Hey Joni:-) same thing happens to me on the phone. I am 65, but most people don't believe me. Also, when they hear me on the phone, they always say, gee...thought you would sound different:-) Older? lol
I have never used the add link, but I believe it is to add what ever you like to your profile page. I am sure someone else here is more knowledable on this subject. I grinned at your mention your weight is stuck in Ks...perhaps you can contact Sparks, and they can help guild you to change this feature. Must be a glitch. Diana

What is even more interesting about how I look in my picture (which, by the way is about 2 years old) is how I come across on the phone. what is a senior person supposed to sound like anyway? If I am asking for advice over the telephone, about computer questions, usually, and I tell them not to talk so fast, I cannot write that fast, after all I am an old lady, and when I say that, they do not believe it! I guess I just always think young. LOL
Glad to have your input. emoticon By the way, a question I have always wanted to ask, what is that 'add a link' function for? Can I put my own web page address in that function? Or what is it for? I have never used it yet. thanks Joni

I am following Dr Esselstyn's book to Reverse Heart Disease.
My goal is to get one pound slimmer every week until I reach 140, and then stay there forever, healthy.

I notice that my weight always comes up as Kg but believe me, I never weighed 210 Kg LOL It should be reading pounds (that is what my scale says), and I cannot seem to change it so wanted you to know. LOL

Wow, I just discovered this thyroid Community tonight and it was a really long read. I have been working with the vegetarian/vegan group for over a year now, but never knew this other program was here. emoticon My story is somewhat different, at least than others I have real, and the numbers mean nothing to me because the readings in Canada are different than in the states. I have been diagnosed since a pre-teen and am getting close to 80 so I have had to live with this for a very long time and dealt with much weight gain, loss , gain over the years. I was also taking desiccated thyroid for years and then about 30 years ago my doctor thought the synthetic was more stable and changed me over and told me to come back in three months. Well, by three months most of my hair had fallen out my skin was all papery, my weight had escalated and I was tired and dull! She asked me why I had not come back sooner DUGGG! I just told her she said three months. I was not very coherent. back on the Park Davis. Over the years I have let the doctors do this to me twice more as we moved to a different province. the last time it was a specialist and he thought he had all the answers, but he didnt. the synthetic just not address my body, period so that is the last time I will ever go off the ground up cow thyroid. Sorry folks, even tho' I am now vegan, I must preserve my health. the thing that has helped me the most and given me so much energy is the Maxgxl and N-fuse. Now I have energy to burn and am pretty well going down about one pound a week. I am almost at my 40 lb loss and half way to my goal. I have lots of other problems so cannot do all the cardio and stuff that so many of you do but I do three days a week of deep water Aquasize and drink plenty of water. that gal who said she was trying to cut out the diet soda, Hurray emoticon because that is even worse than sugar soda. I can't tell you how many years it has been since I have had any soda. You might as well put your mouth over the exhaust pipe of your car!. We drink lots of alkaline water and some herbal teas, but mostly water. I have been vegan since last Dec and Veg for 4 years and most of my arthritis has disappeared, can knit and crotchet again and wring out rags LOL. this is getting longer than the whole list I just finished reading so I'd better quit.
I just live one day at a time and often repeat the serenity prayer and if anyone does not know what that is, just ask me. thanks for reading. Lots of good info here. emoticon Oh yes, one more thing, I put my pill on my night stand with my sipper cup of water and take it when I get up to pee, which is usually anywhere from 2-4 am. LOL

Well ..what a difference a day or so makes:-) I upped my exercise, doing a two mile run today..used some hills also. Since I started running a few weeks ago, my belly fat is shrinking. I did loose the two lbs I had regained, but want to loose more. I am using a MP2 now to gage my exercise, and also using the food journal on their site. I have set my goals and hopefully can achieve a lose of another two lbs in two weeks.
On another note..lost my job..and you know what..going to let it stay lost!! No more stress..no more hot kitchen..going to just collect for a bit..use the time to enjoy my first summer..even though it is only one month:-)

