Welcome to the Team!

Hi all!

Eating clean (with one twist--NO grains) has helped me lose 40lbs over the past 20 weeks, bringing my total loss up to 48lbs. Just 3 more and I'm done! The only thing I still eat that's processed is spaghetti sauce (though I'm going to buy Ragu Light which is sugar-free) and Truvia. Other than that, nothing is processed. And this is coming from someone who grew up on frozen dinners and canned soup!! I also drink nothing but water, no carbonation, no caffeine.

Looking forward to reading more on these message boards!

I lost 70+lbs...and now the hard part, maintaining!

I have been eating clean most of the time for several months now. I have been on Sparkpeople for much longer and today I decided it was time to join a new team since my other ones are not too exciting right now. I was able to get my husband to agree with the eating clean lifestyle after watching several food documentaries. So I am in this group to hopefully learn more about how seasoned clean eaters do it and to find some new clean recipes :)

Hi,

My name is Al. I have been away from SP for a while, but now I am back, and more motivated to take control over my life and my body.

Have to say that I truly like veggies and fruit, and generally healthy choices, but so often I just run out of ideas and end up eating whatever gets in my way. I sincerely want to be lean and healthy, and enjoy my food, so I hope to get a lot of information here.

A.

Every day is a new day.

Hi everyone. I became active on SparkPeople last month. It's been a process learning to maneuver through SP but I am getting better. So much to take in. I've been on a personal mission for almost 2 years now learning about alternative health care, eating better and just in general how to take better care of myself. There is much more to learn though that is why I am hoping to pick up some very valuable information from this Team going forward. Learning is perpetual. Can anyone tell me how I get weekly updates from the Team. I think I answered no when I signed on but don't know to back track and check. Looking forward to getting healthier with you all. emoticon

Hey everyone, just joining this team. I've gone through phases of eating clean and definitely felt the benefits (very quickly too), but somehow keep falling into eating addicting junk foods. I hope that with support and people working on the same goals I can stay more motivated to stick with natural foods.

Hi, my name is Susan, and I've been Sparking since July 2010. I've lost 57#'s to date, but now I want to focus on clean eating--high nutrient foods. I ordered the book mentioned from the library and look forward to reading it.

I've just finished a 3-day juice fast and now I'm doing a 7-day challenge of not eating any processed or refined foods. This will give me 10 days of sugar free/caffeine free and then I'll make some new goals. I'm excited to learn from others who've embraced healthier eating habits.

I just bought the Eat Clean Diet Recharged yesterday since my local Borders store is closing down. I got it for a decent price. I'm feeling good about trying the principals in this book. I had a lady stop me because she saw me carrying it in the store and she had me show her where I found it. Then the lady who checked me out told me she tried it and lost 55 lbs in one year. So I am very excited to try the diet even though I know I've been eating fairly clean for a few years. I know my diet could be cleaner. emoticon

I'm diving in to the Eat Clean approach to a healthy lifestyle and diet. I've had Tosca's book, the Eat Clean diet since it was first published (I'm a rabid Oxygen reader), but I didn't have the dedication to commit to changing my eating habits. I'm determined to make it stick this time. I've eliminated salt, sugar, cheese, and creamy sauces from my diet and Have lost 1.5 lbs in 2 days! Like a previous poster, the problem for me had ALWAYS been diet as the exercise aspect comes pretty easy to me. I'm just exhausted by working out 3-4 hours a day to lose weight b/c I can't eat healthfully. So, I'm tackling my eating habits once and for all! The simplicity of the Eat Clean philosophy appeal to my innate laziness (lol). For those of you that have been living this life style for a few months, how long did it take for your palate to adjust to life without all the additives?

I wanted to repost this from the last page just to get it more in the beginning of the thread. I took this from one of SKINNYPUP's posts and I hope you don't mind (I just copied and pasted so nothing that follows originated from me):

Eating clean = getting lean!

