Hello..I am Lama..from Alexandria...joined sparkpeople a while ago but didn't commit...now i am trying to get back on track...lots of weight to lose...but hopefully will get there...my entire family is thin...so i am the odd one out and i don't like talking to them because they just cant imagine what i am going through...noticed the team isn't as active as most teams are...hope we can change that...i can really use the support...

i thought about what you said , i think you're right, i shouldn't hate my body
i guess i hated it cuz people around couldn't simply accepted it , so i did too .
but after your sayings , not anymore
i know it's gonna be a very long journey , i mean i was just exhausted from mentally being on diet without anything technically , but i assume that's the hardest part , just to break the shell on the mind.

actually i'd appreciate it if you can advice me more about tracking my food
since we're from the same country, most of food listed in the track food part ain't found easy,specially in a small town
any advice 4 me about that ?

Hello Bassant, and welcome on board...
At first you're welcomed to join and be part of our team, we here give you info, motivation, support and reason to lose weight.... so don't feel shied to ask questions or seek for support...all diet about is info, the more info you gain, the more better choices you make......Cottage cheese or cheddar...skimmed vs full fat, this or that...etc

To tell you, we all almost started to lose real weight and restore the good shape after joining this team, we all gained experience from asking and seeking, we always found the friend to lend you a hand when you need it, it's almost like group therapy
a lot of members met on occasions and became really good friends.....

As for hating your body, that's the first step you should change permanently, love your body....
we take care of things we love, if you hate your body then you'll keep hurting it, accept yourself as you are and seek to improve it...
like you I've never been slim my whole life except until I loved my body and started to treat it right..

So break that rule, love your body, take photos of yourself, look at the mirror and confront yourself for the last time before you change it,love that person in front of you, make a real profile and don't be ashamed to post your personal and family photos...

To be honest, losing weight is going to be a long journey, it took me 2 years to reach where I am, it'll be hard at first, but it'll get easier and easier till you reach the point where you say: oh 10 kgs, that's easy, I can make that.....

just join us and be disciplined to change, be committed to make extra effort, to take an extra mile, to fall and re-try and trust me, you'll see a whole new person....She's the same old nice lady, but with a new look

I'm bassant from Egypt , i live in Ismailia. I'm 25 yrs ols , i'm married.And i'm working in Suez Canal Authority.

I don't think i've been ever slim or even accepting and loving my body, always hated it, & what made it worst i couldn't do anything about it.
i guess my problem is that i do love food , when i'm hungry , it's not that i'm gonna eat any food , nooooooo no no no , that's not me , i'd LOVE to eat the tasty food , the fast food ... the unhealthy food. and then i blame myself 4 every bite . i get to eat when i'm nervous & bored !!!!
and of course convincing myself that i'm on diet but actually i've been cheating whenever i can. it's so frustrating to feel that all ur life u're on diet but actually u're not on a real diet , as if decieving myself.
but i'm here right now so .......... let's try but this time for real

i hope i can find alot of friends with the same goal (losing wieght) we might find motivation and support in our friendship

Yeah, in egypt there are a lot of overweight people, while true clinical obesity isn't that common.
being overweight is due to lack of physical activity, in egypt sport is the last thing on mind...

I know i'm writing this and I know that I'm late to write it, but I want to tell you a story,

when I started my diet I used to have night cravings, drums banging in my stomach telling me to eat, so I end up eating anything from everything, wherever there is in the fridge I eat, sometimes in that stupid sequence, meat, candy, rice, MESH BALADY, jam, Milk.......weird ha
after this frenzy I come back to mind and ask myself, what have I done, I'm wasting all my efforts, I'm stupid stupid stupid, so next day I cut a promise to eat half of my food to COUNTERACT, I make it through the morning, a little hungry after lunch , at night guess what...meat, candy, rice, MESH BALADY, jam, Milk...and so on

So what I'm saying is, don't try to cut more to make up for the binges you had, just return to normal.
our bodies aren't cars, not every meal is fully digested, not every extra food is gonna stick by a magnet to your hips, so don't beat yourself up...

the most important in diet is the general pattern, so don't let yourself binge every day, but if you binge one day, what's the problem, sometimes I consider binges as a part of a diet, they make you able to continue your diet, most of newbies to dieting start like fire, no mistakes, not a single extra calorie, mouth is shut with glue, but after 1 month or more they start feeling bored, progress isn't as supposed to be, so the end the diet happily satisfied with what they reached, but never return to normal, they always overeat...

So I recommend that you have a cheating meal, I call it a ( HAPPY MEAL ) once a week, one meal saves you a whole weak, eat what you desire ( DESIRE ) in reasonable portions, preferably in the morning or at lunch ( not at night) so that your body is active with a higher metabolism, and at night you're back to healthy food...

