I have found it best to stick with as many foods as possible that don't come with a UPC label - there is so much to eat that does not come in a box, bag or can. I admit though that life wouldn't be the same without Bob's Gluten Free Oatmeal

Sometimes they have more sugar in them than the ones with flour and that adds up to more weight gain.

My daughter and I compared the GF and Butter yellow cake mixes from Betty Crocker. Both her family and my guys at home prefer the GF stuff.
The GF has 10 fewer calories per 43 grams of mix, no fat vs. 1.5 in the regular, 2 g. more carbs but 2 g. less sugar. Also, the GF mix had no artificial coloring and many fewer ingredients.
So, though I don't bake them that often, I can say that people are more likely to eat one piece of cake rather than two, and be happy.
Also, I find brown rice noodles far superior to white flour noodles, and more so than white rice. I think one must read labels. The Kinnikinnick English muffins have 360 calories in one. But they are really thick, and I get four slices from one. They're great for open face sandwiches.
I use a lot of quinoa with stir fry meals, and it pares well with fish.

I've tried really hard to find foods that are naturally gluten free rather than gluten free substitutes. In case that makes no sense outside of my brain... I don't use, say, gluten free noodles for my beef stroganoff, I serve it over rice. A lot of my favorite veggie pasta sauces go great over beef or chicken. That sort of thing.

(That said, I'm pretty firmly addicted to Nut Thins & Mary's Gone Crackers...)

I definitely like the convenience factor of some things, but the cost definitely puts it over the edge for me on a lot of them.

I am very newly on this GF thing and I ate more candy on Halloween this year than I have previous years. I kept looking up if certain candies were GF or not and then I celebrated a bit too much!

Just because it's GF doesn't mean I should eat it! (I like it! emoticon )

Yes, many of the foods are high in sugar and fat. But, for me, as they are so expensive, I tend to limit my consumption. Things like doughnuts are a very occasional treat for me. I try to keep to the less sweet stuff. Most of the things I buy have much fewer artificial ingredients.

I have been living with celiac disease for 30 years and have found my own little niche before all these gf substitute foods came out. Have you looked at the nutrition label for some of these foods like gf donuts, cake mixes, cookie mixes, frozen pizza's? They are worse than any regular foods that are full of gluten. They are high in fat especially saturated fat, high in sugar, high in carbs, etc. I would stay away from these foods.
