I hang my laundry on clothes lines to dry. I use my old dishwater to water my flowers and herb garden. I drive a Hybrid car. My community has a recycle pick up.
I live in Southern California, so ther is no need to put the heat on in Winter. I just put an extra blanket on my bed and wear pullovers instead.
I have a composter and my garden is organic.
I have three happy chickens in a pen where they can run around. I feed them only organic vegetables. I don't know if Purina chicken feed is nonGMO or not.
Whenever I go to the beach I pick up trash.
I just found out about Monsanto and GMOs. I will never buy Round Up again!
I will buy nonGMO seeds and plants for my garden. I will try to buy nonGMO foods when ever possible.

Hi, I'm new to the team. I use cloth napkins and towels, and don't buy single-use disposable paper or plastic products. I try to use water consciously, and use biodegradable cleaning ingredients. As far as shopping, I re-use whenever possible, shop second-hand first, and wait at least a week before buying new to make sure that I need the thing. I avoid buying products that use a lot of packaging, and try to be aware of the practices of the brands and companies that I "contribute" to when I shop. I've recently been working on reducing food waste in our house, which has helped me realize that I usually buy too much food when I go grocery shopping. look forward to participating here emoticon

Here I garden for wildlife. I don't use pesticides in my yard. I am working on doing a lot more composting, I just need to find a place where the dogs won't be into it. I have a fairly small yard with lots and lots of stuff in it. I get birds, bees, so many butterflies, lizards and even snakes. I even have learned to co exist with the spiders.

Recycle everything (all paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and cans)
Use re-usable cleaning supplies like clothes and rags instead of disposable
Only use air conditioning on hot days and turn off air conditioning during the work day
Cook most meals from scratch
Keep all packaging materials to re-use for later packages that need to be mailed
Use cloth bags at every store - not just the grocery
Utilize the library instead of buying more books, DVDs and CDs
Eat more vegetarian and organic foods
Buy local produce whenever possible
Buy used whenever possible
Compost fruit and vegetable waste
Use reusable water bottle
Save scrap pieces of paper to make lists and notes
Don't wrap gifts unless wrapping is recycled or reusable
Turn off water when brushing teeth, etc.

So glad to hear that, Linda! It will make it a lot easier for you, I'm guessing.

Using less electricity: I am reducing the time my relatively small TV is on by listening to my little radio more. I like NPR talk radio on Michigan Radio from Ann Arbor.

Beautiful weather here today with sunshine and blue sky and snow-melting temps in the 40's.
Cold returning tomorrow afternoon.

I'm a teacher. One thing I've recently started using are refillable dry erase markers. I like them so far (1 month), no where near needing to refill them yet, but I love the idea. I hope they live up to my expectations. If they do it will save a lot of waste and money.
I also reuse and recycle quite a bit at home and work.
I just turned the heat on today for the first time this season. When I woke up it was 52 in the house. That was enough to make my hands icicles and push me over the edge. Even though its on, it is just enough to take the edge off.

Reduce, reuse, recycle in that order. Also buy smart (more on that below).

Reduce: buy things in less packaging, trying to reuse the packaging if possible, or recyclable. If something comes in excess packaging, I'll write the company with some ideas to reduce that.

Reuse: many things should not be reused, e.g., soft plastic water bottles, so I try not to buy products in those containers, preferring glass when I can find it. Plastic containers with snap-on lids, or jars with screw-on lids, make great storage for small parts like screws, nuts, washers, tacks, push-pins, and other things I use in my art and woodworking hobbies. After I've read my magazines, I'll remove the address label and leave them in waiting rooms.

Recycle: I am lucky in that my town will take almost anything. My trash bin is nearly empty each week, while my recycle bin (same size) is almost full. I compost all my vegetable leavings.

When working in my hobbies, I try to use only sustainable products. I also re-purpose old, worn-out tools if possible, e.g., a damaged bladed screwdriver makes a decent small space holder, shim, or chisel.

It's the same with food. Buy local during the season, and try to buy sustainable, naturally-raised products when not in season.

I drive less than I used to. I grew up in the 1970s and remember the gas savings efforts we did for the oil crisis; that works today, too. I bike to work when I can.

Going forward, I am designing my own retirement home. This home is to be off the grid as much as possible, taking advantage of solar and wind power, passive solar design, and so on. There are reusable permeable products on the market for driveways (to prevent runoff and not using oil-based materials), products made from recycled materials... the list goes on. The design gets updated periodically as new products come on-board.

Almost all of our food is organic. We use reusable water bottles with tap water. We use very few chemicals, no chemical cleaners of any kind. We recycle and compost. We are pescetarians but frequently eat vegan or vegetarian. I drive a hybrid. We rarely use the air although for a week or two in the summer we still do. There are still a lot of things we could do a lot better on. So that is a work in progress. emoticon

I live a few miles from a very small town in forested mountains. The teeny tiny local store is expensive, mostly for summer tourists. To buy affordable food or work a job outside home is 50 miles minimum round trip.

I grocery shop once every 2-3 weeks because not only does it save gas, etc., I just plain love where I live. Before moving here I found a job that allowed me to work from home. I dry clothes outside whenever I can, use cloth shopping bags, buy organic as much as I can afford, and keep a small organic veggie garden. Vinegar and/or baking soda work for most household cleaning. The shower's equipped with low-flow water-saving shower head. I use, save, and reuse whatever things I can. We use cloth napkins instead of paper.

We don't have a lawn - no chemicals, wasted water, or lawnmower! Over the years, I've found a few plants the deer don't eat, but for the most part, our landscape is natural. The deer were here first and we love seeing them. Besides, we like dandelions and Oregon grape and arrowleaf balsamroot, wild clematis and honeysuckle vines, wild roses and serviceberry bushes and so much more.

Our well-insulated self-built home has a lot of double-paned low-E windows facing southeast so we get passive solar heat during cooler seasons. We didn't bother with air conditioning; when it's hot we leave screened doors and windows open and live mostly downstairs where it's naturally cooler.

Of course, there's more that we could do and will do eventually, but as you wrote, every little thing helps.

I use baking soda and a "tinch" of dishwasher detergent in my dishwasher. That is about 1 tsp. or so. We have soft water so this works just fine. My dishes sparkle. There is a rinse agent in there too. I don't know if rinse agents are environmentally irresponsible or not.

I hauled recyclables on a 100-mile round trip whenever I went to that city, starting Earth Day 1990 until recycling became mandatory in my state in 1995. I had my station wagon stuffed to the gills with paper, plastic, cans, and glass. It was a sight! LOL. From the driver's seat to the back door, I'm not kidding, because I didn't go very often. Then I got about $1.39 or something like that for all my effort. I'm sure glad our state got on board as soon as they did because life is so much easier today!

no paper towels or paper napkins. Using up what we have in the house before going shopping. And I haven't bought a commercial cleaning product for over a year now-- I've been mixing my own with decent results. emoticon

Yes, here in Michigan there's a 10-cent deposit on all pop bottles and cans, but other bottles and cans need to be recycled. And the recycling rate is not very high in my county.

I send them with him to work, then he will not buy pop. We take them with us on weakened trips.
I even with out asking the coop is looking for brushes for bottles.
Some times just by example help others to be earth healthy. We are in portland most bottles have a 5 cent refund. It is just how to reuse the rest.

So, Linda, you purchase tea in ?plastic? bottles, and then wash them and reuse them for more tea that you make yourself? I drink green tea every morning, and once, a long time ago, I did buy some in plastic bottles, in fact I still have some left that I never drank. I just have my tea in a 20-oz mug for breakfast. I am curious. Do you take the tea in bottles somewhere?
