I am listening to a book on tape and the one thing they have to say is size doesn't matter fit does. I'm thinking they are right. How many of us walk around with a shirt that says "this is a size 2 on the front". I will tell you that when we ask others about what something looks like we ask does this make me look fat, not does this make me look like I am wearing a size 2.

I found the opposite a Kohl's. I have no butt and a wide waist. I was trying on jeans not shirts or dresses. The junior sizes were loose around my butt and tight below my waist. Even sizes like at JC Penneys fit better. A little tight in the waist but the rise isn't so low that my butt hangs out.

The best fitting jeans in my case tend to be the ones marked both numbers like my 5/6 that I love. The gap jeans also fit well and they're even. I think it's the manufacturer, not if it's an even or odd size.

Maintenance range. 127 to 132.

"Keep in mind that odd numbers are junior sizes. They are made to fit girls with no hips and very little bust. Even numbered clothes generally fit grown women better."

I never knew this! Great info!!! (Especially shopping at a place like Winners!)

The size does matter depending on retailer. It is so frustrating, because you can't just go in and grab the size you think you wear and walk out. It's not just each retailer, but whether it's jeans or slacks or even skirts, the sizes are never consistent. And has anyone tried to make their clothes? I measured myself and made a pair of pants according to the pattern size that matched the measurements and I couldn't get them up over my thighs! What a waste of fabric and time!

It's not what you have, it's what you do with it that counts.

It's also cut. I went to Kohl's and the jeans didn't fit right. In order not to have a muffin top, they were terribly loose in the bum. At my age, I don't want to show off my panties. Yuk!

I'm better off with the even sizes or the ones marked both sizes like 5/6 or by waist size. I have to go bigger with Target so the jeans aren't tight but they don't have a gap in the back. I would never trust getting clothes by mail order. With Gap and few other stores, I have to go smaller, tight but no muffin top and no crack in the back.

I started this thread. I see the tens in my closet as fat pants. I was wondering if it was a height thing. I think it's more a clothing manufacturers playing games thing now.

Maintenance range. 127 to 132.

When I was at about 160 and wore a 12, a friend of mine was about 185 and in a 12. She looked totaally thinner than me because she was tall and lean (at 5'7") and I felt short and dumpy (at 5'2"). Also, I have a sister that is 5'10 about 150 pounds and when I was 135 and in an 8, so was she and she looked like a skinny super model compared to me. Just one of the issues of being short.

Listening or reading what you are all saying about a 14 makes me think man I am HUGE!!!

It doesnt matter the size I guess cause I have 2 pr of 14's and one pair is smaller than the other.

When I was 17 I weighed 135 and wore a size 9 but when I was 25 I got back down to that weight and it was a SIZE 12.

Who knows!

:) I actually didn't go back for a while on purpose and now I am just not in the habit of going to that store. I guess good customer service can make all the difference. Maybe I'll peak inside tomorrow and see what I see. MY PANTS ALMOST FELL DOWN TODAY! I have one pair that fit me, but I REALLY don't want to buy "winter" type pants just yet so I am resisting. I had both arms full walking into the school building and I nearly had to drop everything to catch my pants. OOHHH there are worse problems to have, but I do think I am going to have to find a 2nd pair of pants to get me through for a bit anyway. :) I will be thinking of all of you as I am jumping from size 2 to 8 at the many different stores!

I don't blame you for leaving! I would have as well. I don't know why some salespeople think that if we need shorter we need bigger. Sorry about your crappy shopping experience. Clearly she knew not what she was doing and you probably did good not going back!