(((This is for the newbies- Jump in folks and let me know if I'm missing anything)))

***** eat foods free of all unnatural additives, like High Fructose corn syrup or aspartame or fillers you can't pronounce or understand... Don't buy it, with some effort you can find similar products that probably taste better, too.

***** no man-made sugars, hydrogenated fats, trans-fats and other unnecessary ingredients (see first point above).

***** shop the outerparimeter of your local supermarket. Once you grasp the reality of whats ont he inside- you'll understand! (unless of course we are in some of the healthier stores). The blessing here is that eating well and food choices are becoming trendy. Great stuff available but you still have to READ labels!

****Change up to mostly if not always eating lean meat, (chicken, fish) or egg whites. Moderation is key.

****As mentioned above, lose simple cards, white flour, sugars including cane juice.

****Veggies and fruits must be part of your world. The more the better. Eating clean foods grown from our earth that haven't been altered. Don't drown them in fatty rich sauces laden with sodium, either!

****Water, water water. And don't wait until you are thirsty. That means you are already dehydrating...

**** Add two small snacks or "meals"... to keep your stomach happy, and quiet... (total 5-6 meals a day)

In addition:

**** snacks should also be clean: apples, fruit & nuts, or veggies (my personal tip is to try drinking a glass of water and then wait about 5 minutes to determine if your body was really just asking for water and not a snack) I got that great tidbit from Jay Robb (dot com)

**** Eat as organic as possible. There's far less junk in organic foods.

**** Choose whole foods as possible especially in grains/breads..

**** Plan for success. Get organized and prep your meals in advance at least one day ahead. Don't get tempted by simply not being prepared.

Eating Clean is really justeating super healthy! The focus is on less ingrediants and more simplicity. You eat Gods food and less or no manufactured foods by man. Simple Simple.

Good luck AND WELCOME! .

This I can attest to: Eating more veggies and fruits in ratio to your daily colrie intake will flush fat... You WILL notice a leaner body is starting to show through that fat!

Hi Everyone!

I am new to the team but not to SP. I started investigating clean eating last fall and a friend of mine (who I made friends with through SP) sent me Tosca's Eating Clean Recharged book as a gift. Today I spent a lot of time reading through this particular chat thread. I think the original post at the beginning of this thread should be reposted as it seems there were a lot of questions left unanswered by some people introducing themselves.

I just started incorporating the Eating Clean concepts today but had already removed some of the things from my diet after reading one of Jillian Michael's books. I can't wait to finish reading Tosca's book. I am an all or nothing type person so I don't do well with baby steps...so I am just jumping in...

Loved all the posts by URBANMOMMY and would love to see more.

Eating Clean is going to be my New Year's Resolution. I love to exercise but eating right has always been the hardest part of the equation for me....yet my trainer says that 80% of your success will be based on your nutrition. It takes a lot of willpower to eat differently than the people around you, but I'm going to try! The first thing I need to tackle is getting in my fruits and veggies every day...they are filling but not fattening and such a natural way to satisfy your hunger.

Hi, I'm Tanya, 37 living in Chicago. I just purchased the Clean Eating magazine yesterday and checked out from the library today "Your Best Body Now" by Tosca Reno. I became interested in this after reading some Oxygen magazines. I'm looking to get on this path and welcome tips and suggestions to getting and staying on it. Thanks in advance and I look forward to being on this team!

I'm new to this club, but I've been eating clean for 2 years. I lost 65lbs. in the first 10 mo. It really works & every part of my body feels so much better. No more headaches, don't get sick anymore, thicker & wavier hair & nails that grow like crazy and just so energetic you have to exercise! I never read any books about it, but I would love a cookbook.

Hello, I bought the book after an appointment with my neurologist...lol. Besides the fact that I gained 25lbs+ over the past winter, I was getting migraines constantly. Since I bought the book, I've lost 33lbs and rarely get migraines anymore. Two of my friends so far have also read my book. Can use plenty of help to stay on track as well as some new ideas for food choices.

I'm new to the team and I've been working at "1 ingredient" foods added to my meals. I have a long ways to go to truly "eat clean", but everyone has to start somewhere, eh!?!

