How many triathlons have you done? One try-a-tri (supersprint) in 2013.

Favorite triathlon? Still in my dreams.

Strongest leg of triathlon? Swimming. I love swimming, even though I'm slow.

Weakest leg of triathlon? The run.

Why do you tri? FUN!!! to mix up my training (I used to only swim). For motivation to train more, longer, and harder. to be with my friends and family that tri too!!

Must have equipment? A very good sports bra, and a sense of humor.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? My friend told me: "Dead last beats didn't finish, which trumps never started". My motto.

How many triathlons have you done? 2 sprints

Favorite triathlon? Not sure I've done my fave yet.

Strongest leg of triathlon? Swim. If it's not a tri, I'd say running, but by the end of a tri, I'm tanking!

Weakest leg of triathlon? Bike, partly because I have occasional depth perception issues.

Why do you tri? I started because it scared me, now I love the crosstraining.

Must have equipment? Bike helmet, running shoes that aren't worn out, my water bottle.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Make stretching a regular part of your training. Keep those muscles relaxed!

How many triathlons have you done? One sprint and a relay team for a Half Iron Man

Favorite triathlon? It's a toss up between the two... they were both fun and different from each other.

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike

Weakest leg of triathlon? Run.... numb-bum :(

Why do you tri? I love the variety, I love the challenge.

Must have equipment? Elastic laces in the shoes... they go on so much faster!

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Well I am a bit in-experienced, but my tip for me is that I need more practice with brick workouts (bike to run) to get used to the feeling of getting off the bike and start running!

How many triathlons have you done? ZERO!

Favorite triathlon? Giant question mark.

Strongest leg of triathlon? I think it will be running, but my main goal is just to finish.

Weakest leg of triathlon? biking. Went to start my training and realized my 20 yr old bike...well its like your first car when it died. I'm in mourning and having a hard time deciding what to get. (Budget, other uses?)

Why do you tri? Need a goal to work for in my workouts.

Must have equipment? Dunno yet. Very fond of my iPod but I dont know if I'm allowed to use in competition.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? As I'm just trying for my first, I think the biggest thing is find a support network. Its a little intimidating to have to answer to them if you shortchange your workout!

Strongest leg of triathlon? Transition 1

Weakest leg of triathlon? Run

Why do you tri? I like the change in each element - helps to keep me motivated to work out.

Must have equipment? Tri shorts and top; road bike; clip in shoes; elastic laces and lace locks for your running shoes.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? NO SOCKS! It saves a ton of time in transition. Do not dry off in transition. Just get your helmet and shoes on and go! Also, relax and enjoy the bike ride. Some of the rides are in the most beautiful places - so be sure to enjoy the scenery!

How many triathlons have you done? Starting to train for my first one next summer some time

Favorite triathlon? looking for some good ones in New England - If you have suggestions message me!!

Strongest leg of triathlon? Yet to be determined

Weakest leg of triathlon? Probably the run.

Why do you tri?
I've wanted to do one for a while.
I get bored doing the same thing and like a challenge.
I broke my back 3 years ago and was told I'd never walk again. I did a 5K last April & doing a 10K October. Working out everyday and getting healthy/strong is a MUST, tri-ing gives me something to work towards.

Must have equipment? good shoes, good attitude

Tips for beginners and/or pros? I'm listening!!! :)

How many triathlons have you done?
3 sprints, one more next month to finish the 2011 season

Favorite triathlon?
Nashua Y Tri in NH. The bike is a two-loop course and is shared with part of the run, so you have the opportunity to pass and cheer for your friends often!

Strongest leg of triathlon?
Swim, I love it!

Weakest leg of triathlon?
Bike, I still ride a hybrid! LOL! I'm buying a new bike next month.

Why do you tri?
It's a great way to keep exercise from getting boring. Plus, it's fun to say, "I'm a triathlete." :)

Must have equipment?
Garmin 310xt, desoto tri capris, handkerchief (my nose constantly runs when I'm working out)

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
Always pack your gear the night before a workout! It never fails, I will forget something if I try packing 5 minutes before I'm walking out the door! (Like my underwear, when I'm on my way for a swim.. man, I hate that!)