APRIL - Years ago I was shopping at a store and had a size 8 in "regulars" I was trying on. They were a little long so the lady said she could grab me a 10 "short". I told her that my butt didn't change size in the past 5 minutes why would it need a different size? I just needed them SHORTER. She was completely exasperated with me. I really do NOT care about the tag because nobody can see it but me, but that day (SEVERAL years ago) I got mad, left and actually haven't bought a pair of pants there since. Didn't leave me with warm cozy feelings. :)

Working in retail, I know all the evils of sizes!!! I'm 4'11" and whats sad for me is petites fit smaller than regular misses sizes do. I don't know if anyone else noticed that or not. I buy my dress pants in the petite section because if I bought regular misses I'd be hemming them more than wearing them! I just don't own jeans at all right now. I want to wait until my thighs don't look so fat! LOL

It definitely matters WHERE you buy your clothes too.
The more expensive the store the smaller the size!
I wish everyone would quit talking in sizes too, because I can wear everything from a 8 to a 14 depending on style, brand and store.

when did we start seeing size 0, 2 or even 4? In the 1920 to the 70's I don't recall catalogues having these sizes to order from. The normal size was from 6 to 16. Where have we gone wrong? Why do we judge ourselves by numbers when they are so unreliable? I know we have to start at some size but, maybe we should be telling our concerns to the manufacturers. Just my thoughts emoticon

I agree that the higher end stores have smaller sizes. My clothes generally come from Wal Mart and Zellers. Once in a while, I need to go out and get something extra nice for an event, so I go to some store that is more expensive and end up buying something that is two sizes smaller than what I'm used to.

I'm now wearing a small or size 8 dress from my closet. I apparent had got rid of all but one pair of my small trousers, but I have miniskirts and dresses that I wore the last time I was near my goal weight.

They're all fitting now. I think us small women show a weight loss faster. My face, arms, legs started to look thin soon after I took off the first seven, eight pounds.

I feel so tiny now wearing clothes that I haven't worn since the 90s. My size 10 jeans are too big, but I really don't like the cut of most of the newer jeans. I'm over 40. I don't want people seeing my crack.

I have to say that I look at these weight loss ads and the ad claims that the person is 135 pounds and wears a size 2. I have come to the conclusion that they lie. Or bearts me where they shop. I have put my foot down and have to say I would rather wear something in a bigger size than something that muffin tops me. This is easier for me to say now that I am under a size 10 and 20 years older. I think the older thing is the thing that makes me care less. I am almost 50 and am looking forwear to running a 3K and can tuck my shirts in look pretty good in my workout clothes, and am healthy. I feel this is much more important than a size 2 or a size 4. I picked up 2 pairs of pants in China that are both size 28. 1 is really cute and the otherr we will just call goals clothes. At the silk market you used a tape measure to see what size you are and then held the jeans up to make sure they went from your side seam to side seam. If you have some stuff in the trunk don't use this method. My daughter also has a pair of goal pants. The silk market was like a fea market of new item in a 6 floor building. You bardered on everything. Too much fun. By day 3 we had a great time and the vendors were great.

Have any of you watched TLC's What Not to Wear? They are always reminding the women to try not to pay attention to the size and just focus on what looks good and fits well. If you're wearing something really flattering and tailored well, that's all that matters.

It is hard to judge sizes well when you yourself are so short. I recently had to buy some shirts for a 3 friends in a wedding party. They are all taller than me (5'7 or so) and wear a size 22. I needed help finding the correct size shirts for them because everything looked way too big to me...

The size is all relative to body shape and not necessarily weight...it is also relative to the cut of the clothing...I'm in a size 8/10 and weigh 128...I don't think a 6 would fit past my thighs at this point b/c I carry my weight in lower belly, hips and thighs.
I say size 8/10 b/c some pants an 8 is a great fit others is a 10 due to the cut or style of the pants. Shirts vary the same, especially the cut.

I think we do have to remember the difference of junior (odd) and misses (even) clothing. I have found that there is a difference in suits as opposed to casual clothing (could be the manufacturer difference). I have also found a difference in petite clothing to regular misses. With all that said, I usually wear a size 5 juniors (thighs too big for a 3), 4 petite (casual clothing) and 2 (business suits). It took some time for me to figure this out. lol!

