Walking has been the best for me. I was walking about 4 X week with a friend most of the year, and the Walk Away the Pounds videos are great for me. I've also done the SP bootcamp and such challenges for a nice fast start, where you make great progress and stay motivated for a month at a time. SP does have some great videos!

Well, my weight loss has been pretty slow.. I lose some and then lose motivation for months and then start back up. :-) I'm in a weight loss competition now, a bunch of ladies I know threw $15 each into the pot and whoever loses the most gets the $150! I've mostly been drinking water (15 cups per day) and increasing my protein so I'm not craving carbs. I don't get a lot of exercise with my kids, but we usually get a couple of long walks in each week. What type of exercise do you like best?

Hi Jen! Nice to meet you! Looks like you're doing great losing!! So what have you been doing to lose so far?

I've gained my weight back, so doing it again--hopefully for the last time. Back on getting my water, and I'm eating salads for lunch most days this time. Just need to get my exercise back in there!

Hi Tripixie!

I have 2 that have graduated from homeschool, and I have a 7th grade dd still at home.
I did daycare when my oldest two were small. Unfortunately, my younger ds thought the school day should end when the bus dropped off his buddy at noontime. lol (I was down to just one.)

Looking forward to running this journey with you!

Hi I'm Kathy. I am not new to Sparkpeople although this is a new account for a fresh start. Tomorrow ends my first week of tracking on Sparkpeople.
This is my first year of homeschooling. I have a 6 yr old in 1st grade and an 8 yr old in 3rd grade. I have wanted to homeschool since the oldest was in 1st grade and finally got started.

Good to see you, ZooRho! I've had a really rough last 4 months myself, so am ready to get focused now. I was without an oven the last 6 weeks and already out of the cooking habit, so I'm ready to cook and eat veggies now! And I'm been following threads, blogs, and such on healthier eating, so that's got me headed in the right direction at the right time. lol

I have 2 ds also. The oldest is working with his dad's heating company and the second should be graduating next month. Then I have a dd, 12, that I'll be able to focus on. Yeah!! Can't wait; she's the one who loves arts and crafts, which have been sorely missing from my life. :)

I'm new to this team. I've been on Spark for a while but I joined it to help track my son's special diet needs a couple of years ago. He is better now and i don't track his stuff now.

I did start seriously last Feb to lose weight but I really had to go hard in the fall to loose anything. I've had a few rough months but am now determined to drop this last little bit.

I have 2 boys always hsed. My oldest is now on his own, working a man's job and finishing college. My youngest is a sophomore in High school.

Glad you've joined us, Hsflymom! I'm in the same boat, needing to take off 25 for the second time grrrr, and time is running out for graduation pics and summer clothes for me. It's a lot more fun running with some friends--I know! emoticon

Lily/Tracey is going to lead the Bible study Made to Crave in June, since that worked best for everyone. That will probably be perfect for you, too!

Hi folks,

Not really new around here, but it has been a long, long time since I was on SP regularly. I did WW for over a year. I am successful when I work the program, but became discouraged. I had lost 35 lbs., and have gained all but 13 back. I recently had a mini-meltdown when I became overwhelmed by all the info on what is and is not healthy to eat. I am going to create a blog here and will dive into it there, but I am beginning to see the formation for myself. This is a spiritual journey for me as well, as I think God is working on me by using my weight issues.

Anyway, I am back and ready to keep track. I LOVE the idea of working as a team,so I am hoping to see lots of encouragement and info coming from others who are likeminded! Hoping to get lots of streaks going here as well!

Hi, everyone!
I'm not new, I'm old (in oh, so many ways), but I am back. I lost 50lbs with SparkPeople a while back, but have gained back about 15lbs off & on. I've used Weight Watchers for the past 2 years, but my body is ready for a change. Looks like the group is fairly active & I look forward to getting to know everyone again! :)

Hi Everyone! I am a happily married 31 year old mother of two. I have a son who is 6 and my daughter is 4. My family and friends mean everything to me and I would like to be with them for a while. I want to lose weight, so I can be active with my kids how I used to be, be around to meet my grandchildren, and feel good about myself again. I also want my children to learn how to live healthy lifestyles, so they can live long, healthy, happy lives.