I do have Tosca's cookbook, and will look for ways to incorporate her ideas. -- I'm not sure I can do the 5-6 meals a day, but I feel pretty comfortable with 4.

We already grow many of our fruits & veggies & buy beef in bulk from a local farmer. -- Anybody have any good crockpot soup recipes to recommend?

Hi everybody. Wow, there's a lot of great information on this post. I've been trying to eat clean for a few months now, but seem to fall off the wagon on the weekends. My husband is a bad influence, but probably because I allow him to be. He likes to go out to eat on the weekends and likes to drink beer while watching football (and so do I). I think it would be easier to keep this type of eating up if I didn't have someone who wanted to do the opposite. I'm also a vegetarian, so that makes things somewhat tougher too. Does anyone have any motivational tips or ideas to keep on track?

Hello, everybody. I've been eating apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, white chicken, & fish (grilled in a George Foremen-no oils)for 2 or 3 weeks. I drink water, green tea sweetened with Truvia, and coffee. I've lost 15 lbs.

I joined this group and another Clean eating team for ideas to keep me on track. Good luck everyone!

I so LOVE hearing you all talk about Eating Clean as a "lifestyle change." Because IT IS!!

As I say on my page: The journey is about progress...NOT perfection! Apply this same principle to your eating and you'll feel victorious!

If you feel like eating 5-6 clean meals a day is over-the-top, then start with one meal. And I recommend that breakfast be that meal. Make it the one perfectly clean meal you do...and don't worry about the others in the beginning. Eventually, enough clean breakfasts will lead to clean lunches; and enough clean breakfasts and lunches will lead to clean dinners..and then clean snacks. Before you know it, you've got it!

Stay positive and enjoy the journey of clean eating!

OK...I did the master cleanse a few weeks ago (I know I know, please see blog) The only up side to that was my body was flushed of all the sugar and carbs. So I started eating clean the day I got off it. I've never eaten clean in my life and I've been doing it faithfully for a couple of weeks now. The great part, I'm still losing weight. Yay me! Even if at some point I fall off the wagon for a while. I won't feel lost about how to get back on.

I haven't had sugar, flour, or anything processed or packaged. Once you start grocery shopping for a while, it gets easier. Take away snacks are easier to make and dinners become a snap.

I hope to keep eating clean and learn more recipes choices from you guys. Thanks!

When you fall down, finish your cupcake and get back up. Because it's never too late to start again.

I live an active lifestyle but I am going to trader joes/whole foods tomorrow to stock on some "clean" food!! :)

Here's some advice from an old woman...ok, middle-aged, but around long enough to have learned several lessons the hard way. Eating clean is a life-style change. It takes TIME. Don't be so hard on yourselves. A habit takes at least 21 days to take root, so each little change you make will need at least 21 days of solid attention before it becomes part of you. Start with little things. Trust me, you will see improvements in every little thing you do. If you like pizza, eat it, but make your own with organic/real ingredients and pat yourself on the back for doing that!! Life is too darn short for us to be constantly beating ourselves up for not doing everything "right". I applaud each and every one of you for joining sparkpeople and trying to eat cleaner. emoticon

I've been toying on and off with trying to eat a more fully-clean diet for a while, and recently requested Tosca's book from the library (it's very popular and they need to buy more copies!), so I thought I'd join the team. I'd consider myself capable of doing about 80-90% clean and 10% other - mostly because one day a week, my DH and i do laundry at his parents' house, and eating "clean" is pretty much impossible for those few hours. I know, I know, I really don't need to eat much while I'm there, and I do tend to overeat, but it's a struggle I'm working on. Glad to be a part of the team! :)

I've been eating clean for about 18 months, but have recently joined SparkPeople. My chiropractor recommends using coconut oil when cooking at high temperatures. Just to cook an egg, though, butter is fine, just only use what is necessary. Canola and soybean oil tend to be high in pesticides and soybeans are, more often then not, genetically modified. Organic olive oil is good, so long as it isn't used at high temperatures. Good luck.