Hi all
So this is what I have learned by being in the apparel business. The more expensive the store the smaller the size you will fit into. If it is a euro size a L euro might fit a small american. I am 120 -125 and fit into a 5-9 depending on the style. I got a pair of jeans in China size 28 and because it is a skinny jean they are to small so I will call them my goal jeans. I got a different pair of 28 same place I forgot the brand and they fit great. I hate muffin tops and I am not talking the kind you eat. I always want to be a size 2 but after reading the article in promotions mag and reading how different co. use this whole body image size thing to sell jeans I now put on the jeans and if there are no muffin top I buy them. I will have to tell you that I felt great zipping up those size 5 or 7's

I can see my ribs under my breasts, too. However, I can get into a size 8 dress. It's tight at the shoulders and breasts. They look better with a minimizing bra. Like you, I'm much smaller on the bottom than top. I currently wear a 38C bra. I have 29 inch waist and 35 inch hips. So, Rachelle, we're about the same size.

sizes drive me nuts. i'm 5'2", 127-ish pounds, 28" waist 35" hips. my ribs are wide so i usually can't zip formal dresses up past my middle (my prom dress was size 10 in order to fit...i can get a size 6 up my waist only)--but size 6 sundresses have been pretty loose on me. i wear anywhere from size 3 to size 6 jeans (again, depending on the style--and preferrably in Short junior styles or petite). i used to wear 9's/8's at my highest weight 138 and 30" waist, and for most of my life i wore 7's. *sighs.* sizes are a bit wonky, aren't they?

forget being tiny; i want to be strong, healthy and dynamic.

Ten was my fat size when I was a teen in the late seventies, early eighties so sizes haven't changed that much. I think in my grandmother's day a size 8 was 27 inch waist and 35.5 hips, about the same as today's 4.

I think I could probably wear a 2 or 4 at the gap, now. I have shirts that are smalls to larges in my closet that fit. I have broad shoulders so sometimes I need a large just for that part: it depends on the cut. Not, like you can't see my broad shoulders in my photograph.

I think that shorter women need to wear smaller sizes than tall women to look just as good. It's not strange to hear that a short woman is wearing a 0 or 2, but most tall women would look gaunt in those sizes.

Even if the manufacturers are playing games wearing a size 2 will feel good.

Lol - Jakelover - glad to hear there are other people that have "heel pants" and otherwise. When I go pant shopping which is RARE I too jump up and down when they fit, but then I have to decide if I want them to be for heals or not. I RARELY wear heals so I think I am down to 1 pair I of denim I can wear with heels. My WONDERFUL problem is those are a size 8 in that same style I am now wearing a size 2!!!! :) As far as manufactures go I can't wear a size 2 in a few of the styles right there at Gap that those size 2 fit me perfectly! Shopping is just hard.

Yes often sizes do fluctuate slightly from manufactuer to manufactuer.
Regarding the 'average' size you have to remeber that the majority of adult americans are overweight so that average takes in these the very obese and the very skinny. Just because its the average american size doesn't mean its a thin one!

I find it difficult to find jeans that are not long in petites as well. In you just can't seem to have them tailored as nicely as other pants. When I find a pair I jump for joy because I can wear them with my flip flops.
Good thing I like my heels for those other pairs that I just must have because they make my butt look good.

It took me a while to figure it out, but my legs actually aren't short. Petites are too short on me - go figure! When I was pregnant with my son (who was huge!) we realized I have NO middle to speak of. My ribs and hips nearly touch! Not good for having babies, but does help with the length issue a bit. It is still a challenge, but I do stay away from petites after walking around with high-waters for a while!

Yes...petite jeans are just not petite ENOUGH!! I have bought a couple pair of 3 junior jeans and they fit, but they did not cover my butt crack!!! I figure, yes, my hips are larger than those of a "junior" girl and they probably make them fit low on purpose, just looking at how many girls wear them too low.

I'm going shopping tomorrow...my first jean hunting expedition w/out my 4 kids in tow...I'm ready!!!

I totally agree with TDMABRY's sentiments about the sizes being fake. My husband is baffled that our sized are not the same. For me size 10 is not a fat size. I'm at 160 and in a 14/16. The smallest clothing size I have ever warn was a 5 when I was 120-125 lbs in high school. I'm hoping to get into a size 6 when I hit my goal weight. But there are so many factors -- size is just not a great measurement.

As a side note, does everyone else have a problem with petite jeans that are still too long! I hate it.

Maybe it is an American thing. Here in Canada a "10" still seems to mean a "10". I'm 5ft, 128lbs and I usually fit a size 10. Six months ago when I was at 155lbs, a size 14 was a snug fit and I'm embarrassed to say that I even had a few size 16 pants.

