Wow Karen, the park and sitting around talking and stuff sounds like a bunchafun...

We usually ride by ourselves, one of our friends had to have a liver transplant for
starters, we rode with him and his pals for a few trips, but he is on a lot of meds for
transplants and stuff and he wanted a camper, so his wife who is a savvy trader, said
sell the bike and we can get the camper.....so they did and they can tow without being
so hard on his health. Was Vietnam by the way, Agent Orange, not alcohol that got
his health......
Actually that is what caused my husbands issues as well...You hear a lot of stories, but
you could not ask for a gentler and more loving husband, father, etc. He is a gem.

Ride safe...if I hear on the grapevine how the lady does, I'll post it....

Good morning.

Sounds like that woman was very lucky... crossing my fingers she will be well. Its hard to hear when someone goes down. It reminds us how easy that could happen.

I am sorry to hear about you and your husband - but health is first. I feel for you - I know myself when I hear the bikes out in my area, I just feel like I have to go too LOL... especially at this point in the year - once we have been out its different - but first rides in the spring.. can't wait - its usually been a long winter.

The group I ride with is Canadian Motor Cycle Cruisers (CMC) we are across Canada - in my chapter there are approximately 50 active members - so on a 'perfect' day - weather, etc. we could have up to 43 riders out - that is a large group - but we are as safety conscious as we can be - we do not run stoplights or block; we just go for a ride - most of the time when we stop we do so at a public park - people bring their lunches - so its a great day - lots of mingling but we all share the same passion.

Its from the CMC that I met the group that we ride south with each year - there are approximately 10 of us that go each July. We will also head over to PA for a long weekend - the roads are so much nicer that way.

Welcome to the group StarryK15.....

Riding is riding. we rode as much as we could, but have had some health issues
with hubs, so keeping it to the cages right now.

We had someone near us riding in one of our parks this past weekend and somehow
she hit a guardrail and it flipped her over the rail and down a cliff....she did survive but
only probably because someone saw her and called for help. She was airflighted but
survived.

Sounds like you do a lot. Roughly how many are in your group?

I think I am that 'weekend warrior" - lol - we only ride from Spring til Fall - so this past weekend was gorgeous was about 15c (so what's that - 62f) - didn't matter- was nice to get out. I was thankful for my heated grips though.

I ride with a group through the warm months - sundays and Wednesdays; then my husband and I generally take a couple of road trips each year - this year we are heading to Nashville for the first week in July; then we are home 2 weeks and heading to BC (via USA) for three weeks - going to be an amazing summer!!!

In our riding group, I am a senior road captain - so I plan routes - lead them and/or tail gun them - on a sunday we leave at 9 am and return home around 5 - its a long day but weather dependent - its a great day!! Wednesdays, we ride for ice cream - usually about 3 hours.

Hi! I'm Amber and can't believe I haven't found this group before. I've been riding my '08 HD Sporty or my '05 Super Glide for five years now and would love to be able to do so every day, but in Iowa Mother Nature likes to play with us.

That's me, forever curious. There are a lot of ladies who ride from down at
Birmingham, but he was not real keen on me going that far to ride .. mainly
a safety issue....lots of bike wrecks in their area.

I loved my bike, but I reckon her new daddy loves her more...lol....I loved the
speed(bad me) but I will be getting a new one soon...

Greetings all,
Born & raised in Pittsburgh, PA, I've been riding for 28 years, I currently have five bikes. My primary ride is my 1994 BMW RSL1100. I started out back then on a 1976 Honda 550 Four after passing the MSF Rider Course and never looked back. I like sport-touring, or high-speed camping as I call it. I've gained too much weight in the past ten years, and I can't afford a new Aerostitch suit, so I better lose the weight! Planning on going to Daytona Bike Week again this year. If you've never been, it's a really great time, lots to see and do, lots of great people. I've just returned to SP after being away too long. Glad to have found this group!

Hi I'm Diane from Massachusetts.. and just started riding this october.

I took the motorcycle course passed and begun riding. Of course only got a few weeks of practice before the snow came. I have been faithfully driving around the neighbor hood to be more comfortable. My last ride out I did do it out in the real world and it was the most fantastic experience.

I just love it.. but still feel like I am working on my skills. Just because they gave my my license still doesn't make me a rider. I need to put more mileage in, and every time I go out I feel better and better.