Hello! I'm just starting out with clean eating and was wondering what oil is best to use. I've been trying to only eat what I can make, bake, grow (or catch i.e. fish) I am a vegetarian/pescatarian but am really interested in learning more about total clean eating.

I don't use butter and quit using spray "Pam". I had tried weight watchers and they recommended the sprays but they never felt right!
I eat TONS of beans and legumes, fruit, vegetables and minimal unprocessed cheese, lots of soy....am I on the right path?

The oils are what's throwing me for when I grill my fish....any help would be appreciated!!

The alcohol is going to be my biggest challenge. I love a glass of red wine with dinner!!!

Hi!
I just read an article in a super market magazine about Tosca's diet.. I'm very intersted. I've just bought the book and am so excited to read it. I'm a mom of two (ages 6 and 3), and feeling very tired all the time... also just feeling older than I should. I do eat healthy, but not clean. I am going to give it a whirl... this is one thing that I know can only help!! How can it be bad if you're not putting anything bad in your body!! Wish me luck. Looking forward to this group helping me out along the way.

Hey there everybody! I have been very interested in eating clean ever since I read Tosca's "Eat Clean Diet" book but have been having a hard time getting started on it. Thought maybe joining this team might help me out and give me some pointers on getting started. I never realized how difficult it could be to cut out processed foods! Everything nowadays is processed! Just need to re-adjust my thinking a little is all I guess.

Hi... I'm Kat... been on Spark for nearly 2 years and I have made a commitment to eating clean. I haven't read any Tosca books, but I have read Michael Pollan, and I have seen many documentaries on the evils of processing (and Monsanto)... One of the best on processing across the board (from meat to veggies to salt) is called Our Daily Bread, if you are interested.

I have been re-energized on the Clean Eating lifestyle in the past month, started examining the additives in food, and decided I was ready to "join the team".

I just joined this team after reading Tosca's new book recharged. I'm from NH and I love gardening. You can start some seeds indoors now. I usually wait till Mothers day to start my seeds. But after the freezing temps and snow that we had Wednesday..I would wait till at least Memorial day to plant. Trust me, I know it's hard to wait when the weather is nice but one 80 degree day doesn't count and you don't want to have to start over later. I also suggest buying your seeds NOW if you want certain plants and read up on how to grow them. It helps in planning your garden.

So glad to find this group! In the past month I really started switching my family over to organic clean foor choices. Like you said in moderation I haven't cut ALL the junk but there are lot more fruits and veggies and whole gains to choose from now and just a few "treats" for the kids (kids includes my husband but he is starting to come around) We are also attempting to start going organic in our home garden as well!
My Grocery store has a lot of organic choices but still find it hard to find a veriety of meats free of hormones and antibotics.

Hi, New to Eating Clean...not new t Spark (here since Feb '10.
I have a spark buddy who is on this team, so out of curiosity I started reading some posts, and then ordered Tosca's book.
For a person with IBS, this way of eating is fantastic. She encourages sweet potatoes, squashes, all of the soluble fiber foods I am supposed to eat for my stomach....so I am thrilled.
Today I made several rice/couscous/quinoa recipies, and packaged them in little containers for the week. I even made up her breakfast meals and packaged them up too, and cut up vegis, fruits, and am making main meals tomorrow for the next week.
If its not easy, and ready to go, I find I don't put out the effort to make something....so even though its time consuming, it works for me.
I am just taking one day at a time. I havent lost much weight doing other things, so its worth a try...and this is a plan you can do for life, which is important for me.
So I am starting cooler 2 tomorrow....wish me luck!
Andrea

Love smoothies.....probably my fave breakfast, but just can't do in winter months here in IL--could in TX, tho'. Just need warmer climate. Anyway, looking forward to doing those again. Include yogurt plus fruits & ground flax seed. Soon will be either shopping exclusively for produce at farmer's market or growing my own. emoticonemoticon

Have you read the clean eating book this team is based on (I haven't yet waiting for it from my local library) because I think in there would answer all of our questions.