Hello Everyone. well I have been working full time again. At 65, it is not as easy, but doing OK. I am feeling upset also. I regained about three or four lbs. I am still exercising each day, even if only for 10 to 20 min..but job is moving all day cooking, prepping, and lifting for 8 hours.
Guess my thing is slowly going back to things I know I should avoid like gultin and sugar. I did some emotional eating, and bam..scale went up a knotch:-)
Not giving in, but am so frustrated with all of this. I am going to just follow the suggested menu of a bit..and see if it puts me back on track..but avoiding breads and sugar again.

I too keep losing the same old pound. I have asked this and not really gotten the answer I wanted but I feel since becoming hypothyroid it seems like I dont heal like I did. I know also I'm now older but it just seems like I need to blame it on some thing. I'm determined to lose the weight but really need to step things up a bit. Keep working at I see all a lot of others loosing so we will too.

I've been stuck too and I'm just glad that I haven't regained the pounds. I'm also recovering from knee surgery, so now I'm beginning to up my cardio again. Hoping that will jump start my weight loss.
Maybe if you change your program, you'll start to see the pounds melt off again.

Aroonie, I so much hear you! I've been stuck for what seems like forever too. It gets frustrating, and I confess that there have been times when I've asked myself, "Why try?" But, you know, when I stop to think where I would be without watching my diet and exercise, it's downright scary. I probably would have had my first heart attack or stroke by now. Don't give up Aroonie. There are constantly new ideas to try here, on spark. Eventually, and it may not happen overnight, we will crash through this wall. Hang in there.

I have been so frustrated of late because the weight just isn't coming off like it should. I may lose a couple of pounds but put those same pounds back on. The seesaw is getting tiresome. My thyroid levels according to the doctor are where they need to be. However, as a diabetic I have other issues to consider. I didn't know I should avoid certain foods. I've made a promise to myself that I will wean myself off of diet drinks and just drink water. Any advice at this point is appreciated. emoticon

The idea of putting the lemon in it, like you do, sounds like a good idea, because then you would be getting some vitamin "C" too. I have not tried the Roibos yet. What does it taste like? I'm wondering if it might taste like anything that I know of.

Yes, it does, Anna. It has antioxidants in it also, so that is an extra bonus. I just bought some with blueberry/pomegranate in it, but my favorite is the green tea with lemon grass or mint. I am growing my own lemon grass and mint in the garden. I haven't tried it iced, have you?

I had a TSH drawn, and it showed that I was over-medicated. However, I have had a raging appetite and actually gained some of my weight back during that time. I am an active person. We run an animal welfare approved farm, raise horses, make hay, and garden our own veggies. These things take a lot of my time, but I am still planning a way of fitting more exercise in. I will be 50 this winter, so running all this is pretty challenging. There is still a lot I want to do and try.

I have been on thyroid meds for almost 6 weeks now...done lots of reading about hypothyroidism...and I think I have somewhat of a philosophy going now...try to get to the gym four to five times a week...trying really hard to be more positive..rest when I am tired..stay away from soy, broccoli, cabbage, and peanuts...rehaulled my whole diet and try to have LOTS of complex carbs and very little refined ones...try to eat more in the morning/day than at night.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 18 months ago.
I was so tired, I slept without ever feeling refreshed, I lost a lot of muscle mass. I was always breathless when I would walk and I constantly had to fight with myself not to go and take a nap. I also became very depressed and I gained 40 pounds. I went from a size 8 to a size 14+ My doctor got my meds right after 6 months but I did not feel better for over a year. I did not loose weight and actually continued to gain. I started reading up on the synthroid and learned that it works best when taken with water only and not to eat for at least half an hour. I do this religiously so as not to ruin my bodies ability to absorb the synthroid.
My doctor did tests to find out why I was breathless
as there was no growths or lung issues..she suggested cardio. That was this January, I now have lost 30 of the 40 pounds I gained. But not without a fight, I wont let a thyroid problem get the better of me. I do cardio every day for an hour and I do weights every second day. I consistently loose 2 pounds a week on the spark diet, I am in the gym six days a week and I will do what needs to be done. I can gain it back in a second if I am not careful. I Only eat beef once a week, I have beans or chicken or turkey or portabella mushrooms burgers. I don't eat the soy as it can make it hard for your body to absorb the synthroid. I stay within 1200-1400 calories.I have been doing this for a long time now and it is becoming a habit..I never miss my gym time as this is what has saved my life ....I feel fantastic. There is no easy way out of this... diet alone will not work and either will exercise, they are partners to good health. I just decided that I want to make myself a priority . I do have cravings but I use snap peas as a treat when I want something to snack on. I so mess up occasionally but I don't do it too often. I hope this helps someone to realize that they can do it too. Once you start feeling good you want to keep moving.