I was excited to see this spark team page and I plan on spending some time here reading. I will learn from you all about your experience on the road and the common issues dealing with riding.

I also look forward to continuing my journey of losing weight. Which will make my day to day life better… and my future riding more fun.. time to get healthy! emoticon

Just do it , keep it in your mind this isn't going to be perfection but a goal to live a clean heatlhy life. As long as you can hit the mark most days you will be successfulI in the long run.

I saw on FB where one of the lady riders let her fear overcome her in a curve and went
off the road into a field and barbwire fence....the farmer and several people (men) came
to help get the bike back up on the road and she tightened her mirror brackets and went
on with her ride(the other several ladies came back to see why she was AWOL)

Another friend rode from Texas to Yellowstone Park and worked 2 summers there and this
summer she took off and rode thru the states to Canada for a science symposium, then
down to Niagara Falls and thru the states across to here in Alabama, we met for dinner,
then she rode on thru Mississippi, Louisiana, and back to Texas...almost 4,000 miles by
herself.....

Maybe things will settle down here now for a while and we can get some riding in..the only
thing we do is obviously pray before we leave on a ride, but I ride my bike like every other
person in the world is OUT TO GET US....so ride defensively....and keep posting....

love reading your posts...verrrrrrrrrry interesting.....

Darlene - Thanks a bunch for the website, I'll have to check them out and I'd love to see that video! Congrats on your 10 dismount.. LOL!! I'm amazed at how many people just don't SEE us on bikes. I'm over 300 pounds, ride a good-sized bike, AND wear a black jacket with reflective stars on the back and front, with a white helmet. You didn't see me?!? You've got to be kidding! It almost makes me nervous for when I've lost more weight. I've almost convinced my husband that this is why I NEED the White Hot Pearl Heritage Softail Classic... almost. We've had close calls every time we go out, being cut off, pulled out in front of, almost tail-ended at red lights. I hate driving in town, because til we get where we are going, I'm exhausted from being hypervigilant, because I know people are just not paying attention, although I do love the 65+ mile ride to town and then 65+ miles back home. Lots of sweeping curves and hills up and down. We try to get at least one or two round trips in the week he's home from work. Can't this time home, it's been raining hard the past few days and more to come according to the forecast. Pretty soon our Alaskan riding season will be over and then comes the long winter and working inside to get rid of this weight! Ride Safe!

JANET,

www.gusset.com (you may have to paste/copy this addy...it is Diamond Gusset Jeans and
they are all made in the USA)

I know they have a mfg./store in Lynchburg, Tennessee and that is the one we are going over
to. They have a video somewhere....where the guy is sitting down and a pickup truck drags him down the road at 35-40 mph and the denim is eaten away by the friction but the Kevlar
did not wear thru, which would protect from road burn....

I am also curious as to whether these jeans will keep my oil pan from burning my leg in
slow traffic....so I want to try a pair on to see if they will come down far enough with the Kevlar
to protect my leg....in the meantime, I am making a pad with a towel and liner to protect me from the oil pan.

David had a wreck on his Dyna because some dum-dum pulled out in front of him and did
over 3000 in damage....I had a minor one on the Softail when a guy ran a stop sign, we were
riding out in the backwoods. The good thing about this, was when she went over, I let go and
rolled and came up on my feet, the damage to the bike was a broken mirror fixture, skint pipes
and a skinned spot on the foot rest. David gave me a 10 rating for my dismount...LOL

We always pray before we take off on the bikes and had I been 8 to 10 feet further on the
road, both of us would have went off the edge of the bluffs....like 900 feet down....and may I
say BIG ROCKS......nothing to grab ahold of, so would have been very different outcome.

The guy who caused it, did stop and help us lift the bike back up on the road, then we made
a beeline for home to get the mirror fixed....had new Rousch pipes put on her since then, so
no remainder of the marks are there. This bike is 726 pounds full of fuel....so it is a load to
pick up if it goes down.

Ride safe.

Darlene - I see the pic of your bike and it's gorgeous! Congrats on the weight loss so far and here's to your continued success! Are there any local tailor shops around that could take them in for you?