As far as homeschooling, this is our first year in the traditional sense. I am happy to say that it is going well. I was really scared about it in the beginning since I had never known anyone who homeschooled and was completely clueless as to how to go about it. Anyway since then we have settled in to a nice rhythm and I feel that this is a perfect time to start incorporating some of my needs into our routine. I figure my health is the perfect place to start. With that said I look forward to joining everyone on this journey toward a good health.

Welcome, Karen! I'm down to 2 students this year: 17 and 11. My oldest son (20) lives at home yet and works for his dad. I know when I've taken the time to exercise regularly and eat well, that it made a huge difference in my energy levels! And my bloodwork was much better, too. I know you can do this! We'd love to encourage and cheer you on. :)
Feel free to jump in any threads or start another if we can help you out!

Thanks for the welcome, Jenny! Our anniversary is the 24th.

You are so right about not being able to take care of others if we do not take care of ourselves. I have had extreme fatigue that has crept up over the last two years. I'm not sure if it is entirely due to the extra weight I've added or my sedentary lifestyle. Nothing is showing up in my blood work. I'm going to see if being more active and shedding some weight helps. I'm not worth much to my family if I'm so exhausted that I'm napping in my recliner every afternoon.

Welcome Karen!! It's so nice to have you back again. I know it's hard to put yourself first as a mom especially when homeschooling. But after years of taking care of everyone else and ignoring my own health, I finally realized that I couldn't take care of them very well if my own health continued to decline. Last summer, I made the commitment to improve my health and I'm getting there! I know you can do this too! What a lovely 25th anniversary gift that will be for you and for your family! When is your anniversary? I was married in October too.

I probably introduced myself 2 years ago when I first joined SparkPeople, but I've been busy with life and not hanging out here at all. So here I am back again!

My name is Karen, and I have 4 children. One is grown and gone, and I have 3 left at home: 16, 14 and 12. We are finishing up our 9th year of homeschooling.

Over the years, I've been so busy with homeschooling and being a mom, that I've really let my weight and health go. I've finally decided that it is time to do something about it, and my goal is to be fit and healthy by my 25th anniversary (this October). I don't have a specific weight in mind. A 35-45 lb loss would probably be good. My main goal is to have more energy, be healthy, and be able to tie my shoes and breathe at the same time.

~*~Karen~*~

Hi Rainyday! Glad you've joined us. Just take baby steps, and you'll be on your way. Maybe start with adding your water or eating 3 fruits or veggies a day? The site can be overwhelming, but there's lots of great info and wonderful tools to help you. Just ask if you have a specific question. We'd love to help and encourage you. :)

Hi Tina! Sorry we've overlooked this thread. Didn't mean to not notice you! emoticon Busy time of year, I guess. Welcome! The best way to join in is to post on several threads. We are a friendly bunch!

Anyway, to your question... I know it was easy to find back when I joined, but I'm not finding the place right now. I'll keep looking. I did find this article to help figure out how many calories you should take in:

It has been almost a year since I first introduced myself here.I couldn't remember my sign in info so here I am under a different username.
I am a mom of 4.My 19yo is out of the house working and trying to enlist in the service,my 14yo attends ps(much to her disappointment),I homeschool our 10yo(getting ready to use Calvert) and our 2yo(casual and fun).
I have decided 2012 is my year to get healthy and stay healthy.I need to lose 80 lbs.I am sick of looking at myself and my body aches.I have pain in my knee when climbing stairs. Not fun! I also don't want to spend the money on new clothes so I try to find things at the thrift store.I am not having much luck.I am tired of looking frumpy and dumpy.
I need to focus on getting myself healthy.I have put it off for way too long.
Instead of spending money on a bunch of exercise dvd's, I am trying them out from the library. Two I have on hold are Bob Harper's weight loss transformation and Denise Austin's shape up and shed the pounds.I hope one of these will be to my liking .I have also begun saving recipes here .There are really lots of good sounding recipes!
Does anyone know how I can figure out how many calories I need per day? Thanks!
I hope I can stay active here.:)I will definitely need the encouragement in both weight loss and homeschooling.

