Welcome! I saw that you got sime toutube links on the other thread.
When I do mine, I use crochet cotton and a small hook that easily pierces the towel.

Hi, my name is Deb, I'm 65 years young. I share my life & my apartment W/ a 4 year old Siamese named Me Ling. I just found this club last night but knew I had to join. I already have a question.

My mother wants me to make her some dish towels with the crochet towel toppers for Christmas. I did this about 40 years ago, when an older lady was teaching me to crochet. But she crocheted the topper into the towel 1/2 as she started, then I finished. I don't know how to do this, & my mother does not want it sewn on. Can someone PLEASE tell me how to crochet the topper into the towel.

Deb
Thanks in advance.

Diane, You could also try homeless shelters if you have one in your area. My daughter and I made a ton of scarfs a couple years ago and donated them to a local mission. They were so greatful to have them.

TryHarder Like my mom, you can check with local churches. She doesn't restrict it to one church. Her friends take pieces for their churches so her prayer shawls and baby afghans go to Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Baptist, and community churches! She has done lap robes for the VA hospital, baby blankets for a homeless shelter, and others.

Don't forget to make things for the church bazaar or fundraisers for charity! They love to sell or auction off crocheted baby sets!

I'm Terrie! I've crocheted for years, but never steady. My grandfather crocheted tablecloths, bedspreads, doilies, and other lovely things. Later, he switched to yarns and made sweaters using blocks. I wish I'd been more interested in it when he was alive, but I was young then.

I'm hoping being in the group will inspire me to play fewer online games and pick up the crochet hook more often! My mom is an inspiration. She has made over 500 prayer shawls and over 100 baby blankets for churches to give away. She makes scarves for people, too. Whenever I visit, she is crocheting something new! I don't know why I don't do more.

I love to do complicated stitches or elaborate color changes. I can't do the same stitch the way she does. I'm looking for a pattern to work on that will be a reward for losing 25 pounds. I am thinking about doing a sweater jacket for my new body.

I'm excited to find this group! Happy Crocheting and Happy Sparkling to Everyone!!! emoticon

Welcome Tryharder! There are many places that take donated things. You could check with your local Children's Hospital to avoid having to ship things. If that isn't an option, many churches have groups that make things for babies/children.

Hi, I live in West Virginia.
I have just started with SparkPeople. I think it and it's members amazing. I had been planning my meals and tracking on my own, but find this site so much easier and informative.
I taught myself to knit and crochet by making Barbie clothes for my sister. I eventually moved to crocheted afghans. I also like to cross stitch.
Is there an organization that could use donated articles? I want to make baby things but have no babies to give them to. I haven't worked consistently on my crocheting, but now that I am retired feel it's a good hobby to start up again.

Hello all. My name is Latice and I reside in the Metro Detroit area. I have been on SP for too long without any results and that's totally my fault. But I have a new attitude and I'm ready to start working towards a lifestyle change and not just dieting.

I haven't crocheted in about 26 yrs but I want to crochet a blanket for my 2 granddaughters (one here and one on the way). Hopefully, this is like riding a bike. I look forward to be an active member and getting assistance with some of these mile-a-minute patterns. Beautiful baby blankets but I need some practice.

Hi I am Jill (or Jilly) I have been using Spark since January but I have used it before. I am down about 13 lbs now but need to rev it back up.

I like to crochet and have dabble in it for a while. I am now working on a throw that I should have finished last year, lol. It is just half double crochet squares in different colors. I picked it because it was easy and easy to take along camping, wouldn't get dirty. Don't you know I cant find the pattern to put it together, been searching all over. I remember liking the way they were laid out. It was from Lion Brand free patterns but I have search the site as well as pintrest. Just need to be creative when I do finish all the squares I guess.

Look forward to learning and loosing with you all.

My name is Yvette. I've been crocheting for 30 years or more. A neighbor got me started on scarves but when my stepmom taught me how to read a pattern, I was off and running! It's is truely a passion although I enjoy other things also.
I've just been back on SP for 3 weeks after being gone for a couple of years. I did manage to lose 40 lbs year on my own but have done nothing since January but play with the same 5 lbs. Up and down. I decided that I needed some Spark spirit to help me out. In the past 3 weeks I have lost that 5 lbs. I have another 25 to go to reach my goal. I'm adding exercise this time and I'm really enjoying it.