We also don't ride without full leathers and helmets. I've seen the statistics of riders over 50 and they aren't good. I figure the safer we ride and the more protected we are just in case, the better off we are. I've been in one pretty serious crash and one no so serious as a passenger (both with my first ex-husband). In the first one, the back tire went sideways and we rolled, thank goodness for helmets and thick jacketsI I had a extra-thick down jacket on and it ripped the back off and my left elbow down to skin. There were feathers all over the place! The cop that came asked if we hit a chicken truck!! LOL!! The second one was not so serious, he just forgot to put his feet down at the stoplight. Til he remembered it was way too late, gravity did it's thing and we rolled off onto the road. There was a car full of college kids behind us and they were hooting so loud, made me laugh too, but he was not so amused. Didn't hurt the bike, just his ego... LOL. I've dumped mine in the driveway once too, pulled in on the wrong side and got into the soft gravel, was going slow enough that I just rolled out of the way of the hot pipes and let the peg hold the bike up. It's a lot harder to pick up a 500 pound bike on gravel than on pavement! The hold on to the solid parts and back up with baby steps doesn't apply very well. My husband was there to help me and together we managed to get her up where she belonged.

I love everything about the Heritage Softail and the Softail Deluxe, love the old school look with the sweeping fenders and chrome detauk, the comfortable seats, and that sound *grin*. You know exactly what I mean!

I've never heard of riding jeans with Kevlar lining, genious!! Who's the manufacturer?

Before you can commit to the future, you must come to terms with the past.

Hey Janet,

My husband was amazed when I told him I always wanted a Harley...he used to ride
when he was in the military and didn't have a car...lol
So we bought two, a Dyna and 883 Sportster, and then traded up to him a Heritage
Softail in Electric Blue, and mine, a Softail Deluxe in Vivid Black over Cherry Red..

My dream bike....I got some leathers from a friend who sold her bike, now I have lost
78 pounds with 40 to go and my chaps are way to big....I am now looking for someone who
can to take them up....also we plan on taking a road trip to the mfg. who makes the riding
jeans with Kevlar lining....they may provide as much protection as the leathers....keeping
the coat, regardless.

Ours live in the garage when we aren't riding...or as I fondly call it, the Harley Hut...

Yay!! Two of my favorite things combined... SparkPeople and motorcycles!! My name is Janet and I live in Nenana, a small village in Interior Alaska, about 60 or so miles south of Fairbanks. I'm just getting back into the SparkPeople thing after being away for a couple years. I had lost almost 80 pounds before, but things happened and I gained it all back and it brought friends. It's time to evict everyone!! I used to ride a long time ago as a passenger because I "wasn't allowed" to ride my own... Well, two divorces and another marriage later (hey, some of us take more than once to find the right one!), I convinced my husband to buy a motorcycle after listening to him wish for one for years. The deal was, if he bought one, I would too and learn to ride, because there was no way in hades I was riding on the back of his! So last year, he bought a 2005 Honda Shadow Aero 750 Silver over Pearl, and rode it for a couple months. I fell in love with that bike and he wouldn't give it to me, so I found one exactly like it, but a different color, Black over Dark Cherry, less miles, and less price (giggle) and bought it! This past January while were we in the city (Anchorage) we popped into the Harley Outpost just to look around. He sat on a few of the bikes in the showroom and then he saw Her... a 2012 Heritage Softail Classic in Vivid Black with all the chrome details and leather side bags and stunning white-wall tires. He sat on her and picked his feet up and there he sat, perfectly balanced. That was it, he was in love. Of course he hemmed and hawed about buying her, but I didn't have to push too hard! He traded his Honda in on her and we drove down with the truck in March and hauled her home where she languished in the garage across the street until May 6th and he and a neighbor chipped ice for 6 hours to make a path out to the main road, so we could get the bikes out. It was 36 degrees!! We didn't care!! I love riding my Honda Shadow, but there's a White Hot Pearl Heritage Softail Classic in the showroom that's calling me... perhaps soon!

Before you can commit to the future, you must come to terms with the past.

The only constant you will have in your life is your relationship with yourself.

Brightest Blessings
WytchHazyl

Hi Sandy and welcome to the group. Check out pictures on my page of photos of my
red and black Softail....love her.....

Its all about getting healthier....I feel better on my bike, that is for sure....now I am going
to have to buy new chaps cause mine are falling off,,,,,unless I can find someone who can
alter them for me...

