I'm a clean eater for the majority of my food.
I don't buy pre-packaged food and make my meals from scratch.
I enjoy knowing what is in the food I eat.

Love the mags and books and most of my meals are from there as well as SP.

I am probably 80/20 clean eating, striving for more! I have been on the road for most of the days since Thanksgiving, traveling and visiting a new grandson and having trouble always finding something clean to eat. DD has stepkids with horrible eating habits, they are making progress but still have stuff in the house I should not eat, and don't until I get overwhelmed.
I can identify with with menopause and medications as well. And aging doesn't help.

Hi all, I think I introduced myself awhile ago but it seems like there are a lot of new members. Glad to see this team taking off, thanks Anne!! I have been with Sparkpeople off an on for YEARS!! This is my year to be done with the weight loss portion of my journey. I lost 40 lbs last year and need to lose about that this year to be able to be on maintenence. I am eating clean/low carb. Between medicine and menopause the low carb seems to be the answer for me. Eating clean tends to be naturally lower carb so it's an easy transition.

Hi everyone! I'm Rachel and I'm new to spark people! I already love this community! I feel like I know everything there is to clean eating, I've devoured every health/fitness/workout magazine available since I was 16...for me it's a matter of listening to my body, and not eating out of boredom, comfort, etc...even those clean calories add up! I'm looking to lose 10lbs and get a 6 pack by June...I'm getting there....and could use some extra support!

I've been off SP for a while now as well and it's time to get back on track! I've lost a significant amount of weight by eating clean. I used to weigh 203.5 lbs and when I started SP I was 187 lbs. I lost about 50 lbs here, but gained back about 20 lbs.

I'm a medical intern and the weight gain started halfway of my rotations...I just feel so lost sometimes and I started feeling sorry for myself instead of finding ways to empower myself. Thus the weight gain. No more weight gain, time to get back in shape again!

Hi Becky and emoticon

Avoiding the center of the supermarket is the way to go. About the only reason I shop that area is to buy a few canned goods and frozen veggies, but anything that comes in a package, gets left on the shelf!

Congratulations on your baby daughter. MY "baby" daughter is an Air Force Captain these days!!!

The eating Clean magazines and cookbooks have great recipes in them. Check one at your local library.
Also, on this site there are some suitable meals. What do you and your family like to eat?

Greetings! I am new to the group and it's hard to find time to cook because I just had a baby girl in Dec and with a 3 year old and a military man. I am hoping to get some likable quick recipes to help with this challenge.

Hello,

I am new to this team.
The last years I changed my eating habits by eating more "normal". For me this meant cooking instead of eating from the microwave and pre-packed foods and minimizing carbs.
The last weeks I started looking into the Paleo eating and eating more biological foods.
I think this team can give me guidance and tips.

Do not turn back when you are almost at your goal!

Hi everyone on the team. I'm new and recently started cooking almost everything from scratch to give my family the best I can with what we eat. It's expensive though and I need to find better ways to cut the budget down.

Anyway looking forward to reading everything I can on this topic.

Hi all! I'm Beth and I want to eat clean! ALWAYS!

I subscribe to Clean Eating mag, all the newsletters, etc. I've watched all of the horrifying films re: our foods and want my family to eat healthy, whole, clean foods. It's quite the struggle when the finances are so flippin' tight, but we do our best!

The one thing we DO do is our Shakeology. I MAKE room for that in the food budget!

But I do find myself struggling often with sticking to it. Would love all of the support and encouragement, tips & tricks this team has to offer!

Hi! I have read a few of Tosca Reno's Clean Eating books and magzaine articles. I just subscribed to Clean Eating Magazine. I really think that sticking to whole foods is sensible nutrition. I believe processed food with it's additives, preservatives, stabilizers, chemicals, added sugar and salt is doing us harm. I also think that buying local, organic food is good for people and the planet.

I lost 7.5 pounds in January exercising almost daily and eating clean. I'm hoping to move some more pounds this February! It's new for me to eat nuts and peanut butter and more eggs. I was a former fat free philosophy type. I still do choose fat free dairy products. I really feel the clean effects of just drinking water as my beverage....wow!

My pantry has been converted to whole grains and brown rice.
I'm cooking rolled oats, planning to switch to batches of steel cut oats.
I've loaded up on pyrex glass storage for cut up vegetables and leftovers.
I need to buy another travel cooler.
I'm buying and eating produce like mad.

Welcome to our new members.

Eating Clean is easy to do when you eat more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins, legumes, beans and dairy. Prepare those foods simply, make them organic and/or local where possible, and keep recipes simple.
Try to avoid, or at least, minimize anything artificial...sweeteners, colors, flavors etc.

Hello. I'm Kelly. I'm 45 and I have been eating gluten free for a couple weeks. I also avoid artificial sweeteners and would like to learn more about clean eating. I have done the gluten, and sugar free before and felt a billion times better. My doc believes that I have MS, so besides just feeling better, I am trying to reduce inflamation. No official diagnosis yet.

Hi ONUTHIN125 and welcome.

