Hi Zoo - missed this thread. I remember when you were going through some really rough patches. It seemed you could eat NOTHING! You've shown a lot of courage (as I "try" low-carb I want to tear my hair out sometimes and gf diet seems like CAKE and toast by comparison emoticon ). I admire your persistence.

PS To my old SP friends - It's been a very rough journey... My beloved, healthy, athletic, tall, dark and handsome husband died in August 2012 from a very aggressive cancer... In the many months caring for him I was stressed and didn't "care" anymore, and put back on 30 pounds I had just finished losing... And then I gained even more...

A short, but very sweet, video tribute to this beautiful man:

I think it's hard to give up those old favorites. I just kept telling myself that my dogs love those semi moist foods which are loaded with fat, sugar, preservatives, and food colorings and I don't let them eat those foods. In fact, I would never feed my dogs a diet based in wheat and grain. I am one of those people who buys expensive foods and feeds raw foods. I needed to but as much care into my diet as I was putting into theirs.

You'll find new favorites too! Chebe makes the best pizza crusts and bread sticks. BLT's are so much better on romain leaves. Fajitas & burritos are great naked. Rice pasta makes a great lasagna, as does thinly sliced eggplant. Teff is in a world of it's own, but much more filling then breat. Quinoa is some awesome stuff too, makes a very filling pasta or can be eaten like rice.

HTG_ZOO--thank you for the informative and interesting post!
I am trying what you did now. I don't have all the illness you had, and I don't want them!

and finally ready to talk about it!

About 18 months ago I was dieing! I feel like I was much closer then the doctors let on. I think my physcian sensed it too.

For years, I was the sickly one, migraines, aches & pains, just unable to get out of bed, difficulty swallowing, GERD, reflux, palpitations, irregular... the works.

Then about 18 months ago, the pain from my spleen region became unbearable. Then food just seemed to go right through me. I was also vomiting nearly every hour. I was miserable beyond belief and no one seemed to be interesting in helping me except my physcian. She sent me for a colonscopy. Months earlier she had refered me to an ENT for chronic ear infections and sore throats. He was set to allergy test me, but had to keep rescheduling me because I couldn't get off phenergan for the 10 days required for the test to work.

The colonoscopy revealed NOTHING... the gastrologist told me to follow up with him in 6 weeks. Later, I called him back to explain to him that I was dieing, needed something helpful now, not in 6 weeks. I had lost 15 pounds before the colonoscopy and still couldn't keep anything down (by this time there was nothing to pass through me anymore).

The colonoscopy left me so dehydrated that my kidney developed a 1 mm stone and shut down. The ER drugged me up and sent me home, becuase you can function with 1 kidney shut down. Unfortunately, I didn't know, and they didn't seem to care, that I only have 1 large kidney and both sides were significantly impaired.

My physcian took a urine sample from me the next day and sent me straight to a urologist, against the ER's reccomendation. A 1 mm stone shouldn't put anyone in kidney failure. The urologist prescribed me Gatorade, some muscle relaxor for the IBS & upset stomach and told me to get the allergy testing ASAP.

Allergy testing revealed lots of allergies that I had no idea about, one of them was yeast. Having learned from some info Dotslady gave me, that the meds I was taking could have skewed the allergy test results and that none of the tests I had been given really tested for Celiac, and since I already had to go on a low carb, no processed grains, yeast free diet, I decided to go gluten free at the same time. The ENT was ok with this, as he didn't see the harm.

It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I did months of low low low carb to defeat the Candida, avoided all the foods I was allergic or sensitive too and gluten. I redefined my mental image of food, to elminate processed 'junk' and embrace whole, 'real' foods.

I never wanted to be one of those people who tells everyone 'you just have to try this, you'll feel so much better' but, eventually, you will! I was feeling pretty rotten for about 2 months on the new diet, but I was also recovering from kidney failure, and the poisoning that gives you, and 'resetting' my guts all while trying to figure out what to eat!

Now, I still have trouble with the kidney, and sometimes eat too many carbs, but I feel worlds better and even my fiancee has cut his bread habit from 1/2 a loaf a day to 2-4 slices.