My name is Brandi and I am a SAHM with 4 kids. I taught myself to crochet with YouTube videos and online tutorials. I'm still learning a lot of things but I am pleased with the progress I've made. I remember looking at a pattern and thinking "what in the world does it mean" and now I can spot an error :) It's the little things... I do find crochet theraputic as well and I use it when I'm in a bad mood to take my mind off of things. Crochet is a new found passion of mine but I'm worried I'll have to hang it up for a while or for good since I developed tennis elbow. I guess I took on too much at once. However, I still get the urge AND I have an obsession with buying new patterns. My collection is modest I think, but it frustrates my husband since I haven't actually completed any. I did work on a lot of WIP's which made me feel a LOT better. It's amazing how a small accomplishment can make a big difference.

All progress begins with telling yourself the TRUTH.

Hi! I'm Sarah Lee and I'm trying re-teach myself how to crochet, and eventually knit. I actually was taught when I was a kid, one grandma was more of a knitter and the other more into crochet so they each taught me their favorite. Then I became a teenager and that stuff was no longer kewl to do so I pretty much lost what I had. I'm not sure if it was my patience or just the books I was reading or what but in the past I seemed to struggle with re-teaching myself. More recently though I've had some success though I haven't really made anything yet. I've practiced a lot, but I always undo and re-use my practice pieces. They were more just random squares or rectangles but not really an end goal to them. Just practice.

I've also gained a bunch of weight due to health conditions, will power lacking, life/stress, etc. I've decided it's time to pursue health and lower weight again through exercise and healthy eating. So here I am! I just started using a Fitbit One today to track my steps and stairs climbed.

Hello my name is Tracy I am a full time paramedic and recently learned via YouTube how to crochet as it reminds me of my great gramma who used to crochet all the time. I have been looking at new patterns to both keep my hands busy and not feeding my face and also I love a new challenge...excited to be with other people that have similar interests and maybe even learn some new things to make.

Hi everyone! My name is Krystal. I learned to crochet last year by looking at the internet. I travel across the country with my husband , who is is a truck driver. As you can imagine, traveling all the time makes losing weight challenging. I lost about 30 pounds last year but with winter I have gained some of it back. Getting back on track now . Just finished a never ending granny square afghan for my grandson and now concentrating on making my step daughter's wedding bouquet. She is doing crochet flowers with brooches.

Hi all,

I am new to Sparkpeople and relatively new to crocheting. I was taught as a girl by my granddad and one of my prized possessions is a blanket he made from odds and ends of wool.

I have just picked up a hook again; I have made a baby blanket and two scarves for my nieces so far. As a Social Worker, I enjoy crocheting as a way to relieve stress and relax after a busy day!

Hello fellow crocheters~

I am Angela from Pennsylvania, a single mom of two children. My mom taught me to crochet when I was young and just recently picked it back up. I am on a tear...crocheting everything and and anything. I just love the internet with all the free patterns and YouTube for tutorials.

I retired a couple years ago and took up crocheting again after about 30 years absence from it. I have more patterns collected from the internet in a fat notebook and yarn than I'll ever use! I've made just small items like hats, scarves, headbands, and wristers. Boot toppers were added this winter's list. I LOVE wristers though and have at least a dozen in assorted colors with plans to make more. I live in Idaho in the mountains. Sometimes in winter I don't get out so much. Good wood stove, hot cocoa, and lots of yarn!

In the great shipyard of life it helps to be a little dinghy.

Hello - I'm Patty and I live in metro Detroit. I have two daughters. My youngest is expecting my first grandbaby in June. My sister taught me to knit when I was 11. I learned to crochet at 14. I can't read a pattern yet but will learn soon.

God grant me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Hi, I am Barb and live in Colorado. My mom taught me to crochet when I was 12, and a friend taught me to read patterns when I was 20. I just turned 50 on 11/12/13 so I have been crocheting for quite a while. I have been with spark people since June of 2012. Last year I lost 40 pounds, quit smoking, and gained 18 pounds back. Working on losing that plus an additional 30-40 pounds. Hope to get to know everyone.

Hello, all!

My name is Nicole, I'm 26 and I live in Idaho. I just joined this team because I love to crochet! My mom taught me when I was about 21 so I've been at it for about 5 years now. It's definitely more of a winter hobby for me because I like to be outside when it's nice and if any of you have been in Northern Idaho during the winter you know how much snow we get! There's something nice about curling up on the couch with coffee and crochet project to keep you warm. :)

Hi everyone,
My name is Terry and I live in Las Vegas NV with my husband after raising 3 daughters. I work in health care and believe me it is stressful. I am on vacation this week because I needed it so much.

Before my third daughter left the nest, I restarted my crochet habit from a young girl. I like to make blankets because I am an beginner. Regarding my weight loss, I am having a hard time staying on track. I hope the busyness of crocheting will divert my boredom eating.