Abu Shaara is the BEST place to eat in all the world! My husband and I found a restaurant owned by a Turkish family here in Michigan that "almost" was as good...but nothing is quite as good as Abu Shaara.

Yep, howowshi is like meatloaf...only when I had it, it was stuffed inside bread. In the States, we don't put our meatloaf inside bread. Instead we put mounds of mashed potatoes beside it and then cover the whole thing with gravy.

We had friends over for dinner quite often when I was in Cairo and they always wanted me to cook American food. One food I cooked that all our friends said they had never seen was mashed potatoes and gravy. Never do this, Mark. Mashed potatoes and gravy are soooo bad for you. You boil potatoes without the skin until they are soft, put them in a mixing bowl with cream and lots of butter and salt, and mix them up until they are smooth. Then, you take the fat from whatever meat you have cooked, add a little water and more salt, and thicken it with flour or corn starch. Then, you pour that thickened fat over your meat and potatoes. Tastes wonderful, but the fat alone will keep you for a week.

Last night, I made the mistake of cooking au gratin potatoes for supper. These are sliced potatoes baked together with cheese sauce. I always put sausage in mine when I bake them. Then, I made the double mistake of not using my measuring cup. The correct thing to do would be to give myself half a cup of potatoes, two ounces of the sausage, and a cup of green beans. Instead, I think I ended up with a full cup of potatoes and about 4 ounces of sausage...and only half a cup of green beans. An hour later, the cravings started. emoticon

I'm feeling it today -- the uncomfortable feeling that comes with eating too much all at once. Those bacteria in the intestines aren't able to digest that much food all at one time, and we know the resulting consequence. Needless to say, I'll be wearing loose clothes today. emoticon

I won't beat myself up for it. It was a mistake and one that I will learn from. Next time I am tempted to eat potatoes (one of my weakness foods), I will measure carefully so that I have a taste of the yummy stuff then "fill" up with vegetables.

I haven't watched "Super-Size Me" but I have heard a lot about it. Maybe after I finish with my math class today, I will look it up and see what I can find. I have to tell you, I am amazed to see obese people in Egypt. While I lived in Cairo, I saw only one truly obese Egyptian. (Overweight -- common; Obese -- not so common) That truly obese Egyptian was walking into....McDonald's. emoticon

I'm off to math class, and then we'll see what I can do to counteract what I did yesterday.

Hahahaha, I laughed alot when I read that last comment.
McDonald's is the main reason why 60% of the united states suffer from obesity.
I watched a documentary called SuperSize Me, a challenge by a man to eat 3 meals daily from McDonald's for a month, as he monitors his vitals and blood tests and liver, renal functions.
After that month ..........well u watch it and tell me what you think, the irony is that today I cheated on my diet by drinking Milkshake from McDonald's....

As for fool, Falafel ( taamya as pronounced here in alex ) these are our landmark, their smell inhabit your nose and tickle your nasal mucosa, I love them but eat just one taamya at meal ( it's a little larger )
As for Howowshi, I thought it's similar to meatloaf, isn't it ?????

and yes, although it's weird but Egyptians eat bread with almost everything, even the Ice cream ( kiddin')

I want to tell you that as a housewife, you rule what enters your family's mouths, you're the Queen, don't let them affect your choices to make healthy food, because even if they're not tasteful as fat food, but with each healthy meal you serve them more years added to their lives, so don't feel pity for that and don't weaken, healthy choices aren't punishment...

Welcome Ruth! I understand about the homesickness. I gained 40 pounds while I was living in Cairo, and a lot of it was from comfort eating. DH used to take me to McDonald's when I got homesick. (I'm from Michigan.) Of course, it didn't help that all DH's friends brought hostess gifts every time they visited, and instead of flowers, they brought chocolate or pastries. Even a nice bottle of sparkling juice would have been better than the pastries, which they brought by the kilo. Oh, but they were GOOD!!!!! And we had a LOT of visitors!

I didn't eat a lot of Egyptian food, except when we went out to Abu Sharra (sp?). Well, ok, I fell in love with foul, tamayya, howowshi (sp?). Yeah, ok...so that didn't help either. And there were tons of other fatty foods that I can't remember the name of. emoticon And, of course, my DH taught me how to cook rice the Egyptian way. Lots of fat there! And he ate bread with rice, bread with potatoes, rice with potatoes, bread with potatoes and rice...oh yeah...and bread with pasta. emoticon I couldn't eat something different, could I??? (Yes, I could have!)

Your MIL will never be offended if you concentrate on the soups and salads. Just take a taste of the other stuff, and say, "But Mother, I love your tabouli the best!" And, of course, it will be true.

