartment with a very nice and understanding landlord. We've been happily married going on 20 years, have four kids and have a nice big yard. We have 6 chickens for eggs and a pet bunny. We also have 3 house cats and 1 indoor dog.

We are hopefully getting two dairy goats at the end of May. They were just born this past Friday and Saturday, awwww. We go to meet them on Saturday to see if we want them. We are hoping to use the goats milk for drinking, cheese, yogurt, butter and also soap. It will take a while before we'll be getting milk from them though, of course. But very much looking forward to it.

We have a big garden every year, Lord willing. We also have blueberry bushes, raspberry bushes and strawberry plants. Not getting a bunch from the raspberries yet, blueberries aren't producing yet either but the strawberries we were able to get 5 quarts last year. We ordered more of all so we hope to be able to have our own fruit instead of paying exuberant prices at the stores and farmers markets. I love canning and freezing our homegrown food too.

Been on Spark People for 1 month and a day now. Love this program. I count calories, exercise 5 days a week using a walk off the pounds with Leslie Sansone (now I'm up to the 2 mile a day one, just started that yesterday) and watch my sodium intake. I try keeping it below 900 but average in the 400's-500's a day.

Looking forward to being an encouragement to others and also learn a bunch from everyone else!
Have a wonderful day everyone!

Welcome JO!!!!

OMG! I mow around my trees and shrubs, the house, and ditch area, which barely adds up to 1/4 acre, with my push mower. Then ride mow the remaining house lawn 3/4 acre, and about an acre in the back where I have more nut trees. The fact you push mow 3 acres astounds me, my hat is off to your tenacity and stamina, dear lady. emoticon

Congrats on your successful weight loss and continued lifestyle. You are an inspiration.

Hi,

I'm Jo, and I live in the country. And I'm so happy I found this team!

I live in Atlantic Canada. I grew up in a small town, and interacted a lot with a small city, but as I grew up, I ended up more and more in the city life, thinking it was all exciting and stuff.

Fast-forward to 10 years ago, and my (late) husband & I decided to move back to the country. We found this cute little country house on a dirt road with just a little bit of acreage, and although it took me 2 years to get used to it, I really like living in the country. Many of my city-slicker friends think I'm crazy for living out there by myself, and my parents thought I had a screw loose when they found out we would be living in the sticks.

I've been with Spark for nearly 4 years, and I've been on a healthy lifestyle journey for nearly 11 years now. Overall, I have lost 135lbs, with still another 35 to go, and about half that weight was lost after we moved to the country.

Who needs a gym when you have 3 acres of lawn to mow by hand or a 100' driveway to snow-blow, or 6 cords of wood to bring inside before the snow flies? :-D

Spark on!

Jo

Friends are like bras -- close to the heart and there for support.

Thanks for the hello. Yes, some rain would be great. We have town and tank water and the tank is empty so 'paying' for any watering that is being done at the moment. Hope to keep up finding time for 'spark' and joining in. :)

emoticon Pam to the Country Living team. Also welcome back to SP, it is the interaction with others that is so great about this site. I also moved to the country for the peace and quiet of it all. Again thank you for joining our team and feel free to just join in any of the threads in the forums when you are ready

Hello everyone…

I am an old-timer to Spark People, just returning from a necessary sabbatical. I missed the interaction with others as I work from home. I live on 10 acres that I hope to convert into a small-revenue-making farm; hazel nuts and sweet clover are my chosen crops. I also grow burnt nuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts and heart nuts.

Raised a city-girl, I have always wanted to live on a farm. When 12 years old, my mother asked what I wanted to do when grown, I told her, “Raise corn and grow cows.” Yea, got that kinda backwards... I know that now. *LOL* After living 7 years in Nebraska, “growing cows” was definitely out of the question. Have you seen the size of those breeding bulls! YIKES! Then I discovered EVERYONE was “raising corn”. *S* So, hubby and I started an apple orchard in western Nebraska to the chagrin of neighbors and long-standing farmers-ranchers. It was a success, but a layoff would see us moving to Michigan; hubby accepted a job as an Associate Wine Maker/Farm Manager. My husband was born and raised on a western Nebraska farm-ranch, so I’ve married my mentor.