~Tina

Hello all! I'm new, my name is Valerie and I live in Mi with my 2 kids, 1 foster kid, and husband... just celebrated our 14th anniversary yesterday :) This is my 2nd year homeschooling (fost child has to stay in public school) and it definately has it's ups and downs! I thought I knew what I was getting into because I was homeschooled off and on as a child. Well, it's totally different being the parent! Overall, I really enjoy it and am just taking it one step at a time.

I was looking at the other homeschool boards here and didn't see any that were very active till I checked into this one. So I think it's really the place for me! I enjoy chatting and touching bases with my forum friends several times a day. I saw the challenge threads too... very fun!

I used Spark a few years ago and lost 30 lbs! It has slowly creeped back on, ever since my gym closed :( I love a lot of my drive and joy because I was used to my workout routine and it just wasn't the same afterwards. KWIM? I also suffer from some depression and we've had a lot of family changes and I let my health and well-being slip to the bottom of the priority list.

I'm doing Atkins right now and having some great success. I started to let things go a couple weeks into it and realized, "I'm doing it again!" So I pulled out my Beck Diet Solution book (which was a major tool when I lost my 30) and am getting back on track before I put any weight on that I've lost (about 10 lbs.)

Hope to get to know everyone better!

emoticon Ann! It's wonderful to have you on board! Your story is one most of can relate to and I know that this team and just SparkPeople alone can help you reach that goal. Congrats on the upcoming number 6! I'm sure that you're excited. Keep us posted on how things are going and I know I look forward to seeing your journey proceed.

As I'm schooling six of my seven this year and I sew from home, I'm not on near as often as I would like, but I do try to check in often. Tina is away for the week and will be returning soon. Please join any of the threads to jump in!

Hi Everyone! I am new to the group and thought I'd take a minute to introduce myself.

My name is Ann, I'm 33 years old, and a stay-at-home-homeschooling mom. We have 5 children (soon to be 6) and my husband has 2 adult children. Our children at home are ages 15, 13, 9, 7, 2 and baby number 6 is scheduled to be delivered via c-section in early November. We have homeschooled from the very beginning, which means we are beginning our 11th year!!! That is just crazy...it doesn't feel like it has been that long!

I am on Sparkpeople to try and lose all this extra weight once and for all. The dieting cycle is a vicious one and I for one am tired of it. It is about changing my lifestyle now, no more "secret formulas" or "special diets".only to lose 30 pounds and then gain back 35. I want to learn how to regularly make healthy food choices and make working out a normal part of my life.

I look forward to being a part of this group and not only receiving motivation and encouragement for weight loss, but also as a homeschooling mom! :)

Hi there all. I'm new to this group but not new to Sparkpeople. I have successfully homeschooled and graduated two of my kids and still have the younger two homeschooling. They are in 7th and 10th grades. My son did sports on homeschool teams but the daughters are not interested. Our main focus is music - classical. We have flute, piano, violin, cello and viola, as well as vocal studies. They take private lessons and are part of an orchestra and choir.

This year we are trying out a homeschool "academy" type of thing, where they have a full day of classes one day a week, with a group and teachers. They then work on their assignments through the week. It has been extremely helpful in keeping us moving along and not dragging into the summer because we weren't finished yet. The deadlines, assignments, tests, etc. are great for these two learners, but maybe wouldn't be the best for every child.