Oh Right now I'm still eating it, its almost gone and I'm going to start the making smoothies later on. I believe you breakfast is clean. Were the veggies and salsa organic? some would make that argument but I'm not on the whole organic food is the best thing for you bandwagon yet since in my job we test things that are "organic" and they come up positive on our tests. (although we don't test fruits or veggies) I'm going to use our farmers markets once they open in May/June to get most of my produce from :)

Ha! Funny, but at top of this post was ad for Special K.
So IS there a list of "clean foods?" Do you eat any cereals? Today I had scrambled eggs (1 egg, 1 egg white removed from my fresh eggs I get from a little old lady, freshly collected), veggies & salsa plus 1/2 a mango. Cooked in 1t. of olive oil. So does that qualify, or....not?

I just started clean eating and going to buy all fresh foods, I live in NH so I can't start may garden for a month or so (I think going to talk to the local nurseries) but my major concern is what to do for breakfast I love my cereal and I know my special k isn't clean :) but it has to be quick and easy oh and cheap :)

Also I am also a vegetarian that only eats fish now :) I don't eat egg because I think they are gross but I can do the occasional egg white omelet.

I can't wait to plant my garden! 1 more month maybe earlier.
I have just started following a clean eating menu from the Clean Eating magazine. 75% is what I was doing without knowing it. I just had to make a few small changes. I will get the hang of it soon.
After 2 years of gaining and losing the same 5 pounds over and over and over again, I am glad to say that after 3 weeks of mostly clean eating, the scale is moving in the right direction again!
I have only read a few posts here, but I love all the information!

Buying a small greenhouse can be expensive, fertilizing, extra electricity and all that, but thats if you live in a cold place like me ofcourse.. Anyway start with herbs and tomatoes in your window until you feel more comfortable.. Im starting a "window-garden" now lol.. :) GINGER where do you grow yours?

By the way hello, im new and preggers too! emoticon

My only suggestion is grow your own produce & herbs. Had a friend once who bartered with a farmer (she was a massage therapist). I'm pescetarian (vegetarian except I eat fish), so cost of meat not an issue for me.

Wow, 10#....that's emoticon
What does this mean: ..."in w/c on 02?"

This is my third day of eating clean/exercising--even gave away 2 chocolate truffles I got while working with pastry chef. Biked Th & Fri, 5-6 miles each day....with destinations, not just to bike, since that & my feet are only modes of transportation. Also trying to eat "30 ingredients," like Japanese do & yesterday I actually DID IT!!!
Today making broth from "garbage" I had in freezer & using it to make emoticon16-bean, vegetarian/vegetable soup. Smells YUMMY in here!!!
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!! emoticon

First day here......only been trying to "eat clean" for 30 years or so. Eat mostly vegetarian, but still have weight to lose. Have belonged to 3 organic food co-ops emoticonover the years, made own bread, fresh meals (mostly when married & SAHM). emoticonLoved it & felt absolutely fabulous, so am dying to get back to it. Except for the sweets/candy emoticonI gravitate toward in my weak moments, I'm not too far away; just need that consistency. Even purchased raw dairy products from local farmer when I lived in TX (before moving back to IL).

I believe clean eating means that there are no preservatives, chemicals, or anything else that you pronounce. The less processed the better.

I would say dried cranberries are clean with sugar or with juice. I eat them the way they are as they are very sweet when they are dried or I soak them in water over night (put the glass into the refrigerator).

Are they considered clean if they are sweetened with juice? Much better than sugar probably. I actually just saw some at the health food store yesterday and was wondering that. I'll have to pick up a bag next time I'm there. Thanks!

I found some that were sweetened with cherry juice, from a whole sale company called Azure Standard.

Thanks INSPIRED42, I have looked for craisins w/out added sugar and have been unable to find them. I've checked local supermarkets and several health food stores. Maybe Wholefoods? I wonder if I could make them myself? It can't be that difficult, probably cheaper too.