My name is Cindy and I am in Virginia. I was so happy to find this team. I have not crocheted in a long time. I eat when I am stressed and emotional. I also find that I have anxiety attacks and I am a worry wort. That covers about everything doesnt it? I am restarting by reviewing my stitches and making some squares. I then have a blanket and some animals to make. I hope this will help relax me and take my mind off things.

Be at peace,
Cindy

Hello everyone! After a long absence from Spark People (and healthy eating! emoticon ) I'm trying to get back on track. Our pastor just started a new group at church for support in building healthy eating habits & losing weight. Do I ever need that! I decided this would also be a good time to reacquaint myself with Spark People so here I am. Hoping to build some good habits, lose some bad ones, & lose a little of myself (the fat part) in the process.

All things are possible with God.

Welcome to the team MJ... like you I needed something to do in the evenings, so I picked up crochet again after a few years absence. It has been a Godsend. Not to mention that my little grand-daughter now has a trove of crocheted items lol. I also love to garden! emoticon

Hi I'm MJ and I am going to start getting involved in knitting and crocheting. I used to do it years ago. Didn't stay with it had kids and no time. Then I went to work as a corporate executive for a company I was with for 25 years. I have since retired, and I love to garden and work outside. But I need something to do in the evenings, instead of eating out of boredom, so this came to mind and I am loving all the new patterns.

Hi everyone, new to the team. I love to crochet, also knit and cross stitch. I'm glad to have found this forum. To BLUEKITTYGP12: Thanks for the tip on using soda bottles to hold yarn, I've never heard that. Good idea! emoticon

Hi, I'm Jan and I live in Southern Oregon. I have been crocheting since I was 5 y/o. and I am still not an expert. I have had recent thumb reconstruction and am trying to restart crocheting which I gave up 4 years ago. I keep printing patterns from the internet. If I finish 10 patterns a year I will finish by the year 2050! P.S. I have 7 cats. So I keep my yarn in 2L soda bottles. emoticon

Hi Kelly and emoticon
Sorry no one responded to your posting before this.

If you're not already using your Nutrition and Fitness Trackers, I'd recommend it. They really keep you focused and aware of what you're eating and whether you're doing enough exercise. I've also started taking my measurements in order to have another measure of progress besides that blasted scale.
emoticon

A lot of us have been down this weight loss road before, sad to say. But this time, with the tools and support here on SP, I feel more committed and less likely to throw in the towel when things get tough. Taking it a day at a time helps. Reminding myself that progress isn't always a straight forward path helps, too.

Good luck to you and give us a holler if you need extra support. emoticon

Hi, I'm Kelly from northern California. I've been on SP for about a month now. I just found this team- yeah. I love to crochet large blanket/ bedspreads for family members. In between I like to make kitchen sets. (pot holders, dish clothes etc.) My goals are healthy eating and to somehow improve my exercising.

Hi from Pennsylvania. Like Jack Benny, I am 39 years old. Not. I am 46 years old, married to a great husband. I work mostly in front of a computer and most of the time I am sedentary/stuck to my chair. lol. I decided that I need to get up and go. I am trying to lose the weight I gained from being a traveled consultant for the past five years. I am determined to do at least 30 minutes of exercise whether it is walking or following Nicole's videos. Thank you for allowing me to join yyour group. Oh I forgot to mention that I like (or shall I say love) to crochet. I am currently working on bedspread for a good friend, using #10 thread. Look forward in chatting with the team members. Thanks for reading my (long) intro.

Hi all crocheters & Sparkers! I'm Terri from the Pittsburgh,PA area. I have to say I've been away for a while but am back to stay (I've got a lot of work to do on this body now!). I'm an avid crafter but crochet is my biggest passion - I like to call myself the Happy H@@ker for kicks!

My weight loss goal is to aim for the 5's & 0's on the scale. Five at a time will do me just fine. That's not too overwhelming. My motivation? Success!! Whether on the scale, a great walk/workout, eating right for the wole day, ANY success - they all lead to our long-term goal.

And what I'm crocheting right now is baby afghan sets that include the afghan, a tiny fleece blanket that I've crocheted a delicate scalloped border around, and baby booties to go with it. People are buying them from me so I'm sitting many times a day to get it all done.

Have a great SP day!

Why choose failure when success is an option?
If you want to change your body, you must first change your mind.