I've never heard of this odd versus even for junior sizes concept.

I'm not quite 5'2", weigh 136 and am just barely starting to fit into a size 10. When I was 160, I wore a size 14/16.

When I got married 13 years ago, I weighed 108 and wore a size 3 :)

So, it will be interesting to see what size I wear when I'm at my goal weight of 120. I was hoping for a 6. But as you all have mentioned, it doesn't really matter what's on the tag.

I also think you need to consider body types. For instance I am thick waisted wiht a larger bust and no hips. I will never get into a size 2 or 4 top. and it depends not only on the brand, but the style of the pant for me. If it is some thing lower waisted I am going to be a smaller size than if it is a higher rise just because of my body type.
I think that you really need to go with your measurements to see progress in this area.

Of course sizes change from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from style to style. I'll go to a store that sells one brand and walk out with two different sizes.

Keep in mind that odd numbers are junior sizes. They are made to fit girls with no hips and very little bust. Even numbered clothes generally fit grown women better.

I am always envious of men who easily shop by waist and length!!! How simple that would be!!!

Of course, it's fake. However, I don't think American sizes have changed as much as people think. The size 10s that are huge on me are from the 90s or early 00s. When I was my skinniest as a teen, I wore a size 3 or 5. I had a 27 inch waist back then. I have a 29 inch waist now and wear a 6.

It's vanity sizing. I laugh at double zero. In my grandmother's day, the smallest size was an 8. My eye tells me a double zero is tiny. I have size 8 dresses in my closet from the early 90s that fit the same as a size 8 dress from the same store fits today.

I think sizes from the seventies were two sizes larger than the ones today. A 14 when I was growing up, would be a 10 today. A size 3 would be today's zero. That is only a guess. I threw all my old clothes out long ago.

I know it varies from manufacturer. I try everything on.

Welcome! It looks like we are in similar situations with size and goal.

The first thing I wish I could do is wash sizes out of people's minds. They are all FAKE!!! I worked at the m all through college and in that short amount of time watched sizes change SO MUCH! Clothing industry makes the pants bigger and the size smaller. I assure you that if we took a pair of size 6 jeans from 1985 and even attempted to put them on today we wouldn't be able to get one leg in them! Today I own my first pair of size 2. I was certainly excited, but NOT because of the 2. It is a fake! I was excited that I dropped 2 sizes since joining Spark. I know this because I ALWAYS have bought my jeans at Gap and I bought the same style in the 2 that are now way too huge for me in a 6.

We are told all the time to not worry about what the scale says - this is a challenge for me and I confess, but to declare ourselves a certain size in clothes will make us NUTS! My size 2 feel AWESOME on me and I look darned good in them, but down the way at the mall is another store. I can't get my butt in an 8 there!!!

Sidenote - typically if it is made in the USA you will find this more - bigger pants, smaller numbers.

Hope I am not being negative, I really don't want to be, but going down a size is AWESOME, but just be careful about comparing apples to apples. I could have gotten really depressed the other day when that 8 was too tight if I didn't know any better!

I found SP about two months after I started losing weight this time. I quit eating junk food and started exercising. I went back to being lazy about what I ate during the fall and early winter. I started watching my diet again February 5th.

Back to the story, at my highest weight, I'm 5'2", I weighed about 155 and wore a size 10. I'm now down to 136 wearing size 6 jeans which feel a little big, but I want to wait to buy clothes when I'm happy with my weight.

I suspect that I'll be wearing a size 1/2 when I get to goal and still be what many people call heavy for my size. I might lower my weight goal if I don't get a flat stomach by then, but not by much.

When Meme Roth said that the average woman weighed about 5 pounds more than me at my highest weight and wore a size 14, I was rather surprised. I mean the average woman is two inches taller than I. To me, a size 10 is huge. When I'm looking a jeans at the store, a size 3 to 5 looks about normal. Nine or bigger looks huge and 2 or smaller looks tiny.

Is my strange definition of sizes have to do with being short? I look at a 14 (average size) and it looks enormous to me.

Anyway, it won't be long before I'm wearing those tiny size 2 jeans.