Favorite triathlon? Don't have one yet

Strongest leg of triathlon? I think will be the bike

Weakest leg of triathlon? The run will be my hardest.

Why do you tri? I need the motivation to get into shape. I also like the thoughts of multisport.

Must have equipment? You can let me know that, I'm learning.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Just do it! Push yourself to your best. You will be a star regardless of placement.

Weakest leg of triathlon? swim, bike and run...haha!

Why do you tri? Knowing that I can push my mental and physical limits.

Must have equipment? road bike, goggles, wet suit and a good pair of running shoes.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Not sure, still a beginner myself

Favorite triathlon? Octomax @ Innsbruck, MO

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike

Weakest leg of triathlon? Run

Why do you tri? The high from overcoming this physical endeavor makes my normal problems minimal.

Must have equipment? trisuit & a towel

Tips for beginners and/or pros? make reachable goals...like finishing. Just finishing ANY tri is a huge accomplishment. As with any sport/task....on any given day, there is always someone who can beat you, and someone who is slower than you. Just do it.

How many triathlons have you done? about 20

Favorite triathlon? Lake Geode Challege, Dansville, IA

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike... but all are pretty close to equal

Weakest leg of triathlon? None

Why do you tri? I love the challege of trying ot be fast in all 3 disciplines.

Must have equipment? Bike that fits well and gets you in an aero, but comfortable position. Good trisuit, good pair of race flat with elestic laces. Wetsuit for those early and late season open water swims.

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
1) Start with with shorter distances and work your way up.
2) Ironman is not the be all, end all of races... but and good triathlete should at least complete a HIM for the experience. going fast in shorter race presents it's own challenges.
3) Speed AND endurance are best gained form intervals and speedwork, not garbage miles.
4) Any bike that's set-up and fits correctly, can be faster than the most expensive bike you can buy.
5) Cycling is the longest part of any triathalon and therefore, most of your training time should focus there.
6) If you want a fast transition, ditch the socks.

Favorite triathlon? Carillon Point, Kirkland WA (sprint)

Strongest leg of triathlon? Swim

Weakest leg of triathlon? Run

Why do you tri? I like the variety of it so I don't get bored, and how it works every muscle in my body. I feel like I am a superhero when I am done. LOL

Must have equipment? A good bike. So far I've rented from a bike shop for the races. I plan to use my tax refund this year to invest in a good one.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Start with the basic equipment and you'll learn what upgrades are important as you go.

How many triathlons have you done? 8, 6 Sprints and 2 Olympic distance as relays

Favorite triathlon? Dam It Man, in T or C New Mexico

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike. I am 47 years old and just learned to swim a year ago.

Weakest leg of triathlon? I had both knees rebuilt 2 years ago and I can't run....I race-walk.

Why do you tri? I think it is the ultimate test of a person. I am competitive and I refuse to let age render me unable to compete. I also have lost over 100 pounds, learned to swim, and improved my health tremendously because of a triathlete.

Must have equipment? A good bike fit, comfy tri suit or shorts and top, comfy and properly fit running shoes, goggles, tire repair kit, and a water bottle and lots of sunscreen and a hat.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Have fun and don't EVER panic. Most likely, the first event you do you will find someone else in your shoes as well..befriend them. Go watch a tri or join a tri team or a triathlete that will sit down with you and walk you through the process. Practice and refrain from over-training which I believe is the number one problem of the young/beginner triathlete.
Wet suits? I guess it depends on where you are swimming and temperatures. Wetsuit warehouse has many always on sale. I don't think you need the most expensive one available when you first start out. Farmer John or Janes work great if the water is not too cold. Be sure and practice getting in and out of a wetsuit BEFORE your event.
Once you start "Tri-ing" you will find yourself amidst the friendliest, most supportive people you have ever been around. Yes, sometimes there is one that isen't but they are the minority!

How many triathlons have you done? 13? 14? Mostly sprints, but at least four olympic

Favorite triathlon? Austin Tri -- great race, well organized, awesome race community, great after party!