My name is Ruth I'm from Ohio but I'm visiting for the 2nd time in Alexandria until Sept. I've been here since March. I'm married to an Egyptian and we have 2 daughters. This visit is putting me through a huge test by being away from home and family. I did go through a binge eating the first month but I'm now eating much better than before and my appetite has completed change. Although I do love my chocolate, now I don't crave as much and I'm aware of what I eat when I get really homesick. Sometimes I find it hard to substitute for my MIL cooking (she's a great cook masha'Allah). When I do eat the fatty foods I limit my intake of it and eat more salads or soups. I'm looking forward to reading more of the posts here. Nice to meet you all.

No, Dont' worry about your metabolic rate, being thirty means is that you're still at your top metabolic activity, also never mind being 110....
what I want to tell you is that losing weight takes time, not because it's difficult, on contrary, it becomes much easier with time, it takes time because you need to establish weight loss as habits, habits take time to get used to, also there are too many hazards for rapid weight loss.

So what you need is to make a weight loss plan, a reasonable one.. a weight loss plan that says you need to lose no more than 1 kg per week, then take in baby steps, this month 4 kgs, next month another four and so on.........
and yes this is a very supporting team, except when they see FOOD.

But my main problem is in the trunk area, buttocks, hips and stomach.
However, in these picture I was about 100.

People who doesn't live in Egypt , we're talking KILOGRAMS here, don't panic.
30 years is kind'a late from the point of you of the metabolic rate of my body, not in general.

Anyway, is this an active team OR WHAT ?

Welcome to the team and hope u will enjoy it here.

Well, I've been there, and now almost back there!!! I gaines a lot of wight after two pregnancies until i was 84 KG. I lost 64 kg after joining SP; it felt great. Now I gained 7 kgs back and struggling not to gain anymore!!! I'm trying to get on the track now.

My main tip is patience and consistency. Taking baby steps is really a key "the slower, the better". Also we have to be sure -mentally- that it can't be a temp diet, but it has to be a life-style change... we always need to acquire healthier habits, one at a time.

My advice to you is to educate yourself about healthy habits and whit's right or wrong about diets. There are a lot of useful resources here on SP.

Anyway, we will sure talk again later. Best of luck reaching ur goal and please let me know if u needed anything.

Hello Every body

I'm Fairouz from Tenth of Ramadan City in Egypt. I'll be 28 years old next July. I'm married & have a 2 years old daughter.

Becuase of pregnancy & such things you know about I gained a lot of weight. my current weight is 81 Kg My height is 166 cm.

My goal of weight to be 64 Kg. when I joined this website I was so excited but after three days I lost the excitment & I returned again.

I really need help & wants to get stick to my goal & lose weight soon.

So do you have any suggestions or supportive ideas?

Hi Everyone , I'm Hadir, 27 from Alexandria but now working and living in Cairo, ive been struggling with weight for a very long time, i used to practice rowing but ever since ive stopped i gained aloooooooooot of weight, i managed to lose some weight when i was back home in Alex. but ever since i relocated in cairo i have totally lost it, i gained almost 25 kg in 7 months much emoticon , I'm looking for new buddies so we may help each other during this journey

Hey everybody,
This is so cool- I am just finding out that there are quite a few Egyptians on SP. I have been on SP for about 6 weeks, and this is my first post. I am an American born Egyptian. Lived in Egypt (Alex) about 12 years where I then got married and came back to the States (Michigan) 5 years ago.
I have always had a huge appetite, and a very bad sweet tooth. I never really gained weight though. I guess my metabolism was at its peak before I got married. Of course, lucky me, gained so much weight with each of my two pregnancies. I am really working hard on getting my weight down- because being from a family with alot of medical problems, being overweight will only increase any hereditary risks I already have.
This site is awesome. I heard about it on TV, and thought I'd check it out (like I checked out many other diet sites). Now I am hooked on SP- which is good, because I get all the motivation I need to hopefully reach my gaols.
Thanks to everyone who participates to the message baords with anykind of input, be it recipies, motivational messages or just introducing yourselves- It's a good feeling to know youre not the only on out there "struggling" with your weight! :)

I have a couple of good tips for learning specifically spoken colloquial EGYPTIAN Arabic:

"Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic 2.0"

And while I have her earlier work ("Spoken Egyptian Arabic" - great for vocabulary & pronunciation but I HATE the ugly & in my mind bewildering transliteration that comes in the book) I believe Samia Mehrez's new one "Kallimni Arabi" looks very good - I'll probably purchase it myself.

If you don't already know the alphabet I highly encourage you to do that first & then only learn to say the words from the Arabic writing (if you're reading while learning, which you don't HAVE to do). I truly find it easier to read the words from the Arabic & end up with a better pronunciation because in my mind THOSE letters represent the Egyptian SOUND for what are similar but not exactly the same sounds in English.

