I wrote this on a dare. I told a friend I couldn't truly call myself an Irish poet until I wrote a pub song. He dared me to write it and sing it for him for St. Patrick's Day -- which I did! I hope you enjoy it. It may be history's first feminist pub song.
The Drunkard's Wife (Melody: Drunken Nights)
My man came home on Monday night, as drunk as he could be,
And as he came in through the door this he said to me:
I've gone and torn my favorite shirt; I've ripped the sleeve right through.
Be a dear and get your needle, love, and fix it up like new.
You left me here alone, I said, while you were on your spree;
Get your mending from your bottle, then, for you'll have none from me.
My man came home on Tuesday night, as drunk as he could be,
And as he came in through the door this he said to me:
I'm near to death from hunger, love, it's now the end of day.
So please fetch me my supper, dear, before I faint away
You left me here alone, I said, while you were on your spree;
Get your supper from your bottle, then, for you'll have none from me.
My man came home on Wednesday night, as drunk as he could be,
And as he came in through the door this he said to me:
I've quite run out of money, love, to buy the lads a round.
So please go fetch your purse for me and let me have a pound.
You left me here alone, I said, while you were on your spree;
Get your money from your bottle, then, for you'll have none from me.
My man came home on Thursday night, as drunk as he could be,
And as he came in through the door this he said to me:
I'm in the mood for love tonight, so come to bed, dear wife
And give the love that you have vowed you'd give me all your life.
You left me here alone, I said, "while you were on your spree;
Get your loving from your bottle, then, for you'll have none from me.
My man came home on Friday night, as drunk as he could be,
At least I think that's what he did; I was not there to see.
For I've run off to Donegal as fast as I could run
And at my side is my true love, our neighbor Rory Dunn.
When he left me alone each night to have his drunken spree,
I'll bet he never thought I'd find a better man than he.
