I went to the Black Hills a while back, saw Mt Rushmore, the Mammoth site all during the Sturgis rally (we were not participating in the rally, just go caught up in the sea of motorcycles all around!). Nice area! Welcome to the team, Dakotahkat!

Thanks, Linda! The Appalachian Trail is on my list, too - in segments. I took my girls to the Smokies on spring break a few years ago and one of the trails we did on the Tennessee side, Charlies Bunion, is part of the AT. It was mid-March and we met two thru-hikers who had started in Georgia. It was interesting talking to them. We also got to see one of the shelters along the trail. Definitely not the Hilton.... emoticon

Enjoy your adventures!

Hi and welcome to the team. I've never been to the Black Hills but heard a lot about the area and hope someday to make it there. I live on the edge of a national forest in southern New Mexico, and like you I can literally be on a hiking trail within 15 minutes of my house. It is so awesome to be so close to hiking trails!! I hope you get to make it to the Grand Canyon to do that hike. One of my dreams is to be able to hike at least portions of the Appalachian Trail an I've read a lot about it. The Continental DIvide trail, that runs from Canada to Mexico, runs right though my area and I've done a lot of day hikes on areas around here. Enjoy all your hikes!

Greetings from South Dakota!

I started hiking about 10 years ago. I'd much rather be outside than in a stinky old gym! I'm originally from the St. Louis area. While living there we made several trips to the Smokies, which will always be my favorite mountains. There are lots of places out west that we want to visit, but the distance and lack of vacation time was holding us back.

I stumbled across a job opportunity in western South Dakota about a year ago. I took a giant leap of faith (for me) and relocated. I love living in the Black Hills! It's beautiful here, there's a better quality of life and I can literally be out of town and on a hiking trail in 15 minutes. Sometimes we hike at lunchtime on casual Fridays. The humidity is much lower here than in the midwest, so I spent a lot more of my first summer outside because it was so comfortable. Plus, I'm now a days drive from Yellowstone and the Rockies, so I'm looking forward to exploring westward.

I've also gotten into snowshoeing, which I love. I'd like to try cross-country skiing next year.

One of the trips high on my list is to hike to Phantom Ranch in Grand Canyon and spend a few days down there exploring. Hope to make that happen next year.

Happy Spring!

Hi-

I hike for work and I hike for play. Right now I'm feeling a little antsy because the snow level is 5000 feet and I live at 4400, so there aren't a lot of trails open. I've been hiking cross country behind my house every day this week, on a faint two-track that loops around the foothills for about 3 miles. I was grinning about it today because I realized that on my unmarked, unmapped, "boring" hike, I have probably seen more wildlife this week (porcupine, antelope, white-tail deer, mule deer, elk, golden eagle, sharp-shinned hawk, Canada geese, and mallards) than I ever do on any of the popular trails!

Welcome. I am an avid hike and just got back from an overnight backpacking experience. Here is a trip report.
My hiking buddy and I are planning a trip in May that will be 34 miles over 3 days along a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Keep at it www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/216

Hi and welcome to SP and to the hiking team! Your goals sound awesome. I haven't done an overnight hike yet but keep thinking of doing one. I do a lot of day hikes. I live in southern New Mexico on the edge of a national forest with great places to hike and that's my number one fitness activity. Enjoy SP and the site!

I'm new to SparkPeople as of today and was excited to see a hiking page. I live in SW Washington and my goal is to take on some more challenging hikes (and an overnighter) this summer. Looking forward to reading your posts!