Folate is easy to get enough of if you add some beans to your diet.
Pinto, garbanzo, black, Navy and Kidney beans all have good folate values.
Greens are great too; Collard greens, turnip greens and other dark green vegetables such as kale and chard are high in folate too.

Hi All! A warm welcome to all our new and returning members!

I've been eating clean for several years now and have to say I haven't been sick since I started. I truly believe getting rid of all the additives and perfumes and colors added to food has helped me tremendously. I eat 3 fresh veggies and 2/3 fresh fruits a day.

Best of luck to all of us! Have a wonderful weekend! Lizzie

Hi team,

My name is Pam, I am 54 and weighed 115 most of my adult life. When I had food allergies, I was on a strict diet and got down to between 107-112. However, when I was able to eat more foods, I overindulged and got into a habit of over-eating and the weight creeped up. I have a busy schedule working and carting my DD around to afterschool activities and have been eating fast food some of the time, especially due to my DD's insistence. I think the fast food has gotten the best of her... she had a cold for a week and now it's turned into the flu. This will be a good time to break of her fast food addiction, especially since we frequented Wendys during the time of her cold... I will remind her of how sick she became when she wants to go again. Time is limited for me so I may get back to cooking in batches on the weekend to save time during the week. Anne, I used to be on this team quite a while ago, but it wasn't very active. I like the threads you have chosen to get the team active again, and think I am going to get some good ideas for clean meals. Thanks, for being a great team leader!:)

Hi SM-ARTGIRL and emoticon

I'm glad to be at the helm of this Team...we have great members who are coming back, and new members keeping the *spark* alive here.

I so hear you about the "fake" food hang over!!! On occasion when I've had to eat out...long journeys where the healthy snacks expire before the road ahead!!! And I've had to make the best of the bad choices, the "food" still taste artificial, over salted and/or over sweetened, and the next day it DOES feel almost like a hang over, both in my head and my stomach...yuk!

Do you have plans for your homegrown produce selection this year?
Given that I live at 7540ft of elevation, my growing season is often short. About the only thing I have success with growing is green beans, carrots and other hardy or semi-hardy vegetables. I DO have great raspberries though.

Good on you Anne for taking on the team leadership role!
I have not read Tosca's clean eating plan or books but I sure do love eating unprocessed, freshly made food from local organic or home grown produce. My palate rejects the smell or taste of "fake" food, and if I eat junk I feel horrible soon after, almost like a hang over.

I LOVE my Vitamix and use most days to make smoothies or post-workout protein drinks.

One of my favorite clean eats is from Matt Amsden's "RawVolution" book, it's a raw tostada made with an essene-type onion bread, and a variety of ground nuts (to make a nut "meat") topped with fresh salsa.
Makes my mouth water just thinking about it!!!

Hi! I'm really getting on the clean eating wagon! I bought a Vitamix blender and I am enjoying my post workout lunch smoothies! I just made one with red pepper, lettuce, tomato, carrots, apple, banana and flax. So easy to just blend up whole foods for my lunch! I've switched from instant oatmeal to cooking rolled oats for my morning oatmeal. In a few weeks I'm going to attempt a big batch of steel cut oatmeal and start making batches for the week. I'd love to here about your favorite clean eats!

Hi, Jan here. I am glad to see this group up and running again.

Have you ever noticed, those of you in the workforce, that lunch time in the kitchen or cafeteria "stinks"?? All those processed food vapors. Even something as simple as a can of soup tends to insult my nose.

I am not 100% clean, by any means, but I always have to giggle as I used to be an "outta the box,can or bag" kinda gal.

Hi Yolanda and welcome to the Eating Clean SparkTeam.

Changing to an Eating Clean regimen takes time for sure, but getting there is always an interesting process.

Hi Lizzie,

Yellow #5 sounds like it causes similar problems as the European food coloring (red) E124, a product derived from Cochineal. I remember there being a HUGE outcry about it in England many years ago. It was in everything, in particular foods aimed at children, and it was so toxic to some kids, it literally made them bounce off the walls!

I'm learning more and more about an intolerance I seem to be developing towards gluten. Not full blown gluten "allergy" or Coeliac disease, but just an increasing feeling that gluten is not agreeing with me, as well as it used to.

At 53 and post-menopause, I'm learning that a lot of things have changed in my life!!!

Enjoy your weekend too.
Be well.

Hello, I'm 36, married and have two daughters (6 &9). I have been moving toward a cleaner diet over the past year or so, but still have a long way to go. I am glad to see the team has been revitalized and look forward to getting to know all of you.

Morning Everyone!

Anne - Yellow dye #5 is a very common food coloring. It's used because it's cheap. It is in lots of things - Italian dressing, chocolate pudding, makeup, lipstick, eyeshadow, even medications. It is believed to cause hyperactivity in children yet is in nearly every kid's cereal. The FDA requires it to be in the list of ingredients so it's easy to spot once you're aware of it. I found out I was allergic to it about 35 years ago when I was tested for food allergies after a near fatal reaction to eggs. So I avoid it altogether.