Strongest leg of triathlon? definitely bike.

Weakest leg of triathlon? the other two (run and swim) are about equal, for different reasons.

Why do you tri? Community, the personal challenge, goals, keeps me from getting bored

Must-have equipment? I love my tri bag -- everything fits neatly and has its place. I also like cute socks.

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
It's easy for me to panic and get wrapped up in getting through transition quickly, but that can backfire. But if I have a plan that I've practiced in advance, I try to ignore what everyone else is doing around me during set up so I don't get any bright ideas about things to change at the last minute.
I also had a coach whose mantra was "Slow is smooth;smooth is fast." Repeating that to myself in transitions helps me to get through quickly and efficiently.

How many triathlons have you done? 2 supersprints, 5 sprints, and 2 aquathlons (all in 2006-07 though, had to quit due to a knee injury)

Favorite triathlon? Los Angeles - I loved biking through the whole city with all the roads closed.

Strongest leg of triathlon? swim, I guess

Weakest leg of triathlon? bike (at this point I've started training again but only run and swim)

Why do you tri? I wanted to find out if I could. Now that my knee is better, I'm determined to start again, and keep going INJURY FREE!!!!

Must have equipment? Awesome running shoes (get fitted at a real running store!)

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Crumple up your race number and flatten it out again before attaching it to your belt, then it won't flap annoyingly.

Must have equipment? prescription swim goggles (so I can sight properly & find my way around transition area) AND a race belt! (Having the race number/bib belt just makes that pesky number one less thing to worry about on course)

You never work out and regret it. You never go for a run and when you are done say “I wish I would have just stayed home”. You never climb a mountain, get to the top and say “I should have just been content to stay where I was.”

Favorite triathlon? Trek Women's Series Sprint in Pleasant Prairie, WI - I cut 24 minutes off my best finishing time!

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike

Weakest leg of triathlon? It's a toss-up between the swim and the run, but I'll go with the run - I lose the most time there.

Why do you tri? It makes me feel strong, and it surprises people. I don't look like a triathlete. I like to shatter stereotypes.
emoticon

Must have equipment? Bike maintenance kit. I don't want to carry my bike - I want my bike to carry me!

Tips for beginners and/or pros...I like Anna's tips. But I'll also add: figure out which foods sit well with you and don't experiment just before or during the race.

This is my one shot at life. I will not give up on myself.

Favorite triathlon? Aflac Iron Girl Sprint Triathlon- Syracuse, NY

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike

Weakest leg of triathlon? Unfortunately, I have to say the run. Although I consider myself a "runner" more then a swimmer or cyclist. That is the area that my times are the slowest and I feel the worst.

Why do you tri? I LOVE IT!!! Bumping up the distance to an Olympic on August 1st. Very excited.

Must have equipment? Hmmm...I guess good fitting clothes. I have very sensitive skin and one loose thread or seam can be very painful.

Tips for beginners and/or pros... Put in the training time, take rest days and enjoy the race.

How many triathlons have you done? 4

Favorite triathlon? Naperville Sprint Triathlon

Strongest leg of triathlon? NONE! Maybe the swim if I had to choose!

Weakest leg of triathlon? Probably the bike...But...I'm working hard on it. Got a new road bike, am taking computraining classes and now do LONG group rides on the weekends trying to keep up with some speedy guys!

Why do you tri? It started out because turning 50 was depressing! It was a way to counter age! Now...it's an addiction....I CAN'T STOP! Doing my first Olympic this year but training like I'm doing a Half!

Must have equipment? Quality running shoes a MUST! You'll injure yourself and be unable to do any of the sports if you don't invest in good shoes. I don't run in anything that isn't under $100 and not bought at a reputable running store.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Learn mental toughness... Break down your training and race distances into sections. Train with others (Masters Swim Teams, Riding and Running Clubs or Triathlon Clubs)...they are encouraging, motivating and you naturally compete with one another. Not to mention...you make new friends. The triathlon world is one of the friendliest groups of people you'll ever meet. Enjoy the journey. A race is merely the celebration of your new healthy lifestyle!

