My complication was due to genetics. I have a tiny throat and they scarred it when they tried to put a tube down it during surgery. It caused me to have a hard time swallowing. 3 1/2 months later I had an endoscopy and a throat dilation to stretch out the throat. I was then able to swallow about as well as before surgery. I will always have problems swallowing.

My other complication was also due to genetics. I have always had digestive issues and it intensified after surgery and so I have problems with the nerves in my colon not pushing the waste through properly and now have to take very expensive medication to help that problem.

So my complications are not typical with the RNY surgery!
I am doing fine physically.

Ah, thank you! LOL - I didn't really know about that sparkpage thingy. I'll look into setting one up just as soon as I can.

Yes, I know what you mean by people trying to discourage you from your decision. Lucky for me, those few friends who did are friends whose personalities I know very well so I didn't take major offense.

I attend a support group and have heard about the various complications - one lady even died, unfortunately, but there were other things going on. I hope things are smoothing out for you despite the hitch you experienced.

I have some friends who know that I plan on doing this, and my kids know too, but they are the only family that will ever know.

Good news on my end: Today I did get the final requirement checked off. I surpassed the 10 pound weight loss requirement by two pounds! I now get to bring in my medical check off list to the surgeon's nurse who will then verify the completeness of the form before I can see the doc.

I have to have maintain this 10 pound loss for my appointment on May 17, and I feel confident that I can do it, though not strictly every single day.

I wanted to send you a sparkgoodie to welcome you but you have not set up your sparkpage or it is set to private. So Welcome to the Team! If you friend me you can check out my blog for people who are considering weight loss surgery. I have many of the resources I have used in my WLS journey. I am now 19 months out from surgery. I spent 2 years researching the surgery before I decided that I needed to have it done. I am thankful I spent the time to really research it so that I knew when I approached it and had people discouraging me that it was the right decision for me. I was confident in my choice due to my research and I do not regret it even though I had some complications from it.

60NLOVINIT, Contact www.wlsfa.org weigth loss surgery foundation of America and ask them who is doing the surgery on people over 60 in your area. I am sure Antonia Namnath will know of someone to refer you to. Toni is great about responding to emails quickly.

this is an entirely different world... sometimes you just can't talk about things in person... except for my long time boyfriend... i can't talk to anyone about my choice to have this surgery except with my doctor... but no friends for now...

as i posted in another surgery site... the hospital i chose first is a level2 facility... and i need to find a level1 which will do the surgery for over 60.... i am not giving up... just a bit of setback for me... and yes like you i am doing this for my weight and to get off my diabetic meds and insulin...

we all need to lean on each other...

Thank you so much for your kind wishes.

It makes me very mad that you have been discriminated against because you are over 60. People live to be over 100! You can do this! I hope you are able to find a doctor, and in the meantime, do the things you need to do to be as healthy as you can...and you are right about posting. I am a bit hesitant because 1) I'm so very busy, and 2) I don't like my online life to cross with my RL very much, if at all.

Thank you so much! I'm fairly lucky in that the scales in the medical facility seem to be in accord with my scale at home....still, I don't want to take any chances that I don't get that signature giving the "ok" on my form today! : )

i am at my early stages in my plans... i went to an information session last week.. but walked out half way through it... why?? cause the hospital i was dealing with did not do patients over60... so i see my doctor that reccommended it next week and we will start over again...

what i did do was keep the information they passed out... i came home and read it... then went online to get more info....a couple of chatters here have also been a great help...

i believe that if you post more... let yourself be known... you will get a lot of help and support... i know i have already....

good luck.... betsy

emoticon I know what you mean about the scales...mine are always about 4 lbs less than my surgeon's. I keep telling them to get theirs fixed or I am bringing my own to the appt. LOL. Hope you get your surgery date soon...it is exciting when everything starts moving along. Don't think you will regret this.

Ok, so I've been poking around this site for awhile and today I decided to make myself known. Why? Because this is a crucial day when I will really feel like I'm on the road to making a huge change in my life via gastric bypass.
Since Feb, I have been diligently jumping through every hoop and roadblock on a very extensive check off list and the last hurdle has been the requirement to lose 10 pounds. I was supposed to have met that goal last Tuesday, but was 3.5 pounds off. Today I get a second bite at the apple, so to speak, and I am happy to report that the scale records a ten pound loss. I really don't want to "cheat" but I feel that I need to visit the sauna before my appointment today just to ensure the scale THERE reads the same as my scale here. I absolutely need to have this final thing checked off today because everything else gets delayed until I do and with the scheduling outlook, I want to have my surgery before the summer ends and my daughter goes back to college.

I'm doing this surgery to not only lose weight, but first and more importantly, to no longer be diabetic or have sleep apnea. My weight today is 257 and my goal weight is 165.

emoticon