However, it’s the quiet, serene atmosphere, and privacy I value the most. My little dogs love running and romping and scouting the acreage without being tethered. Our kids (5 in all, with 6 grandkids) enjoy visiting because of its peacefulness; a reprieve from city-life.

I am retired from corporate America and don’t miss the hour long commute (one-way), and at times, in hazardous weather conditions. No more deadlines, politicking, or one-sided diplomacy. Working the soil, nature has one rule – SHE/HE RULES! *LOL* It’s just so simple… *LOL*

The title, “Gentlewoman Farmer” feels nice.

emoticon Pat, my new year is going well thank you for asking, taking it slow. Losing unwanted weight is progress to me. Your BMI will come down. Going slow is good because you are more likely to keep it off that way. I also like the non-scale victories best, loose clothing always makes me feel great.

Glad to have you with us, just join into any of threads that take your fancy and if you have any questions just ask, we are here to help you.

Enjoy your day

Happy New Year. My name is Pat. I live in Alabama. I hope everyone is doing well. How is your new year going team?

I was on a long plateau last year. I began losing in November and December. I was down to the lowest weight I have been in decades. My PCM pointed out I am still in the BMI obese range. I can read the chart thank you very much. I knew I had a ways to go, but I felt I was making progress.

This month so far not so good. I have gained five pounds. I refuse to change my ticker. I am going to lose the five pounds and keep losing. I am taking things slower and thinking in terms of a healthy body and lifestyle moving slowly toward my goal weight and then a maintenance plan. Non-scale victories are important for self esteem and improving my health is my goal.

Hello everyone. My name is Christina and I'm new to SparkPeople. I just found this team and have enjoyed reading the threads and postings, so decided to join you!

I live in the country in central Indiana. I have two horses, a dog, and two cats (my "kids"), and I love being back in the country. I lived in cities for many years for my career, but I grew up in northern Indiana on a farm and then in a very small farming town. Two years ago I moved back to the country when I left my "day job" career that was tying me to the city. Now I teach part time and have my own freelance writing business. It's been a long time since I've felt this at home and at ease in my life, and I'm loving it!

I've struggled for more than 10 years to lose weight that I put on in my 40s (I just turned 50 in October). I tried several diet plans and programs, some of which worked but that I got tired of -- and of course then the weight came back. Now I am simply using the common sense that God gave me to eat healthy food in moderation and variety, and most importantly getting more exercise. So far I've lost 3 pounds, and my goal is to lose a total of 38 pounds. I think SP is going to play a big role in helping me reach this goal!

I look forward to being a part of the Country Living team and making new friends!

Hello. I just joined this team today. Just call me Barb. I have been a country girl all my life. I sang in my Dad's country band as a teenager and even learned how to call a square dance, Have not done that for quite awhile. I do sing country gospel now.

I have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. We only have 5 acres and do not farm, but usually have a garden and I am thinking about turning our front yard into an herb garden. The only animals we have are dogs. I did grow up with the usual farm animals of chickens and pigs. We had goats and sheep also. I buy goat milk from an Amish farmer because it is better for the respiratory problems I have than cow's milk.

Enough about me, except you may want to check out my blog "Homing Chickens." Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

Hi everyone -- I just discovered and joined this team, although I've been with SP for about a month and a half now. I live in the very rural and beautiful Michigan Upper Peninsula, in the middle of a mostly-cedar-swamp 13 acres, near Lake Michigan. We have a pretty good-size garden (about 75 x 25 feet), 2 big collies and 2 cats. The growing season is pretty short here but I compensate for that by starting my plants under lights in the spring and then moving them out to a greenhouse before they go into the garden. I'm working on losing nearly 100 pounds by next Labor Day, along with improving my fitness, and doing the Mackinac Bridge walk at that time to celebrate my 65th birthday! This was looking like a pretty daunting task until I decided to give Spark People a try -- now I'm feeling pretty confident that I can do it, with all the support here and the tools for keeping me going in the right direction. I looking forward to getting to know the team members and participating here -- thanks, Gopintos, for adding me as a friend!