Have a great weekend! Lizzie

Hi! My name is Theresa, and while I struggle with nutrition a lot, I do believe in eating clean. I believe that the closer something is to it's natural source, the better! However...being a college student who is subject to my cafeteria during the week, I really struggle with making good choices. So that is why I'm here. I've lost about 30 pounds so far, and I would really like to lose 10 more pounds. I'm glad this group is up and running again, and I'm looking forward to becoming an active member! :)

Hello and I'm so happy to be becoming active on here again! Like many of us, I've yo yo'ed for years, eaten clean and loved it only to fall back into old habits.

I've got about 120# to lose total, I've lost 80# before then gained it all back again, it's so hard to get started again, but once you're in the groove it's very easy. To me key is being prepared with your own foods.

Thanks for restarting this group and I look forward to supporting each other on this journey.

Angela

Hi Lisa and welcome.

Q: "Is it true you crave what your body is allergic too?"
A: I don't know if we crave the bad foods as much as we keep wanting to believe they're not that bad, and that we can have them some times!
Since my mid forties I've noticed that many foods "irritate" my stomach more than they used to. Some foods aren't as irritating, but I don't seem to tolerate them as well as I used to.
I was vegetarian for 25+ years, and could eat all the grainy vegetarian alternatives such as bean burgers, but these days, not so much.

I'm in the process of discovering how much of my occasional bloating is due to wheat and/or gluten. So far, all I know is that when I restrict wheat and glutens, I feel better, my stomach is (closer to being) flatter!

Hi my name is Lisa, age 44, I have 4 children and 1 grandchild. My youngest daughter has many food allergies with wheat (gluten) being her worst so I am constantly reading food labels. Have noticed I have some sensitivity to it also. I was diagnosed with a couple autoimmune diseases which after doing some research have found some correlation between gluten and it causing inflammation in the body which in turn can bring on autoimmune disease. I think eating clean is the best way to eat. I feel my best and don't have all the stomach issues as when I am not. I don't know why but I let my cravings get the best of me and eat alot of bread, etc. and then pay for it. Hard headed I guess! Is it true you crave what your body is allergic too?

Lizzie, welcome back....glad to have you aboard.

What is yellow dye #5 found in? How difficult is it to avoid?

Hi All! I've been a member of this team for quite a while now but haven't posted here recently.

I found the Clean Eating magazine several years ago when My Dr. recommended Sugar Busters. Eating Clean compliments it. I am highly allergic to sulfites, yellow dye #5, and eggs (life threatening) and have to be extremely careful of what I eat.

Anne, thank you for revitalizing this team. Together we can all make it work! Lizzie

WOW!!!

Doesn't it sound like so many of us have been sailing in the same boat?!?!?

MRS. CARLY: I know EXACTLY what you mean by "irritable and moody" when I don't eat clean!
In recent years, I've found that more and more foods cause me to bloat and feel uncomfortable. I'm still "experimenting" with finding which foods I need to avoid like the plague!

Crystal: "Lean and Mean" I like that! On my Spark Page I posted a picture of my legs (calf muscles) from a couple of years ago when I was running marathons, and my legs were "Lean and mean." I am working on getting those legs back!!!

Diane: I only have a couple of Tosca's books...I think one is a basic workout book.
Do you recommend any particular cookbook of hers?

Hi, I'm Diane. I lost almost 50 pounds about 5 years ago with the help of Tosca Reno's Clean Eating books. I have gained some (thank goodness not all!) back and have recommitted myself to clean eating to lose the bit I gained back and then some.

Hi Ladies, and everyone...I'm Crystal. Glad to meet you all! I lost a bunch of weight along with the help of Sparkpeople a few years ago. I'm now right on the cusp of turning 40 (in May) and would really like to lose the fifteen pounds that have gradually crept back on so that I am 40 and fabulous! (Plus I've got a slew of pants that are too tight and that just pisses me off. :) I love feeling "lean and mean" and want to be back there again.

Oh my journey has been never ending. My heaviest weight has been 220, I got down to 155, stayed there for 5 years, moved, and got back up to 193, lost it again and now I'm at good ole 163.

I'm ready to get the rest off, but I haven't been below 155 since I was in my early teens! Like I said, it's just a journey. My big thing is I just feel so much better when I'm eating clean. When I'm not I am irritable, moody, and sluggish. Weight loss is great, but I really like that I feel more energetic!

Re-posting my intro:

Hi everyone,

My name is Anne, and I am the new team leader.

I'm 53, married almost 27 years. Mom to two adults, and soon to be grandma to my first grand-daughter (April.)
From my late teens to early forties I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and only returned to eating fish & meat, as the change years begun to dictate that grains were no longer tolerated by my GI tract.
I still eat vegetarian/vegan and/or a raw diet much of the time, and all fish/meats are organic. I avoid all GMO foods.

In 2006 I weighed 236 pounds, but in the course of that year lost 76 pounds. Life's stresses caused me to regain 25-30 pounds, but I am working on disposing of those again, once and for all.

I enjoy running, walking, cycling, hiking, P90X, Yoga, rowing and just about all exercise. I'm a Certified Personal Trainer, and running coach.

I hope y'all will come back to the team so we can make it a fun place to hang out...talk about eating clean (Tosca Reno's program or just eating clean.)