No matter what age you are, you still have to metabolize every day. How else could you maintain basic life functions like body temperature, heart beat and circulation, consciousness, etc.? I do understand the tiredness that you feel, Anna. I have days where I spend so much time just fighting it off the best that I can. Sometimes I have good days, and I think I should focus on whatever I do that precedes them. I need to find a way to have more of an influence over the outcome.

I went to Women's health Clinic on Friday and asked for some advice among other things and the lady doctor bluntly said, " Honey, what hormones? At your age it is not the thyroid or hormones it is just energy in and energy out, simple as that".

Oh gosh now I am more depressed and will take time to study more to keep occupied so as not to dwell. I need my dosage changed from 100mcg. Anyway, I'm tired as well, so I will have some green tea and go to bed before I get the munchies.

I was able to maintain very well for many years on the same doseage of Synthroid. Then I hit 46 and my body went crazy on me. I think I finally have the proper doseage of synthroid now, but am struggling to lose the 10 lbs I gained in the process. It all went to my belly, which has never been a problem area for me and even though I lost slowly before I was able to lose. I do best when I am very regimented in my diet and excercise for at least an hour a day.

When the sluggish, tired feeling comes, I know that it is easy to get depressed. Just knowing this helps me to sand-bag against it, so I find something I really like and get into it. Right now I've got this rose garden going, which requires weeding, feeding, and mulching. I have to work at it, but it is rewarding to see and smell the flowers and know that I did it. Yesterday, I got my horse to willingly go through an obstacle course with me that we had trouble with all last week. Sometimes little successes like this can link together and form an alliance against depression. I would encourage anyone with thyroid issued to grasp on to something that inspires them and ride it through to the improved you.

Like Rissaspieces, I also have to work out harder and longer to see the scale budge. (Compared to before the condition.) I also have a great doctor who has my TSH levels tested every 6 months because of issues I've had in the past with fluctuating levels. I seem to be holding pretty steady (at more than a year now) at a 75 mcg dose of Synthroid. Take right when I wake up, and then am super-careful not to eat for an hour. Vitamins, calcium, etc. at bedtime. I am VERY slowly making a dent in the 60 lbs of extra thyroid weight plus unlost pregnancy weight, but only working out HARD 6 days a week -- diet alone doesn't cut it anymore. emoticon

My thyroid is very well managed with medication so mostly my philosophy is to remember to be gentle with myself when it does flair up. I have a tendency to get down when people won't listen or understand how bad it can be. I remind myself "yes, you have a thyroid problem, yes it is making your life hard right now...what can you do for yourself today?" That might be going to the doctor, it might be getting up and exercising, it could be letting myself take that extra nap, or just listening to a favorite song.

I'm old. Things are starting to go, and that's just the way it is. I'm not going down without a fight, because there are a lot of things I want to do yet. So, I accept what is, and change what I can, where I can. I have to be responsible for my health, because I don't want my kids to be burdened. I'm happy to do things now, while I still can. My philosophy is--Eat healthy, and live in the now. (Not just exist, but actively live life.) The rocking chair will still be waiting for later. I don't want to go there with regrets over what could have been done. I need to just have my adventures now and make some good memories.