Sandy (Michigan Upper Peninsula) -- Say "Ya!" to da U.P, eh?

Hi there, I'm Artemis, and I love gardeniing, attempting to grow my own food (I got great and abundant zucchini blossoms... but NO zucchinis!), and I love the countryside and outdoors, and critters. I'd love to raise chickens and small livestock, but until then (and I get more veggies growing here), I go from farm market to farm market, and can and freeze items myself (so I know what's in 'em...).

I'm down over 30 pounds from my worst, it is just 20 more to go.

Yep, there I am, swimming through the desert sands. Might just be a mirage, after all. But this is life, and we learn best about it if we explore it, and take our chances. A life unexplored, after all, is one of the saddest things out there.

Hi JLo! How'd you get that name? I've been on a couple of months and have lost 10 lbs. Now THAT is motivating! We are about the same age and have the same amt to lose, so hang in there! We can do it! The key for me is really planning in advance what I am going to eat that day, and tracking everything. Hard when you're busy, but WORTH IT to take that time for yourself.

Hi they call me JLo. I started over a month ago but I really haven't started looking at SP till today. I also am a full time nurse with a daughter. I'm 52 years young and live in SO. Cal. Would love to live in Ohio where I have family but have obligations here that moving is not an option at this time, soon I hope. Being a nurse we always think of others before ourselves. I think it's time I became a little selfish and think about me. I enjoy my garden, garage sales, tea parties and crafts( Looking forward to the Country living flee market in Columbus Ohio in Sept.) I need to lose 50 but my short term goal is 10 pounds for now. I have started tracking on a small pad and have been exercising at least 15 min a day for a week now. I do understand about this menopause thing because I'm living it. I think this is going to make us that much stronger to overcome losing our extra pounds. Wow , just writing this down is giving me some motivation. Thank you , I guess I needed someone to relate to. I enjoy getting a little motivated by success stories but there are not many with women over 50 years young. Hopefully this the the beginning I need to continue on the journey to healthy living and weight loss.

Hi Lynn,

Welcome to SparkPeople, you've come to the right place to start your journey. We are all here if you need anything. I would suggest just jumping right in and reading articles to get yourself started. They offer everything from nutrition to exercise and tons of motivation. It helped me alot when I started using the food tracker so I could actually see what I was eating and where I could improve it.

The site sometimes takes a little getting used to but once you start playing around with it and visiting different forums, it becomes easier.

Congratulations on choosing to be a better you.

Hi, I'm Lynn and I live in Eastern PA. I put on weight in the last few years. Some of the medicine I'm on makes me gain weight. The doctor told me today that my thyroid is to low. She said that might also be why I gained weight. I've been trying to start this diet, but it's hard because I don't like a lot of foods. Any encouragement would be appreciated.

Hi AILUROPHILIACX! welcome to the team and to country life!

My friend went through this same thing. She told me that it helped to keep busy. I know it can be a very big adjustment especially being used to all the hustle and bustle. Over time, you will start to notice and appreciate your surroundings and the quiet can be very comforting. If it gets too overwhelming not hearing all that noise, crank up the radio!

Take advantage of the outdoors and use it as a tool in your weight lose journey, this will also help you get used to things.

Plus, the country air is great for the soul. I hope this has helped a little and if not, I'm sorry.
Good luck with everything.

Also, is it possible to get a city fix every now and then so that you wont miss it too terribly?

Hello everyone!

While I am new to this team, I am also new to country life!

