The recipe was waaaaay down this thread, so I'll copy and repost it here for you. I make this often, it's easy and delicious.

It's out of Vegan Vittles by Jo Stepaniak. You take 1/2 cup of nutritional yeast and 1/2 cup of flour (I used whole wheat). Place them in a small pan and toast them over medium heat, stirring constantly. Stir in 1-1/2 cups of veggie broth, 2 Tablespoons of soy sauce and 2 teaspoons of olive oil (she says the oil is optional). Cook and stir until it's nice and thick and bubbly. Mix in onion powder and salt, and you're done! I served it over pasta, but you could put it on potatoes, seitan, veggies, just about anything.

I just figured the large ones that got crushed or the bottom of the container got moved over to the other one.

I am going to try to get to a Raw & Vegan cooking class this month. I hope I make it.

I think they are interchangeable. I always get the large flake, because that's what Isa recommends (she's the author of Vegan with a Vengeance).

At my Whole Foods Market they have a couple of different size flakes. Is one size better than the other or do they have different uses?

Thanks, we don't have a lot of health food stores around here. There's one about 3o minutes away, but I don't get there often. Guess I'll have to try to get there.

It is not stored with the regular yeast. Where I buy it, it's stored with the spices and dried fruits. I get mine at a health food store, it might be difficult to find mainstream.

I looked for it at Kroger's -- in the 'health food' section and with the regular yeasts -- no luck.

It keeps very well. I buy it in bulk, store most in the freezer but keep a bag in the cupboard. I don't know if it's necessary to keep it in the freezer, but I figure it can't hurt.

There are a bunch of gravy/sauce mixes that use nutritional yeast. Do a web search or check into some vegan cookbooks. It can also be sprinkled on popcorn, cooked veggies, rice, whatever you can think of. I make a salt-free seasoning mix with it that is mostly nutritional yeast along with chili powder, cumin, oregano, etc. that I use in place of salt.

I saw it the other day in the bulk bins at my Whole Foods store. I didn't buy any because I am not sure how it keeps and more than a couple of ways to use it. Any more suggestions for nutritional yeast? I can always use more B's in my diet.

Nice recipe, I can't wait to try this! Here is some more Info kids! ( I hang with naturopaths that use nutritional I.V therapy to detox drug and alcohol patients to help them recover...so I learn lots of amazing stuff) This is about B vitamins...Important stuff*** when you are depressed, we tend to eat "comfort foods" things that are carby: mashed taters, mac and cheese pasta...these things actually absorb or use up your vitamin B supply lowering your mood just a bit more...how's that for a vicious cycle we are not typically
aware of! So eat your nutritional yeast!

You will find it on the shelves. It's a yellow flakey powder. I usually find it in plastic bags.

Last night I made a wonderfull, quick gravy with it. It's called Golden Gravy, and it's out of Vegan Vittles by Jo Stepianak.

Hi All,
LYBBE is correct in saying that nutritional yeast tastes better, but they are basically the same. See:

http://network.bestfriends.org/vegeat/ne
ws/2288.html

I have never tried nutritional yeast, and now I am intrigued. I guess that they both can be put on the coats of pets but can cause bloating in them if ingested directly. Anyway, it's the B Vitamins that do the work.

Good discussion. It made me do some research.

Welcome Kelly. I'm new, too. It is a great team.

Years ago, in the "hippy days", I used nutritional yeast, which I think was also called brewers yeast??
Is it the same thing?

It is full of B vitamins, as Valerie said, and keeps the mosquitoes from biting you if you eat it on a regular basis.

Also, if you have a pet that gets fleas, if the food they eat has nutritional yeast in it, they will not get fleas. It is a common ingredient in pet foods. If they tend to get fleas, you can rub it on their coats and the fleas will not land on them.

I'm sure you can find it in the mainstream groceries as well as health food stores. It looks like flakes and usually comes in jars. It is old school nutrition, It goes back to the day of wheat nuts and wheat germ! very high in Bs and iron too (this is all off the top of my head)

Hey Welcome Here!!!!
The question on the nutritional yeast...yes! It tastes cheesy and garlicy and is super high in B vitamens! If you have access to a good health food store any of the boxed Vegan Mac and Cheese varieties uses nutritional yeast to flavor their products. This is the easiest way to try it. also look on the package for the .com the website for any given product usually has coupons and recipes.

I have read and loved a book called, "The Good Food Book" and it offers lots of great ideas on better eating and has some specific info on whole grains. The good news, is the book is available in it's entiriety online. Incidentally, it was written by a his/her doctor team - the male is my former doctor.

But the book is available free online and I think you will like it. Also, explore the rest of his Web site too. There are many great health, fitness, and nutrition tips there, along with some wonderful recipes.

There is a weekly newsletter too. But meanwhile, here is the online book. When I first read it, I had the hard copy. I am not sure which I like better -

Hi and welcome. I find that the people in my household eat what I prepare. They have been big lovers of meat and meat products. But because of me, they have been changing their ways. Looks like the same is going on in your house too.

Good luck with your health goals and congratulations on your new health numbers. That has been my motivation for maintaining a veggie lifestyle too. Better cholesterol, BP, and triglycerides.

Don't know that book though, but I'll look it up. Sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome. I'm new to this page too. I've heard of nutritional yeast. I think it's used like parmesan cheese, but I've never used it. If you do, let me know what it's like. It's different that the yeast used in bread.

Hi

My name is Kelly I am new to your team. I have recently read a book called Food for Life and it has changed my thinking and eating. I recently had my cholesterol checked and it went from 220 to 166. My triglycerides also went down. Amazing! I am still trying to navigate around here and am anxious to read all of the posts and get to know all of you.

My husband and my 7 year old son have been eating everything I have been cooking for the most part with no complaints. However, my 2 year old daughter loves the veggies, soymilk but still likes her snacks so I am slowly changing over to things that are made vegan.

Does anyone know of a vegan parmesan cheese????

Looking forward to knowing you.
