Sorry about your hubby :(( Hope he makes a full recovery..
You really don't need a fad diet to lose weight. Infact, eliminating certain food groups is just plain bad for you health. Spark People had meal plans you can follow or make your own up. But it really is just all about staying in your calorie range and that involves eating more fruits and veggies as they are so low cal and no fat. Eating lean meats, or lentils and cottage cheese, simply watching the portion siz of what ever you eat. One serving of most things is considered a 1/2 cup and you just have to measure it once to get the idea of how it fits in your bowl, etc. I lost my weight eating regular food, but weighing and measuring everything and tracking it to see that I stayed in my range. That makes a huge difference and was quite the eye opener how bad my portions really were. Also eating a well balanced meal is essential so you don't feel hungry later on.
You will find tons of helpful articles about every facet of losing weight. Its rather overwhelming at first, but once you get into it you will see how helpful it all really is.
All the best with your goal!
