Stopping by to let you know the proper way to test thyroid. Take medication, eat breakfast and have lab test. Thyroid measures metabolism. Metabolism is energy expanded to digest food, etc. So if we take fasting test, there is nothing being measured.

My endo always gives me one slip for fasting and thyroid tests to be done together. I usually return to her office ( bc I forget to do this when there) to request separate slip for thyroid test. It may be inconvenient to go to lab twice, but I want accurate thyroid results. Last month I did not get separate slip for thyroid test bc I did not want to hassle with doc's office staff. This was the first in years, I had thyroid test done while fasting. Tests indicated I was extremely hypo....almost no med in my body, which made sense since I had not taken medication in 24 hours and med I take has short life...only active for a few hours after taking. It never dawned to mention above to endo. She increased my medication. Now I am hyper, can't sleep, etc. So I stopped taking second pill. Each time I take med and eat b4 thyroid tests, my levels are normal. Lesson learned.

Great that you drink water all day. I need break in between drinking water and drink 1-2 glasses of diet ice tea during day and cup of herbal tea b4 bedtime. Taking meds in morning and eating breakfast sets our metabolism for the day. Thyroid = metabolism = energy.

I have been where you are....three kids under 5 yrs of age....worked 75 hours weekly, night classes and homework...... I put myself last when it came to a lot of things except taking meds and breakfast daily, since these were must if wanted to be around for my family and able to do the other things.

Also, many people don't realize you need to take your meds with at least 8 ounces of water on an empty stomach to get it past the stomach to the jejunem where it will be absorbed.

Thanks for the response! I love your suggestions! I drink only water, off and on during the night. I have water next to my bed at night. My problem with my meds is that I don't take it in the morning all the time. I will work on that. With me being a full time student, I have a hard time going to bed regularly. I have 3 kids, so I am usually doing homework at night, especially since it is summer time. Again, thanks for the response and welcome!

emoticon and emoticon to the group. I have been taking thyroid medication for over 40 years. I don't know what type of medication you take but follow the directions. I drink half glass of water upon waking, take medication with other half and wait 1/2 hour for medication to get into small intestine b4 eating breakfast. Proper diet, sleep, exercise, staying calm are also important for thyroid patients. Nutritionist recommended eating protein breakfast due to hormones present upon waking. This works best for me. She liked my breakfast which consists of egg white veggie omelet, 2 turkey sausages, pc of whole grain bread and banana. She said if you must have carbs ( cereal, etc.) eat for lunch. She recommended going to www. myplate.org and eating the way site recommends. A quarter plate of each....protein, complex carbs, veggies and fruit. She recommended protein with veggies and fruit for snack....( protein....nuts, string cheese, etc...veggies...carrots, celery, etc. and fruit....grapes, cherries, etc.) Any protein, veggie and fruit will do. I exercise at gym and need foods I can take with me. Proper sleep is the hardest for me. Either I am so tired, I sleep a lot or have insomnia. I made mistake of following hi protein/low carb diet before meeting with nutritionist. Then found out that carbs regulate thyroid/metabolism and started eating them again. Eat two Brazil nuts daily...They contain selenium which is necessary for thyroid medication to get into your cells where it can work properly.

There are a lot of great Spark recipes...depends on your likes/dislikes. I love salsa chicken and few others.

Glad you are taking up bike riding. I am sure you will get the hang of it quickly and buzz around town. I am looking for exercise buddy, but don't live in your area. Your planning will lead to success. Good luck.

Hey everyone! My name is Dyan, and I live in Columbia, Mo with my husband and three boys. I joined Spark People awhile ago, but just joined this community today. I have low thyroid, and currently taking medication to keep my thyroid levels under control so I can lose weight and eventually maintain a healthy weight. I am looking for any support or suggestions one might have in dealing with thyroid issues. Since I am taking medication, recipe suggestions would be great. If someone is looking for a walking/biking buddy in my area, that would be wonderful. I know that idea is probably far fetched, but it is worth a shot. I am getting use to my bike, so I am still slow and a little scared to ride it, but can't wait to get more confident on my riding skills. Thanks for reading this, and I am looking forward to getting to know the rest of the "Thyroid Community". Have a wonderful weekend!
