Welcome Andy. I'm glad to hear you're trying to go low sodium early. That's a wise decision. A word of caution, read labels when buying food. Things you wouldn't think are high in sodium are really high. If you're not sure, the Nutrition Data online has an area you can put just about any food and it will give you the nutritional breakdown. Hi Andy, yes, pickles are high, good for you for checking the nutrition label. I do find that when I'm craving a sweet, a small pickle (one or two slices) will help curb the cravings and don't do too much to the overall sodium intake.
You're doing the right thing by limiting that sodium intake now, while you're young. Do you eat at the school cafeteria? That makes things difficult, mass produced foods generally contain a lot of salt. Try brown-bagging it, and eat a lot of things that grow naturally, eg fruits and veggies. You want to get that B/P under control before it does damage to your heart, blood vessels etc. And if you can control it without medication you're better off, all meds have adverse effects down the road. Unfortunately I didn't do what I preach and am on 3 B/P meds. I've lost 130 lbs but still need the meds. I guess I'm stuck with them for life, in more ways than one.
God bless your efforts to get healthier.
