Welcome, Sherry! I haven't read that book, either, but glancing quickly at the reviews on Amazon, it looks like it's probably in line with much of what Dr. McDougall and Dr. Fuhrmann say. I look forward to reading more about your progress!

Hi,I'm new to SparkPeople, started on 2/10/08.I am currently doing a program by Dr. Gillian McKeith. The book is called "You Are What You Eat".She also has a show on BBC America by the same title. When I started,I was 376 lbs. and had a sinus problem that nothing would cure for 4 1/2 months. After being on this lifestyle change, and that's what it is,for four days, the sinus problem just disappeared.I've been on for 3 1/2 weeks and lost 16 lbs.but most of all I feel great!Has anyone heard of this book?I think it is great. Thanks, Sherry

Omnivore's Dilemma was one of those books that I just couldn't stop talking about. It's absolutely fascinating.
I really liked In Defense of Food, as well. He has all these great rules for eating, for example, Don't buy your food at the same place you buy your gas. And Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.
Once or twice isn't much. I may go back to that myself, we'll see - mostly I'm thinking about allowing eggs occasionally for ease in baking. I've just started OmDil, so I'm only about 20 pages in.

CAFO stands for "Confined Animal Feeding Operation." It's the industry acronym for those huge awful feedlot operations that Pollan talks about in Omnivore's Dilemma.
I know the author of China Study strongly recommends a vegan diet. I'd like to be there, but at this point in my life, I'm not. I eat animal products once or twice a week
I can get local free-range eggs, I currently get raw milk locally for my kids, and can get local grass-fed beef, but after all I've been reading and especially after watching "McDougall's Medicine" on DVD, I'm just not sure how much I want to eat those things. I guess we'll see if the novelty of not eating them wears off! :)
Thanks, Deeann - I hope you are doing well!

I would feel a lot better about eating occasional animal products if I was able to get meat that wasn't from a CAFO. I can get local free-range eggs, and I feel pretty good about eating those once in a while.
Hi again Anne, You have a great plan -- good luck with it.

Thanks, Debbie. I just started 'Omnivore's Dilemma' and also recently bought his newest book.
I'm strictly vegan this month just to be able to evaluate how I feel, physically and emotionally, and I'll decide after that if I want to allow animal products occasionally.
Glad to find others on this journey!

Welcome!
China Study also motivated me to change my eating habits. I'm not vegan, but I'm close to it. Always a work in progress.
I recently read "If It's Not Food, Don't Eat It." That also made a very big impression on me. Oh, and of course, every word Michael Pollan has ever written!
I'm Anne from Virginia. I've been interested in changing my eating for a while now and have been working toward that, starting with milling my own grain and making homemade bread back in February of last year. After attending a couple of healthy eating/whole food seminars here (by a local friend, nothing really "official"), reading a lot of stuff including The China Study, McDougall, and Furhman, I'm ready to give it a shot.
My husband and I committed to going vegan at least for the month of February - he actually did last fall for a few months, then over the holidays drifted away from that. So far I feel great! I want to learn more about vegan eating and nutrition, find new recipes, and most of all be willing to try new things - I'm a picky eater so it's kind of hard.
Anyway, hopefully I can meet others here who are on this same journey.