How many triathlons have you done? About 6 (off the top of my head)

Favorite triathlon? Great Illini Challenge Half Iron Distance

Strongest leg of triathlon? Definitely the swim!

Weakest leg of triathlon? It's a toss up between the bike and the run...but I just got a sweet new ride, so we'll see how that changes things!

Why do you tri? It gives me the motivation to work out...and I also like challenging myself to see what I'm capable of.

Must have equipment? A good pair of running shoes and a foam roller (I suffer from IT Band syndrome!)

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Visualize yourself crossing the finish line and how you feel at that moment - remember that feeling when you are struggling with motivation during all those training sessions!

I have done 1 triathlon, May 30, 2009 Ruidoso Athletic Club Triathlon

RAC tri. was my first only, and favorite!

I fancy myself a decent swimmer, but I certainly need to work on my run skills!

I tri because it is something that intrigues me, a mountain to climb so to speak. I don't know that I will ever win one, or win an age group, but I can always have a goal, and an opponent to slay.

Apart from the basics, I don't think I could live without my RS100 heart rate monitor.

I absolutely dislike cliche's, but it is simple, just do it. You will at no time in your life regret it.

Favorite Triathlon? We'll see...

Strongest leg of triathlon? I'm not sure yet, but probably swim.

Weakest leg of triathlon? I am guessing the bike.

Why do you tri? I needed a concrete goal to get me off the couch and working out regularly and I've always wanted to try a triathlon.

Must have equipment? Just the basics, running shoes, bike, goggles.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Hmmm... no tips yet, but I'll probably need them.

How many triathlons have you done: 1 (second is in 1 week from today

Favorite Triathlon: So far the Danskin Chicagoland Tri, but that is the only one I have done, so hard to judge. However it was a great experience last year.

Strongest Leg: Cycling, no question!

Weakest Leg: Swim by a long shot!

Why do you tri: It started as a way to celebrate my weight loss and prove how fit I had become, but now I just love the excitement and experience in general!

Must have equipment: A road bike (did a mountain bike last year and it slowed me down), and a trisuit! Talk about easy in transition!

Tips for beginners and/or pros: For beginners, always get in at least one open water swim before the event as it is a totally different sensation than swimming in a pool!

Favorite triathlon? Sandman Triathlon (It's the only one I've done: 2007, 2008, and soon-to-be 2009!)

Strongest leg of triathlon? Too close to call. On my first tri, my highest rank was in the swim. On my second tri, my highest rank was in the run.

Weakest leg of triathlon? Bike, probably. It's hard to train without owning one!

Why do you tri? It's fun! I like switching things up. By the time you're sick of one part, it's over and you're moving on to the next leg! And it's less stressful to my body than running long distances repeatedly.

Must have equipment? A swimsuit, running shoes, and a bike would be great (but my mom is nice enough to let me borrow hers every once in a while, so I can't complain!)

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Join a Masters swim class at your local rec center or wherever they're offered! Great training. It's motivating to know that I'm expected to be there MonWedFri.

Favorite triathlon? my first sprint!

Strongest leg of triathlon? swim

Weakest leg of triathlon? run

Why do you tri? I hate running and am really terrible at it. I figured I could do this because I could do challenging races yet not have to run a marathon in the process!

Must have equipment? sunglasses for the bike when bugs hit your face like little projectiles and quick laces for my shoes.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? join a clinic or get some training, don't skip breakfast because you're nervous (biiiigg mistake!)

Favorite triathlon? The Austin Tri (Olympic length)

Strongest leg of triathlon? Cycling

Weakest leg of triathlon? Swimming

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
Don't get too wrapped up in how you're doing compared to those around you, but look around during the race (especially transition!) and learn from others' techniques, strategies, and tricks.

How many triathlons have you done? Probably a dozen or so sprints, did my first oly last season

Favorite Triathlon: Marshmallowman

Strongest leg of triathlon? Swimming (my natural buoyancy comes in handy)

Weakest leg of triathlon? Shuffling (aka really slow running)

Must have equipment? Enell sports bra, my bff

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Have fun, enjoy the experience! As a consistent back of the packer, I am always just thrilled to finish. And like others have mentioned, encouraging your fellow triathletes makes a huge difference.

