MEC is great and they have a low cost race series too :) They are hosting a 10K in Oakbay Sunday that I will be doing :) I am also doing the TC half marathon.
The Oak Bay half at the end of May is a gorgeous one and of course the October race with the 8K, half and full options is wonderful
Running Room has free group runs on Wednesday nights. Mec has a woman's only meet up run as well
There is also the Galloping Goose trail that is one of my favourites
I hear you on paying. The meeting people is a nice aspect, but I have found just by being out there you start seeing the same people and next thing you know you have a running buddy
The weather sure has been perfect to be out there running the past 2 weeks :)
Thanks so much for getting in touch :)
I live downtown and don't have a car so a little restricted in terms of groups to join. But I have gone for runs along Dallas Rd, the park and am planning to hit the Songhees (sp?) path soon.
I've seen the run clinics around but I have a slight mental block against paying for access to a running group, save athletic clubs (but there doesn't seem to be any close to where I live, according to Front Runners where I did enquire a few months ago.) I understand these clinics offer info and programmes but I've been running for many years and done a lot of races of all distances so I don't feel I need the info part as much - more the social.
However, I did find out that MEC hosts free runs once a week and on Saturdays and I'll be joining them next week actually. I found it strange that the guy at Front Runners didn't mention these when I enquired.
I'm entered for the TC 10k in April. Any particular races you would recommend coming up in the next couple of months?
Great to hear from you. It'll be nice to keep in touch. Maybe even run into one another during a race (pardon the obvious pun ;-)
Victoria has a very active running community. Not sure where in Victoria you are but the Running Room, Front Runners and Peninsula Runners all offer run clinics, as well as the red centres.
There are also a whole slew of spring races coming up that are wonderful to meet other runners, or just use as a motivation to get training again.
We have lots of beautiful run areas, from the waterfront areas, to the trails at Elk Lake.
I am out by the ferries :) feel free to message me if you would like to talk more

I moved to Victoria last year from sunny South Africa.
I used to be very active there and ran everything from 10km - marathons. Since moving here though I have found it difficult to sustain the running. I was spoilt with a wonderful running friend and club and suddenly having to hit the road on my own was tough.
I'd like to get back into it and lose the few kilos gained due to the inactivity.
Hope to make some friends, virtual or otherwise.
