I am jumping in on this discussion very late, but thought I would throw out my two cents. I would stronlgy recommend you contact your state's RID Board and ask what the requirements are for becoming an interpreter AND find out which colleges in your area are really providing quality interpreter programs. Some of those programs offered at colleges are a joke. People think they can take a few ASL classes and voila, become interpreters! Not so. It takes years of training to be a great interpreter and not everyone can interpret in all situations. There are extra qualifications/training to interpret in legal setttings (legal terminology is very specialized). Then you have medical interpreting and mental hratlh interpreting, you also have to be able to interpret at the client's language and cognitive level. Some clients may be cognitively low functioning and or have minimal language skills. It is a compicated career field. We do need more qualifieid interpreters, though!

My sister in law told me about a loan that she has that might work well for me. I started filling out the financial aid form, but I have to get the rest of my tax stuff back before I can finish it. If I can get that, then I can start on my classes for interpreter.

I know, my dear Watson, that you share my love of all that is bizarre and outside the conventions and humdrum routine of everyday life.

Thanks for the welcomes and encouragement. Right now, the only thing holding me back is not having the money to take classes. I did find a college that is local that does have a sign language interpreter program though.

Hi - Go for it!! Check at your college - you may find some sign classes already in place for your Special Edj/ECE program?? Sign Language interpreting is generally a two year (AA) program, and not every state has such a program, at least, not all of the colleges would offer it (usually only one or two colleges or community colleges would offer the SI certification program. And you'd always have the option of taking sign language as part of your ongoing CE needs (as a general rule of thumb, but each state is different!!).

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Hello all. I am a hearing person, but not too long ago I met my 2nd cousin for the first time. She is deaf. She came to visit us from Texas and we went out to lunch with her one day. Well, the rest of the family I was with didn't know how to communicate with her very well. She can read lips, but she has a hard time understanding sometimes. I had studied a little sign language as a child in church and I remembered my finger spelling. I had a great time chatting with her in signs and she taught me some. That one day opened up a whole new inspiration for me. I would really love to go get a degree in sign language interpretation one day. I've nearly gotten my degree in Early Childhood Education and I would love to put the 2 together to teach deaf children.