How many triathlons have you done? nine - all sprint tri, all the time!

Favorite triathlon? Minneman in Minnesota. Lovely course and kind people.

Strongest leg of triathlon? Swimming - I also do open water swims.

Weakest leg of triathlon? Running - I just chug along.

Why do you tri? After I did my first 2-mile swim, someone said to me that if I could do that, I could surely do a tri. And they were right!

Must have equipment? Really good fitting tri shorts. I've bought several different ones over the past two years but I always go back to my first pair. I just hope they don't get a hole. Other than that, well fitting goggles. And comfy shoes - I wear Mizunos.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Brick workouts - I am such a bad runner that I need all the practice I can get. Also, it's nice to know that that "wobbly" feeling will go away. Also, don't forget to re-hydrate.

Favorite triathlon?: - well, since I've only done one, I guess that's my fave!

Strongest leg of triathlon? - Run

Weakest leg of triathlon? - swim

Must have equipment? - a good bike

Hi my name is Cathy and I'm a tri-aholic. I'm addicted to everything triathlon related. Anyway here is a little bit of info about me:

First name: Cathy

How many triathlons have you done? 7 - sprint X 2, olympic X 3, HIM X 2

Favorite triathlon? I like the longer distances. I did Ironman Muskoka 70.3 this year, it was such a challenge I'm signed up for next year.

Strongest leg of triathlon? Run

Weakest leg of triathlon? Nutrition

Why do you tri? I've loved running for years, since taking up tri I've discovered I love swimming and biking also. My limiter is nutrition which I am working on in this off season.

Must have equipment? For me aerobars. They've allowed me to be so much more comfortable on my bike on long rides.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Get a good bike fit, being comfortable on the bike is so important. I have no tips for pros since I'm such a beginner and so slow I will never see them.

Run

Weakest leg of triathlon?

I need discipline and goals to follow and I love calling myself a "Triathlete"

How many triathlons have you done?
I did the swim leg on a relay team in a 1/2 Iron Man about 2 months ago and yesterday i did a sprint (all myself, no more team to help) :)

Favorite triathlon?
I loved being on the relay team, but was so proud to finish the sprint on my own.

Strongest leg of triathlon?
The swim - hands down.

Weakest leg of triathlon?
Probably the bike, although I'm not a very stong runner either.

Why do you tri?
I love to swim and want to get into better shape. I *can* run and bike, although not well, so it's a great reason to practice. Also, my husband is getting into it with me and it's one of the best feelings and most fun things for us to train together and support eachother.

Must have equipment?
swim goggles/cap & comfortable/good shoes

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
Beginners: train with a friend and keep your goals small! My only goal for my 1st race was simply 'finish'. :) Also - just have fun. There is no use busting your butt (and you likely won't continue) if you don't enjoy it.
Pros: it makes such a difference when one of us newbies is struggling and one of you takes a moment to yell out an encouraging word - there were a few times during my race that i really needed a comforting 'hang in there! You can do it!' and someone always appeared (zooming by, but none the less) to shout one out :)

Ok, I just joined the team, and I liked this way best for introducing myself.

First name:
Julie

How many triathlons have you done?
None. My first one will be the Pumpkinman in Las Vegas on Oct. 18

Favorite triathlon?
None, yet.

Strongest leg of triathlon?
I'm thinking run?

Weakest leg of triathlon?
Right now, I think bike. Though I agree with Adrian, thinking of the transitions scares me silly.

Why do you tri?
I needed to get my mind off my funky weightloss issues for awhile, and my trainer suggested this. Once I got past thinking he was NUTS... well, the idea grew on me. Believe me, I'm not thinking about my WEIGHTLOSS right now!!

Must have equipment?
Not sure yet, but probably running shoes, a good helmet and some sort of usable swim/bike/run wear?

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
Beginners - what a great old guy told me at my first 5K - listen to your body, run your own race.
Pros - PLEASE, be patient with us newbies who have no idea what we're doing???