Does anyone know if Grapenuts cereal is considered clean? I love steel cut oats, but just don't see myself eating hot oatmeal once it starts to get warm outside. Thanks!

Inspired42 - I was looking for a photo to show how hard boiled eggs are presented in a classic French café, but did not find any. There is one in Vienna. In case I get there soon, I'll make a photo.
Of course no one likes to eat eggs every day, even though the egg yolk is full of great nutrients. + new research says that the cholesterol in eggs is positive. (There is positive and negative cholesterol - you will know).

CHEESE is a great snack. I love cheese, though eat it only from time to time, as most cheese is made of homogenized milk - which means: cooked with very high temperature = not right for a raw food eater. When I can, I buy cheese made of raw milk.
Otherwise, I see most cheese as clean food(though: read the label - not all which says cheese, really is cheese). I love French cheese the most. Brie, Camembert. Brie has less cal as Camembert, but tastes the same. Goat cheese is nice. But also mozzarella. It goes wonderfully with air-dried ham..... I strongly believe I could fill a book about cheese. I actually have one.
Only a few, but there are sausages and hams, which are clean and good snacks. But read the label, as often there is flower and other stuff in sausages, which you might not want to eat. Italian and Spanish air-dried ham thinly cut is delicious.
Not for me, but I would guess that pickles are clean, which make with ham and sausage a nice snack.

MRS FLEX- I would just check the Craisin ingredients.. they almost always contain sugar. I use carob powder in my coffee sometimes, and it's clean (again, I would check the label on the chips but unsweetened sounds like a good sign). I've been feeding the granola bars to my fiance, and tonight I snacked on some edamame and egg whites.
CHRISTA-MARIA- I love the suggestion about the egg. It's something that is portable and I can eat rather quickly between appointments. I am also thinking a food lower in carbohydrates like that may help with my weight loss efforts. If I include the yolk, I should be satisfied through bedtime. Thanks for the great idea!!

Anyone's thought on mozzarella string cheese? I'm assuming there is no way that could be clean...

I do, however, include reduced fat feta in my salad (to replace "grilled chicken"-- probably full of fillers and additives!) If anyone is an expert on cheeses, please fill me in!! Thanks :)

I can't answer questions from MRSFLEX. Whoever comes in next, please read the comment after this one, maybe you can.
I am a raw food eater, which is clean food not cooked, and so I do not eat anything which can't be eaten without being cooked (includes all grain products - they turn into sugar the moment you ate them, potatoes, rise and more.) I do make exceptions: chocolate with high cocoa content, seldom some jam, wine for dinner = is also sugar, boiled eggs - I eat eggs raw, but sometimes make them sunny side up or boil them).
Hard boiled eggs: In all classic French cafés is an egg-holder made of metal in which are several hard boiled eggs. French people drink coffee and when hungry, they take one of the eggs, open it on the bar, put salt on it and bite in it. What Inspired42 can do, is, play French and eat the egg as if it is a delicacy. Have some pieces of bellpepper with it - the colors look nice.
When there is a kitchen, there is a refrigerator, so you can take all kinds of foods with you.

Inspired42, I have a homemade granola bar recipe that I make, though I'm still unsure if they are considered "clean" as I am fairly new to the lifestyle. It's basically a combo of dried fruit, (I use craisins, raisins, figs, dates, etc), chopped walnuts/pecans (or any combo of nuts), a small amount of unsweetened carob chips (not sure if they are considered clean), a little agave, 2 TBS whole wheat flour (or flour of you choice), baking soda, baking powder, and a mixture of water and flaxmeal. They are then baked and tend to hold shape pretty well (sometimes they are a bit crumbly) They have between 180-200 calories per bar depending on the ration of nuts and fruits used. I weigh all the ingredients before chopping them to get a more accurate idea of the calorie count. If you are interested in the recipe just let me know. I am not at home and just going by memory for the ingredients. If anyone has any input on how clean the ingredients for these bars are feel free to comment. Thanks.