I'm new to the team so I thought I'd introduce myself. My name's Carry. I'm 27 years old and I live in western Ky. I'm married, no kids, but we do have three dogs. I've been teaching myself to crochet for a couple of years. I've managed to find a wealth of information on the internet. One of my favorite sources is youtube. I'm currently working on a wedding afghan, a plastic bag holder, and a stuffed lion (I tend to have a touch of ADD when it comes to my projects).

Hello, newbie here! I've been on sparkpeople for two years now, it's been invaluable to me. I love to crotchet, but my skill is very limited. I am hoping to get more confidence, so you guys are just what I need! I want to learn how to make baby hats as I have recently become a grandma and for some reason, my daughter thinks mom can make anything, after all crotcheting is simple once you know the stitiches, right? So here I am to stretch myself and maybe lose some weight while I'm crotcheting instead of eating! emoticon

Hello all, I just joined this group, and am pretty new to Sparkpeople. I love to crochet, I think about it all the time, when I am at work patterns and stitches are dancing in my head. I have crocheted for a pretty long time. (over ten years), but just now started branching out beyond the rectangular. I love to make flowers, and just made my first little across the body shoulder bag. I have four kids and work full time, so I barely have time to crochet, but when I do, I can't stop! I have a Pinterest page, and my crochet board is Just one more row....... :) Good luck to all on your crochet and weight loss endeavors.... emoticon

p.s. I posted this on another thread also, meant to put it here the first time. :)

Hello. I am Joan from Maine. Glad to be on this team and I will look around and check out your site. I am 51 and have 55 pounds to lose. Been carrying them around for all of my adult life...so looking forward to this new healthier lifestyle. I have been crocheting since I was a young girl and love to find pretty new things to try. Expecting my "1st" grandchild in November. Well that's all for now. emoticon

Hi to all. I posted under "I'm new" a few days ago, but realized I should probably do it here. :-) I'm 57 years old (sometimes feel like twice that) and I live near Philadelphia. I taught myself to crochet when I was 17 and I'm still going. I usually pull my hooks out in the fall and winter, since it's just too darned hot to have a pile of yarn on my lap during our humid summers. I'm hoping the community support will help me to make some goals and stick to them. - Carol

Hi I'm Marie. I've been a crocheter since I was 16 but haven't used my hook in ages. I have some brilliant patterns, but the instructions are in Italian, which I can't read so I try to follow the drawing plans as best I can. I have just finished doing a pelmet for a window in filet stitch and couldn't believe that I couldn't remember how to increase at the end of a row. Nonetheless, I will continue until I do remember and hope that my brain gets back into gear.

Hi! I.m Judy and I am an avid needlework person. I have been doing a lot of crochet lately because I have been making afgans for my daughter, grandchildren and great grands. I can do any thing that can be done with a needle and a few things you don't need a needle for. (Like macrame) My grandmother taught me to crochet on my fingers when I was 5. I graduated from that to embroidering pillowcases when I was 7. I had the best dressed dolls in the schoo! Need to lose 115 pounds before something more than my heart attack happens so here I am clutching my needles.

Hi everyone! My name is Mem. I'm 28, single from northwest Alabama. My ravelry username is mpainter4.
I've only been crocheting since October of 2011. I'm self-taught with the internet and a book. I've learned to make mittens, scarves, potholders, tablerunners, hats and a little ball for my dog to play with. I'm currently working on a granny square blanket and I'm about halfway finished, maybe a little more.
I've only been on sparkpeople.com since Feb. 12th. I started at 205 lbs and I'm currently at 197 lbs. Hoping to hit -10 lbs by Monday, which is my "official" weigh-in.

Hi everyone,

I'm Rebecca. I"m 35, a teacher and a crocheter. My username on Ravelry is Kaboosie.

I've been crocheting for nearly over 25 years and have started taking on some more ambitious projects (They're on Ravelry...).

I love crocheting - making something from a ball of yarn is amazing. I am trying to convince a few of my students to learn so the art form (yes... it's an art form) alive.

I do have a confession, however... I CANNOT knit a stitch. Knitting just doesn't make any sense in my poor hook-trained brain. My knitting takes hours and hours and gets tighter and tighter. It's woeful.

I'm looking to lose 40kgs over the next 12months. Sick of being tired all the time. Also, there's this really cute winter coat I want to crochet... in a size 14. Just saying haha!

Hello,
My name is Brenda and I'm from Colorado. I am 53 yrs old and single. I work in the field of Education.

I both knit and crochet, and sometimes I also combine the two - I learned to crochet from my grandmother at age 10. Right now my project is an afghan that uses the double treble stitch to form shells - slow going but very pretty!

I am also brendT58 on ravelry.com.