If you ride a dirt bike you could ride a street bike....but riding your own on the highway is
not for everyone....just make sure you are comfortable with it ...........

Comment anytime, we welcome more chatters....and come over and join the Harley team...

Hi everyone, my name is Sandy and I'm from Southern California. My husband and I got a Harley Fatboy this past Christmas and I love riding as the passenger on the bike. The Harley is chromed-out and a really pretty metal flake red and black and is super sexy. I feel really awkward on the bike though since I don't feel sexy on it. lol

I want to lose weight to better my health for sure, but I also want to be less weight so my husband doesn't have to work as hard with me as a heavy passenger and I want to look good on the bike too.
emoticon

I also want to add that I ride dirtbikes, but I haven't ridden my own street bike. Although who knows, maybe I will one day.

I look forward to getting to meet all of you. Have a happy hump day, Sandy

Hey, I'm Deb,from Virginia, I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan 900. I've been riding for about 3 years and have put down about 13,000 miles so far. I'm co-leader of "Insanity for the Ladies", I'm on the 3rd round of Insanity and I have to say it really has helped the strength in my legs - good for backing the bike up ! Looking forward to participating on the team !

Thanks for the comment Winnie.......he had a stabbing pain in the knee today
and fortunately caught it before he went down....we were in Academy shopping
for a couple new shirts .... he said it felt like someone stuck an icepick thru it.

He had part of his meniscus removed, after injuring himself trying to push his mother
up a too-steep ramp and she objected to putting the foot rests up on the chair...don't
know why it would have hurt her, but oh well..............

He is holding firm that he does not want to give up the bikes, so we shall see what
happens.

Darlene,

Thanks for the welcome. As nurse I have taken care of many people after knee surgery. I am not sure what procedure your husband had done but give it time. Knee surgery can take a while (few months) to fully heal from but most people if they stick with their exercises are able to be more active than they were prior to the surgery. Regardless of if you get back on and ride or move on to something else, I hope you have an outlet to enjoy yourself and have quality time with your husband.

Hi Lindsay and welcome back to spark.

Welcome to another fellow rider....like I said, we don't care what kind of bike, just
that we always stick together and ride the wind.....

I am behind on my rides because husband had knee surgery in June, so we shall
see what happens....I told him if we aren't going to ride any more than we are, then
we need to sell them and move on to something else....like a camper and travel....

Hi Everyone,

My name is Lindsey I am not new to SparkPeople but have been away for a while and need to get back at it. I am nurse I work 12 hour nights and a first time mom just having a baby in May. I have been riding for a few years now, although I live in northern NH were the riding season is too short... I ride a 2007 Honda Shadow Aero; my dream bike is a Harley Fatboy that I hope to have someday when I have money for it. I haven't gotten any riding in this season due to having the baby but my maternity leave is up as of today and I will at least get some riding in on my way to and from work. I am excited to have found a team of fellow female riders to have for support here and enjoy the road with.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Darlene. Yes, I like to stay both busy and active. I'd be at Muskegon Bike Week today if it weren't for a problem w/my starter. Oh well. And to Chey697 - Never made it to Laconia, but have fond memories of Americade which takes place the week before Laconia and is in upstate NY in the Adirondak Mtns. My boyfriend at the time was a flat tracker and wanted to race Laconia, but we never made it.

My goal is sturgus.Met Hubby when I was 15. Rode Triumphs for a few years till we could aford Harleys. Funny how life goes bye so fast. Newbie here. Hoping that I am posting this correctly. I'm a passenger chick and dedicating myself back to a better me. Just made reservations for Bike Week in Daytona last night and gotta get on the ball at making my butt look a lot less like one. :) Thinking that joining this team will be a big boost and I need to stick to making myself healthier for now and all my days to come. Thanks for the team! All my best to all of you, from me and the foothills of NE Georgia!

Hi, I'm Mel from Cincinnati, OH. I just found this team and so glad I did. I've been riding my own bike since 2002. Last summer I bought an 09 CanAm Spyder RS. I've had lots of two wheelers, my favorite being my Ninja, but never felt comfortable enough to ride with the big boys. My husband rides a Harley Street Glide, but also got himself a Spyder after riding mine. We have helped to start a riding club and have taken several trips and met alot of great people.