How many triathlons have you done?one official sprint

Favorite triathlon?that I have done would be the only I have done so far. Even though the unofficial one I did at the gym on my 40th birthday just for me was special too. But I still think "THE GOAL" is an ironman.

Strongest leg of triathlon?I originally would have said swim, in actuality it was the run.

Weakest leg of triathlon?the swim

Why do you tri?I LOVE all three sports, and as a form of self defense to stay one step faster, stronger, smarter, than my sons for as long as possible!

Must have equipment?i-pod with or without headphones for RUNNING only, or a computer to track my miles. A BABYSITTER (though sometimes I will put them in the jogger-does mess with the pacing and stride)GOOD running shoes&BRA!!!

Tips for beginners and/or pros? beginners-run/bike/swim for a reason or a with a friend. It makes it easier to stay consistent. general- keep it fun, make changes occasionally

How many triathlons have you done?
One. Although I have done 3 Sprint Duathlons and an Oly.

Favorite triathlon?
None, but I love the Oly distance (10k run-40k bike-5k run)

Strongest leg of triathlon?

Weakest leg of triathlon?
Transitions. Seriously, they suck. I ran out of T2 with my bike helmet still on once.

Why do you tri?
Cos I can't focus on training one sport for any length of time.

Must have equipment?
Decent running shoes.

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
Train hard, rest harder.

EDITED cos I can't count my races either...

Strongest leg of triathlon? Run

Weakest leg of triathlon? Swim

Why do you tri? I love working on each leg of the tri, its keeps my workouts interesting.

Must have equipment? Good goggles and good running shoes.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Have fun, do your best and don't worry about what anyone else is doing, just run your own race (at least that's what I'll be telling myself come race day)!

How many triathlons have you done? 7 sprints

Favorite triathlon? Cohasset, MA

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike, the downhills specifically.

Weakest leg of triathlon? transitions, I finally figured most of it out this year since I've done more than one this season...still learning how to be efficient and faster.

Why do you tri? To challenge myself, and to train with my sisters...the saturdays throughout the year are more fun than race day - keeps us connected.

Must have equipment? A great bike.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? As far as gear goes, buy nice not twice. Buy the best you can afford at the time, don't skimp because you will replace cheap equipement. Train further than your race day distance, it makes it much easier on race day.

Strongest leg of triathlon? bike

Weakest leg of triathlon? swim

How many triathlons have you done? 1-2/3 (didn't do the swim on the 1st one but did the swim and run)

Favorite triathlon? My last one - I finally finished

Strongest leg of triathlon? Apparently the swim

Weakest leg of triathlon? Run

Why do you tri? For the challenge.

Must have equipment? Mask & snorkel, good road bike (and helmet), good running shoes, and a good cheering section

Tips for beginners and/or pros?
To the pros: Don't ever forget what it was like when you first started
To the beginners: Working through any mental blocks will help you come a long way

Liz,

Good luck with the HIM. Very exciting. Make sure you tell us about it. My first half is in September, I can't wait.

Have fun.

How many triathlons have you done? 2 sprints, 3 olympics - 1st half-ironman is in 10 days!

Favorite triathlon? Lake Geneva Triathlon. Not the most organized race in the world, but holds a special place in my heart since that's when my husband and I started dating - right after I beat him by 20 minutes in our first Olympic tri!!

Strongest leg of triathlon? Bike

Weakest leg of triathlon? Run??? I can always get to the end with my "just run" philosophy... but definitely where I have the most room for improvement!

Why do you tri? I did my first to meet a life goal and got hooked. Now it's something I keep doing because it's time for my husband and I to share.

Must have equipment? A bike helmet!! Don't leave home without it. Your family will thank you :)

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Don't let a hard training day get you down. Tomorrow is a new day and it's yours for the conquering!! Even the best of the best have bad days...

Running my first marathon October 12, 2008.

My husband and I are running with Team World Vision to help build wells for clean water in Zambia. Check the website to learn more and help us reach our goal!

Why do you tri? Started as a weight loss plan. Now I'm hooked and it has become a passion that I don't want to live without.

Tips for beginners and/or pros? Train your weakness not your strength.