Faith is believing in what you can't see.

What a great post, MZZ!

My philosophy is centered around autonomy, judicious use of western medicine, and education, education, education. Thyroid health is absolutely linked to the alphabet soup of chemicals we swim around in on a daily basis in our modern society, so I try to make sure my home environment, including living space, cleaning materials, cosmetics, foods and water, are as clean, pure, and close to nature as humanly possible. A childlike state of mind, liberal doses of exercise (listening to my body to determine intensity), dessert, and maintaining optimal daily hydration round out the basics for me.

This perspective is obviously quite generalized; I'm more of a big picture type. I think that the thyroid is only a little piece of the pie ; )

I managed to get my TSH down to 1.6 and other numbers are looking good, as well. I take one Nature-throid dose when I get up, sublingually, lying in bed until it melts, and get up to have a wonderful breakfast. I have the other Nature-Throid dose at about 3 PM. I exercise for 15 minutes on the eliptical, 15 minutes on the treadmill every day, started doing weights with a personal trainer every other day. The weight bearing exercise does more for me than anything else. I have been feeling GREAT since getting back into my exercise.

Oh, I make sure everything I put in my mouth benefits me in some way. No junk. I've discovered "Less is More" in the sense that I eat smaller meals throughout the day instead of three squares and have eliminated dairy, wheat, salt and animal protein from my diet but find that I am enjoying food more than I ever have, before. Everything tastes better. This amazes me.

For me, Armour by mouth twice daily (2 grains) at 9 am and 10 pm seems to work. I eat a lot of fiber, which may be part of the reason I need a high dose. :-) My doctor allows me to keep my TSH almost completely suppressed, as long as my other thyroid panel numbers look good and I am not having any hyperthyroid symptoms.

While it is not related to my thyroid management, because of my thyroid disease, I work out longer than most. I try to work out for at least one hour and usually two at a pop. I think it was a big part of why I was able to lose so much weight, despite my thyroid status. I do a combination of yoga, belly dance and the elliptical.

Reached my goal November 2009!

Weight Watchers worked for me and now I work for Weight Watchers.

I didn't realize how lucky I was that my thyroid condition (RAO 15 yrs ago) is relatively easy to manage. My personal thyroid management philosophy is to keep reading the postings on this team to continue to educate myself, and to check in here if my conditions worsen. Thank you Thyroid Team! You are an invaluable resource.

I find taking the medication is one thing the weight has been another, given my weight doubled trying to find a doctor to listen. It has been absolute uphill battle, even though today I am about 30 pounds lighter than the day it was diagnosed 7 years ago.

Mzzchief,
You are the eternal optimist.....and I wanted to thank you for this post. Gonna give this some serious thought before i put my personal philosophy - but just the thought of it makes us all more aware - more present - and ever so likely to deal better with the crazy episodes!
Thanks again - you really do rock!

I find my condition is relatively easy to manage by taking my medicine first thing in the morning, taking my viatmins half way through the day, exercising vigorously and regularly, and 9 times out of ten eating properly, but allowing myself the one "off" time to treat myself a little.
The one thing I find most important is to not define my health by this condition. It really has very little effect on my general health and attitude. No longer having a thyroid, I no longer have to worry about the nodules becoming cancerous or the enlarged softball in my throat, but the things I was so worried about never happened...so I manage things as they happen rather than worrying. It took a while to develop and discipline myself to a plan but I have been relatively concern free for three years!

Yep, peeps, its all about YOU!

Here's an opportunity to give others a piece of what works for you in a general sense... and what doesn't!

I think if we have a collective spot to pool our philosophies, it will serve as inspiration for new members, people who are still struggling with this disorder, are confused or in some cases depressed, angry and/or discouraged.

Make a commitment here by writing down your personal thyroid management philosophy... hey, just in case you need a reminder at a later date... or to chart how you philosophy has changed over the months/years.

Cheers!