We have a mish-mash of curricula and have tried a lot of different things over the years. So, that's a little about us. Looking forward to getting to know a few people and encouraging others through their homeschool journies.

Wonderful to have you on board!!!!!

I hope we can help and encourage you in both homeschooling and weightloss. We have a great team that really help motivate and lift you up.

Because of our families recent move, I have the opportunity to use K-12, would you mind telling what your thoughts are? I have six I'll be homeschooling, five would be using this, and one will be using Virtual Online Learning Academy which allow him to play public school sports while being taught at home (this is an answer to prayer!).

Check out the different threads and join right in!

Welcome again and have a great day!

Hello everyone!

I am so glad to find this group.I am needing encouragement in both the weight loss/fitness and homeschool areas so what a blessing it is to find this.
I am a hs mom of 4~ 18 yo in college,13yo and 9yo homeschooled and 1yo in diapers. We are using K12 to finish out this year but will probably switch back to Sonlight for 9yo and use SOS for 13yo.
I will be the big 4-0 this year so my plan is to lose 2 sizes by my birthday.Besides following SP's nutrition plan, I am T-Tapping,too and plan to add some of the exercises shown on SP.
Everytime I want to drink pop I am going to replace it with a bottle of water . I also want to reduce my sugar consumption, so I am going to be limiting my chocolate to just 4 small pieces a day.

Blessings!

Roxanne,

I know I stop by your Spark page, but didn't offically welcome you to the team via this thread. Oops, sorry! So, now I'm officially saying:

It's great to have you with us. Loved reading your testimony. Those first few years always seem to be the toughest (at least I can attest to that). I totally enjoy doing it, too. Although it does get a little hectic at times with six different ones going at once. At least once a day I have to remind them I'm only one person. :)

Welcome once again and it's truly wonderful to have you with us!!

Hello, I'm Roxanne. I have 2 boys (10th and 6th grades). We've been homeschooling for 7 years now. My whole family loves it. In the beginning, I felt called to do it yet doubted myself constantly. After 2 years of doubting and questioning God daily, I asked forgiveness and realized that if this is what He wanted us to do then I should "get over it" and wholeheartedly agree that homeschool was right for us until the Good Lord told us differently. I must say there was an instant change in my attitude and the way the boys handled school.
Now, we've enjoyed the past 5 years learning and growing together as a family. We use an assortment of curriculums and tools. Most importantly, we all try to remember that "Life is our best curriculum". There is something to learn everyday in all the things that we do.
I've been enjoying the Spark tools for about 5 weeks now and decided it was time to look for a homeschool team.

~Roxanne

Just realized I didn't introduce myself. I'm a stay at home Mom of a Girl 15 and a Boy 13. We have been homeschooling for 4 years now. They are both in the 7th grade. This has been our worst year yet. We had a rough start and are behind. I feel behind in everything around here. But I am hopeful to get it all caught up. I need some advice on how to get school caught up if you have any that would be great.

Some of you have already been visiting my page. Thank you. I do need to learn to relax. I can be too up tight. I'm trying to learn.

I see what you mean. I have one in 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th. But with the ABeka online, it's been pretty flexible for the older ones so far. We'll see what next year brings. :)

Praying his thumb has healed nicely and requires very little therapy!

Hi again! We see the doctor again this morning for a new x-ray and (most likely) recasting for another two weeks. I should get try to get up the courage to find out whether/how much physical therapy is expected when the cast comes off. If it's only another two weeks as expected it shouldn't require as much therapy as his ankle did after 9 weeks weeks of casting. My school schedule was completely blown up by the therapy last spring and with one in high school now, I dread the prospect of going there again.

With the sport constraints on our school time, I'm not finding much of that promised flexibility in homeschooling. Part of that is just having 8th and 9th graders. I find six high school credits far more time consuming and less easily compressed than 3rd and 5th grades are. It's just not as repetitive and plodding as elementary curricula seem to be. My older two end up schooling weekends to stay on schedule when there are weekday interruptions.