I warn you now: learning requires as much discipline as an exercise program - maybe that's why I'm still not fluent!

Hello, my name Rukiya but people call me kiki. I'm from Somalia, but have been living in Michigan for the past 11 years or so and I'm engaged to a wonderful Egyptian man, I really want to learn arabic and meet other Egyptians so I can get to know the culture better. I was in Egypt in November 2007 for the first time I loved it, can't wait to go back.

I have been on spark few weeks now, its helping but I need all the motivation I can get. I have gained alot of weight while hospitalized and on steroids for 6 months. I'm slowly learning to adjust my habits and turn it into a good lifestyle change that is sensible and doable. I hate counting calories but I'm working on it its soooo hard for me, and trying to fit exercise into my daily schedule. Great motivation for my wedding.

Ok I think that's enough about me lol, I'm looking forward to get to know you all, support and motivate.

Well, 9 years Angie, huh? YES, it is changed a lot. I live in Alex, and it's so different now than 9 years ago, I think it's changed to the better as a city.

I like your new strategy a lot, this is exactly my strategy actually. This method provides a far steadier weight loss than other methods. I think it may be good to break your final goal into smaller mini goals; this will make you more focussed, will make your next goal sound easier, and will give a good push achieving one mini goal after another. I've reached 2 mini goals so far and my next one is to be 69Kgs.

Let me first intoduce myself...I'm Reem 27 yrs, Kindergarten teacher, from cairo, single AND OVERWEIGHT!

I've been struggling with weight loss since I was 22, when I first reached 75kgs, Which never happened to me before that...It was always nothing more than 5 kilos. Since I hit 75kgs, and uptill now, for full 5 years I've been flactuating between 57 kgs and 75 kgs...which is so exhausting for me and for my body emoticon

This time being 73kg again, after the summer and Ramadan feasts...and because I feel so frustrated with how I look...I decided to try a totally diffrent weight loss method-consider that I'm a big fat FAD dieter- the right method. The healthy way of losing weight, and my strategy is: taking it slow, real slow, quitting bad eating habbits-which I know will be tough, and adding excercise to my daily routine emoticon

I need all your support guys, and from now on-I know I've been a quiet subscriber- you will find me always on the message boards, and always there for you too emoticon

emoticon to the team Nancy... I'm glad you found us too. I hope you will enjoy it here, SP is life changing and this team is a supportive inspiring group of very nice ladies (having them all ladies is not intentional ;) ).

I think we have a lot in common; I'm a software engineer too, and I'm a project manager now too! I also have been struggling with my weight since I was a teenager. I understand how relocation can be hard, I suffered it between cities (Alex-Cairo and back), so I can imagine how hard it is between continents!! Anyway, I hope you get adapted very soon esA.

My advice to you is to educate yourself a lot about diet strategies on SP, how our bodies work, what healthy food and habits are and how to improve your fitness. You'll find a lot of education resources here on SP and they are all so useful.

Hi All,
My name is Nancy, I am originally from Egypt, and I relocated to USA last December 2006 with my husband and son(5 years old). I learned about sparkpeople when I came here from one of my friends, but I did not know that there is an Egyptian Group here till I saw SweetOrange Featured page.

So I searched for the Team and I am glad I found it, I would love to have friends from back Home specially to support with the weight loss.

as for my struggle with weight, due to relocation and the fact that I was not working when we came, I gained in the first 2 months around 30 Pounds extra (2akl wey noum :) ) and since then I am struggling to lose them. I did very good in my first 15 Pounds from 185-170 , next goal is to go from 170-155 and this is the one I found impossible as I lost somehow my motivation, I went as far as 164 and back to 167 and so forth for the last 3 or so months :). Relocation is causing me a lot of emotional disturbance and I am an emotional eater.
I am hoping that I can gain my motivation back again and be able to lose the excess weight and keep it off :)

I suffered a very bad backache before too, actually a slip-disc case, and also walking got me out of it and it's rare now as well... thank God. Walking is magic, right?

Well, I and other ladies here are trying to build up some exercise consistency too. We are staring by 15-20 mins a day. We post our daily workout to a topic "What was your workout today?", why don't you join us?

Anyway, I want you to know that we are here to support you and I would be happy to provide any help you need.

Hi. My name is Sakinah and I live in Rehab city. I have four children. Its been hard keeping the weight off after pregnancies. When I first came to Egypt I had very bad knee pain. I lost about 30 pounds in one year because I started walking. Something I rarely did back in the US. And now my knee pain is very rare. I joined SparkPeople so I can make better food choices and find some support from other members. I also need a fitness routine to keep myself moving. I want to loose 50 pounds by March 2008. I feel that it is time. Hope to speak to all of you soon, Sakinah
ps. Where in Egypt can I find a wieght scale but not too expensive.