I recently moved from the city into the country with my boyfriend a few months ago, and I am having a hard time adjusting. I do like some aspects of country life, but I miss the city! How do I cope?

I have been on SP for 1 1/2 yrs, I do well for a while and than get off track and have to spend time refocusing, Since I have gotten older and menopause has started it is harder to lose the weight and my energy level drags at time.

My husband and I moved to the country in 2000 with 10 children. We had a new baby the following March. It is a small, 10 acre hobby farm. We have had dairy cattle, beef cattle, horses, ponies, goats, laying hens, meat chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits and pigs. We had a pear tree (which blew down) and we always have a large garden as well as our grapes and rhubarb.
Many of our children have married and we have four in the military and our daughter is married to a sailor. I love living in the country.

Hi All !!

My name is Michelle. I am a stay at home mom to three kids ages 11, 4 and almost 2.

I enjoy fishing, camping and hunting with my family. Although I enjoy tromping around in the woods, I would rather be on top of a lake somewhere fishing.

I also enjoy riding horses, have been doing so since I was just toddling around.

We reside in sunny Florida.
Can't wait to jump right in and start getting to know everyone!

Hi everyone! I grew up on a farm in Nebraska but have lived in Kansas ever since I got married almost 23 years ago. I have a 19-year-old son who's a college freshman and a 16-year-old daughter. We live on 8 acres and have a quarter horse, chickens, dog, cats and a huge garden. We love the country life!

I've been a Sparker for a little more than 2 years and have lost 20+ pounds. I'm fighting to lose the last 10 pounds which do NOT want to go!

Looking forward to getting to know other team members!

Thanks for the welcome

Hi I am Jean Anne from Walnut Grove, MO. I moved here 3 years ago from Las Vegas, however I was born and raised in Sigourney, IA.

I have always had a issues with my weight but was doing ok until about 10 years ago when live became really stressful.

I found Sparkpeople about 2 years ago but really started using the program last summer.

I have lost 25 lbs but would like to lose another 25 to 35 lbs.

I love being back in the country and looking forward to getting to know everyone on this team.

emoticon I'm a 55 year old woman that's been struggling with her weight most of my adult life. For over 18 years I managed to keep a 105 lb weight loss but when menopause hit 7 years ago, everything that had worked in the past no longer worked.
I'm in full menopause now so I feel it's time to get my weight back on track as it should be. I'm not nearly as active as I used to be so I know trying to get my weight back down to what it was in 2005 is going to be an act of sheer stupidity, so I'm going to wise up and work to get my weight back down to a number I feel I'll be able to manage, which is 185 lbs.
I'm tall so even though that number puts me in the overweight range, I won't be in the obese range, and I can live with that. And given I'll be down a total of 62 lbs from last years highest weight of 247 lbs, once I reach 185 lbs, I know I'll be much healthier and will have a lot more energy than I do now.

Hi, I'm Jenn. I live in West Texas and have lived in either West Texas or Oklahoma my whole life. We're on the very edge of town but it's rural enough that you can't tell you're that close. I've been a SparkPeople member for a couple of years, but have only really been active in the last month.

Greetings! I was urban born/suburban raised, used to traffic and concrete and smog.

Almost 12 years ago, God moved me from the Chicago area to rural Manitoba. We live on 20 acres of beautiful prairie land and I could never imagine wanting to go back to a different kind of life.

This is God's way of showing me heaven on earth....

Hi, I'm new, from NW PA. I grew up in town and married a farm boy. I'd always wanted to live in the country, have since 1972, and still love it. We farmed for many years, but have cut back to a large garden and our only livestock is 10 dogs and 2 cats now. I like to sew, bake and decorate cakes, play with my granddaughters, and take long walks with my dogs. A good book on a rainy day is another favorite thing.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Sandra and I live in country Victoria in Australia. We have a few hectares but as yet have not done much with it. I joined sparkpeople in January and have just found this team. Looking forward to talking with you all.
