I actually noticed the same thing at a grocery store in Fairbanks. The organic cherries and tomatoes were actually cheaper than the regular ones.

I would also recommend price comparing. I have found that at Whole Foods (known for being $$) I can buy some organic items in bulk cheaper than the non-organic pre-packaged. Take a look around, write down and compare.

Wow, I've been on an orange kick too lately. Mmmmm, so good!

LOL Carolyn, we too are eating bags and bags full of oranges for some odd reason. We've just gone through our second bag this week. Weird.

Yeah, AniDuck, I have started putting just oil and vinegar on my salads. I know what's going into my body that way!

I am so confused about store-bought salad dressing. I just don't get why it's so, so popular. Making your own can be as easy as drizzling on a little bit of olive oil (toss) followed with a little bit of vinegar, and optional ingredients like a pinch of salt, a shake of herbs. a crumble of cheese, etc. So, so simple, healthy AND CHEAP!! Want it creamy? Put all those ingredients in a bowl and whisk, or in a blender or food processor (just more stuff to wash in my opinion!)

Unfortunately, we have all been trained to think we have to eat stuff made by other people (or machines!)

That's my little rant for the moment.

Hey Michelle, good to see you here. I, too, find that clean foods are so full of the vitamins, nutrients and enzymes my body needs, so I don't require the volume of food I consumed before. My body is satisfied with good nutrition. I do not buy all organic, but I do consider myself a clean eater. We buy chicken breast in the family size packages to save money. I do use beans, rice, quinoa, potatoes, and whole wheat pasta. We also eat a lot of nuts, seeds, fresh fruits and veggies. For some reason we are going through tons of oranges and bananas right now!!!

Hi there,
Actually my hubby and I have found sometimes it's actually CHEAPER to eat clean. Salad dressing is a biggie, bread is another(we make our own), you can also always buy frozen veggies. We stock up on those and loads and loads of beans of all sorts.

Like another SP member here said, beans are so versatile. You can do so much with them.

Just try baby steps for now. I promise it works!!
I've slowly weaned my husband and son away from white bread, sugary peanut butter, beef, and soda. (son doesn't have soda, just hubby and I sometimes)

Hi, there are different levels of "eating clean".
I think the main thing is just to avoid processed and refined foods as much as you can.

If you cant afford organic don't worry about that too much. Eat as clean as you can, and as little processed food as possible.

Here in the UK there are some issues around use of the label "organic" anyway. Esp regarding meat. Some farmers have very good meat but cant use the word organic for odd reasons.

Also don't think of fresh food as expensive, think of processed food as nasty and cheap. You are what you eat :) In the long run you should have more energy levels, less medicines and pills that the industry push a lot.

There are a few ways you can save money. First, not all produce needs to be organic. I found this site that lists foods that don't need to be organic, as well as the foods that you should eat organic. www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating
/e
at-safe/Save-on-Sustainable-Gallery-R>44032808
.

Other things you can do is to incorporate whole grains such as quinoa into your meals.

Beans are very versitile. You can substitute them for meat or add them to a meal and cut back on some of the meat (i.e. in soups, stews, chili) or with dishes that you use ground meat such as sloppy joes or tacos.

If you have a green market in your area shop for fresh produce grown locally - it's usually cheaper than the grocery store. Also, look around for mom & pop type produce stores or stands. I found one near me that had been there for a few years but I never noticed it. The prices are super cheap and the produce is very fresh, although probably not organic.

Hi! I'm new to this team and would really love to adopt the lifestyle of eating clean for myself and my family of four (two boys, 10 & 8) but we are on a tight budget.

I have gotten from the library 2 books by Tosca Reno to start reading and if anyone has any suggestions for other books I would greatly appreciate it!

I can't buy all my produce and poultry (we do not eat beef at home) organic but I'm trying to be more aware of labels, avoid trans fats and making more healthier substitutions. I would love advice for eating clean on a budget!

Thanks, and hope everyone has a great weekend!
